He’s been known for his savage knockout power, his immeasurable ego and his brazen attitude. Conor “The Notorious” McGregor’s punch has placed him on the fast track to UFC stardom.
The renowned fighter has come a long way from his small town in Ireland to become the UFC’s World Champion in Las Vegas, USA. He’s infamous for his uncensored interviews and reigning alter ego.
We figured all this audacious trash-talking may have you wondering who is this guy that’s set to be the next UFC superstar?
In his defence he did defeat Jose Aldo in just over 10 seconds and walk away with $7 million. Now he is one of the highest paid MMA fighters in the world – a dark contrast to his days cashing in on social welfare checks.
Conor McGregor may be well known across the world for his unapologetic attitude and knockout power, but we decided to reveal a few surprising facts that you may not know about the 27-year-old UFC star.
11. He Was Asked To Be A Villain In A James Bond Movie
They say a James Bond movie is only as good as its villain. Perhaps it’s true as looking back over the years the films have included some notorious henchmen and masterminds hell bent on world domination and destruction. McGregor could have been one of them as he was offered a chance to audition for a role in the popular franchise. His response – “I’m not that person. Do you know what I mean? I’m just doing it having a laugh. Don’t start putting in those serious things. It’s the wrong time to say it to me when I’m cutting weight. Maybe after the fight when I’m feeling better. We’ll mess about and see what happens…” At the end of the day, it’s a seven figure thing so perhaps he may reconsider and give it a go after all.
10. He’s A Mama’s Boy
Conor McGregor revealed he does have a softer side as he is a self-confessed Mama’s Boy. Mom to the UFC star, Margaret McGregor supported her son from the early days in Ireland to his UFC interim belt win in sunny Las Vegas. She has played a big role in helping McGregor pursue his career and go on to become one of the best featherweights the world has ever seen.
9. He Calls His Alter Ego Mystic Mac
UFC fighter Conor McGregor has one brazen attitude and is well known throughout the MMA community as a brash, arrogant opponent. So it may come as no surprise to fans to hear that he has an alter ego. What may be surprising though is the fact that he channels this alter ego, which he calls “Mystic Mac”. He claims to be able to see the future which leads him to make predictions about his future fights. He predicted a first round knockout with Diego Brandao before heading into UFC Fight Night: McGregor vs. Brandao in Dublin and went on to earn “Performance of the Night” honours. Then again at UFC 178, he predicted that he would get the win in the first round. Mystic Mac delivered and McGregor walked away winning the second consecutive fight.
8. McGregor Aids and Abets Autograph Seekers
It all began with McGregor’s rise to fame and the build up to the UFC Fight Night in Boston back in 2015. The UFC star was greeted by a large crowd of fans. Amongst the crowd were a select group of autograph seekers who weren’t just there to snap a selfie. They set out to obtain a signature or signed item or two which they could then resell for a profit. Conor McGregor is fully aware and supports them regardless. He can be seen interacting with fans on a recent episode of the UFC’s “Embedded” series on YouTube.
“They go through the hustle of standing outside in the cold, getting the pictures printed, showing up,” McGregor said. “At the end of the day, they’re supporting the event. At the end of the day, they are fans of the show because they understand the fighters, they understand the pictures, and they understand everything.”
7. He Used To Be Bullied
Conor McGregor may have defeated Jose Aldo in just over 10 seconds to become the latest UFC featherweight champion but it wasn’t always this easy for the MMA fighter. “I think I had this face that bullies just liked beating up” McGregor told MMAJunkie.com. He was constantly bullied at school and picked on by the other children. Perhaps it was due to the fact that he was a lot smaller and weaker than most boys his age, making him an easier target. It was for this reason that McGregor decided to try combat sport and turn his fate around.
6. Conor McGregor Loves his Food
Would it surprise you to hear McGregor’s least favourite part of fighting is the diet? The UFC fighter is a strong opponent and has to stay in his elite shape in order to perform at the high level that he does. Unbeknownst to us, their weight is more crucial to their athletic endeavours than any other sport in the world. McGregor’s routine includes rigorous training sessions, daily workouts and calorie counting. “I look forward to the day when I’m old and able to eat what I want. I’ll be a little happy fat guy,” McGregor said. We’re not sure Mystic Mac approves…
5. He Wanted To Became A Professional Footballer
Sports were always a big part of McGregor’s childhood growing up but fans may not know that he once contemplated becoming a professional footballer. His love of the game was first born when he became an avid supporter of Manchester United and he started playing football at a very young age. He went on to play for “Lourdes Celtic” and his school teams before he got into boxing and then MMA. Eventually a boxing class drew McGregor away from football and he hasn’t looked back since.
4. Used To Be A Plumber
Before embarking on his hugely successful MMA career, Conor McGregor served as an apprentice to a plumber. However his obsession with fighting would soon persuade him to leave his job and pursue combat sports on a full-time basis. This decision was anything but popular with his father who he says gave him ‘daily ass-whoopings’ to get McGregor to go back to his job. But it all worked out for McGregor and his father in the end as he has helped his father to retire. “It’s a beautiful thing to give back to my family. That’s all I really want. That’s what I do this for, to secure my family’s future. I don’t care about anything else. I’m able to spoil people and that’s the best thing” said McGregor in an interview with The Mirror.
3. He Loves Looking Good
Conor McGregor is quite the closet fashionista as his love for impeccable suits and bowties has him gracing the fashion blogs and style magazines all over the world. He’s been known to cultivate a well-groomed beard and moustache and his stylish image is only enhanced by press conference attire. He admittedly will never miss an opportunity to wear a three-piece suit and look good. His hard work has paid off as he just walked away with the award for Most Stylish Man in Ireland recently.
2. He’s Sentimental
We’ll even dare to go so far as to say that Conor McGregor is a softie. Regardless of his brashness, his hardened exterior and his bravado, McGregor is one sentimental softie. During an episode of “The Notorious” documentary in which the UFC fighter stars, he let viewers in on a little secret: he carries around his grandfather’s hat in his gear bag. Whilst he is adamant that he doesn’t believe in superstitions as they show a sign of weakness, he does admit to having some sentiment for his grandfather’s former possessions which has been in his gear bag for over 10 years!
1. He Was On Welfare
We’d hate to say that Conor McGregor is a stereotypical rag to riches story but the young UFC champion went from receiving welfare to a UFC featherweight title fight in just seven days. He’s gone from collecting social welfare to collecting designer suits. The week before his first UFC fight the former plumber collected a welfare check which was valued at just €180. Fast forward one week and he collected a check of US$60,000 after winning Fight of The Night. McGregor once told his parents that he would become a millionaire by the age of 25. It may have taken him two more years to reach his goal but at the age of 27 he is one of the highest paid fighters of his time.
