When you are trying to make a name for yourself as an actor, you’re definitely going to be open to taking a variety of roles in Hollywood. After all, any break is a good break right? Thankfully for some of the actors and actresses on our list below, their first ever role was in some of the biggest and most successful movies of all-time.
Others had debuts that may have only consisted of one line, and for some of our actresses on our list, their debut movie featured Hollywood getting a good look at every part of their body.
But what’s cooler than seeing these stars in movies that, in some cases, are decades old? Seeing what they’re up to now! Which is why we also included a photo from either their most recent role or in some instances, an upcoming movie (including some that are so recent, they’re still in theaters).
Do you know what Steve Carell and Emma Stone are working on? How about Jonah Hill and Leo? You’re about to!
15. Salma Hayek: Desperado (1995) – Beatriz Comes To Dinner (2017)
Salma Hayek may have starred in Desperado, but we’re sure she never has to act ‘desperado’ to try and land herself a man!
Okay, that wasn’t the best joke in the world, but what if we tell you that in her debut role Hayek gets herself into some very adult situations that you are sure to not forget anytime soon.
You’ll have to wait until June to see if Hayek will be letting the world see all of her again in her upcoming movie Beatriz Comes to Dinner. Hayek will play the role of a holistic medicine practitioner whose car ends up breaking down, leading her to attend a nearby party.
The movie also stars the incredibly talented Connie Britton and John Lithgow.
14. Angelina Jolie: Cyborg 2 (1993) – By The Sea (2015)
Granted she has also lent her voice again to the Kung Fu: Panda series, but is that really enough to wash that taste out of your mouth?
But can you guess the sexy connection between her debut movie, Cyborg 2 and By The Sea? Despite being over two decades later, Jolie is comfortable leaving you speechless wearing only her birthday suit in both movies.
13. Matt Damon: Mystic Pizza (1988) – The Great Wall (2017)
If Matt Damon could go back in time, we’re sure he would have advised himself to not take the role in The Great Wall. The movie was panned by critics earning only 35% and was also estimated to have cost the studio roughly $75 million to produce.
While this was clearly a huge disappointment, it’s hard to argue with giving Damon the leading role in a movie. After all, not only is he handsome but it’s not like he has any shortage of box office success with some of his other roles like the Bourne series.
12. Emma Stone: Superbad (2007) – Battle Of The Sexes (2017)
Emma Stone is one of the biggest actresses in Hollywood right now after securing her Best Actress award for La La Land. Yet when she was breaking into Hollywood it was her comedic side that she got to show off in Superbad.
And while you may be used to ogling over her appearance, she’s definitely not going to woo you with her sex appeal in her upcoming film Battle of the Sexes.
The movie stars Stone as famed tennis player Billy Jean King and faces off against Steve Carell who plays Bobby Riggs. The event which took place back in 1973 is one of the most historic events in tennis history and we’re sure both actors will be bringing their A-Game.
11. Natalie Portman: Leon (1994) – Song To Song (2017)
Are you ready for a real flashback? How about jumping all the way back to 1994 to see a very young Natalie Portman hanging out with a hitman in Leon: The Professional. The movie attained a cult following and is brilliantly directed and written by Luc Benson who is also behind The Fifth Element. Plus it stars Gary Oldman – sold yet?
But when Portman isn’t hanging out with Commissioner Gordon, she’s getting close with Magneto! Michael Fassbender, Ryan Gosling and Rooney Mara help round out the outstanding cast for the Terrence Malick movie Song to Song.
10. Amy Adams: Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999) – Arrival (2016)
At least the movie producers got the title right casting Amy Adams in the movie Drop Dead Gorgeous. While the movie failed to impress with critics earning only 28%, Adams was still able to receive some praise for her performance in the movie and you can imagine that helped keep her motivated.
Adams was also no stranger to praise for her recent role in Arrival. While she failed to receive an Academy Award nomination for her role, she was still nominated for a Golden Globe but lost out to Isabella Huppert for her role in Elle.
9. Charlize Theron: 2 Days In The Valley (1996) – Atomic Blonde (2017)
Charlize Theron may have left you speechless with her haunting performance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos, or cheering in Mad Max but in her debut movie 2 Days in the Valley it is her sex appeal that gets dialled up to 11.
