However, there is a long history of women who have lead a double life for one reason or another. During the Civil War, many women wanted to serve their countries, but were unable to enlist as women. Instead, they disguised themselves as men in order to enlist. Sarah Emma Edmonds even received a military pension after her true identity was discovered.
