There’s no point in hiding it. Feuds between celebrities are hella entertaining, to the point where many of us highly anticipate (and maybe lose sleep over) the possibility of a squabble, no matter how insignificant or minuscule it may be. Due to our insatiable thirst for conflict, we’ve taken even the most bizarre rumors as irrefutable truth, even from news sources that may be infamous for manipulating reality.
That said, not all beefs are great. A feud between co-stars could create a rift between all the “participants” involved, making it highly unlikely they will work together again… thus ruining many shows and movies we love.
Even though the lives of celebrities are in the spotlight for us to gawk at 24/7, news concerning their private lives is inundated with rumors and hearsay, making it difficult to discern what’s real or fake. Here’s a list of 15 rumors regarding potential feuds between costars that could’ve been damaging.
15. Theo James vs Shailene Woodley (Divergent)
For fans of the Divergent series, the possibility that the final installment Ascendant, may never make the silver screen is very, very real. As for the reason? That’s where things get a little mirky.
There are rumors Theo James (Tobias “Four” Eaton) and Shailene Woodley (Beatrice “Tris” Prior) aren’t talking. Alleged reports say their non-speaking “situation” is due to Theo focusing on his role in the next installment of Underworld. Others claim it’s because of the alleged talks of Ascendant may become a straight-to-TV effort. This is due to its predecessor’s financial flop, grossing a mere $179 million worldwide, branding it as the lowest-grossing Divergent film franchise. Whether Theo and Shailene are on speaking terms or not, the likelihood that there will be a movie or a direct-to-TV film seems close to nil.
14. Zach Galifianakis vs Will Ferrell (The Campaign)
The possibility that Will Ferrell may be feuding with anybody is pretty disheartening. It’s even more upsetting when Zach Galifianakis is ostensibly involved. But to quote Ferrell’s character Ricky Bobby from the film Talladega Nights, “thank the dear lord baby Jesus,” because such a conflict can’t possibly exist!
Galifianakis and Ferrel united to create the strange film entitled The Campaign. While the two comedians have never worked together since, let’s hope it’s a possibility in the future. However, if the rumors of their feud are true, then it would have made the prospect even less likely.
According to reports, after the two actors were called in to do some re-shoots for the 2012 film, Galifianakis exploded “at the 11th hour,” bickering “so openly” with Ferrell that the tension between them felt so thick that “you could cut it with a knife.” In response to the allegations, one of Ferell’s reps said the rumors were the product of “someone’s stupid imagination.” Thanks be to sweet baby Jesus!
13. Bryce Dallas vs Chris Pratt (Jurassic World)
Those who thought it was cool Jurassic Park was making a comeback and the throngs of adoring fans of Chris Pratt (once he got those sexy abs) were ecstatic when Jurassic World was announced. However, when it came to a potential rumor surrounding Pratt and his co-star Bryce Dallas, it threw the franchise’s future into jeopardy.
After being alerted via Twitter about certain rumors regarding a behind-the-scenes rift, Dallas not only denied the reports but basically compared Pratt to a God tweeting “I worship Chris!”
Another rumor soon emerged though, with reports suggesting Pratt downright hated Dallas. As soon as Pratt got wind of these rumors, he publicly announced Dallas was his “spirit animal.” So we think it’s safe to assume both actors like each other, and will most likely star in future sequels of the Jurassic World franchise together.
12. Leighton Meester vs Blake Lively (Gossip Girl)
It’s amazing when a rivalry in a TV show ostensibly trickles into real life. Such is the case between Blake Lively and Leighton Meester (Serena Van Der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf respectively) from Gossip Girl whose relationship status as “BFFs” in the show was rife with conflict, backstabbing and, yes, gossip.
From 2007 to 2012, everyone was talking about their potential feud beyond the camera. But neither Lively nor Meester addressed it (maybe to fuel speculation). However, Lively finally said something years later: “The press always tries to pit women against each other,” she said. “Don’t fall for it. We should be celebrating women’s bonds.”
11. Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner vs Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers)
Imagine what The Avengers film would be like without Chris Evans as Captain America, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. This terrifying prospect could’ve very well happened because of a media controversy surrounding comments made by both Renner and Evans.
