15 Troubling Confessions From NASA Astronauts

Shocking

Space: It’s scary! It’s so vast that it’s almost unimaginable. Think about it for a second. A place where you can see as far as your eyes allow. And, as you do so, you see nothing. It’s simply full of stars and planets. Imagine the fear. The isolation you must feel if you’re up there, floating, by yourself. It can be a scary and daunting experience to be up in space. And astronauts have had their fair share of creepy experiences while up there.

Ever since the 1950s, UFOs have been on the forefront of people’s minds. With the advent of space technology during the same decade, people’s imaginations began to run wild with experiences and visions of UFOs and abductions. However, not everyone who claims to have experienced these phenomena are civilians. In fact, many astronauts have witnessed events that they can’t explain.

You may think that astronauts have a fun job (and, for the most part, they do), but you may not be thinking about the weird things they experience when floating thousands of miles above the Earth’s surface. You may forget about the unknown and the coldness that invades the astronaut suit once you exit the space shuttle and begin floating in the ocean of space.

This list compiles 15 of the most troubling confessions from astronauts. They range from UFO encounters to mysterious lights and even a knocking which shouldn’t even be possible. It’s scary. It’s creepy. It’s even bizarre. And it’s true.

15. Astronauts Heard Music In Their Headphones… In Space

The Apollo 10 mission was extremely important in the history of space exploration. The mission was a practice run for the first mission to the Moon. During this test run, the astronauts were to test out the varying pieces of equipment and technology. This is a dangerous mission to take on, especially since the technology is being tested in a real space environment.

As the mission progressed, the astronauts heard some interesting noises come through their headphones. The best way to describe the noise is “space music”. Specifically, the astronauts recount hearing a weird whistling sound that played throughout all their helmets. While there may be a logical explanation, it’s still unknown as to what the sounds were.

Logical or not, a whistling sound in your helmet is sure to send chills down your spine. Especially when you’re in space.

14. They Saw Glowing Spheres

Many odd things have been seen and heard in space. Though many astronauts don’t want to confess such stories, a handful of astronauts and NASA employees are slowly coming out and claiming they’ve seen and experienced phenomena that can’t be explained. A case in point is the Russian cosmonaut, Vladimir Kovalyonok.

The Major General was in space on May 5th, 1981. On this day, Vladimir saw something he couldn’t explain. It was something that would change his life forever. According to the account by Kovalyonok, he witnessed an object float a small distance from his spacecraft. It floated, and then let out an explosion. A second explosion quickly followed, and then another object appeared. A brilliant flash of white occurred, and then the objects were gone.

The Russian cosmonaut doesn’t know what he saw that day. And it is still unexplained as to what was floating in the realm of space that could glow bright gold and disappear in a flash.

13. They Encountered Snakes In Space

Snakes? In space? Yep. This actually happened. Or, this is what Dr. Story Musgrave claims happened while he was on a voyage in outer space. Musgrave has a multitude of accomplishments in life, so it would be a bit odd if he lied about this. His credibility is outstanding, and his story is equally bizarre as it is fascinating.

Musgrave claims that he saw a space snake. Floating through space. It was eight feet long. In the depths of space, it may not be that far-fetched to think that there’s life out there. Dr. Musgrave says that the more he’s out there, the stranger things he sees and experiences. He believes there’s a lot out there people don’t understand, but that it’s out there nonetheless.

If this confession is true, then space is definitely a strange place.

12. They Heard A Knocking On Their Space Shuttle

Imagine you’re home alone. You live in the middle of nowhere and it’s raining outside. The thunder is rumbling. Suddenly, as you’re watching TV, you hear a knock at your door. The skin on the back of your neck begins to crawl. You apprehensively get up to check out the door. You open it. No one is there. This is a scary situation. Now, imagine if this happened to you in space.

Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei experienced these same circumstances when he was in orbit in 2003. What’s even weirder is the fact that sound doesn’t exist in space (it’s a vacuum). So, what made the noise? Who, or what, was knocking on the space shuttle wall? What was its intentions? The answer may never be known.

11. They Saw Strange Lights

Bizarre lights are a staple of the average UFO encounter. People normally see strange lights, they may hear strange noises or even see alien beings. However, weird lights are almost always a part of the UFO story. Enter American astronaut Leroy Chiao, who now belongs to the millions of people around the globe who have seen strange lights in the sky. Or, in this case, in space.

2005 was a great year for Chiao. He was commander of the International Space Station and it was his time to give strong leadership. While leading his crew, he saw some bizarre lights in space.

According to Leroy, the lights were arranged in the shape of an upside-down check mark. They also flew right by him, making him question what he just saw. Once again, Chiao is another astronaut who has seen strange things and isn’t afraid to say something about it.

10. Neil Armstrong Made A Bizarre Transmission

It’s widely known that Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the Moon. But, this is where the facts end and the conspiracies begin. For instance, some think that Armstrong walked on a movie set that looked like the Moon. With a bevy of conspiracy theories revolving around the Moon landing in 1969, one of the more credible theories centers around Armstrong and what he said when he landed on the moon.

According to NASA, their transmission went silent for about two minutes after Neil landed on the Moon due to technological problems. However, many fellow employees say that they heard what he said. He claims that there were two gigantic UFOs that were hovering over the Moon. He couldn’t believe his eyes.

Armstrong was a credible man, and this theory intrigues all who enjoy the history of space.

9. They Saw A Cigar Shaped UFO

The Soviets are famous for competing against the US in the space race. Both sides were trying to get their people up into space first, and even though the Russians were the first to get people into space, the space exploration for both sides have continued to this day. However, in 1991, a Soviet astronaut named Musa Manarov captured something on camera that would make any country’s astronaut shake in their space suit.

