With the events of June 12th, 2016 in Orlando, there was a surge in coming out videos and admissions by people all over the world, including celebs on social media. Our list includes musicians, actors and actresses, film directors and screenwriters, as well as public figures in politics, government, and social media like YouTube and Instagram.

It has got to be difficult to struggle with your identity, especially when society does not have a favorable view of it. For those in the LGBTQ community, it can be a matter of life and death in extreme cases. The Orlando shooting at a gay nightclub was the catalyst that many people needed to come out and let themselves be their true selves. While Cara Delevingne has stated in the past that she identified as bisexual, she said at the beginning of August that if people wanted to refer to her as “gay,” then she thinks that’s great. Cara is currently in a same-sex relationship with Annie Clark, and the two of them are now dodging rumors that wedding bells are in the air. It looks as though Cara is identifying more as a lesbian than a bisexual person. And she is totally cool with that. In fact, Cara is definitely one of those celebrities who is not afraid to take chances, make waves, and spark important conversations. She recently quit being a model for good because she did not want to be that kind of public figure for women and girls. Now she spends her time pursuing her acting career and being the cute second half to Annie Clark, who is a musician and instrumentalist.

Ingrid Nilsen is YouTube famous and has been gaining admiring fans for her fashion and beauty videos and tutorials. The cute 26-year-old took to social media at the beginning of the summer and presented her fans with a small link that read “New video. Something I want to show you.” It was one of the most heartfelt and inspiring coming out messages on YouTube thus far. Ingrid spoke before her 4 million subscribers to let them know that she is gay. After she took a deep breath and announced she said that it felt “so good” to say that out loud. Clearly, she had been keeping it a secret for quite some time. For the past six years, Ingrid has been a YouTube commodity, but she said that when she was just 4 years old, she felt a natural attraction to girls. While she tried dating guys as a teen and young adult, she never felt the right connection.

The Wachowski siblings (formerly Larry and Andy) have become world-famous for being a family filmmaking team. They are most well-known for being the producers and screenwriters for The Matrix film series. Their reputation and public image as award-winning producers must have made it difficult for them to come out as trans. Larry was first and completed her sex-reassignment in 2008 to become known as Lana Wachowski. Andy became Lilly Wachowski in 2016 and made her first appearance as an openly trans person at the 27th Annual GLAAD Awards, where she said that she had been struggling with her identity for her entire life. Now that both siblings have come out, they are now known as the Wachowski sisters. Their films have won five reputable awards, and they have received countless nominations. Support for the Wachowskis has been incredible and they have definitely inspired others.

For those of you who aren’t social media savvy, Logan Kenny is an Instagram star who recently came out to his fans that he was gay. After the Orlando shooting on June 12, 2016, a wave of celebrities and common folks took to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and their own homes to come out to their families and friends. Kenny’s admission was a step for people who have become social media famous, as well as becoming another “celeb” who could inspire his followers. He explained that after the shooting, he was so touched that he came out to his mother and she took it very well. The shooting that sparked all of this new conversation will never be forgotten, and has actually been recorded by the United States to be its second-deadliest terror attack since September 11, 2001. Forty-nine people were killed and another fifty-three were injured as a shooter took aim in a gay Orlando nightclub.

The Minister of Llanelli, Nia Griffith revealed that she was a lesbian at the end of February 2016. As other Ministers in Scotland and the Cabinet were coming out of the closet, Nia decided to join in the public awareness, so she joined David Murdell, Hannah Bardell, and several other Scottish politicians. A photo documentary was organized, and nearly 30 political public figures were involved. The result and public response was extremely positive and accepting, and it gave Nia hope that others would follow in her footsteps and not be afraid to proclaim their sexuality. Besides working as a Minister of Llanelli, Nia is also a Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, which can help her extend LGTBQ awareness to even more people. Apparently, Nia has been hiding her sexuality for decades and she has opted to be very quiet about her personal life for years. We can only hope that now she feels liberated.

Being gay and a politician is still a really difficult thing to manage, but the tide is shifting. In fact, in February 2016 there were two politicians who came out unabashedly, one of them being Hannah Bardell. Hannah is a business spokeswoman for the Scottish National Party, joining David Murdell, another Scottish Cabinet member who is openly gay, as well as Nia Griffith, an open lesbian. At first, Hannah chose to open up only to her close friends and family members. Shortly afterwards, Hannah was ready to make her sexuality public. Her main concern was making sure that her sexuality did not become a hurtful label, as she had just been elected to the Scottish government as an MP. As LGBT History Month approached, Hannah found the perfect opportunity to come out. As for LGBT politicians, Scotland is in the lead, making it clear that it may be a very progressive country.

The month of August 2016 was a huge month for LGTBQ awareness, as a great number of famous people came out as gay, lesbian, trans, and bisexual. Over in the United Kingdom, David Mundell, the Secretary of State for Scotland, became one of those famous people who came out. He revealed that he was gay, which made him the first openly gay Conservative in the Scottish Cabinet. He is 53 years old and explained that his coming out was one of the most important decisions of his entire life. He has three children and has divorced his wife. For David, his sexuality was something that could no longer be ignored, and he wanted to start 2017 with his true identity and he has thankfully received a lot of support and praise. In fact, one of David’s sons, Oliver, applauded his father on Twitter and expressed this his feelings for him had not changed.

