15 Embarrassing Confessions Of Celebrity Hallucinations

Lions, and tigers, and bears. Oh my! Have you ever heard that listening to Pink Floyd’s 1973 “Dark Side of The Moon” totally matches up with “The Wizard of Oz” if you time it just right? Or that drinking absinthe will bring you a visit from a green fairy lady with magical powers? Those may be the speculations of someone who twerks with Mary Jane too much or chills on the low with Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (LSD); but to these celebrities, the weird hallucinations on this list were totally real to them at one point. Add a couple of fancy herbs or one special South American plant root to the marvelous machinery of the mind and you’ve got yourself a merry-go-round of visual antics for your personal entertainment for up to several hours.

Hallucinations can be described as delusions, illusions or fantasies. Basically, things that aren’t really there. Especially, things that no else but you can see. Sometimes, the crazy kaleidoscope of imaginary friends or unseen voices can get a little creepy. “Ground Control to Major Tom!” Come back to reality! Other times, there can be life-altering epiphanies that result in things like the iPhone. No two “trips” are alike. The stars on this list have definitely been able to “break on through to the other side”coming back to tell their tales of totally weird hallucinations.

15. Miley Cyrus

Wild child Miley Cyrus is no stranger to mind-bending substances. Take a quick scroll down her Instagram and you’ll see that the singer likes to have a good time. The star, who proudly displays her love of weed in its various forms, discussed a time when she experienced a mild hallucination after smoking a joint laced with the hallucinogen peyote. Miley told Rolling Stone magazine that she began seeing a wolf howling at the moon. Whoa… While we’re pretty sure there was no wolf in near proximity, the imaginations of this former Disney princess are far from anything malicious. Perhaps it was her spirit animal?

Whether she’s frolicking about with her little sister in real time or fantasizing about animals in her neighborhood, Miley Cyrus knows how to have a good time without crossing too far over the edge; hence, the glitter and jewel bedazzlements.

14. Rebel Wilson

This comedic princess encountered a strange vision that altered the course of her entire life when she contracted malaria after visiting Zimbabwe on vacation. Originally from Sydney, Australia, Rebel Wilson almost died from the fever-inducing disease, which then caused her to see things that weren’t there. During her feverish state, she had a prophetic vision of herself in the future, receiving an Academy Award. Instead of giving a traditional acceptance speech, the hilarious actress gave an “acceptance rap.”

As a result of her private hallucination, Rebel Wilson decided to quit her day job and enroll in acting classes. Her friends and family thought the malaria had made her a bit “demented,” as she told The Daily Mail UK, saying that no one would put her in a movie. Since then, she has starred in major blockbusters like Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect and How To Be Single, showcasing her incredible gift for comedy. Today, the only imagining this lady is doing is how to spend all that cash.

13. Robert Downey Jr.

In the 1990s, Robert Downey Jr. made headlines for his bad boy behavior. Often pictured in an orange jumpsuit standing before a befuddled judge, Downey made sure that no major studio would be able to insure him on their next movie. One such occasion involves a bizarre hallucination which included the actor getting arrested one more time. Already on parole for racing his car drunk along Sunset Boulevard, while in possession of a stash of drugs and a .357 magnum revolver, Robert Downey Jr. was pulled over naked in his Porsche making incoherent comments as a result of his paranoid ramblings.

The actor imagined being followed by the cops, which unfortunately, at that point, was true. He was taken into custody and given three months in prison, where he endured frequently threatening behavior from other inmates due to his celebrity status. He’s come a long way since his time behind bars. The Iron Man now earns an estimated $80 million a picture, making him the highest paid actor in Hollywood.

12. Rachel McAdams

According to the Mean Girls star, ingesting weed in whatever form can lead to some unexpected psychic occurrences. Turns out, the stunning Canadian actress was attempting to use marijuana as a sleep aid when her weird hallucination occurred. After a local grocer in Toronto offered her a small pinch of marijuana to help her sleep, the actress reported having a nighttime visitation by some unusual sounds. As the actress shared on Jimmy Kimmel, “I was not thinking normal, human thoughts.” Lying in her bed, unable to sleep, McAdams describes hearing opera for about five hours, a small man singing opera, which is enough to make anybody think that they are going crazy.

After her experience, Rachel McAdams decided that weed was not the best way for her to get some shuteye. Acting alongside Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in Wedding Crashers is a crazy enough experience for this gorgeous beauty, who tends to stay away from any mind-bending combinations.

11. Shia LaBeouf

The former Disney star is no stranger to crazy antics and public run-ins with authority figures. From the brown paper bag on his head at awards shows in 2015 to his currently-running 24/7 anti-Trump installation, Shia LaBeouf encountered another brush with security when he had a bizarre vision during one of his nightly escapades. The Indiana Jones actor envisioned fire coming out of the head of a security guard at Walgreens and made sure to let him know about it. When he decided to share the information, the guard did not seem so impressed; instead, the man decided to call out Shia’s “craziness” in response.