During an interview, Evans and Renner called Black Widow a “whore,” because she has multiple romances within the Marvel universe. Renner said “she’s a slut,” and Evans seemingly agreed while laughing on camera. As soon as this interview came out, there was a lot of backlash. Both actors eventually had to apologize, but Renner ended up getting the last laugh. He provided a statement layered with sarcasm and resentment, saying “I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone.” Luckily Johansson wasn’t offended in the end, and we can look forward to seeing all three actors in upcoming Marvel films.
10. Al Pacino vs Robert De Niro
People who deem each other as rivals are rarely friends. They may be “friendly,” but that’s about it. In a 2008 interview, it was revealed that Al Pacino and Robert De Niro had a rivalry going on when they were younger.
In all likelihood, their Italian heritage and similar appearances may have had something to do with it. Actually, it’s quite likely. As Hollywood’s premier Italian-American actors, they were undoubtedly considered for the same roles.
They’ve starred in many films together including the Godfather franchise and the 1995 film Heat. In an alternative reality, it’s very possible a feud could’ve led both men to hating each other, to the point where they would’ve never agreed to act together. Just try to imagine The Godfather II with a young Vito Corleone not played by De Niro. Not so great, huh?
9. Robert Pattison vs Daniel Radcliff (Harry Potter)
This feud would’ve been so much more intense if it happened years ago. It’s only appropriate, or maybe profoundly ironic, that there’s some tension between these former friends — as well as former Hogwarts students and Gryffindor housemates — Robert Pattison (Cedric Diggory) and Daniel Radcliff (Harry Potter). The irony is manifest in that their little row revolves around their respective lady friends, much like their magical characters’ love interest in the same witch, Cho Chang (Katie Liu Leung).
The two wizarding actors, while once friends in real life, have had difficulties getting along with each other’s girlfriends. Radcliffe reportedly called Rob’s fiancée Tahliah Debrett Barnett (also known as the singer FKA Twigs), “a first class witch who’s sucking the life out of Rob.”
Now this comment would’ve been mortifying if Radcliff had said these comments a few years ago about Pattison’s girlfriend, because it could’ve jeopardized the Harry Potter film franchise. But since it’s 2017, and J.K. Rowling has confirmed she won’t be adapting Harry Potter And The Cursed Child into a film, we can breathe a sigh of relief.
That said, there have been rumors Warner Bros has spoken to Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Radcliffe about a possible Cursed Child film. While this is exciting, we refuse to believe anything until Rowling confirms it.
8. Vin Diesel vs Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (The Fast And The Furious)
This conflict is quite possibly very much real, but the latest news regarding this said feud is getting really ridiculous.
For fans who love the Fast and the Furious franchise, this may really upset you. It all began when Dwayne Johnson got the great idea to call out one of his male co-stars who was behaving like a “candy ass,” and “chicken s**t.”
Speculation surrounding who Johnson was referring to, reached an all time high soon afterwards. But the rumors went into overdrive when Johnson failed to include his co-star Vin Diesel in a “thank you” message to the crew on his Instagram. Clarity at last.
Then Diesel did something really unexpected. He praised his fellow actors including Johnson via Facebook Live. But he threw some shade as well revealing Luke Hobbs, the character played by Johnson was originally meant to be portrayed by Tommy Lee Jones. Here’s the crazy part. And now there’s speculation that Johnson is looking to go at it with Vin Diesel at WrestleMania. That would be insane. It makes the feud feel staged, but it’s still wildly awesome.
7. Jerome Flynn vs Lena Headey (Game of Thrones)
When a relationship takes a wrong turn, it can sometimes lead to catastrophic consequences on someone’s career. This was the case for Lena Headey, who plays Cersei Lannister and for Jerome Flynn, who plays Bronn in the hit HBO show Game of Thrones.
The internet was ablaze with speculation when reports emerged the two former lovers weren’t on speaking terms. There was even a rumor saying they both couldn’t be in the room at the same time and they should be “kept apart at all costs.”
But, when Jerome Flynn was asked about Headey in an interview, his response was surprising. He revealed he didn’t have issues being in the same room as the actress, and he couldn’t rule out a future romantic reconciliation with the actress. Therefore, our beloved television series is sparred from romantic rifts.
6. Matt Damon vs Ben Affleck… or Ben Affleck vs Ben Affleck
Dogma. Good Will Hunting. Field of Dreams. These are but a few of Matt Daman and Ben Affleck’s collaborations. The two celebs are in every sense close friends. So it’s only natural for the tabloids to run a muck in that particular arena, hoping to find some dirt on the two.
