In our modern world, there are few things that are more valuable than fame itself. Being well-known affords a person opportunities far greater than those given to the anonymous. There are many avenues to gain financially, and it seems like lots of people will bend over backward to please them. Looking from afar it seems like one hell of an awesome way to go through life. That is why we see lots of people who’ve made a name for themselves doing everything possible to hold onto their fifteen minutes with everything they possibly can. After all, if you look at the phenomenon of B-list celebrities appearing on a glut of reality TV shows, it seems like evidence of their desire to hang on and make a buck.
One of the major things that a lot of celebrities have attempted to do in order to hold onto their place in the spotlight is to try to look as much like they did at the beginning of their careers. Ironically, it is that desire that has resulted in a lot of celebrities looking nothing like they used to, because of their use of plastic surgery, which can go very wrong. Thinking of the famous folk whose looks have changed so much that we may not be able to pick them out of a lineup inspired us to put together this list.
In order to for someone to be considered for inclusion on this list, they first of all need to be a star in any industry that makes someone famous. Whether they are a musician, singer, actor, politician, journalist, reality television star, artist, model, athlete, wrestler, or any number of other things that can make someone a star, it doesn’t matter. The important thing is that they need to be someone of note. Then, of course, they need to have undergone a massive change in appearance. Keep in mind, though, we won’t be including people like Jocelyn Wildenstein, who is a minor celebrity because of the way her face has changed. We’ve also excluded anyone who has just gone from being a child star to an adult, or anyone who is simply aging with grace, as puberty doesn’t count for a list like this, nor does entering the twilight of life.
15. John Travolta
An actor who has gone through many phases in his career, John Travolta has a long line of noteworthy roles under his belt. Between movies like Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Urban Cowboy, Look Who’s Talking, Pulp Fiction, Get Shorty, Face/Off and Primary Colors, John has ensured that he will never be forgotten. On the other hand, through a series of operations and procedures he has recently made sure that whenever we look at him something just seems weird and off. There is much talk about his hair, or lack of, and the possible use of a wig or plugs. As you can see in this picture, the peak of his hairline looks much different than when he was younger.
14. Carrot Top
We can’t think of a single other celebrity who has been as successful as the man known as Carrot Top has been, yet they have still managed to be treated with disdain for most of their careers. A prop comic who is known for his massive trunk that houses a seemingly never-ending array of items he has designed to elicit laughs from his audience; he has taken that concept and made a career out of it. Even able to become a film star ever so briefly with his starring role in Chairman of the Board, he has since spent more than a decade headlining in Las Vegas. Also well known for his distinctive red hair, that seems to be the only consistent part of his appearance considering he has become overly muscled and his face has been hugely changed by plastic surgery.
13. Lark Voorhies
One of six teens who became stars overnight due to the massive popularity of the nineties teen comedy Saved by the Bell, Lark Voorhies must have had a lot of pressure on her. Known for playing the fashion obsessed Lisa Turtle, her look was one of the major facets of her character throughout her years on her most famous series. Also a star of shows like The Bold and the Beautiful and In the House, there was a while there where it looked like she had beat the odds and was a well-adjusted former child star (again, it looked like). Then photos of her completely different face hit the internet in 2014 and that became a lot more questionable.
12. Lara Flynn Boyle
An actress that always seemed to be a few steps away from becoming a massive star, Lara Flynn Boyle remained in the spotlight through a series of well-received projects. Between television appearances on Twin Peaks and The Practice and in movies like Mobsters, Wayne’s World, The Temp, Happiness and Men in Black II, she was a mainstay of entertainment at one time. Furthermore kept in the spotlight by her high profile relationships with people like Kyle MacLachlan, David Spade and Jack Nicholson, these partnerships were the first reason she ended up in the tabloids. However, since then she married a non-celebrity but remains a mainstay of the rags due to her ever-changing appearance.