Shia promptly returned to his computer at home where he was live-Tweeting his acid trip with his fans. Among the sensational meanderings explored by Shia: “What’s the difference btw mayonnaise and mayo?” and “Who has my hand I want it back?” In related news, Shia eventually found his hand.

10. Chelsea Handler

Leave it to Chelsea Handler to center one of her Netflix series episodes on the topic of “Drugs.” In this episode, she does, you guessed it, drugs. The former talk show host heads down to South America where the popular psychedelic substance ayahuasca, a “journeying tool,” is being legally used by those seeking some form of spiritual enlightenment. On Stephen Colbert’s Late Night talk show, she discusses the experience in depth. “The first time I took it, it didn’t do anything. I have a very high tolerance.” She goes on, “You purge. They call it ‘a purging.’ You have all these hallucinations about your childhood.”

On her “trip,” Chelsea experienced vivid images of her and her sister laughing on a kayak. She says, “I had forgotten that I love my sister. So I told her, ‘Hey, girl. Love you again!'” Today, many stars seeking a spiritual experience head down to Brazil or Peru, where they can be led by a shaman in a ritualistic ceremony, which may or may not include images of your sister on a kayak.

9. Tom Arnold

During his time as a writer for the hit show Roseanne, Tom took part in some extracurricular activities that left the show’s star (and Tom’s wife) a little more than confused. Yes, Roseanne Barr bared witness to some of Tom Arnold’s most bizarre and shocking behavior during his time “off the wagon.” In the book Moments of Clarity by Christopher Kennedy Lawford, Tom recalls his addiction getting so bad that he imagined spotting hidden cameras situated inside the mirrors of his bathroom medicine cabinet. He elaborated an entirely fictional reality show that was covering him, as the star. Fortunately for Tom and Roseanne, there were no secret cameras following him for the duration of that period. This type of paranoia falls into the category “Delusions of Grandeur” in most psychology journals that describe hallucinations. Today, the only cameras pointed at Tom are the ones he and everyone else can see on hit shows like The Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne or I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!

8. Nicolas Cage

Everybody knows Nicolas Cage is nuts. Add some psychedelic mushrooms to the mix and you’ve got a hilarious combination of human/animal bonding unlike anything else in the galaxy. Apparently, Cage, who is known for his exorbitant spending habits and strange obsessions (See: $276,000 purchased dinosaur skull), had a bag of psychotropic mushrooms chilling in his freezer. One day (how, we do not know), his cat, Lewis found his way into the bag of mushrooms and began eating them on the spot. Immediately, Cage decided it would only be fair to take the mushrooms with his cat, so that the cat was not alone in his journey to “the other side.”

Cut to: Nicolas Cage and his cat Lewis, laying across from each other for several hours, staring at each other intently. Cage reported to David Letterman, “I had no doubt he was my brother.” That explains the family resemblance.

7. Anne Heche

Anne Heche, the cute blonde star of Donnie Brasco and Six Days, Seven Nights, was best known as Ellen DeGeneres’ girlfriend in the 1990s. Then, she went back to dating men and her career went downhill. Just kidding. It was going downhill before that. The day after she broke up with DeGeneres, Heche, who has since shared her struggle with mental illness, decided to head out to Fresno County, where she chalked up one of the strangest celebrity hallucinations on this list. Late that evening, Anne Heche apparently showed up at a stranger’s house in Fresno, where she knocked furiously on a neighbors’ door, making “strange statements” as detailed in the report by the Fresno County deputy. After being let in, she took a shower, put on Mickey Mouse slippers, and attempted to convince the children to board a spaceship with her.

In the report, the officer wrote: “She proceeded to tell me that she was God and was going to take everyone back to heaven with her in some sort of spaceship.” The officer proceeded to take her into custody to receive psychological treatment. Heche has since issued a tell-all book entitled Call Me Crazy, detailing the mind-boggling episode.

6. Steve Jobs

Sometimes hallucinations lead to revolutions. It’s no secret that the Apple co-founder and visionary often partook in the psychedelic excursions prevalent in the 1960s and 70s. After discovering the mind-altering substance, his style of thinking changed in a way that transformed the tech world in a way that challenged his peers. He has been quoted by biographer Water Isaacson, saying, “LSD is one of the two or three most important things I’ve done in my life.” During his many “trips,” Jobs recounts that it “reinforced my sense of what was important – creating things instead of making money, putting things back into the stream of history and of human consciousness as much as I could.”

