As much as we wish this was true, there is no perfect relationship. You find someone you love, try to build a life together, and work hard on bettering that relationship – through the ups and downs.
Finding the perfect “one” is tough. Even when you think you’ve found the one, it doesn’t mean it’ll work once the wedding vows are uttered for all to hear. This is true not only for us regular folk, but for celebrities, too. While it’s very hard to take celebrities at face value when they claim to have found the “one,” what matters is that they believe in that magical word.
Sometimes they’re on to something, as the long-standing relationships in Hollywood would attest. Other times, however, they’re dead wrong. In fact, the honeymoon period of the relationship quickly becomes a nightmare. Whether marred by domestic violence and or drug and alcohol addiction, these celebrity couples were matches made in hell.
Here are the 10 most disastrous couples – ever.
10. Whitney Houston And Bobby Brown
Here’s another power couple. How this marriage lasted from 1992 until 2007 is beyond me. Whitney Houston and New Edition’s Bobby Brown met at the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards. They married in 1992. Their 14-year marriage was a rollercoaster ride to say the least, marked by drug and alcohol addiction. Both stars became fodder for talk shows and comedy shows, especially SNL and MadTV.
Brown was arrested for allegedly hitting Houston in 2003. It wouldn’t be the last time he’d get arrested. The 80s stars was in and out of jail for much of the 2000s.
9. Sean Penn And Madonna
Ridgemont High’s “Spicoli” and 1980’s Material Girl. This relationship should have worked. To no one’s surprise, it didn’t. The two celebrities married in 1985. They were head over heels for each other. They even starred in the terrible Shanghai Surprise and Madonna dedicated True Blue, her third album, to her husband. Not unlike other relationships covered by this list.
Around this time, Penn had some unfortunate run-ins with photographers which cost him a 60-day jail sentence. He only served 33 days. Penn was also accused of striking Madonna. In 2015, Madonna denied the allegations once and for all. It only took two decades…
8. Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola
Tommy Mottola, the former head of Sony Music Entertainment, is considered a legend in the music industry after having signing and guiding the likes of Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Mariah Carey; An all-star team of singers if you will. Carey, now a renowned diva, married the music executive on June, 5, 1993. It wound up being one of the worst decisions of her life. Their four-year relationship was rocky at best. The full details aren’t known, but what we do know is that Mottola was reportedly a controlling figure in her personal life and career. They divorced in 1997.
7. Chris Brown And Rihanna
Who can forget this failed celebrity relationship? Both music stars became friends in 2005. They were constantly seen together, but refused to admit to the tabloids whether they were an item or not. Finally in 2008, they announced they were in fact in a relationship. A year later, the couple made headlines for all the wrong reasons as Rihanna was pictured with several cuts and bruises on her face. Brown was the alleged attacker. Sure they had chemistry – the wrong chemistry perhaps.
The two seem to be on friendly terms these days. In fact, they’ve collaborated on two songs – Nobody’s Business and Birthday Cake (remix).
6. Tommy Lee Jones And Pamela Anderson
Rock star meets model/actress. Rock star then marries said model/actress. We’ve seen this combination before. Rarely does it ever work. After knowing each other for just four days, Tommy Lee wed Pamela Anderson in 1995. The former Baywatch star was in a bikini for the ceremony.
In 1998, Lee, the infamous drummer of Motley Crue, was sentenced to 6 months in prison after he was convicted of spousal battery. Pamela Anderson didn’t take his abuse for long, however, as she divorced him. Once he was out of prison, the couple reunited until they split for good in 2001.
5. Mike Tyson And Robin Givens
Beautiful up-and-comer actress Robin Givens met Mike Tyson in 1987. After dating for a year, they married. The former heavyweight champion of the world was riding a wave of insane popularity. Things got real messy, real fast. Givens stated that things began falling apart after she had a miscarriage in 1988. That’s when the abuse began. Tyson claimed all Givens was interested in was his net worth – estimated at $50 million at the time. Ironically enough, the couple divorced on Valentine’s Day in 1989. Both of their careers went downhill after the divorce. Tyson, who seems to be on the upswing, remains a walking punchline.
4. Tina Turner And Ike Turner
Born Anna Mae Bullock in November 26, 1939 in Tennessee, the star-to-be met Ike Turner when his band was performing in a club in St. Louis. He took the 18-year-old under his wing. The two essentially became a duo, performing in many night clubs until she was discovered by Phil Spector. They married in 1962. The marriage, however, was anything but happy. The 16-year marriage was marked by abuse, fuelled by Ike’s drug and alcohol addiction. Tina filed for divorce in 1978. She married Erwin Bach in 2013. Maybe the second husband will be her Prince Charming.
3. Kim Kardashian And Damon Thomas
Okay so Kim Kardashian gets a bad rap for basically being famous for no reason. While true, you have to give her props for building an impressive career for herself. Before she was famous, Kardashian allegedly suffered domestic violence at the hands of her first husband, Damon Thomas. She was 19 and he was 29 when they eloped. They divorced three years later. According to the divorce papers, filed in 2003, Thomas allegedly punched her in the face, slammed her against walls and essentially bullied her to look “perfect.” It definitely puts her obsession for her vanity into perspective.
2. Amy Winehouse And Blake Fielder
This story is particularly sad. Amy Winehouse was becoming a household name when she died of an apparent overdose in 2011. Winehouse and Blake Fielder were married in 2007. The relationship was turbulent at best. They divorced two years later.
Many people, in fact, blame Winehouse’s death on her ex-husband Fielder as he was the one to introduce her to hard drugs. Fielder has a well-documented dependence on heroin and crack.
“I don’t think I ruined her, no. I think we found each other and certain people need to realise that she did have other addictions before she met me,” he said in an interview. “She wasn’t a happy, well adjusted young woman, you know, and I find it disrespectful to imply I was some Machiavellian puppet master.”
1. Mel Gibson And Oksana Grigorieva
This is perhaps the ugliest relationship of them all. It didn’t last long, but the Mel Gibson Oksana Grigorieva relationship was one marked by domestic abuse, committed by the former. Before separating in 2010, Gibson’s behaviour was displayed for all to see and hear in tapes released by TMZ. The tapes demonstrated Gibson’s drunken stupor and violent behaviour toward his girlfriend, who happened to be the mother of his daughter, Lucia. Thanks to a legal settlement, Gibson gets to see his daughter as he was able to attain joint custody. That’s what a $750,000 settlement will get you.
