Although many would claim that being a famous celebrity would be the ideal life, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Individuals in the spotlight are under an immense level of pressure that we mere mortals couldn’t even begin to understand. Not only do these stars have to live up to their own expectations, they have to live up to everyone else’s. Along with this, celebrities are often hounded by the media; they often can’t even step outside their front doors without being met by numerous photographers.
So, with this is mind, it’s no surprise that fame often becomes too much for these stars. It gets to a point where they are just so overwhelmed that they crack. Oftentimes these celebrities have underlying mental health issues that are undiagnosed, and as they feel the pressure of fame, their disorders come to the forefront. The stars on this list each dealt with their breakdowns differently; some turned to drugs and alcohol, some had brush-ins with the law, and others behaved in a very odd and worrisome manner. One thing is for sure though, each of the breakdowns on this list are notorious in their own right and they will remain this way for many years to come.
15. Kate Moss
Moss was always known to be quite the party girl; ex-boyfriend Johnny Depp once stated that even he had a hard time keeping up with her excessive drinking and partying. Moss entered rehab for the first time in 1998 and rumours started to circulate that the model was hooked on drugs. However, the model’s lowest moment came in 2005. After being spotted snorting what appeared to be cocaine, Moss lost her contract with H&M; only a day after this news, Moss learned that Chanel would not be renewing her contract. The model faced a third blow when Burberry also let her go. Moss basically admitted the drug claims, and although she didn’t say it outright, she went on to make a public apology. The star said: “I take full responsibility for my actions. I also accept that there are various personal issues that I need to address and have started taking the difficult, yet necessary, steps to resolve them.”
14. David Hasselhoff
Hasselhoff, who has a history of alcohol abuse, reached his lowest point in 2007 when a video was released in which the star could be seen lying on the ground, heavily intoxicated. The person recording the scene was later revealed to be Hasselhoff’s daughter, Taylor-Ann; the video was recorded for the sole purpose of showing Hasselhoff what his behaviour was like when drunk. In the video Taylor-Ann can be heard repeating “Tell me you are going to stop.” Hasselhoff is so drunk in the video he is barely able to sit up; the star’s daughter warns him several times that this is putting his career on the line; she can be heard saying “You need to promise me you’re not going to get alcohol tonight, OK? Cause if you get alcohol tonight you are fired from your show tomorrow.” Hasselhoff later revealed that he was completely aware of the video’s existence and that it had actually been his own idea.
13. Courtney Love
Love had always led a relatively troubled life, but after the death of her husband, Kurt Cobain, in 1994, things took a turn for the worse. It was round this time that Love began pulling a number of attention-grabbing stunts including crashing Madonna’s interview at the VMA’s and attacking a journalist with Quentin Tarrantino’s Oscar. The 2000’s saw Love arrested for breaking and entering, losing $100,000 worth of jewels she hadn’t paid for and storming off stage during a concert, after ranting to a fan who held up a picture of her late husband. In 2009, Love’s daughter, Francis Bean Cobain, filed for a restraining order against her mother. Even in recent years, Love has not been showing any signs of getting her act together.
12. Margot Kidder
The Canadian born actress who found fame starring as Lois Lane in the Superman series, brought herself even further into the spotlight after suffering a nervous breakdown in 1996. The breakdown occurred after a devastatingly unlucky incident. While working on her autobiography, Kidder’s laptop was hit with a virus, forcing it to crash and for the actress to lose three years’ worth of work. After being told by professionals that there was no way to retrieve the lost work, Kidder became manic, disappearing for four days. The actress was eventually discovered by L.A police living in a cardboard box. After receiving medical attention, it was discovered that Kidder was suffering from bipolar disorder and that this was the cause of the manic episode. Kidder has since been able to regain control of her life; the actress attributes her well-being to orthomolecular medication. When speaking about her breakdown, the actress stated: “I guess I came to terms with my demons”.
