If there is one thing certain about life, it is that it does not last forever. We wish that it did but just like taxes, some things are certain. All of us are going to die someday, and the most we can hope for is to live a long full life, and have a death that is not too painful and that has some dignity. Some of us get that wish, and live the life that we dreamed of, and pass on to the next world in a manner that all of us would hope for, but others do not have that dignity that they wished for in the their last moments.
And when I say “dignity” what I mean by that is that we don’t want to die in a bathroom. Sadly, the celebrities and famous people on this list did not have that opportunity. All of them passed away in a bathroom. Some of them died while doing something totally innocent after having a long and peaceful life, some of them died because of drugs and others meant their ends in very undignified ways, but all of them died in the one possible room you would choose to not die in. Obviously, you are probably going to hope to die in your comfortable bed surrounded by loved ones, not on a cold bathroom floor with your head next to the toilet. But maybe that is just me. So let’s check it out shall we? Here are 15 famous people that died in a bathroom.
15. Bobbi Kristina Brown
Bobbi Kristina Brown was famous for being the daughter of Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston, who were both incredibly well known for being super talented and also being huge train wrecks. Sadly, her mother Whitney Houston also passed away in a bathroom, as you will read about later in this list. In January of 2015, Bobbi Kristina was found face down in her bathtub, unconscious. She was taken to the hospital and placed in a medically induced coma by doctors, and eventually died in July of that same year. Autopsy records later showed that alcohol and prescription meds were to blame. This case was truly sad, and also pretty mind blowing, considering what had already happened with her mother Whitney Houston.
14. Eddie Guerrero
Eddie Guerrero is no stranger to anyone who is a fan of professional wrestling, He wrestled in numerous leagues, including the ECW, the WCW, and the WWF. Although Eddie was known as a villain throughout his career, he was one that tended to be very popular with his fans. His catchphrase was “I lie. I Cheat. I Steal.” and he even wrote a book that was called Cheating Death, Stealing Life. This turned out to be a pretty ironic title, as Eddie ended up not cheating death for very long. He died in a hotel bathroom while brushing his teeth because of heart failure. Rumors are that this was a result of years of steroid use on his part. His death was a very sad end to a really spectacular career, that we had hoped still had a long time to go.
13. Domino Harvey
Domino Harvey was originally from Britain, but her claim to fame was being a bounty hunter. She was not only from a bit of a rich background, but she was also a chick, of course, as well as being pretty hot- this got her a bit of attention. She was at one point a model and she claimed to have been represented by the Ford Modeling Agency, although that was not verified. There was a movie called Domino that was based on her life (seen in the picture above is Keira Knightley, who played Domino). Sadly, she struggled with addiction problems and was in and out of rehab numerous times; at one point she was arrested for dealing meth, although Domino said that she had been set up. She finally died from an overdose of fentanyl in June of 2005. She was found unconscious in a bath tub.
12. Robert Pastorelli
If you were alive during a certain time then you remember the show Murphy Brown, in which Robert Pastorelli had a regular role. He also appeared in numerous other TV shows and movies over the years. He had a dark side though; at one point his girlfriend supposedly killed herself in front of him by shooting herself in the head. Later the death was considered a homicide and Pastorelli was going to be taken in for more questioning. According to this story, “In the intervening years, detectives apparently obtained evidence discrediting Pastorelli’s story and were ready to arrest the actor.” In 2004, before that could happen, he died in the bathroom of his Hollywood home because of an overdose of morphine.
11. Elvis Presley
All of us know the story of Elvis Presley. He went from being arguably the single coolest person in the entire world, and one of the most popular singers ever, to being a fat and bloated Vegas performer that was addicted to a variety of drugs. In fact, he had been hospitalized twice shortly before he died for overdosing on barbiturates. If you were in a pool at one point to guess the person “most likely to die in a bathroom” Elvis would have been that person that would be the smartest to pick. He was found unresponsive on his bathroom floor. The official reason was a heart attack, but it was obvious that what really killed him was his lifestyle. Although he had gone downhill, his death still saddened millions of people worldwide.
10. Orville Redenbacher
Orville Redenbacher was the son of a farmer who started out selling popcorn from the back of his car. Before long his popcorn was some of the best selling and most well-known in the world, and Redenbacher was its spokesman. He always appeared on TV in horn-rimmed glasses and a bow-tie. He soon became famous and was on numerous talk shows, as a lot of people thought he was an actor, and not a real person. Back in the day everybody knew who he was. Apparently in the 80s you didn’t have to be all that impressive in order to become a star if you were in TV commercials. These were the days when there were not too many options for what was on the tube. Redenbacher suffered a heart attack while he was in his bathtub and drowned in 1995.
9. Richard Manuel
Richard Manuel was a member of The Band, which was one of the most influential bands of its day. But apparently he had some demons. As to his death, “The Band had played the Cheek to Cheek Lounge, a humbling comedown from the heated days when they toured with Bob Dylan and played festivals like the Isle of Wight. Early the next morning, after a night of booze and drugs, he got out of the bed where he lay with his wife, went into the bathroom and hanged himself,” according author Martin Levin. His wife found his body in the morning. Cocaine and alcohol were found in his system. He died in 1986. The Band is still thought of as one the best bands of their time by both fans as well as critics.
