Did you ever have those babysitting experiences where you heard a bump in the night and prayed that it was just the wind or possibly just an old house creaking? Babysitting is no easy task; you’re put in a position where you have to watch and protect a child that isn’t even yours. As if that’s not bad enough, sometimes, during your babysitting gig, some creepy and downright bizarre things can happen. The movie When a Stranger Calls is based on what horrific things could happen during a babysitting job. In the movie, the girl showed up assuming it would be no different than any other time that she babysat, but she couldn’t have been more wrong. When a stranger does call, he informs her that the children are dead in the house. She calls the police, and they trace the call. When the police call her back, they’re alarmed and inform her that the stranger is calling from inside the house and that she needs to get out of there. The babysitter can’t leave, however, without the children, so she goes up to the room to get them and finds them butchered.
It’s pretty much the worst nightmare of any babysitter. There are many scary babysitting stories out there, many of which will make you rethink babysitting altogether. If you think you can handle it, then continue to read the creepiest babysitting stories out there.
15. Weird Children
When it comes to babysitting, it’s always hard to tell if the kids are normal until you actually babysit them once. In this case, we’re sure the babysitter never returned to the house of two weird children.
“My friend had to babysit his Mom’s friend’s two kids, a boy about 10 and a girl about 8, and he was able to have me hang out as well. The boy was allowed to play outside as long as he stayed near the house, but the girl had to stay inside. The first thing that was weird was the girl never said a word. She sat on the couch and just sat there staring at us with huge eyes. Just… staring. We tried talking to her, but nothing. We went outside to check on the boy and caught him nailing a live snake to a board. We just backed away, went inside, and watched TV until we could go.”
14. Eye Wide Open
We can’t say that we’ve ever heard of babies sleeping with their eyes open so we hope for this girl’s sake that it’s true; otherwise, that would be beyond creepy. This babysitter had a heart-stopping moment when she walked into the baby’s room. “Not scary in a horror movie type way, but nearly gave me a heart attack. As a young teen, I didn’t realize that some babies sleep with their eyes open. Go in to check on the baby after an hour or so, and I had a heart-stopping few seconds when I thought he was dead.” (Reddit)
Yikes, we couldn’t imagine that situation at all, and we would probably have the exact same thoughts that she did. What would you do if you walked in to check on a child and they were lying there with their eyes open?
13. The Persistent Knocker
It’s scary to think that you could be babysitting and some stranger is trying to get into the house. What would you do? It’s scary because there are never any guarantees that the police or any type of help will come in time if the babysitter and the children are in real danger. In the case of this sitter, the stranger who was trying to get into the house was one determined person. If it wasn’t for the squad car doing laps, who knows what could have happened?
“My sister was babysitting once and a guy just came to the door and knocked for a while. She called my mom and my mom called the police department to send a squad car by. The guy left when the cop came, and he came back and knocked again and tried to open the door. The cop drove by one more time, and he didn’t come back.” (Reddit)
12. Pulling Out Knives
What would you do if you babysat a couple of kids and they started playing with knives? You may think it’s a normal thing for kids to get into, but these two kids started fighting each other with the knives. The babysitter ended up taking both kids to the emergency room because they needed stitches. Now, how would you explain such a thing?
“I once had two of the kids I was watching pulled [sic] knives on each other. Calling the boy’s parents so they could take him to the ER for 20+ stitches in his hand was very awkward.”(Diply)
It’s a terrifying experience because it doesn’t seem like a normal situation for children to be in. Why would they continue cutting each other until one needed over 20 stitches? It’s actually pretty frightening, and we’re not sure what we would do in the same situation. Talk about creepy!
11. Violent Children
Some children can be mentally imbalanced or physically violent due to experiences in their lives. Some believe that children can also be born evil and that those are the ones that usually grow up to be serial killers. You have to wonder what happens to make a child kill. In the case of this babysitter, she had to deal with a violent child in a home, and it might be a strong indication that something was seriously wrong with the child.