11. Sinead O’ Connor
The Irish singer who has quite the track record of questionable stunts, took things, perhaps, a step too far during her 1992 performance on SNL. The 90s star had been performing her own rendition of the Bob Marley song “War”, when she took out a picture of then-Pope, John Paul II, at the same moment she sang the word evil; she then proceeded to tear the picture in half, leaving host Joe Pesci and the entire audience stunned. This was not the only odd behaviour from the star, as when speaking about meeting fellow singer Prince, who’s song “Nothing Compares 2 U” she had covered, O’ Connor stated: “”I did meet him a couple of times. We didn’t get on at all. In fact, we had a punch-up.” The star also found herself in the press in 2013, after she wrote an open letter to Miley Cyrus in which she stated: “The message you keep sending is that its somehow cool to be prostituted… it’s so not cool Miley… it’s dangerous. Women are to be valued for so much more than their sexuality. We aren’t merely objects of desire. I would be encouraging you to send healthier messages to your peers… that they and you are worth more than what is currently going on in your career.” This advice was not met well by Cyrus, in the least.
10. Ozzy Osbourne
Osbourne, who had a history of both alcohol and drug abuse, took things to the next level in the early 80s; after being fired from his band Black Sabbath, it is said that Osbourne locked himself in his hotel room for days, consuming large quantities of booze and drugs. The rocker’s future wife Sharon, upon seeing his terrible state, offered to help the star launch a solo career; however, this lead to a number of infamous incidents including Osbourne urinating in an executive’s drink during a meeting; another incident included Osbourne wearing one of Sharon’s dresses and urinating on a cenotaph in Texas, placed there in honour of those that had died at the Alamo. This saw Osbourne banned from the city for ten years. Other crazed behaviour from the star included biting the heads of winged creatures (a bat and a dove, in case you were wondering).
9. Miley Cyrus
Former Disney darling, Miley Cyrus, has been featured in the news lately for all the wrong reasons. The star’s strange behaviour all seemed to begin after Liam Hemsworth cut off their engagement in 2013, and then she cut off all her hair and re-invented herself. Things got very strange after the star’s infamous VMA performance with Robin Thicke; this performance left everyone who witnessed it feeling extremely uncomfortable. If Cyrus’ lack of clothing wasn’t enough, her twerking definitely was. In fact, the whole performance was one big over-the-top sexual innuendo; Cyrus was officially off the rails. These odd and inappropriate performances continued throughout the stars’ Bangerz tour with the star gaining quite the reputation. The star is also known for posting strange pictures of herself on line with captions that rarely make sense. Cyrus is now back with Liam and already calming down.
8. Whitney Houston
Singing legend Whitney Houston, maintained a well-respected image throughout the early days of her career. However, by the late 90s, extreme changes in Houston’s appearance and behaviour led fans to speculate that something was not right with the singer, and that she was on drugs. This odd behaviour continued into the early 2000s, as Houston began to completely lose the run of herself; examples of this include Houston being axed from the Oscars line-up and a strange interview in which the singer declared that she was too wealthy to be on crack. In September 2009, Houston gave a much anticipated interview with Oprah; by this point the singer had divorced husband Bobby Brown, but explained that while with her husband, they would do drugs everyday, and that Brown usually “laced marijuana with cocaine.” From here, stemmed Houston’s comeback that included a new album, tour and live TV performances, all of which were met with mixed reviews. Despite this, many still held fears that Houston was not completely clean. Tragically, these fears proved true, as on February 11th, 2012, Houston’s body was discovered in the bathtub of her suite at The Beverly Hilton Hotel.
7. Mel Gibson
Gibson, who admitted in a 2002 interview that he is a manic depressive has suffered many alcohol-related problems along with legal issues over the years. One such incident occurred in 2006 when the actor was arrested for a DUI; at the time of the incident Gibson exclaimed that “his life was over.” Not only this but Gibson went on to harass the arresting officer, asking if he was a Jew and exclaiming that: “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” Gibson managed to redeem himself during an interview with Diane Sawyer in which he described his actions as a “moment of insanity.” However, it was not till 2010 that Gibson suffered his true breakdown. Gibson’s actions were even more controversial this time when a phone call surfaced between the actor and his ex-partner Oksana Grigorieva, in which Gibson was heard exclaiming a large amount of both violent and racial abuse. After this incident, Gibson was banned from coming in contact with Grigorieva or their daughter.
6. Chris Brown
Brown was a well-respected young artist with a booming career; however, in 2009, all this changed, for the singer assaulted then-girlfriend, Rihanna. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 am on February 8th and by 6:30pm that evening, Brown had turned himself in to police. The singer later released a statement saying: “Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired.” Despite this, Brown’s career suffered tremendously as not only was the star forced to pull out of his Grammy performance but many radio stations refused to play Brown’s music. Brown was sentenced to five years formal probation and also had to attend domestic violence counselling. The singer released a video in July 2009, once again apologizing for the incident and describing it as his “deepest regret.”
