Anyone who says that age is just a number has never paid attention to Disney movies. Now before you get all defensive, we’re not just going to list the ages of all the Disney princesses. We all know they’re young. That wouldn’t be all that interesting. Anyways, times have changed! For the most part, children are children and adults are adults in Disney movies. The specific ages don’t really matter all that much. That’s true, but sometimes a character’s age changes the way you view them. If you found out that Prince Eric was really 38 when he was crushing hard on Ariel, you might think he was a bit creepy. Well, we’re not just trying to shame Disney here. We’re trying to shed some light on some of the more amazing ages in Disney films, all Disney films, live action and animated.
We tend to ignore ages in Disney. They’re inconsequential. Almost all the princesses are young women between the ages of 16 and 21, so we aren’t going to be dwelling in that category. Most of the princes are in that realm as well, usually a couple of years older, so we’ll avoid that mostly too. Many of the characters on this list have their ages mentioned in their respective films. It’s not that we think we’ve uncovered some top-secret information, you might just have forgotten or never considered what that age means. We’ve just collected the most interesting of the ages in an effort to help fans gain a new appreciation for Disney characters, a respect your elders type of thing. Some of these even go the other way, like you never realized how young the character is or was supposed to be. So let’s learn something new today! Here are 15 Disney Character Ages That Will Change the Way You View The Films.
15. Maz Kanata – 1000-Years Old
In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, when Han Solo and company are entering her castle on the planet of Takodana, Solo says that Maz Kanata has “run this watering hole for a thousand years.” Now we sometimes take Star Wars’ quotes too literally, but there was one other character who was about that old, Yoda. In truth, Yoda would be about 930 during the events of The Force Awakens, approximately 70 years younger than Maz. When asked if these two seemingly similar characters had a previous relationship, director JJ Abrams said, “I do believe that Maz and Yoda at one point had crossed paths. But that is not something, of course, due to the events of past films, that happens in this one…” Many people have speculated that these two could be of the same species, possibly even related, but we’ll have to wait for future films to confirm that.
14. WALL-E – 700-Years Old
The events of the film, WALL-E, take place in the year 2810, a whopping 700 years after humans have left Earth and the WALL-E robots were programmed to start cleaning. In that 700 years, WALL-E developed sentience and curiosity. Since the time passes so quickly in film, we don’t ever take the time to appreciate how long WALL-E has been dedicated to his one task. He’s one of the oldest Disney characters, but his simple-mindedness makes him feel young to viewers. It is interesting that EVE is a relatively young robot, definitely too young for the old-timer WALL-E. You’ve got to wonder, if it took WALL-E hundreds of years to develop the smallest inkling of sentience and only a few days for EVE, doesn’t it seem like she is going to advance at a far greater rate than him? Do robots even have genders?
13. Snow White – 14-Years Old
Yeah, so we are talking about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. We never said we weren’t going to talk about the princesses at all. We just said we weren’t going to dwell on them. Anyways, how can we not discuss Snow White? She was the first, after all. That and she’s 14 years old. Fourteen! Why are these adult dwarfs letting a child boss them around, telling them when to go to bed? We also have to wonder about the work the dwarfs have her do. These are before the days of child labor laws, though, so maybe we shouldn’t be too critical. Still, all this talk about Snow White being the fairest of them all should make us uncomfortable in this day in age. Then you got an 18-year old prince kissing her while she sleeps. It sounds like the plot of a much different movie.
12. The Beast – 10-Years Old?
Here’s what we know about the Beast, also known as Adam, from Beauty and the Beast. We know he was cursed for being a jerk to a beggar who was really an enchantress. He now needs to make out with Belle before his 21st birthday to break the curse. We also know that the curse has been in place for 10 years. We know this because Lumiere sings, “ten years we’ve been rusting” in Be Our Guest. So, by simple math, we can figure out that the Beast was about 10 years old when he was cursed (just about to turn 11 maybe). But how does that work? The painting of him looks exactly like he does when the curse is broken. We can only go off what we know, so he must have been a mature looking 10-year old. No wonder if the prince was a jerk to that ugly woman. Kids are jerks.