While most people only have stories of UFOs, this astronaut has concrete proof of the existence of strange phenomena. He captured a cigar-shaped UFO in the vastness of space. Distance is hard to judge, but it’s apparent that there’s something strange going on. With this footage, does this make you a believer? Or, do you add it into the “fake” pile? You decide.

8. Gordon Cooper Saw Strange Things

Have you ever heard of Gordon Cooper? He may be an astronaut that slipped through the cracks of popular society, but Cooper is important to the evolution of space and space exploration. He flew both the Mercury 9 and the Gemini 5. Before all of that, though, he was in the Air Force. And that is where he had his first sighting. He didn’t just witness one, either. He witnessed a “fleet” of UFOs. If that’s not enough, he would have another strange sighting roughly ten years later.

In 1963, Cooper saw an object that rushed toward him. And there’s evidence to back this up, as the object was picked up on radar. It seems he couldn’t escape seeing bizarre things. Cooper had an amazing space career and his sightings are still a hot topic of debate.

7. Scott Kelly Saw A UFO

Scott Kelly is an interesting man. For one thing, he’s spent the more time on the International Space Station than any other person in history. That’s pretty special. However, Kelly is also unique in that he’s experienced some odd things up in space. Scott hasn’t completely come out and claimed he saw aliens, but he has dropped some subtle hints that makes you scratch your head.

For instance, Kelly was interviewed about his time in space. During the interview, he makes a joke about “aliens having it easier in space than we do”. It could be an offhand comment, but it could also be a clue as to the existence of beings outside of Earth. Scott’s interview makes you question what, if anything, is floating in the ocean of space.

6. There Are Animal Corpses In Space

It’s a great feat for man to have made it into space. It’s an act many generations of humans could barely imagine, let alone actually see happen. However, humans are a resilient species – though man isn’t the only species to have gone into space. Before man was launched into space, animals were used as testing fodder for space exploration.

A monkey was the first animal to be launched into space. And a dog was the first animal that was thrust into orbit. But, there have been many failures in lieu of the few successes of launching animals into space. So, what happens to the animal’s corpse if it dies or gets lost in space? The short answer is that they float away. And they can be seen by astronauts when they go up into space.

5. Donald Slayton Experienced A UFO

Donald Slayton was a Mercury astronaut. He accomplished a great list of things in his life, and he’s got a pretty creepy story about a UFO encounter he had in 1951. Although Slayton wasn’t in space, he still flabbergasted by what he claimed he saw.

Donald was testing a P-51 fighter. He took off and was flying at around 10,000 feet when he noticed something strange in the distance. The object turned out to be something that Slayton couldn’t quite put his finger on. He claimed the object did look like a weather balloon, but moved as if it was an object with acceleration and speed. He says that, as he trailed it, it pulled a 45 degree turn and sped away.

Slayton isn’t sure what he saw in Minneapolis that day, but he does know that it’s impossible to fully explain.

4. They Recorded UFOs

To record a UFO is a big deal. It shows that you’re telling the truth about what you saw. You don’t have to trump up your story or beg people to believe you. However, Joseph Walker is in a bit of a bind. It’s May of 1962 and Walker comes out and says that his job was to spot UFOs. That’s right, he was getting paid to detect UFOs in the sky. What’s even crazier about this story? Joseph actually claimed to have recorded two instances of UFOs flying in the sky.

However, these recordings have never been seen by the public. In fact, Walker is pretty quiet on the subject. He is purported as saying that he doesn’t want to talk about it. What did he see that spooked him so much?

3. They Saw A UFO With A Mechanical Arm

When you think of UFOs, some of the things that probably spring to mind are metallic disks that hover or fly through the air. While this is the typical UFO that is imagined by most, two astronauts claimed to have seen a UFO that looked vastly different from the circular and cigar shaped disks that many claim to see.

Astronauts James McDivitt and Ed White both witnessed something they couldn’t explain. According to the pair of astronauts, they were flying over Hawaii when they saw something they couldn’t comprehend. They saw a metallic object. But, it wasn’t anything that came from Earth. Rather, this object had long arms protruding from it. This is a disturbing image to think about, especially when you pair the image of abductions and UFOs together. Maybe the arms were used for good. Or, maybe they were used for malicious purposes.

2. They Used Code Words To Describe Alien Encounters

It’s one thing to not believe what you think you’ve seen. After all, thousands of people believe that they may have seen something out of this world but don’t ever tell anyone. It’s quite another to be able to say you’ve seen things and talked to people whom you trust about these strange occurrences. Maurice Chatelain (former chief of NASA Communication Systems) did just that when he began to talk about the weird things he had heard about from his colleagues who were up in space.

Chatelain believed that astronauts would communicate about aliens through their radio transmissions. Specifically, he thought that the phrase “Santa Claus” was a term used to describe aliens. He stated that many astronauts had seen these flying saucers and that they used this code word to secretly explain what they were seeing.

1. Alan Bean Saw Something Shiny On the Moon

For decades, there have been theories about space travel. Did people really go into space? If so, then why did Alan Bean see something shiny on the Moon? This is a question that doesn’t have a great answer. In an interview, Bean claimed that he saw something that looked like “shoe leather” on the Moon. This is quite an odd account, as a proponent of conspiracy theories suggests that shiny things shouldn’t be existent on the Moon. So, what did Alan Bean see?

Instead, he claims space should be completely black and infinite. Maybe there is a reason as to why a shiny object looked as it was on the Moon. Could it be glass domes, as conspiracy theorists suggest? Only more exploration and time will give people a satisfactory answer.