“The 3-year-old I used to babysit would physically attack me for no reason, and then would manically laugh as I restrained her. She also used to slam her 1-year-old sister’s head into the floor instead of telling her ‘no.’ One time, I was babysitting them overnight and the 3-year-old woke up and poured the shampoo all over the house at 3 am then woke me up to show me.” (Minq)
10. Being Held Hostage
You would think that your biggest fear when babysitting comes from what’s lurking outside, not what’s inside. The babysitter in this story sure realized quickly that the family was the crazy ones. When the parents returned that night, she got a little more than she bargained for.
“The mum and dad came home drunk and fighting. The dad went out to walk the dog, and the mum locked the door with me inside. She kept saying ‘shh-shh’ while the dad screamed from the outside. She started saying things like, ‘He wants to kill himself instead of being with me – who says that?’ I reached for the lock to get out and she pulled my hand back saying, ‘No, leave him for a while.’ I waited as long as I could then busted out of there.” (Daily Mail)
9. An Evil Witch
Paranormal events can be horrific for a babysitter, especially when there are small children to look after.
“I was babysitting a two-month-old & a five-year-old at my house. The five-year-old was sleeping in my mom’s room right across from the baby’s room. I was lying in bed in the baby’s room & it’s like midnight. All of a sudden, my five-year-old niece starts screaming from across the hall. I jump out of bed & find her sitting upright in bed with her eyes closed as if she’s still sleeping & she’s pointing in the corner saying the witch is here! The witch is here! I lay her back down, & she lays down as if nothing had happened. When I walk back into the baby’s room, she’s sitting up & playing patty cake & looking up at the corner in the ceiling. How does a 2-month-old baby know how to play patty cake? I have no flipping idea. Freaked me out.” (Reddit)
8. The Trench Coat Kidnapper
When you’re babysitting, it’s crucial to have the door locked at all times because you never know who may show up.
“I was in grade school and was told to watch my brother. My doorbell rang once, and I didn’t answer because I was taught not to answer the door when young and home alone. Then the doorbell is pressed another five times, so I assume it’s my family or a friend. I go into my dining room and peer through the window. A man in a trench coat with a hat is walking away from my home and starts pacing in my driveway. I freak out and check that my back door is locked and get my brother to do the garage and the front door. The man comes back as my brother is sitting UNDERNEATH the door as the man is now not only knocking and ringing the doorbell but also trying to turn the door knob. After a few minutes, he goes onto the road and reverses… In his KIDNAPPER car down my street. Still wondering what would’ve happened if he turned the knob his first visit to my door.” (Reddit)
7. The Axe Attack
The last thing you expect when babysitting is for one of the children to come after you with an axe. Reminds me of the kid from The Good Son.
“When I was 13, I was babysitting for a neighbor. They had a 9-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter. I usually played around with the son, and the little sister would just tag along. For some reason, she had a fit that day that I never played with her. So, I decided to play dolls with her. Her brother got mad and started having a little fit about it. I rolled my eyes at him and told him he wasn’t a baby; he could handle me playing with his sister. I then went into her room because she wanted to play with the big doll house that was in there. I play with her for a couple of minutes before I heard the son’s footsteps stop in the hall in front of the open door. I turn around and he was holding an ax and looked very, very mad. I reflexively closed the door and held it shut. He started hacking at the door. I had my back up against the door and was holding it shut. I kept imagining him hacking all the way through it into my back. I was screaming and crying for him to please stop. I said, ‘I will play with you. I am sorry, please!’ His parents came home with amazing timing right about then. He ran into his own room and I ran downstairs to them as quickly as I can. I told them what happened. I wonder what happened to him.” (Minq)
6. A Child’s Confession
Some disturbing things can be heard from a child while babysitting. Always pay attention and look out for red flags. This is a story about a situation that was not only creepy but could have also been a cry for help from the little girl. Who knows what goes on in other people’s lives? A babysitter could be a shield against abuse.