11. Chip and Mrs. Potts – 6 and 65?
The case of Chip and Mrs. Potts’ ages are even more mysterious in Beauty and the Beast. So, once again, we know that the curse has been in place for 10 years. Let’s assume that these things never aged when they were turned into different household items. That would mean that Chip is about 6 when the curse is placed. Therefore, when the curse is lifted, this kid is a 16-year old walking around in a 6-year old’s body. He’s completing complex math problems while his momma’s still cutting the crusts off his sandwiches. That brings up another thing. Mrs. Potts is very obviously in her mid 60s. Angela Lasbury who voiced the character was about 65 at the time as well. The curse gave her an additional ten years with her son, when, in real time, she’d probably be dead by then. What’s she got to complain about it. And how did she give birth in that time period at her age? And who’s the father? Ack. Too many questions.
10. Kida – 8,500-9,000-Years Old
Of all the Disney princesses, Kida from Atlantis: The Lost Empire is the oldest and it’s not even close. Kida is said to be between 8,000 and 8,500 years old. The real question is, why is she this age? It seems to be a bit of an arbitrary number as Plato wrote that Atlantis sunk 9,000 years before his time. Since the film, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, took place in the early 1900s, Kida should be between 10,000 and 11,000 years old. Some scholars suggest that Plato got it wrong. If Atlantis did exist, it was likely part of Crete, an ancient naval power of their own. In 1,500 BCE part of the Crete sunk after a massive volcanic eruption. Plato could have just got the dates wrong. That would make Kida about 3,400 years old. Maybe Disney just split the difference.
9. Pocahontas – 12 and 21-Years Old
There’s nothing very spectacular about the age of the Disney version of Pocahontas. She’s supposed to be about 21 in Pocahontas, so this is all above board in our eyes. But this differs quite a lot from the historical Pocahontas, who died by the time she was 21. In the historical accounts, Pocahontas was about 10 when John Smith first landed. When she saved Smith’s life before he was executed, as she does in the film, Pocahontas was only 12-years old. Rather than become romantically linked, Smith saw himself as more of a father figure to Pocahontas. So, again, nothing wrong with her age in the film, but next time you watch it remember that the story was based on the actions of a child, not a woman.
8. Kylo Ren – 30-Years Old
When you see Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) pitted up against the very young Rey (Daisy Ridley), you would think they were roughly the same age. Ren might be a bit moodier and his temper tantrums might make him seem younger than the very mature and responsible Rey, but the average viewer would think they must be close in age at least. The truth is though, they aren’t. While Rey is only 19, having been born 11 years after the battle of Endor, Kylo Ren was born less than a year after the battle of Endor, which makes him between 29 and 30. That’s a lot of hissy fits for a 30-year old man. Grow up!
7. Peter Pan – 7 Days, 6 and 12
In the Disney film, Peter Pan, Peter is 12-years old. But that was changed from the original story and Disney’s original plan. In Pan’s very first literary appearance, he was only a seven-day-old baby in The Little White Bird, specifically in a chapter called Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. This idea was altered a bit for the stage play, “The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up.” In the later play, Pan’s age was never mentioned explicitly, though it was said that he had all his baby teeth. That would put him closer to 6-years old. There are many theories as to how old Pan might be in total, but we just can’t know for sure. It would make sense that Peter would be an adult, maybe 40-50 years old. We can assume this because of two things. One, Captain Hook and the pirates have all betrayed their youth, acting as a mirror for Peter and the Lost Boys should they ever abandon theirs. Then there is Wendy and her siblings’ parents, George and Mary. They are shown to have responsibility and be bothered by their children’s silliness. This is what Peter would be had he grown up. He offers the children options. Be like me or be like your parents. Add to that the old theater tradition of having the actor who play’s George Darling also play Captain Hook and you’ve got yourself a connection between them all.