11. Renee Zellweger
It may feel like a long time ago now but there was a time not that far back that Renee Zellweger was among the most sought-after and respected actors of her generation. A winner of many awards including an Oscar, BAFTA, three Golden Globes, and too many others to list here, her performances were must-watch for any true cinephiles. Turned into a star after a charming role in Jerry Maguire, she went on to star in movies like the Bridget Jones series, Chicago, Down with Love, Cold Mountain, Cinderella Man and many more. Then she was absent from the acting world after her 2010 role in My Own Love Song and prior to 2016’s The Whole Truth and during that time she became a different looking woman. In fact, when she appeared on a red carpet in 2014 her face surprised to such a degree that it seemed like it was being discussed everywhere you went online.
10. Barry Manilow
It is safe to say that Barry Manilow has never exactly been the coolest looking person, considering he looked like the type of guy who would be picked on in gym class from the beginning of his career. Fortunately for him, his talents were overwhelming to such a degree that he somehow managed to have five separate albums on the best-seller charts simultaneously in 1978. That doesn’t even seem like it should be possible, does it? Want more proof that he has a career for the ages? How about the fact that he has sold more than eighty million records during his awe-inspiring career which makes him one of the best-selling artists of all-time, is that good enough evidence for you? Despite his many accomplishments, it seems as though he wasn’t able to overcome a lack of confidence in his face which is why many plastic surgeries have hugely changed his face.
9. Goldie Hawn
One of the most uniquely charismatic stars in Hollywood’s history, Goldie Hawn was adept at nearly every role she was given. First made famous for her role in Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In while in her early twenties, it seemed unlikely that the allure of film stardom wouldn’t entice her away from the small screen. An Academy Award winning actress for Cactus Flower, her roles in Shampoo, Private Benjamin, Overboard, Bird on a Wire, Death Becomes Her, and The First Wives Club are among her most popular films. Having last appeared in a film all the way back in 2002’s The Banger Sisters and during that time her face has transformed.
8. Meg Ryan
At one time, arguably the only other actress that could have possibly challenged Meg Ryan’s claim to being America’s Sweetheart was Julia Roberts. If that isn’t a testament to the popularity of an actor then we can’t think of what would be. Known for roles in Top Gun, Innerspace, When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail, and many more financially huge movies, it seemed like her star would never dip. Then a sex scandal on the set of Proof of Life with her co-star Russell Crowe came to light and her career took a massive hit, which was only worsened by the fact that plastic surgery seemed to ravage her once natural and cute features.
7. Melanie Griffith
The child of a pair of actors herself, Tippi Hedren and Peter Griffith, Melanie seemed predestined to join the acting world. First rising to the top of her field after her performance in Body Double, she’d go on to cement her place after appearing in several popular films. Unforgettable in Something Wild, Working Girl, Buffalo Girls, RKO 281, Pacific Heights, Milk Money, Mulholland Falls and many others, she began to act a lot less often in the 2000s. It probably isn’t a coincidence that it is also that decade in which her face became and less and less like the one audiences had previously fallen in love with. Hopefully her lovely daughter Dakota Johnson, won’t make the same awful plastic surgery decisions.
6. Courteney Cox
First coming to our attention as the girl who danced alongside Bruce Springsteen in the video for “Dancing in the Dark”, when she was cast as Monica in the show Friends her life changed forever. A show that was so immensely popular that it was mind blowing, it took its six stars, Courteney included, and turned them into international superstars. Arguably only overshadowed by Jennifer Aniston in the years since that series came to an end, she was one of the main stars of the Scream franchise and starred in the long-running sitcom, Cougar Town. However, if the fans who’d loved her on Friends had remained unaware of her work then tuned into an episode of Cougar Town they would have been in for a shock. Having clearly gone under the knife time and time again in the past, her natural looks have been replaced by a face that is hard to recognize.
