Are you ready for some breakups? Well, like it or not, there have been plenty of sad sob stories of celebrity co-stars getting together and becoming romantically linked only to have a devastating breakup or divorce. And worse yet, sometimes the relationship drama even threatens to destroy the TV series they are starring on! We have some examples right here with our list of 15 Celebrity Couples Whose Real-Life Romances Ruined Their Shows. It’s a tad depressing, but just remember that there are also plenty of happy and healthy couples who are doing quite well! Just think of Kristen Bell and Dax Shephard or Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas. See? It isn’t so bad, and some of these breakups have led to celebs marrying awesome people and becoming power couples…we’re looking at you, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis! So you see, it won’t be as bad as you think!
Before we begin, we should ruminate over what makes for a successful celebrity relationship. It probably helps if they are in the same location. After all, long distance relationships are super tough, especially when you add insecurity and jealousy to the mix! Celebrities are constantly being bombarded with fans, producer requests, and the demands of their busy jobs and lifestyle. That is enough to send anyone into a panicked frenzy. Just imagine having a significant other on top of that! Crazy! So it really is no wonder that these 15 celebrity couples have had troubles with their relationships, and that it even affected the shows they were starring on.
15. Nina Dobrev & Ian Somerhalder
Let’s start off with a very popular TV series: The Vampire Diaries. On the show, there is tons of drama and romance and all sorts of riveting action. Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder were co-stars who ended up falling for each other while on the set of The Vampire Diaries. Aw cute, right? Well, maybe not. The relationship took a turn for the worse and Nina actually ended up leaving the show. And it wasn’t too long before Ian was off the show as well. Whoops, that wasn’t part of the plan, and ratings for The Vampire Diaries took a major nosedive. Yet all might not be lost. Nina and Ian have been spotted hanging around town together and the paparazzi have snapped some pictures that suggest they are on friendly terms. Maybe they’re even working together!? The speculation has led to fans pushing for a reunion of the characters on the show, so you’ll just have to stayed tuned to see if The Vampire Diaries can recover.
14. Kit Harington & Rose Leslie
So their romance didn’t exactly ruin Game of Thrones (we don’t know if anything could ruin Game of Thrones,) but in real life, Harington and Leslie had a tumultuous relationship. They dated, they broke up, they kind of dated after that…it was an on-again off-again thing. It may have had something to do with the fact that Rose’s character, Ygritte, ends up shooting Harington’s character (Jon Snow) in an epic battle scene. This show is not for the faint of heart, and forget about trying to be all lovey dovey in Game of Thrones! Still, it hasn’t stopped Kit and Rose from continuing their dating drama. Since 2012, the couple has been on fire, then ice cold, then lukewarm. It is so hard to keep track of them! And while Jon Snow continues to be a fierce character in the show, Rose’s character is long gone. We’ve got to keep our eyes on these two.
13. Daniel Sharman & Crystal Reed
This next couple was starring on the MTV series Teen Wolf. Daniel Sharman and Crystal Reed started dating in real life, and the producers thought that it would be great to have their on-screen characters date as well. Cue loads of sexual promiscuity and such. It was cute right? Because they were real life boyfriend and girlfriend, so there wouldn’t even be any awkwardness between them! Yeah, we know what the producers were thinking. Well, they were in for a rude awakening when Sharman broke up with Reed and her character was killed off the show. Ouch, a double whammy! Now they are both living the single life, whether they love it or not, and Teen Wolf has been on a brief hiatus as it spices up its cast list for fans. There is still so much speculation about who is involved, who isn’t, and how the storylines will pan out. Kind of messy.
12. Paul Wesley & Torrey DeVitto
We return now to The Vampire Diaries, but this time we are talking about Paul Wesley and Torrey DeVitto. The couple started dating while Torrey was making sporadic appearances on The Vampire Diaries. So that shouldn’t have been too bad for the producers and the couple. It’s not like some of the other examples on our list where there was so much drama to compare relationships to. Anyway, things must have been pretty nice for Paul and Torrey because they ultimately got hitched! But the magic of marriage didn’t last long and they ended up filing for divorce. On top of all of that, DeVitto was removed from The Vampire Diaries for good. Super lame! Nowadays, both of the actors are still single (they got divorced in 2013,) and The Vampire Diaries is still going strong. In spite of characters and romances dying, this show just won’t! Haha, you see what we did there?