“Once, I was babysitting a pair of siblings, one boy around 7 and his sister around four at the time. As I was getting the girl ready for bed, she ran out of her room naked as her brother screamed, “Ewwww gross put your clothes on; I don’t like naked girls.”
5. Future Serial Killer
Children say the darndest things, but in this case, the babysitter was threatened, and you have to wonder if the child had a little of The Good Son in him. I don’t think I would return to babysit if a kid said he wanted to shoot me. “One of my first babysitting jobs was when I was 16, and I babysat three young kids. The family was avid hunters, and the oldest kid, probably 9, regularly told me how he wanted to tie me up and shoot me. The same child also locked me out of the house and shot at me with water guns. The middle child, around 6, hated wearing pants and underwear, and I often had to chase her around the house worrying the neighbors were going to call the police on me as I chased a screaming naked child from room to room — Good times.” (Minq)
4. Make Them Bleed
We can all attest to having some creepy experiences while babysitting, but this one certainly takes the cake.
“A family I had never met found me on a babysitting website and asked me to watch their three kids while they went out to a Christmas party. The kids were 12, 9, and 5. When I got there, they said I would mainly be watching the 5-year-old daughter since the two older boys would just play computer games. The Mom went over the usual babysitting checklist and mentioned that the little girl, V, takes medication at night and showed me where it was. Easy enough. The parents left, and I went with the little girl, V, to her room. She closed the door and turned the lights out and started growling like an animal. Something felt off about her. A few minutes later, she asks me, ‘What color are your boobs?’ What the f–k? She just continued to be weird. Then, out of absolutely NOWHERE, she starts sobbing hysterically saying she wants to kill her parents and ‘make them bleed.’ And that her whole family will be crying saying, ‘Wah Wah, V killed us.’ I went downstairs and looked up the medication… it was an anti-psychotic. The parents never mentioned this to me, either before or after.” (Minq)
3. The Unknown Guest
Horror movies have been making huge amounts of money for years on the idea of paranormal activity — the idea that there are ghosts or demons that haunt homes and make themselves known to small children. It can be a terrifying thought to think that children could be susceptible to something demonic and dangerous. This one babysitter may have been in the presence of something evil when she babysat a young boy.
“I was babysitting a kid, and we were watching TV in his basement. All of a sudden, he shuts the TV off and whips his head to stare at the wall behind him. He stared for a solid 3 minutes and said, ‘Not now,’ and continued watching TV. A few minutes later, he looked at the wall again and said, ‘I’ll see you later ok?!’ I was so freaked out.” (Diply)
2. The Dark Coming Inside
Demons can be terrifying if you happen to be unlucky enough to live in a haunted house. Children are often the victims of paranormal activity because they’re vulnerable to it. When it comes to this story, you can imagine just how scary this situation would be in real life. “A few years ago, I was babysitting a friend’s daughter. They lived in an apartment with a big patio window. She walked up to the glass door leading out to the patio and stared motionless into the night for several minutes. Shortly after, she ran into my arms saying, ‘Scary. Too scary.’ She wouldn’t let me put her down and demanded that I hold her and rock her for the next half an hour. Eventually, she started repeating over and over, ‘The dark coming inside now. The dark coming inside now.’ (Diply)
1. The Watching Man
It’s very much like the movie Conjuring 2, where there’s an old spirit that connects with the youngest child of the home and possesses her at times. It’s a scary movie that illustrates how dangerous evil spirits can be. It’s terrifying to think that something evil could be watching you while you sleep.
“I was babysitting overnight. Both kids sleep walk and talk in their sleep. The oldest was crying in his sleep, got up, and locked himself in the bathroom. It took a while to get him out. I ended up sleeping on the couch. In the middle of the night, I woke up feeling like someone was watching me. He was standing next to the couch. I said, ‘What are you doing?’ His response? ‘The man watches you when you sleep.’ And then he walked back to bed. I didn’t go back to sleep.” (Diply)