Actor Charlie Carver is best known for his sexy role on the MTV series Teen Wolf. At the start of 2016, it seemed that Charlie was looking to turn over a new leaf and embrace the new year with honesty. On January 11, 2016, Charlie wrote on Instagram that he was gay, letting some 700,000 followers in on it at the same time. He wrote a short Insta-essay and explained that he had known about his sexuality for years, but he was determined to keep his personal struggles separate from his professional life. Not anymore though. Now he wants to be a source of hope for others in the LGBTQ community, and his admission will not hurt his acting career. In fact, he has starred in gay scenes in the past including one on his show Teen Wolf. The show was a huge success, making it clear that his career will have no shortage of fantastic moments in the future.

This eclectic actor actually helped Olly Murs to identify himself as 20% gay. As for Sasha Baron Cohen, he spoke out in February 2016 and said that he is 23% gay. How precise! Sasha is known for portraying very zany characters, and one of them is Bruno, an Austrian flamboyant gay man. Sasha spoke about portraying Bruno and said that it’s a deep issue for our modern times. People are afraid of homosexuality, and because of that, they tend to be violent towards gays. As for Sasha, he is married to Isla Fisher, although there are certain situations in which he feels gay tendencies. For instance, when he was filming for Borat, there was a scene when he was very close to a man’s balls and that made him feel very gay in the moment. The actor explained that his gayness can also fluctuate between 17 and 31%, but did not clarify what action would constitute being 31% gay.

When professional fighter Manny Pacquiao released a video in which he ranted and slurred against gays, Mickey Rourke had a few things to say about it. He was really offended by the video and used it as the opportunity to explain his open up about his own sexuality. Former boxer Mickey stated that he found the video particularly hurtful because he identifies as a “little gay.” He also explained that he is a supporter of LGBTQ rights and he has quite a few gay friends, whom he fully supports. There are definitely moments when Mickey feels a bit gay, and he is not afraid of those feelings. When he came out about this in February 2016, he had an onslaught of fans supporting and cheering for him. Mickey even posed with a male fan and gave him a shy kiss. Manny later apologized for his video, but upheld his stance that he is anti-LGTBQ.

Now this is an interesting admission from singer Olly Murs. He stated that he is 20% gay, particularly because he has a very “camp” side to his personality. Olly went on to say that everyone has a bit of campiness to them, meaning that all guys can tend to be a bit flamboyant when it suits them. Olly also stated that he has a lot of gay friends and he tends to get on with them very well. He didn’t say that he has ever experimented with his gay friends, but who knows? Olly was previously dating Francesca Thomas, but they broke up a year ago. Since then, Olly has been single and seriously ready to mingle, and we are sure that there are a lot of gay men out there who would love to date the British singer, even if he is only “20% gay.” While he has been spending his bachelor lifestyle working on new music.

Outspoken co-host of The View Sharon Osbourne came out as bisexual in late August 2016. Her identity reveal was a tad bittersweet as she expressed deep regret for not embracing her bisexuality when she was younger. Apparently she knew for a long time that she was attracted to both men and women, although she is most well-known for being the wife of rocker Ozzy Osbourne. When Sharon made her admission, she said that she that since she was 63 years old, she was now “too old” to get into a relationship with a woman. We’re sure that there would be a woman out there who would love to get into a relationship with Sharon, to be honest. While talking about her own sexuality, Sharon laid bare some information about other celebs, such as Simon Cowell, who according to Sharon definitely acts gay and has a “gayish air about him.”

This is an especially controversial coming out because Trey Pearson is widely known in Christian circles. Trey’s music plays on every Christian radio station, and he has toured all around the world and released best-selling and chart-topping albums in his respected genre. For years, he has been one of the most pivotal Christian rock artists, and at 35 years of age, he finally came out to his fans in a very heartfelt open letter. His admission that he is gay was such a huge deal that a magazine decided to do a 12-page spread of his personal story. Trey wrote that he never wanted to be gay, and he even got married to a woman when he was 27 years old. The couple had two kids, but Trey always felt like he wasn’t living his true life. While Trey came out as gay, he did not relinquish his faith and continues to be a devout Christian.

He was a star on Made in Chelsea, and this past July he broke up with his girlfriend. Afterwards, he came out and identified as gay. This is an interesting case because a few years ago, Ollie said that he identified as bisexual. But now, he says he is fully gay and is only looking to start a romantic relationship with a man. For the summer reveal of a new show, E4, Ollie was ready to explain a bit more about himself to the world. He said that he had been openly gay to the public for a few years, but this is the first time that he is publicly stating that he is indeed a gay man. Being with several girlfriends has made him realize that he not interested in females in a romantic way.

The beautiful Bella Thorne, who had just broken up with her long-term boyfriend has come out as bisexual. She received so much support on Twitter and Instagram for coming out so simply and unabashedly. Ironically, Bella is now dating her brother’s ex-girlfriend, Bella Pendergast, who is 20 years old. Hopefully, that doesn’t make things between brother and sister weird. The girls had been friends for years, but now things are romantic.