5. Lindsey Lohan
Lohan’s demise all began in 2007, when the once squeaky clean child star, embarked on one of the most infamous downward spirals in showbiz history. In 2007 alone, Lohan was charged with two DUI’s, cocaine possession, and entered rehab three times. Lohan managed to remain somewhat quiet until 2010 when, wait for it, she forgot that she had to appear in court. At the time she was partying in Cannes. Then a warrant was issued for Lohan’s arrest and the actress was forced to wear an alcohol monitoring bracelet. Another requirement of her probation, was that Lohan attend alcohol abuse classes. However, the actress must not have seen this as an important detail, as the judge soon learned that Lohan had not been attending these classes; the actress was sentenced to 90 days in jail. However, this ended up being only a two week stay, as Lohan was then moved to rehab due to jail ‘overcrowding’ issues. Lohan continued on this bumpy path all the way up to 2013; by this stage the actress had been arrested seven times, appeared in court eleven times and been sentenced three times.
4. Britney Spears
You would have to be living under a rock to have not heard about Spears‘ very public breakdown; nevertheless, let’s re-cap. Although the breakdown occurred in 2007, it is highly likely it had been building for many years. A life of constant judgement along with no privacy due to ruthless paparazzi eventually led the star to crack. In fact, Spears’ had been giving warning signs from as far back as 2004 when she married her childhood friend Jason Alexander, before annulling the marriage a staggering 55 hours later. The height of the star’s meltdown occurred in 2007. After spending a single night in rehab, Spears checked herself out; the singer then proceeded to visit a hair salon where she shaved her head. After this the star visited a tattoo parlour and had two inkings done. Along with this, Spears also attacked a photographer’s car with an umbrella (we all remember the pictures). Despite all this the singer has since been able to make a tremendous comeback and has managed to get both her career and life back on track.
3. Robert Downey Jr.
Between the years 1996-2001, Downey could only be described as a man completely off the rails. During these years the actor was arrested numerous times for drug possession. Then Downey participated in a number of programs aimed at tackling drug abuse, all of these were unsuccessful. The actor’s lowest point came in 1999 when the troubled star was sentenced to three years at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison; however, Downey was released after only one year. Although the actor gained a number of roles after his release, including a spot on Ally McBeal, he eventually lost all these due to his drug abuse. After finally coming to his senses and realizing that it was time to get clean, Downey once again entered rehab only this time it was successful. Downey had an extremely impressive comeback; the actor went on to star in the Iron Man franchise, making him bigger than ever. Downey is commonly considered Hollywood’s best redemption story.
2. Charlie Sheen
Sheen’s infamous breakdown occurred in 2011, after leaving rehab after his third attempt of the year. Sheen began by making disrespectful comments about Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre, and in response to this, Sheen was banned from entering the show’s set. Sheen, who was the highest paid actor on television at the time, demanded he be given a fifty percent raise. This was not met well at all, Sheen was then fired from the show, with Ashton Kutcher to serve as his replacement. These events sent Sheen even further off the edge and then he suffered a very public breakdown watched by millions. The actor became the butt of many internet jokes, and many concerns were raised about Sheen’s mental health. During one interview he stated that he was a “warlock” who drank “tiger blood.” Sheen also posted several odd videos on YouTube including one of himself smoking cigarettes through his nose.
1. Amanda Bynes
Bynes, despite being a former child-star, was an actress that people believed was completely together. However, all this changed in 2012 when a number of legal and alcohol related issues made the former actress a household name. Bynes had a number of run-ins with the law including a DUI and two hit-and-runs. Bynes was able to solve these hit and runs privately with those involved; unfortunately though, this was just the beginning of the star’s downfall. In 2013, Bynes was in trouble again, this time for throwing a ‘bong’ out the window of her apartment. Bynes was charged with possession of the illegal substance along with tampering with evidence after she claimed that it was a vase she had actually thrown from the window. In 2014, Bynes was placed on temporary psychiatric hold after an odd public outburst on Twitter, in which the star made some shocking accusations. She is currently living a less public life and hoping for a career in fashion.