6. Christopher Robin – 5-6-Years Old
Nowadays there are countless Winnie the Pooh movies, but the very first feature film was done by Disney and called The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The films were based on the short stories and poems written by A.A. Milne. In total, Milne wrote two collections of short stories and two collection of poems, each contained tales of Winnie the Pooh, Christopher Robbin and the animal gang from 100-acre woods. Like many animated characters, Christopher Robbin ages strangely, but he starts out as a five-year-old boy and turns six in Now We Are Six. That’s much younger than most people peg him as. That also means that a 6-year old little bugger is going out into the forest and having adventures with no parental guidance, nailing tails on the butts of donkeys and engaging in complicated projects like construction and agriculture. Since Milne never wrote anything more after this, we have to assume that Christopher never got any older than six.
5. Alice – 7-Years Old
While the Disney animators may have drawn her to look older, Alice from the Disney films still goes on much of the same adventures from the original story. In Lewis Carrol’s first story, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, we are never told Alice’s age. However, in the sequel, we are told that she is seven and a half, which would make her about seven in the original story. Put this into perspective. The Queen of Hearts is beset on killing Alice, a little girl of only seven. Even though she may look about 12 in the animated films and about 25 in the Tim Burton films, the original source material has her significantly younger. It turns the adventures into a modern nightmare. It’s amazing how age changes our perspective.
4. The Genie – One Million-Years Old
Much has been made about the Genie’s strange knowledge of modern pop culture icons, like Jack Nicholson, in Aladdin. After all, he tells Aladdin that he’s been in the lamp for the last 10,000 years. How would he have learned that stuff? Who knows? But keep that 10,000-year thing in mind. For whatever reason, many people assume that the Genie is about that old because it’s the only number he says, but that’s not true. We can guesstimate his age by using another thing he says. When speaking to Aladdin about Jasmine, Genie says, “Al, you’re not gonna find another girl like her in a million years. Believe me, I know. I’ve looked.” That would mean that the Genie is at least one million years old. It also means that he was encased in the lamp before humans even evolved.
3. Mother Gothel – 400-Years Old
Mother Gothel is the old crazed witch who kidnaps Rapunzel and uses her hair for its restorative and youth-giving properties in Tangled. However, long before Rapunzel was born, there was the flower that grew from a drop of sunlight. This flower was used by Mother Gothel for a long period of time. So, exactly how old is Mother Gothel? The answer is in her clothes. The wardrobe she has is based on designs from clothes in the 1400s-1500s. We can figure that Tangled takes place in the mid-1800s, which would put Mother Gothel between 350-450 years old. When you consider that Mother Gothel would have been around in those early of days, the theory that she and the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs could be related (or the same person) becomes a lot more plausible.
2. Woody – 51-Years Old
Since Woody and the gang of toys are experiencing so many new things in Toy Story, we are tempted to think that all of them are around the same age, but we know that’s not the case. If you think back, you’ll remember that Woody is from another age, but we often don’t consider how long this guy’s been around. Sure, Tom Hanks does the voice and he’s an adult, but the voices of the toys are meant to mirror their character. Tim Allen voices Buzz Lightyear and he’s brand new. So, let’s do some math. Andy is about to celebrate his sixth birthday in the film and the year is 1995 (the same year the film was released). Andy’s mom calls Woody “an old family toy.” Later, he’s called a “hand-me-down cowboy doll,” which we can then assume means that Andy’s dad handed it down, otherwise Andy’s mom would have called it her toy. We know that Woody was a once-popular toy from the 1950s TV show called Woody’s Roundup, which ran from 1949-1957. So, if we assume that Woody was purchased at the height of his popularity, in 1955 or so, that would make him 40-years old in Toy Story. In Toy Story 3, Woody would be 51-Years old.
1. Chewbacca – 234-Years Old
When it comes to Wookies, it’s difficult to decipher just how old they are because of the fur. Most people would assume that he was a young Wookie when he and Han Solo first started adventuring. It would be a safe bet to say that he’s the same age as Han Solo (63). But he isn’t. There’s a lot of information about the world of Star Wars beyond what we learn in the films, so we do know specific ages. Chewbacca was born in the year 200 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin). The battle of Yavin was finished when the Death Star was destroyed, which coincides with Star Wars: A New Hope. That means that Chewbacca was 200-years old in A New Hope and 234-years old in The Force Awakens. That’s one old Wookie.
