The entertainment industry is extremely finicky when it comes to its stars and the roles they portray. Celebrities have to worry about picking a role that will be too memorable to fans, since it can lead to being typecast in future roles. It can also cause audiences to only remember them for a specific character, rather than their entire body of work. However, actors are always looking for that breakout role that will help them to achieve superstar status in Hollywood.
Maintaining a fan base is hugely important because it’s crucial for celebrities to be instantly recognizable to audiences. Hollywood is filled with skilled actors that have acted in a number of television and film roles, and yet still haven’t been able to make a real name for themselves in the industry. Oftentimes, these actors don’t tend to continue to get steady work, and then slowly disappear into the forgotten Hollywood limelight cemetery.
While it’s important to continue to evolve as an actor, it’s just as important to maintain the appearance that helped to gain one’s fame in the first place. Hitting a peak in an actor’s career can be detrimental to achieving coveted roles, and can alienate their fan base. Melissa McCarthy recently made headlines for her dramatic weight loss, but some wondered if the change in appearance would alienate those who have come to know her at her previous weight.
The same can be said for celebrities that were a much smaller size during the peak of their career. Check out our list for 15 celebrities that have fattened up since peaking in Hollywood, and see if it changes your perception of them because of their heavier weight.
15. Hilary Duff
Starting off as a Disney kid on the hit show, Lizzie McGuire, Hilary Duff is an actress and singer that was able to branch off into film. She had a string of hit movies between 2003 and 2007, and a singing career that reached Platinum status. She has continued her career in film and music, but she also started a family. She definitely isn’t at the same size from her Lizzie McGuire days, but that is to be expected with age and children. Unlike other Hollywood women that make it look super easy to bounce back after childbirth, Duff had a more realistic body type after her first child and hasn’t looked back since.
14. Christina Aguilera
Starting her career as an up-and-coming pop artist with a body like a “Genie In A Bottle,” it’s been a long time since Christina’s 1999 breakout hit. Often flaunting her body in lingerie-clad videos like in “Lady Marmalade,” she was known for her ultra thin frame and over-the-top hair choices. However, since peaking in the music world, she hasn’t been able to maintain her small figure. Nowadays, her music career has taken a backseat to her role as a television personality on The Voice, and her weight fluctuates greatly with each new season. While she’s slimmed down from her heaviest weight, she still hasn’t been able to reach that same “Dirrty” size from her peak years.
13. Kelly Clarkson
During the finale special for American Idol, Kelly Clarkson returned to the stage to perform. However, audiences were a bit blown away from her dramatic weight gain. While she was pregnant at the time, even before her first pregnancy Clarkson had difficulty maintaining her small frame from the first season of American Idol. Since peaking as the first winner of American Idol, she was never able to get back to the size from her “Since U Been Gone” days. In a 2015 interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Clarkson stated, “It’s like, you’re just who you are. We are who we are. Whatever size, and it doesn’t mean that we’re gonna be that forever.”
12. Tyra Banks
During the age of the supermodels, Tyra Banks was at the top of the list when it came to runway and magazine covers. However, times have started to change, and now designers and magazines are in search of celebrities to endorse and help sell their products. Banks was able to stay current through the hit television series, America’s Next Top Model. The show changed a few networks along the way, and is now slated to appear on VH1 for a 14-episode season. Banks has received criticism in recent years, due to her weight gain, but there is no word if this is the reason why she will only be working behind the scenes on the show from now on.
11. Britney Spears
Starting off as a Disney kid, the world seemed to put an added amount of pressure on her appearance and personal life once she transitioned into the music industry. She was once the epitome of fit and sexy, from the “Slave 4 U” performance at the MTV Awards to her music video where she wore nothing but strategically placed rhinestones. However, her weight gain has been more than just a little bit noticeable in recent years. It was the “Gimme More” performance at the VMAs that made people realize just how big Britney Spears could get, and reportedly she broke down afterwards and said, “Oh, my God, I looked like a fat pig!”
Although Raven-Symone probably had her biggest acting moments back when she was on The Cosby Show, she branched off into a semi-successful music career and has since continued on to become a celebrated television personality. However, she has grown immensely since her time as Olivia Kendall (and not just in height). While she maintained her cute status when she appeared on the Disney show, That’s So Raven, her physique has become quite sizable over the years. She is now thought of as a full-figure celebrity, and doesn’t seem to be making any strides in diminishing that title. She can now be seen through her Olivia character on Empire and as a host on the daytime talk show, The View.
