Puberty, which is the process of a child’s body maturing into an adult one that is capable of sexual reproduction, usually begins in girls when they’re around ten to eleven years of age. The major landmark of female puberty is menarche, which in simple terms is the onset of menstruation. This process of puberty is then usually considered complete by the time girls reach sixteen to seventeen years of age. However, there are several documented cases of extremely early onsets of puberty and menarche, known as “precocious puberty”.
Precocious puberty may be brought about by a tumor in or an injury to the brain, among others, but whatever the cause of precocious puberty, girls who experience it often otherwise end up leading normal lives. But shockingly, a few of the girls who undergo premature menarche end up conceiving at unbelievably young ages. Undeniably, what makes such cases so scandalous is that obviously, these girls engaged in sexual intercourse for their pregnancies to take place, thus giving rise to the certainty of child abuse having been committed against the minors.
Here are the ten shocking cases of the youngest birth mothers in recorded history:

10. Anna “Anya” / Russia / Age of Motherhood: 8 Years, 7 Months
Not much is known about the case of a certain “Anya” from Russia who gave birth in Rostov-on-Don in April of 2000. At the time of the delivery of her baby, Anya was only eight years and seven months old. Apparently, a thirteen-year-old neighbor had raped Anya and caused her to get pregnant after she had undergone menarche at an extremely young age.
9. Hilda Trujillo / Peru / Age of Motherhood: 8 Years, 7 Months
Hilda Trujillo of Peru was from a poor family that lived in a one-room residence. With her family stayed a 22-year-old cousin, who one day secretly raped the seven-year-old Hilda. Five months later, Hilda’s mother, a servant, noticed that her daughter’s stomach was growing abnormally. That prompted her to take Hilda to a doctor, who revealed that Hilda was pregnant. The cousin who raped Hilda was immediately charged and arrested.
Approximately three months after the doctor’s diagnosis, on December 2, 1957, Hilda, without the aid of any anesthetic, prematurely gave birth to 6 lb healthy baby girl named María del Rosario.
8. Unidentified / Colombia / Age of Motherhood: 8 Years, 5 Months
In 2004, when an unnamed seven-year-old girl in Ciudad Bolívar, Colombia was asked to fetch some medicine for her mother, a 32-year-old man employed at the drug store raped her. Eight months later, policemen apprehended the girl and her mother because the girl’s swollen abdomen was suspected to be concealing drugs. The girl’s mother then had no choice but to admit that her daughter was expecting and that it was an employee from the drug store who had caused the pregnancy. Apparently, the mother and the little girl had been threatened by the employee so that they wouldn’t report the matter, causing the two females to keep the rape to themselves. After the revelation, the girl was then placed under the protection of the Colombian Family Welfare Institute (ICBF) for the duration of her pregnancy.
On October 11, 2004, the girl gave birth at the Meissen Hospital, but the man who had raped her was never prosecuted since the girl’s mother still refused to press charges.
7. Mum-Zi / Nigeria / Age of Motherhood: 8 Years, 4 Months
This one might be the most shocking case of all. In various places in Africa, the practice of keeping harems — polygynous households where females are kept in enclosed quarters forbidden to men — have existed for centuries. A chieftain’s harem occasionally includes little girls, but of course, they don’t usually bear children for the chieftain until they’ve undergone menarche. However, in the case of harem girl Mum-Zi of Calabar, Nigeria, menarche came at an extremely young age, enabling her to deliver a baby for Chief Akkiri in December of 1884 when she was only eight years and four months old. What makes this case even more shocking, however, is that Mum-Zi’s daughter, Zi, likewise gave birth at a very young age, specifically, when she was only eight years and eight months old. That made Mum-Zi, at seventeen years of age when Zi’s baby was delivered, the youngest grandmother of all time.
6. Griseldina Acuña / Colombia / Age of Motherhood: 8 Years, 2 Months
Not a lot was recorded about the case of Griseldina Acuña from Colombia. However, records show that she began menstruating when she was only three years old and that she gave birth to a baby boy weighing 5 lb on September 13, 1936. At that time, Griselda was only eight years and two months old.