5. Lil’ Kim
Over the years there have been a depressingly small amount of women who’ve managed to make themselves into stars within the rap game. One of the people who’ve inarguably managed that feat has to be Lil’ Kim, who got her career going after impressing The Notorious B.I.G. Able to make a success out of her first debut album, “Hard Core”, which came out in 1996, she saw three consecutive singles reach the top of the rap charts. Additionally unforgettable for her contributions to the massively popular song “Lady Marmalade”, she appeared in the video for it wearing lingerie which was consistent with a career that was partially built on her image. That is why it is so odd to see her now that she looks so little like the woman we once knew and had her face plastered all over magazine covers and MTV.
4. Sylvester Stallone
When it comes to the transformation Sylvester Stallone has undergone, it has to be one of the most confusing alterations of anyone on this list. A massive action star who has spent his career taking on bad guys in grisly fight sequences, you’d think he’d wear the lines on his face with pride. Especially when you consider that there is probably no other genre of film, in which muscles far outweigh the importance of an attractive face.
Best known for movies like the Rocky and Rambo franchises as well as Cliffhanger, Demolition Man, Cop Land, Antz, Driven, and many more, Sly had years of affection to draw upon to bring crowds to the theaters. Yet, despite the millions of folks who loved his work and films, aging making perfect sense for the type of roles he takes on, and his face never being that key in his success, the man couldn’t age gracefully. All we can say to that is why Sly, why?
3. Daryl Hannah
When Daryl Hannah first made it big as an actress she looked like she could be walking catwalks or appearing in a bevy of professional photo shoots had her interests not made her an actor instead. Between movies like Blade Runner, Splash, Roxanne, Wall Street, Steel Magnolias, Crazy People, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, and Grumpy Old Men, audiences came to know a natural beauty.
Then slowly but surely her face began to undergo a noticeable change and even in movies like the Kill Bill series it started to become obvious that she was undergoing procedures to her face. Changing more dramatically since even those days, her face these days looks virtually nothing like the one we were introduced all those years ago. Considering the way Hollywood treats aging actresses we can’t blame her for trying to remain young looking but we wish she stopped before she went past the line of no return.
2. Dolly Parton
There have been a lot of celebrities who’ve come and gone through the revolving door that is the public’s focus over the years but very few have had the staying power of Dolly Parton. Popular enough throughout her life that she was able to take the name she’d built and create a popular and successful theme park called Dollywood, it has been open ever since 1961. Also able to release forty-one different records that were among the top ten country albums over her lengthy career, she’s had a 110 singles chart over a 40 year career.
Starting out as a woman with a beautiful face that looked like it would be entirely at home on any farmland, she has had her face completely altered through multiple plastic surgeries. In fact, had she not remained famous and we saw her in the streets we’d have no idea we were looking at a celebrity until she spoke and we heard that familiar southern twang.
1. Mickey Rourke
For anyone who has been able to watch the career of Mickey Rourke unfold it has been a fascinating tale. At one time one of Hollywood’s heartthrobs on the rise, he was given pivotal roles in movies like Diner, 9 ½ Weeks, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Year of the Dragon, Rumble Fish, Barfly and Angel Heart. Then his acting career hit the skids to a degree and he took a career path unlike any we’d seen a former film star take prior to that by becoming a boxer. A move that meant that he got punched in the face repeatedly for a living, had he joined the sport earlier in life and honed his skills a little bit more it may not have taken such a large toll on him.
Telling The Daily Mail in 2009 that he had gone to “the wrong guy” for plastic surgery on his face in light of his many injuries, the result is that his face looks nothing like the one we’d known for years prior. Interestingly enough, though, the resulting change in his look and the weathered appearance it gave him resulted in him being the perfect person to embody roles that rejuvenated his career. Between Marv from the Sin City films and Randy “The Ram” Robinson from The Wrestler, Mickey became relevant in the mid to late 2000s in a manner he hadn’t enjoyed in years.
