Hollywood has a tendency to portray blondes as the much more beautiful and outgoing characters in both television and film, while the brunettes are seen as mousy and homebodies. Blondes are viewed as ultra-sexy and exponential capacity to have more fun. Yet, it’s interesting how many brunettes in Hollywood seem to be smashing that same old stereotype. Megan Fox never seemed to have any troubles coming off as fun and sexy, even though she was eventually replaced by the blonde, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, in the third installment of the Transformers franchise. Fox made waves for her damaging statements comparing Michael Bay to Hitler, which is what got her kicked out of the franchise and ultimately blackballed from Hollywood. Yet, if it weren’t for her foolish comments, she would probably still be considered Hollywood’s hottest new “It” girl.
It’s become obvious that it isn’t the hair color that makes the celebrity and instead, it’s the personality and skill that furthers their career and gives off a favorable public persona. In fact, there are a number of blonde celebrities that don’t seem like they’re having the best time in either their professional or personal lives. From Britney Spears’ countless meltdowns to Miley Cyrus going blonde and becoming a sideshow act, it seems like the brunettes in Hollywood are making far more of themselves than anyone truly gives them credit for. Check out our list of the 15 brunettes that have way more fun than blondes and see how hair color is nothing but a shade in today’s Hollywood.
15. Kat Dennings
Kat Dennings is best known for playing the role of Max Black on the hit TV sitcom, 2 Broke Girls, but she is just one-half of the power duo of the series. While Dennings is the dark-haired beauty, Beth Behrs plays her quirky blonde gal pal and coworker, Caroline Channing. In the series, Behrs is often used more for the eye candy in various storylines, typically finding a way to appear scantily-clad in almost every episode. However, just because she has more scenes of risqué ensembles doesn’t mean she is the true star of the show. In fact, it’s Dennings that is most recognized in the series, while not many people even know Behrs unless she’s in her 2 Broke Girls waitress costume. Dennings also seems to get far more opportunities to act on the big screen than Behrs and has a long list of films under her belt, including a portrayal in the Thor film series.
14. Kim Kardashian
When she was first introduced to the world, she was either only referenced as Paris Hilton’s friend or the girl that was in the Ray J sex tape. Once she was able to make more of a name for herself through the reality series, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, people finally began to forget some of the most embarrassing moments of her early life. Yet, it’s interesting that she started off as Paris Hilton’s sidekick and now she is known as the most successful reality TV star of all time. Paris Hilton, on the other hand, has already reached her heyday and is definitely on the decline in the western world. There was a time when Kim dyed her hair blonde but she was heavily criticized for how the look came out. She quickly went back to her dark tresses and fans were left hoping that she never tries to go back to the blonde look again.
13. Jessica Biel
When Jessica Biel first started off as an actress, there was a lot of chatter about her potential as a film star. There was talk of her being a big fish in a small pond due to her acting portrayal on the family-drama, 7th Heaven. Once she transitioned to the big screen, there seemed to be a lot of promise after the rave reviews she received from the film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Yet, things got a little stagnant in her career and it was during this time that she decided to change up her look and become blonde. Yet, the blonde look completely washed out her complexion and it made her look like every other budding actress in Hollywood. Once she changed it back to brown, she met and married her husband, Justin Timberlake. The couple started a family together and the brunette look is the perfect way to show her in her new (and most important) role as a wife and mother.
12. Rachel McAdams
When Rachel McAdams first achieved iconic status in film through the role of Allie Hamilton in The Notebook, she had a much lighter hair tone than the dark tresses of today. She went on to star in a number of other films but she was heavily criticized for trying to play the same role over and over. Her biggest criticism came from the 2012 film, The Vow, since she had to play flashback scenes where she was supposed to be much younger and yet, she appeared quite older. McAdams needed to do something to revamp her career in a big way and her lightened hairstyle in the film, Aloha, was definitely not helping. She chose to get back to her roots (literally) and went for a much darker look when she appeared in the TV series, True Detective. She played a completely opposite character from anything she’s played before and was hailed for her bravery and skill on the small screen.
11. Lauren Cohan
When The Walking Dead introduced the sisters that were living with their father, Hershel Greene, it was plain to see that Maggie was going to be a force to be reckoned with on the series. Played by Lauren Cohan, this feisty brunette proved that she was more than just a farmer’s daughter when she came charging through on her horse while killing walkers all around her. Maggie’s sister, Beth, was the blonde beauty with the angelic voice but she didn’t seem to have the same star power. Beth was ultimately killed off of the series, while Maggie continues to be a strong character with a growing storyline. Off the set of The Walking Dead, Cohan is already starting to branch out into film and recently showcased her scream queen talents in the horror film, The Boy.
10. Gal Gadot
It seems like the fascination with superheroes and comic book characters has a revolving door that only comes around once in a generation. While the world was once obsessed with the idea of a modern day Catwoman, the new fascination is with Wonder Woman. There were a number of actresses that were being pushed forward by fans to play this iconic superhero but it was Gal Gadot that got the role for the DC Extended Universe. Her signature brown locks and her background as an Israel Defense Forces soldier inevitably helped to land her the role and she’s having a huge amount of fun on this new roller coaster she’s incurring in her career. She already starred in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the Wonder Woman film is already getting a huge amount of buzz.