11. Joshua Jackson & Katie Holmes
How about we go back to the days of Dawson’s Creek? Those were the good times, and Dawson’s Creek was one of those brilliant gems from 1990s television. We shall remember it fondly. Anyway, Dawson’s Creek actors Joshua Jackson and Katie Holmes started dating in real life, but then they split up. The weird thing was that after their breakup, the producers decided to have their on-screen characters begin dating. Obviously, the magic just wasn’t there. Too bad, because it helped to derail the show, which ended in 2003 amid tears and sobs. Katie Holmes had blossomed into stardom and then she got hitched to Tom Cruise and all sorts of crazy stuff started happening there, including rumors that she was the chosen one from the Church of Scientology. As for Joshua Jackson, he has been with actress Diane Kruger since 2006. So, do we get to call it even now?
10. Michael Vartan & Jennifer Garner
Here’s an old-school example for you. Have you ever watched Alias? Then you know about Michael Vartan and Jennifer Garner. The two actors dated in real life and their on-screen were also romantically involved with each other. It was like the perfect coincidence in love; think Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas. Anyway, Vartan and Garner ended up breaking up in real life and it seemed to negatively affect the show, which disbanded shortly afterwards. R.I.P. Alias. However if it weren’t for that breakup, we wouldn’t have had Ben-Jen (that would be Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner). But if we didn’t have Ben-Jen, then we wouldn’t have had the scandalous divorce (Ben had cheated on Jen with their children’s nanny). Are you dizzy yet? We’re just going to use this example as a PSA that celebrities should not date each other. To make things even more complicated, it seems like Vartan and Garner have gotten back in touch after her divorce.
9. Chad Michael Murray & Sophia Bush
You just can’t talk about TV couples without mentioning One Tree Hill. Two of the characters were played by Chad Michael Murray and Sophia Bush. The actors met on the set of One Tree Hill and got married rather quickly. Tell us there weren’t people warning about red flags. A quick engagement is always something to be wary of. So, of course, the couple that ended up getting quickly hitched, ended up getting divorced. Boohoo and lots of tears, but that wasn’t even the worse part of it. One Tree Hill fans were sobbing because shortly after his divorce from Bush, he left the show! Bummer! The actor stayed single for a while, and ended up marrying Sarah Roemer in 2015. It’s too soon to tell if that will work out, but we’re hoping for the best! Sophia Bush is still out there waiting for Mr. Right. Wink wink, boys!
8. Jesse Spencer & Jennifer Morrison
Actors Jesse Spencer and Jennifer Morrison were both starring as characters of the TV series House M.D. The couple started dating in real life and things got so serious that they became engaged. Yay, yay, everyone is super happy. But then the engagement was called off just mere months before the wedding. What the heck happened? Apparently, things get really complicated and heavy when you and your fiancé are rich and famous and have a successful show on TV. Things were just getting way too out of hand for the two, and they started arguing about everything. One night they just had a really bad verbal fight and the engagement was kaput. And then to make matters worse, Morrison’s character was axed from the show. That sucks! And perhaps the saddest part of all is that both of the actors are still single and ready to mingle. But don’t count on a reunion.
7. Adam Brody & Rachel Bilson
Man, we’re really going back in time here, but hang in there. Remember The O.C.? Well, two of the co-stars were Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson, who started dating, but it caused way too much stress and frustration on the show’s set, so they ended up splitting up. Aw man! Well, cheer up because it wasn’t all bad. Adam Brody ended up getting together with another hot actress: Leighton Meester. In fact, the couple tied the knot in 2014 and they are still going strong! So good things happened. As for Rachel Bilson, she has been romantically involved with Hayden Christensen since 2007, so things appear to be okay for her as well. Phew, that’s a relief! At least those two O.C. alums ended up okay. We can’t say that for others. What about Mischa Barton and her erratic behavior and dispossessed car? That’s for another article, clearly!