Theron wears several provocative outfits in the movie and considering the success of her career, which has included several other opportunities to let the clothes hit the floor, we’re sure she was happy with her decision.
8. Edward Norton: Primal Fear (1996) – Collateral Beauty (2016)
While some of our actors had small roles in their debut, Norton was such a fundamental part of Primal Fear that he took home a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and was nominated for an Oscar.
It’s definitely not the only time Norton has been praised for a role, but his most recent movie Collateral Beauty which earned 12% on RottenTomatoes was definitely not one of them.
7. Scarlett Johansson: North (1994) – Ghost In The Shell (2017)
Scarlett Johansson might very well be the best looking girl in Hollywood. Not only is she beautiful as a blonde, but the above photo on the right also makes it abundantly clear that she rocks darker shades as well. Granted we also had The Avengers franchise as more than enough proof of that.
If Johansson looks comfortable in front of the camera, that’s probably because she’s been doing it most of her life, debuting way back in 1994 in North. Which also gives you a young Elijah Wood, just throwing that out there.
6. Jennifer Lawrence: Garden Party (2008) – Passengers (2016)
You can imagine that present-day Jennifer Lawrence would absolutely give the younger version of her quite the stare-down if she saw her smoking. Yet it was what the role called for when Lawrence made her debut back in Garden Party in 2008.
Lawrence has found monumental success as an actress since then, even if her most recent movie Passengers failed to have the impact she had hoped with critics, earning only 31%.
You can expect Lawrence to flex her funny bone in the somewhat near future, as she has come out and said that her and comedian Amy Schumer have written a project together and will both star in it.
5. Johnny Depp: Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) – Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)
Johnny Depp has gotten himself in some pretty tricky situations as Jack Sparrow (sorry, Captain Jack Sparrow) in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but at least he never had Freddy Kruger coming after him.
If he had, the series definitely would not be pulling into port with its 5th instalment, set to come out on May 26th.
4. Leonardo DiCaprio: Critters 3 (1991) – The Revenant (2015)
If there is one thing that should become very clear when looking at the above photos, it’s that Leonardo DiCaprio has clearly always kept the same hairstyle!
And while DiCaprio may have gotten his start way back in 1991 in the horror comedy Critters 3, he definitely got a lot more familiar with blood in his 2015 role The Revenant.
DiCaprio received an Academy Award for his performance in the latter and has since stepped away from the spotlight, at least temporarily. He, along with Jonah Hill, are currently signed on to play leading roles in The Ballad of Richard Jewell which is set to come out in 2018.
3. Catherine Zeta-Jones: 1001 Nights (1990) – Dad’s Army (2016)
Catherine Zeta-Jones was always considered to be one of the biggest sex symbols in Hollywood when she was an active actress. One thing that helps that impression is the fact that she elected to drop her clothes to the floor in her debut movie 1001 Nights.
The movie failed to make a mark at the box office or with critics, but it definitely didn’t hurt to have that on her resume!
2. Dwayne Johnson: The Scorpion King (2002) – The Fate Of The Furious (2017)
Dwayne Johnson has become a significantly stronger actor than the one we first saw in The Mummy Returns. It’s not hard to see why, as Johnson has constantly been praised by other people in the industry (including famed director Steven Spielberg) for his outstanding dedication.
One person who may not be quite as big a fan is allegedly Vin Diesel who Johnson stars alongside with in the Fast and the Furious franchise. Reports of fighting “leaked” during the filming of the movie and the two have been kept separate on the press tour.
1. Jessica Chastain: Jolene (2008) – Zookeeper’s Wife (2017)
Jessica Chastain is one of the most ravishing redheads in Hollywood and hasn’t been afraid to let the world check out her body for a role. You can imagine part of why she is comfortable baring it all is that she had a positive experience acting out some very adult situations for her first film, Jolene.
Her more recent role The Zookeeper’s Wife is set in 1939 and stars Chastain and her attempts to run a zoo in Warsaw during WWII.
While she won’t be baring it all for the role, anyone who is a fan of Chastain’s work is doing themselves a disservice to not check it out.