5. Unidentified / India / Age of Motherhood: 8 years
Despite romantic love being celebrated often in Indian culture, the practice of arranged marriage still continues in India to this day. Many times, the couples joined in such marriages are very young children, the practice of allowing an infant to be part of such an arrangement not unheard of. There are even cases when, to relieve themselves of the burden of raising their offspring and in order to make some money, parents “sell” their female children to be married off to adult males. This was the case for an unnamed seven-year-old girl in India whose widowed mother, due to poverty, gave her up for an arranged marriage. The identity and particulars of her husband, however, are unknown. What has nevertheless been recorded in medical journals is that when the girl was eight, she and her baby tragically perished during childbirth.
4. Zulma Guadalupe Morales / Mexico / Age of Motherhood: 8 Years
On January 12, 1993, an eight-year-old girl, Zulma Guadalupe Morales, gave birth to a healthy boy at the National Medical Center of the West hospital in Guadalajara, Mexico. The baby weighing 7.04 pounds was delivered by caesarian section after Zulma had carried him for a full nine months. The doctor in charge of the patient, Dr. Ever Rodriguez Arias, reported that the mother and the baby were both in “perfect condition” after the delivery.
Morales was actually impregnated by her uncle who had raped her. It was because of the embarrassing circumstances surrounding Zulma’s pregnancy that her parents had wanted to keep everything a secret. The news agency “Excelsior”, however, released the young mother’s name.
3. H. / India / Age of Motherhood: 6 Years, 7 Months
A girl from India, identified only as “H.” in reports, gave birth via caesarean section on June 7, 1932 at the Victoria Zanana Hospital in Delhi when she was only six years and seven months old. Actually, when H. was brought to hospital, it was because she was complaining of pain in the lower part of her abdomen. Shockingly, it was discovered that H.’s discomfort was due to pregnancy. What made H.’s case quite unusual from others like hers, however, is that by the time she was impregnated, she had never yet menstruated, and her breasts were not yet fully developed. Nevertheless, H’s baby girl, delivered via caesarean section, was born a healthy 4.19 lbs. In fact, the extremely young mother managed to breastfeed her child for nine months.
2. Yelizaveta “Liza” Gryshchenko / Soviet Union / Age of Motherhood: 6 Years
In the 1930’s a five-year-old from the Soviet Union, Yelizaveta “Liza” Gryschchenko, was brought to a hospital because her belly was inexplicably growing. Doctors immediately observed that the girl already had pubic hair and defined breasts. Even more surprising to them, her enlarged belly was confirmed to be the result of pregnancy. Questions asked of Liza revealed that it was her 69-year-old maternal grandfather who had made her pregnant by raping her.
Just days after Liza’s sixth birthday, she gave birth to a 3 kg, 52 cm baby girl. Unfortunately, the baby did not survive the delivery because Liza’s parents had insisted on a natural birth instead of a caesarian section. Not surprisingly, to escape the unwanted attention they were getting, Liza and her parents immigrated to Vladivostok. Ironically, the girl’s grandfather who had raped Liza continued to stay with the family.
1. Lina Medina / Peru / Age of Motherhood: 5 Years, 7 Months
When she was five years old, Lina Medina of Ticrapo, Huancavelica Region, Peru was brought to a hospital by her parents because of her increasing abdominal size. Lina’s parents suspected that their daughter was suffering from a tumor in her stomach, but doctors were instead shocked to discover that the young female was in her seventh month of pregnancy. Expectedly, her parents were shocked, but they later revealed that their daughter had strangely begun menstruating when she was only eight months old and had prominent breasts by the time she was four.
Dr. Gerardo Lozada took Lina to Peru so that other specialists could confirm that she was indeed expecting. That move expectedly attracted a lot of attention. In fact, a North American filmmaking company offered Lina and her family $5,000 for the rights to document the unbelievable story. The offer was rejected.
Meanwhile, at Peru, the original diagnosis of Lina’s advanced pregnancy was upheld, and on May 14, 1939, Lina delivered a healthy baby boy, Gerardo Medina, via caesarian section. Doctors who performed the surgery noted that Lina already had fully mature sexual organs at the time she gave birth to her son. The boy, by the way, was raised to believe that Lina was actually her sister, but at ten years of age, he discovered that Lina was really his mother. Nevertheless, they continued to treat each other like brother and sister.
On the question of who had gotten Lina pregnant, her father, Tiburelo Medina, was actually arrested on suspicion of child sexual abuse. However, he was later released due to lack of evidence. In fact, even Lina herself did not seem to have any idea regarding the circumstances of her impregnation. Nevertheless, she managed to live her life quite normally, completing her schooling and working as a secretary, although Gerardo died at forty due to bone marrow disease.