6. Mark Salling & Naya Rivera
Glee was one of the most successful TV series of the 2000s. It featured a rocking cast that was naturally talented and it even helped to catapult the careers of some of the cast members. There was also quite a bit of drama and gossip going on behind the scenes of Glee. That’s not very gleeful! (Sorry, but we had to do it.) Anyway, one such example of this drama was between Mark Salling and Naya Rivera. The co-stars had a rocky romantic relationship that started good, then went down, then up, then down. In fact, there were loads of rumors circulating that there were girl fights, jealousy issues, all sorts of things that fans really don’t want to deal with, Let alone co-stars! So eventually the show just called it quits in 2015. It was a good run and people still admire the show and how it handled real-life problems. Maybe there should have been a bit more attention on romance!
5. Milo Ventimiglia & Hayden Panettiere
Remember the show Heroes? It was super cool back in the day, and Hayden Panettiere was one of the hottest stars of the TV series. Well, she was also a co-star of Milo Ventimiglia’s and the two actors started dating in real life. All right, that’s fine because things were looking good for a while, but then they broke up. Their on-screen characters continued to be platonic, even though loads of fans were pushing for their One True Pairing. But the producers were thinking that it just wasn’t in the cards for these two particular characters. Even so, there was some tension between the two characters because come on, they were in a romantic relationship and then they broke up. All of the drama led to producers keeping Hayden and Milo’s characters in separate scenes, but Heroes ended up being canceled shortly after.
4. Steve Carell & Nancy Carell
Ah yes, The Office. It was one of those shows that just seemed so mundane and yet interesting…just like real life. Perhaps that is why it was such a hit with so many audiences. Anyway, Steve Carell and Nancy Carell were both actors on the show and the couple is married in real life, so good for them. But why did the producers have to go and make them an item on The Office? Or according to some people, why did they try to derail the amazing plot line of The Office and try to make them an item?! Why?! Steve’s character proposes to Nancy’s character and she turns him down. This just led to the series being weird, but not in a good kind of weird, which is what The Office was all about. Don’t the producers know that office romances rarely turn into anything good? Come on now!
3. Mackenzie Phillips & Her Dad
Oh man, this one is a real doozy, so hang in there with us here. Actress Mackenzie Phillips is now 56 years old, but back in the day she was a star of the 1970s. The good old days, you know? She was part of the singing group The Mamas and The Papas and she also snagged some acting gigs. Perhaps her most well-known acting role was on One Day at a Time, but she also starred in some lesser-known TV series and movies. However, Phillips unleashed a huge truth bomb when she revealed that she had engaged in sexual relations with her own dad. Gross! The whole thing was a huge scandal and she was even on Oprah. And you know things are super serious when you land a spot on Oprah’s couch. Needless to say, Phillips has had trouble finding any acting or singing gigs since then, and we can pretty much deem her career OVER.
2. Sebastian Stan & Leighton Meester
Let’s talk about Gossip Girl again. Here we have another couple from the CW show: Sebastian Stan and Leighton Meester. So what happened with them? Well, they were a pretty hot commodity on the silver screen as their characters were heating up the storyline of the show. And as soon as their on-screen counterparts started dating, Stan and Meester found themselves in a real life romance with each other. So everything was all hunky dory for a while. But they just couldn’t keep the romance up and they ended up breaking up. That’s pretty much when their Gossip Girl characters broke up too. The romance died everywhere and the show was sort of starting to become a big sob story. But wait! Leighton Meester ended up marrying Adam Brody in real life, which helped to spice things up and make Leighton look like less of a victim of love.
1. Michael C. Hall & Jennifer Carpenter
Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter were co-stars on the hit series Dexter. In fact, they played siblings on the show. Then the actors started dating in real life and things started to get pretty serious between them. At one point they were even planning to run off and get married in secret. But then things got messed up, although thank goodness it wasn’t Dexter style messed up. It turned out that Hall had cheated on Carpenter with several women. That was a surefire way to end the relationship, but they still had to play siblings on Dexter. Talk about the ultimate awk-sauce. They were able to do it because hey, they’re professional actors. Still, it was a bit hard to watch for some people, and the show was just never the same after that. You can’t really be friendly with someone who cheated on you multiple times, you know?