8. Nancy Spungen
Nancy Spungen was the girlfriend of Sid Vicious, who was the bass player for the Sex Pistols; they were arguably the most famous punk couple of all time, and the Sex Pistols are possibly the most well-known punk band of all time. Sid and Nancy were both way into drugs, and when things got bad Vicious was known to attack Nancy. She was found dead in the bathroom of the hotel room that she was sharing with Vicious. He was arrested and charged with her murder, but he died of a heroin overdose when he was out on bail, before he could stand trial for her death. There were also another number of theories about what happened to her, ranging from her killing herself, to there being someone else that was in the hotel room with her that actually killed her.
7. Jim Morrison
Jim Morrison was the lead singer of the band The Doors, and a true rock and roll icon. For a certain segment of the population he was one of the biggest musical geniuses of all time. He was also a poet, and a lot of ladies thought he was pretty much the hottest thing ever. Which is why it is kind of a drag that he ended up kicking it in a bathroom. He was found dead in a bathroom in Paris. The official cause of death was heart failure, but there never was any sort of autopsy done. He was only 27-years-old when he died. Because there was no autopsy there was a lot of talk of what may have caused his death, but he was known to use drugs, so that is pretty likely the cause. Much less likely are the conspiracy rumors that Morrison is still alive and hiding out somewhere.
6. Judy Garland
Most of us know Judy Garland from her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, and when I say “most of us” I mean all of us. Is there really anyone out there in the world that has not seen that movie? What a lot of people do not know though, is how troubled she was in her real life. While she had one of the most iconic roles in the history of movies, in her real life she struggled with many issues. She had mental health problems, drug and alcohol issues, and relationship problems. She was married five times. She was only 47- years-old when she was found dead in a bathroom of a home that she rented; the cause of death was an overdose of barbiturates. Truly a sad ending for someone that most of us grew up watching when we were children.
5. Albert Dekker
Some people die in a bathroom, and then other people just die while doing all sorts of things in a bathroom that they would probably just keep to themselves. Dekker was a well-known character actor who was found naked, on his knees in a bathtub, with a noose around his neck and looped up over the shower curtain rod. It gets worse though. He was blindfolded, handcuffed, he had a ball gag in his mouth, and two hypodermic needles in his arm. He also had a whole bunch of dirty words written on his body in red lipstick. If there is one thing that is for sure, Albert Dekker knew how to party. There was a lot of speculation about what might have happened, as there were both money and valuables missing from the home, but the coroner ruled it auto-erotic asphyxiation.
4. Lenny Bruce
Lenny Bruce was one of the most famous, and most controversial, comedians of his time. He was known for being vulgar and pushing the envelope at a time when most comedians were still pretty conservative. He was even charged with obscenity crimes, basically for swearing while he was on stage. He was no stranger to being arrested; he actually had been busted a few years prior for impersonating a priest. Who does that? In 1966 he was found dead in the bathroom of his home- the cause of death was an overdose of morphine. He was only 40-years-old. His epitaph read “Beloved father – devoted son/Peace at last.” His death hit a lot of people hard, as Bruce was someone that a lot of people were huge fans of, purely because he was an icon for the new generation of artists, intellectuals, and liberals at that time.
3. Hideto Matsumo
Hideo Matsumo was a Japanese rock star, who also went by the name “Hide.” He was the lead singer of a Japanese band called X Japan, and was looked at as someone who was an icon for being a nonconformist in Japanese society. In particular, he did so by being “glam.” The American rock band Kiss, and in particular guitarist Ace Frehley, were huge influences. In 1998, after a night out on the town drinking, he was found in a bathroom in Tokyo hanging from a towel. It was ruled a suicide. Sadly three fans then killed themselves in the same way in copycat suicides, and 50,000 fans went to his funeral. Japan certainly has an odd culture and this guy was a good example of that. He was only 33-years-old when he died.
2. Claude Francois
Claude François was a huge pop star in France. He sold around 70 million records during his career. He was considered as big as the Beatles by some people in France. While taking a shower in his home he noticed that one of the light fixtures was crooked. He tried to straighten it out, but was electrocuted. He was just 39-years-old. This is one of those things that you really kind of need to pay attention to, you know? All of those things that they tell you when you are a kid about how it is dangerous to do certain things, like, you know, changing a light bulb when you are in a shower; they tell you these things for a reason. Not to make light of it (see what I did there?) but it really is sad when people die for silly reasons such as this one.
1. Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston was one of the biggest stars of her time. It is estimated that she sold close to 200 million albums over her career. Sadly, she passed away in a very similar way to her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, who is also on this list. In 2012 she was found unconscious and submerged in a tub at the Beverly Hills Hilton hotel. Some of the details of what happened are found in this piece, which says, “The final details of pop icon Whitney Houston’s Feb. 11 death provide a clearer picture of the scene where the star was found face down in a water-filled bathtub with drug paraphernalia near by, and confirms the coroner’s initial report that she died of accidental drowning.” There is no doubt that this was a true tragedy that she passed away, and even more so that it happened in a bathroom.