Steve Jobs attributes much of his success with Apple to dropping acid, due to its revelatory, mind-expanding properties. A companion book he noted of great influence is entitled “Be Here Now,” a popular text described by The New York Times as a “counterculture bible.” Apple’s company slogan “Think Different” describes the way he might have been thinking a lot of the time, not for the same reasons you might expect.

5. Bill Gates

Unlike the titans of industry of prior generations, the tech boom owes itself greatly to the unconventional minds of the 1960s and 1970s. This era of “Free Love” ushered in a generation of dudes and gals who were deciding to “Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out,” a slogan for the psychedelic journeys being taken across California and other states. Surprisingly, one of those one-time “trippers” was none other than billionaire Bill Gates.

During what he describes as his “errant youth,” Bill Gates embarked on an acid trip that ended with him staring at a table for far too long. During the stare down, Gates recalls the fear of the table’s edge plunging into his eye. In an interview with Playboy, Gates describes that vision as being “on the other side of that boundary.” Apparently these types of hallucinatory fears were enough to keep Gates away from experimenting any further with the substance and keep his eyes fixed on computer screens. Good thing he wears glasses.

4. Sting

If you’ve heard stories of Sting having tantric sex with his wife for several hours at a time, then you’ll surely see how the next celebrity hallucination sort of makes sense, considering his patience and ability to focus. According to Courtney Love, who shared this detail in an interview with thefix.com, Grammy-winning artist Sting headed out to Joshua Tree with a guide in an area of the desert just outside of Los Angeles, where he embarked on a shamanic journey using the substance ayahuasca.

While there, amidst the cacti and Mojave yucca plants, Sting chased a bee for an hour straight, imagining some type of special power attributed to this tiny insect. With its twisted, spiky trees that look straight out of a Dr. Seuss novel, Joshua Tree seems like the perfect place to partake in a solo game of tag with a little winged creature. Perhaps Sting was entranced by something that shared his namesake? Get it? Sting???

3. Todd Bridges

This actor/comedian sure gave his Mama a scare when he started nailing furniture to the front door to keep her from coming inside. Todd Bridges, known for his roles on the popular family sitcom Diff’rent Strokes along with guest-starring roles on Monk and Everybody Hates Chris, had a sit-down interview with the Queen of daytime talkshows, Oprah. There, he shared his account of how the whole hallucination thing went down. “I had imaginary friends. A girl named Lisa, who I was hanging with, was having sex with, and then when I woke up finally out of that stupor, I asked the guys, I said, ‘Where’d Lisa go?’ They said, ‘Lisa, who? There’s nobody named Lisa.’ It was all in my head. I imagined everything.”

Bridges appeared on the talkshow with his mother, who shared her side of the story, when she attempted to help her son who was in the throes of his addiction at the time. She recalls showing up to his house wearing all black because she knew he was going to die. Since the unsettling events, Todd has sought help and now lives a sober lifestyle free of imaginary girlfriends.

2. Steve-O

When you’re busy lighting your hair on fire, stapling signs to your nether regions, or getting your own face tattooed to your back, you might not be in a kosher state of mind. You probably wouldn’t pass a field sobriety test (if you’ve watched the show, you can understand why someone would need to be heavily sedated to perform some of those excruciatingly painful stunts), After three seasons and several decades of debauchery, Steve-O recounts his glory days on the MTV hit show Jackass, as a time of intense partying and extremely outlandish behavior.

He told The Huffington Post, that he was hearing voices “telling him he was going to have to answer for the times he had done harm to people.” Steve-O, who is renowned for his unbelievable stunts and wacky antics, earned a party boy reputation along with his co-star, wild man Johnny Knoxville. The pair who partied together also attempted to help each other straighten up, with Knoxville staging his intervention. The now sober comedian also recalled a time when he got so bad that he started imagining people who weren’t there. Today, he makes jokes in front of live audiences, who are 100% physically there.

1. Jack Nicholson

From his crazed eyebrows to his permanently fixed Cheshire Cat smile, Jack Nicholson has earned the title of “Most Likely To Be Spotted Courtside At A Lakers Game” and also, as one of the most infamous partiers in Hollywood history. In fact, a book called Hollywood Hellraisers by Robert Sellers, depicts this subject in great detail, following the likes of Jack Nicholson, Marlon Brando and Warren Beatty, on their tumultuous tales of extravagant bad boy living, which brings us to Jack’s weird hallucination.

During the 1970s, a very popular psychedelic LSD led Nicholson to subject himself to some of the strangest mental fabrications on this list. Drum roll, please. He recalls having castration fantasies, homoerotic fantasies, revelations about not being wanted as an infant, and to top it all off, Nicholson reports seeing the face of God. That’s a pretty full night. We hope he sticks to calmer endeavors like The Shining. Oh, wait…