Turns out, there actually is some “dirt.” Everything wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for the bros, especially for Affleck. Specifically when we look at his career and romantic life during the period when he was with Jennifer Lopez. When recalling that time, Damon said it “was painful being Affleck’s friend,” because everyone in Hollywood labeled him as a “talentless kind of meathead.” While it was undoubtedly difficult for Damon to see his friend struggle, this strain could’ve led to a bromance breakup. Luckily this never happened.
5. Tina Fey vs Amy Poehler
When working on their film The Nest, an insider from OK! magazine claimed Poehler was driving Fey absolutely crazy by constantly criticizing the script and filming angles, even demanding reshoots if Tina was on camera more than her. This ostentatious behaviour allegedly culminated to Fey confronting Poehler, telling her to chill out. This act of defiance reportedly infuriated Poehler all the more. But as you can imagine, the two comedians have said otherwise, saying it’s “total fabrication” and that there was no “squabble” going on at all.
4. Jeri Ryan vs Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek: Voyager)
It sucks when women can’t get along unless it ends in an epic battle. For fans of Star Trek: Voyager, the sheer heat that Kate Mulgrew (Captain Kathryn Janeway) ostensibly directed at Jeri Ryan (Seven Of Nine) after Ryan’s character replaced Jennifer Lien (Kes) is upsetting. From the way it sounds, their feud could’ve potentially ended the show before its final seventh season.
The issue was never really addressed when Voyager was still airing (besides the endless talks on the subject beyond the show) until Ryan appeared on Aisha Tyler’s Girl on Guy podcast. Of course, Ryan remained completely ambiguous in her response (she never named Mulgrew directly). But it’s pretty clear whom Ryan was talking about: Mulgrew.
3. Owen Wilson vs Ben Stiller (Steven Spielberg)
Owen Wilson might be known for playing the perpetual funny guy in films, but that doesn’t mean he’s actually happy. Sometimes, it’s the hilarious loud mouths who are really struggling on the inside. See, Wilson tried committing suicide.
News ran rampant with theories as to what led Wilson down that dark path. One of the more trusted stories was published in the National Enquirer, which stated that Wilson, who was part of a comedy project with long-time friend Ben Stiller and Steven Spielberg. Wilson apparently wasn’t delivering, forcing Stiller and Spielberg to fire him. And guess where Wilson was apparently “staying” when he received the news? In his hospital bed. Damn.
However, it’s said that Stiller and Spielberg decided to truncate a level of detachment in their firing process (therefore alleviating some of the guilt that would inevitably transpire) by contacting Owen’s people, rather than their people contacting Owen’s.
One thing we do know is that the firing didn’t ruin Owen and Stiller’s relationship. Since then, we’ve had all of the Night at the Museum films, and, probably the best “treat” of all, the highly anticipated Zoolander 2, a followup to the original film without the number two in its title.
2. Brad Pitt vs George Clooney
Bitches be crazy. As it turns out, no matter how strong-willed Angelina Jolie might be, she can never tear apart the iron-clad relationship between beloved acting stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney. How many movies have they starred in together? 500? We wouldn’t be surprised if that were the actual number.
Well, at one point, it appeared as though there might’ve been trouble in paradise. Someone designated as a “mutual pal” in Star was quoted as saying that Jolie never liked Clooney and had both attempted and succeeded in driving a “wedge” between the famous bromance. This buddy went on to say that now, because of Pitt and Jolie’s split, the two were now back in each other’s lives.
1. Jamie Dornan vs Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey)
Even though a possible scandal involving co-stars Jamie Dornon and Dakota Johnson, the ultra S&M practicing couple in Fifty Shades of Grey, wouldn’t affect the release of the nascent franchise’s second effort Fifty Shades Darker, it wouldn’t help matters for subsequent releases.
This particular rumor is a triple whammy. It includes an alleged ongoing feud, affair and, yes, pregnancy. If speculation regarding a child born outta wedlock wasn’t bad enough, Dornan has been married for three years and has not one, but two children already! When kids are involved, the consequences of something stupid like an affair just get overtly messy. Oh, that’s right. The thankfully fake pregnancy also went hand-in-hand with even another ludicrous story: that the two co-stars eloped.
But none of that is true. Everyone, go home. There’s nothing to see here.
