The Rap industry is no stranger to beef. Actually some of the greatest rappers ever – Biggie, TuPac – have all lost their lives to silly beefs that could have easily been avoided by people acting like actual grown-ups. But the rap game is fueled by pride and ego, and feuds will never end in Hip-Hop. Here are some of the biggest rap feuds so far in 2014 …
Scooter Braun & Lil Wayne:
This is an interesting one because it involves everyone’s favorite Canadian bad boy, Justin Bieber. We all know that the Biebz has been getting into more and more trouble lately. Well, his manager Scooter Braun apparently made the comment earlier this year that the reason Bieber was acting out was because of bad influences from friends like Lil’ Twist, a young rapper signed to Lil Wayne’s YMCMB label. Apparently Weezy didn’t take kindly to his artist being described as a bad influence and he lashed out via a video message warning Scooter to shut his mouth. Thankfully this one got resolved peacefully with reps from both sides saying that everything had been smoothed out. With this one situation at least, everything is still good in the Bieber empire.
50. Cent & SlowBucks:
Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson has been on a roll this year. He released a new album this year called Animal Ambition, he reconnected with his old rap crew The G-Unit, and he was also the executive producer of a new show on cable called Power that had some great ratings. He also got involved in a rap beef with a certain rap music promoter and clothing designer named SlowBucks. Both gentleman hail from Queens in NYC, and it seems they had some bad blood from back in the day. Everything came to a head at the Hot 97 Radio Concert in NJ earlier this summer. SlowBucks was on the stage while 50 Cent was performing as the headliner. Suddenly, some soldiers from 50’s camp rushed SlowBucks and took his chain. In the world of rap culture, that’s the biggest disrespect ever. The situation hasn’t yet been fully resolved and the latest news is that SlowBucks was taking legal action to get his chain back.
Meek Mill & Wale:
One of the most respected music rap labels in the rap game right now is MMG, which was founded by the “large and in-charge” Hip-Hop boss, Rick Ross. The label holds a wide and varied stable of talent including Meek Mill, Wale, Stalley and more. A few weeks ago, a Twitter beef erupted between Wale (who hails from DC) and Meek Mill (from Philly). Meek Mill is scheduled to drop his sophomore album this year and he claimed that his label mate Wale was being jealous & petty and not supporting him in the album’s promotion process. These comments took the rap game by storm because the MMG label was always deemed to extremely tight – a real band of brothers. This is another one that’s still unresolved because a few weeks later, Meek Mill was incarcerated back in his hometown of Philadelphia for a 6-month stretch for parole violations.
Lil Kim and Nicki Minaj:
Can’t we all just get along? This is a rap feud that seems to be quite senseless and unnecessary, but for some reason it keeps on continuing and persisting. It’s between Nicki Minaj, one of the current queens of Hip-Hop, and Lil’ Kim who reigned in the 90’s but has really diminished in popularity. The basis of the beef is this: Ever since Nicki Minaj stepped on the scene with her colored wings and scantily-clad wardrobe, Kim has been claiming that Nicki jacked her style and entire flavor. A point can be made in favor of that, but the bottom line is that in this current era, Nicki Minaj has been churning out hits and Lil’ Kim is way below the radar. Just recently, Lil’ Kim put out a dis track called “Identity Theft” going at Nicki Minaj yet again, so it doesn’t seem like this one is going to end anytime soon.
Raekwon and The Rza (Both of the Wu-Tang Clan):
As a lover and perennial supporter of purist rap music, this was one of those rap feuds that really pulled on your heart strings. The Wu-Tang Clan is one of the most influential rap groups of all time and 2014 marks the 20 year anniversary of their seminal debut album, Enter the 36 Chambers. This year, the group’s leader Rza was trying to assemble all the original members of the crew for an album to commemorate this major milestone. However what unfolded was a public back and forth between Rza and Raekwon the Chef regarding disagreements about money and musical direction for this album. Some tacky details got revealed about the inner-workings of the crew that the fans just didn’t need to hear. But as of right now, it looks like cooler heads have prevailed, and that 20th Anniversary album (featuring all the Wu members) is set to be released this November.
Tyga and Lil Durk:
Tyga is a West Coast rapper who is signed to Lil Wayne’s YMCMB label and Lil Durk is a new rapper from Chicago who is signed to French Montana’s Coke Boys label. Both are young, successful rappers with important friends in the industry. The two young rappers had a major disagreement early this year. You see Tyga is currently hitched up with a popular former stripper named Blac Chyna. He actually has a child with her and Lil Durk apparently said a sexual line in a song that was derogatory to Blac Chyna – a lyric that made reference to her stripping past. Well Tyga didn’t like it and he recruited veteran West Coast rapper The Game for a dis track against Lil Durk. Of course Lil Durk responded and some other Chicago rappers joined in as well to protect their turf. This one had the potential to get out of hand but T.I. surprisingly stepped in and brokered a truce between both parties. So everything is back to peace and harmony now.
Young Jeezy and Freddie Gibbs:
Similar to the feud between Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim, this is another disagreement between competing rappers from different eras. Both Jeezy and Freddie Gibbs are titans of raw street rap music. The difference is that Atlanta rapper Jeezy has been operating in the spotlight for a little over a decade and Gibbs has been around for the last five years or so. These two were actually affiliated under Jeezy’s CTE rap label but it was short-lived union. Apparently they both just had different way of doing things, and after they parted, the younger Gibbs spoke up in several interviews and even released a dis track against his former mentor. The good thing with this beef is that even with all the bad blood, these two seem like they have a mutual respect for each other. It doesn’t look like this feud is going to escalate into anything gnarly.
T.I. and Floyd Mayweather:
This is one of those rare beefs that actually escalated into a fist brawl. It’s even more incredulous when you consider that this feud involves Floyd Mayweather, the best pound-for-pound professional boxer in the world. But when two guys with big egos are involved and something is said about the significant other of one of the parties, things often escalate really quickly. That’s what happened this past May at a Fat Burger restaurant in Vegas. The rapper T.I. thought that Pretty Boy Floyd was disrespecting his wife Tiny and that didn’t sit well with him at all. So he approached the champ, words were exchanged and a brawl ensued. Luckily no one got seriously hurt even though a small riot broke out around the two celebrities. This beef isn’t officially over – there have still been verbal shots fired by both parties. These are two successful grown men with so much to lose. Let’s hope they come to their senses and stop the nonsense.