9. Olivia Munn
Olivia Munn appeared in her first feature film in 2004 but many of her roles were thought of as small and supporting. While she is by no means thought of as a full-on movie star, she is definitely starting to increase her fame status. Her portrayal as Psylocke in the film, X-Men: Apocalypse, was a great addition to the X-Men franchise and she had a great time promoting the film. In one British daytime series, Sunday Brunch, Munn was seen bringing Piers Morgan down a few pegs and drank like a fish throughout the segment. Seeing what she’s like when she’s not on a movie set is a great way to show off her fun factor. Yet, the biggest incident in her personal life that showed just how she gets down was when her longtime boyfriend, Aaron Rodgers, released a photo of her on his Snapchat. The caption read, “The Super Bowl can suck it,” and the photo showed a very intimate photo of Munn.
8. Emmy Rossum
There are some actresses that change their look in order to obtain a part and there are others that completely redefine the character due to their stellar performance. When showrunners for the hit TV series, Shameless, were looking for an actress to play Fiona Gallagher, their initial search was for an “average-looking overweight blonde girl.” Yet, Emmy Rossum showed up and did such an amazing job in her portrayal that they wound up changing the character altogether. Rather than an overweight blonde, they got a brunette with an amazing physique. This probably came in handy with all of the nude scenes of her in the TV series and it also worked out for Rossum since she’s playing a lead character on one of the most popular shows on television.
7. Victoria Beckham
When Victoria Beckham was first introduced to the world through the girl group, Spice Girls, she had a tendency to flip flop between blonde and brunette. While this may have been alright for the ‘90s style of that time, it definitely wasn’t the right look to spark her future career as a fashion icon. Once she married her sports star husband, David Beckham, there was a certain expectation for her to be the perfect counterpart to his ultra sex appeal. Not only did she achieve that but she went above and beyond to create a brand all her own. Her sleek brunette locks have been the perfect accent to her posh style and designer clothing line. Gone are the days of the push up bras with the bleach blonde hair and now she’s mastered the waif look with the sophisticated brown tresses.
6. Kate Beckinsale
There are some actresses that can boast the ability to change between different hair colors with ease and can portray various characters by changing up their look. Yet, not all actresses have that stellar ability. Kate Beckinsale tried that when she changed her signature brunette tresses to a blonde look but it definitely didn’t work for her. She quickly changed it back to brown and she was able to turn that look into her signature style. There’s no way she would have been able to portray half of her most famous roles if she were to continue her blonde look. Her most famous role was in the Underworld film series where the premise of the storyline is the fact that she looked so much like Sonja, the daughter of Victor.
5. Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway has had a long and successful career as an actress but she suffered the fate of so many other celebrities that flew a little too close to the sun. While she was once thought of as America’s Sweetheart, the media quickly turned on her to portray her in not a very favorable light. Hathaway wound up taking a little time away from the spotlight in order to let the public have a break from seeing her on every red carpet and film premiere. She also changed her hair to give herself a whole new look. The general consensus wasn’t that she looked bad as a blonde but her new look wasn’t exactly receiving a rave review. She quickly changed her hair back to brown and she’s finally starting to see more favor on behalf of the public. Obviously, she wasn’t having too much fun as a blonde and decided to stick to her signature look.
Like so many celebrities in Hollywood, Rihanna changed up her look in order to sport some blonde locks. Yet, it wasn’t doing her any favors with her fans. The blonde hairstyle seemed to take away from the edginess of her public persona and she soon went back to the brunette hairstyle. Once she did, she realized she could have much more fun with her style if she stuck with her naturally brown hair. From the GQ photo shoot where her brown locks were mingled with a Medusa look to the brown braids she did in an effort to start a new trend, Rihanna proved that she could have far more fun without having to go blonde. This may also be due to the fact that there were so many other female artists that went blonde at the same time. Yet, it’s hard to compare Rihanna’s incredible style to the blonde wigs often worn by the likes of Nicki Minaj.
3. Miranda Kerr
Miranda Kerr is thought of as one of the world’s most beautiful supermodels and has been able to branch out beyond her status as a Victoria’s Secret Angel. While she’s gone blonde in the past, it’s her dark hair and light eyes that truly make her standout as an exotic beauty. Kerr may have dabbled in a few hair color changes just out of boredom in her marriage to Orlando Bloom from 2010 to 2013 but she’s definitely having more fun now that she’s embraced her brunette look. She was linked to a number of different celebrities, including Justin Bieber, but finally settled down to the Snapchat cofounder and CEO, Evan Spiegel. The two purchased a $12 million mansion together and Kerr was quick to take to social media to post a photo of her jaw-dropping engagement ring.
2. Dakota Johnson
As the daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson, it should be no surprise that she spent some time as a blonde. Yet, when Dakota Johnson began branching out as an actress in her own right, she needed to have a certain look that was different from all the rest of the young celebrities trying to make their mark on the big screen. Her dark locks were just the thing to land her the role in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise and now she’s thought of as a bona fide film star. Her role as Anastasia Steele would never have come to her as a blonde and it’s not just her character on the screen that allows her to stand out from all of her blonde co-stars. Johnson will inevitably maintain her brunette locks for future film roles since it’s become her signature look.
1. Eva Green
When Eva Green first burst onto the acting scene in the highly controversial film, The Dreamers, filmmakers saw an endless possibility in her potential. She had a fearlessness that jumped out of the screen and she was completely unencumbered in her character portrayals. Green went on to star as a Bond girl in Casino Royale but is probably best remembered for her role as Vanessa Ives in the TV series, Penny Dreadful. No one can say that she’s an actress that finds it difficult to have a bit of fun since almost all of the characters she’s played have pushed her to the limits. It’s safe to say that the world hasn’t seen the last of Eva Green, even though her most recent film, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, was far less controversial than the typical characters she has portrayed.