9. Anna Gunn
While Anna Gunn has acted in a number of roles on the big screen, she is best known for her character portrayals on television. Starring in hit shows like HBO’s Deadwood and The Practice, it was her role as Skyler White on Breaking Bad that people best recognize for Gunn. While she was never toothpick skinny, she was relatively thin-framed during the peak of her career. However, fans saw her widen with each new season of Breaking Bad, and by the end, she was almost unrecognizable. From her waist size to her thickened arms, Gunn doesn’t seem like she will be able to get back to her original size any time soon.
8. Kirstie Alley
During the peak of her career, Kirstie Alley had a string of awards and accolades for hit roles in shows like Cheers and the Look Who’s Talking film series. However, she gained an immense amount of weight that made fans wonder whether or not she would ever be able to get back to the size she was when she was one of Hollywood’s favorite leading ladies. She did manage to lose a substantial amount of weight when she was a spokesperson for Jenny Craig, but the damage was already done through her unhindered eating habits. During a 2012 interview on The Dr. Oz Show, Alley admitted that her weight gain could be attributed to her obsessive eating habits during her early onset of menopause.
7. Johnny Galecki
Not many actors can boast being on a successful television series in the 90’s, and then go on to a current hit television show. When Johnny Galecki was on the hit sitcom, Roseanne, no one would have thought the show would spawn so many prominent actors. The show gave an early start to some of the biggest names in Hollywood, and Galecki went on to star in another hit show, The Big Bang Theory. Previously the scrawny boyfriend to the Roseanne character, Darlene, he started the original season of The Big Bang Theory with the same small stature he was known for. However, going into the tenth season of the show, Galecki has filled out immensely, and now is more portly than scrawny.
6. Alec Baldwin
There was a time when the Baldwin brothers were the pinnacle of Hollywood heartthrobs, with each more good-looking than the next. From William Baldwin’s portrayal as the super-hot firefighter in Backdraft to Stephen Baldwin as the hottie gun-wielding character in Fall Time, it seemed like the entire family was filled with A-list celebrities meant for continued leading man success and role opportunities. Although Alec Baldwin has had quite a successful run on television through hits like 30 Rock, he didn’t exactly maintain his trim physique. Filling out immensely in the face, the biggest thing to struggle with is his once chiseled jaw line.
5. Kevin Federline
When Kevin Federline was first introduced to the public, he quickly drew criticism as the man that put Britney Spears in a downward spiral. However, public perception changed once further details emerged about the true state of Britney Spears’ mental health. Once he received full custody, people realized he must not have been so bad after all, since custody judges don’t often take children away from their mothers. While public opinion about his fathering skills have changed, so has the perception about his physique. It’s almost unbelievable to think that he once started off as a background dancer, since he seems to have ballooned to twice his original size.
4. Drew Barrymore
It’s difficult to say which era was the exact moment when Drew Barrymore hit her peak, since she has starred in so many successful films throughout her professional career. From the super cute child actress in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial to the hugely popular run in the Charlie’s Angels film series, everyone seems to have their own favorite Drew Barrymore moment. However, it has been quite some time since she was in the phenomenal shape of her Poison Ivy days. Nowadays, she focuses more on being a mother, than snapping back to her pre-baby weight, but she hasn’t seemed to lose that girlish appeal fans have come to love.
3. Jodie Sweetin
Starring as Stephanie Tanner in the hit television show, Full House, fans always thought of her as the scrawny sister that would probably one day grow into a great beauty. Other cast members have since used their sitcom fame to help catapult their careers, with John Stamos becoming the hottest Grandfather on TV and Candice Cameron becoming the newest member on The View. However, Jodie Sweetin didn’t make the same profitable transition into adulthood. Often seen on the red carpet looking a bit disproportionately busty with wide set arms, Sweetin looks much bigger than her size during the peak of her career.
2. Bob Saget
When Bob Saget starred on Full House, he seemed like a man that would never fully be able to fill out a suit. Stick-skinny with an ultra thin face, he looked similar to Bill Nye the Science Guy rather than a Hollywood ladies man. Saget has since evolved his persona with provocative roles on television and film, and even played a fictionalized version of himself on Entourage where he prided himself in spending thousands on prostitutes. On top of his public persona, his face has changed a bit as well. Featuring a much wider look and filling out in the body, Bob Saget looks quite a bit different than his peak years on Full House.
1. Jack Nicholson
Back in the ’70s, Jack Nicholson was the epitome of Hollywood gold when it came to his acting skills and striking looks. The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Chinatown were just a few of the films that helped make him into the megastar he is today. While his acting career has definitely continued to thrive through the years, his look in The Departed is completely different than his earlier peak years. Filling out in the face and body, paparazzi love to follow him onto the beach and take snapshots of his over-sized gut in swim trunks. While his body may have changed, it doesn’t seem to affect his ability to draw in audiences at the movie theater or keep away beautiful starlets from jumping onto his arm.
