When it comes to taking an indecent photograph of yourself, you always need to be careful of who is going to see it. You certainly shouldn’t be swiping everyone you can see on Tinder, and sending your junk out all willy-nilly, though you’d be surprised how often that happens! If you’re a celebrity, we’re talking about a whole new level of security and privacy that needs to go into what you do. An intimate photo of yourself, if you’re someone like Scarlett Johansson, is going to explode and be absolutely everywhere. Talk about the pressure being on to get the right angle!
Yet celebrities can take all the precautions they want, they still are never truly safe. Apple’s iCloud system was compromised back in 2014, and with it became available hundreds of sensitive photographs of some of the biggest stars in the world.
On top of that, an infamous trail occurred several years ago after several prominent celebrities (including the above mentioned Scarlett) had their privacy violated and their photos leaked onto the internet.
Outside of those two incidents, there are still unfortunate moments where celebrities have their privacy compromised and that too is outlined below.
Small hint as to what’s below: We have two Best Actress winners, music artists that have sold millions and millions of records and are some of the biggest in the industry today. We have sitcom stars that have been on your television set for years and years, and whether you love or hate their show, you better believe you’ll recognize them. One of these people even had photos released that were taken when they were underage (Yikes!).
We’ve got a member of a royal family, proving that truly anyone’s security has the ability to be attacked. These are some of the most successful and beautiful women in the entire world. Yet that just made them a bigger target for some of the biggest photo leaks of all time. Here are only 20 of the stars who have been impacted.
If you reach the end of this list and still want more names, there are 21 more actresses who escaped this list but were unable to escape having very private photos of them leaked.
20. Kate Upton
The iCloud scandal attacked people from all industries, and as you’ll keep learning below, that included a lot of models. Just in case you aren’t already aware, Kate Upton just happens to be one of the most popular models in the world today. In fact, in 2014, People magazine voted her as the sexiest woman in the world! As a result, you can imagine how excited the internet got when they realized that there were several “sensitive” photos of Upton out there.
Upton’s prominence also comes from the fact that she was dating one of the best pitchers in baseball, Justin Verlander, who also happened to have his body out on display! I can only imagine the locker-room teasing he had to endure!
Upton was represented by her attorney Lawrence Shire who was not shy about his feelings on the matter. “This is obviously an outrageous violation of our client Kate Upton’s privacy,” Shire said in the statement released to Us magazine. “We intend to pursue anyone disseminating or duplicating these illegally obtained images to the fullest extent possible.”
While the overall ramifications of the matter are not clear, you can hope this would make somebody think twice before they go after Upton’s privacy again!
19. Victoria Justice
When it comes to shocking celebrities to have photos released, you have to consider a Nickelodeon star to be pretty high on the list! After all, they made their career by appearing in children’s TV shows. Seeing them get sexualized is just weird, albeit captivating! Victoria Justice made a name for herself on Zoey 101, Victorious and is currently the lead role in the series Eye Candy which airs on MTV. Justice was unfortunately targeted in the iCloud scandal and originally came out stating that the photos of her were fake. When this proved impossible after people looked at the various aspects of the photos that were undeniable, she responded
“Shortly after I tweeted about pics of me being fake, I was faced with a serious violation of privacy. There have always been fake photos of me on the internet, but I will not be put in the position to defend myself as to what is real or what is fake. I am angry at this massive invasion of privacy, and like the other women who are in this situation alongside of me, I am taking legal action to protect my rights.”
You can’t blame her for having her original reaction be to try and pretend the whole thing doesn’t exist. Thankfully she was smart enough to know to take legal action to make sure her future privacy is secured.
18. Emily Ratajkowski
You may not like the song “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke, but there is no doubt that the song was absolutely everywhere. And I really do have to apologize to you if it’s now going to be stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
Though one thing that almost everyone loved, was the fact that the video starred Emily Ratajkowski, who has also appeared in the music video of “Love Somebody” by Maroon 5. On top of that, Emily is no stranger to the camera, appearing in several modelling campaigns, though she was one of the many celebrities affected by the iCloud scandal. While some people on this list condoned the people who look at the photos (including yourself if you go Googling after!), Emily instead attacked the hackers themselves, saying the following.
“A lot of people who were victims of [the hack] said anyone who looks at these pictures should feel guilty, but I just don’t think that’s fair…I’m not sure that anyone who Googles it is necessarily a criminal. I think the people who stole the photos are.”
I don’t think there are many people out there that would argue that the violation of privacy was definitely a criminal act.
17. Mary E Winstead
When it comes to outstanding female horror film actresses, Mary Winstead is one of the best ones out there, appearing in Final Destination 3, Death Proof, Black Christmas, and 10 Cloverfield Lane. Though there was nothing scary about the fact that she had some private photos of herself released!
Outside of the horror genre, she’s even appeared in two Die Hard films, so you better believe she is one tough cookie! Yet someone still had the courage to release her private photos, which as you can imagine did not sit well with the actress. She took to Twitter after the iCloud scandal, stating
“To those of you looking at photos I took with my husband years ago in the privacy of our home, hope you feel great about yourselves. Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this. Feeling for everyone who got hacked.”
Nobody would have blamed her for taking private photos with her loved one, which just makes it all the more upsetting when her privacy gets violated like this.
Winstead’s next career move is the CBS, political comic thriller BrainDead which debuted on June 13th, 2016. Winstead is also not staying too far from the big screen, appearing in The Art of Self-Defense which will come out in 2017.
16. Kelly Brook
When you take one look at Kelly Brook and are asked to guess what she does for a living, you wouldn’t be wrong if you guessed modelling. Though like many professional models, Brook has also had her fair share of time behind a camera when she appeared in Piranha 3D. Brook was also cast in the TV series One Big Happy which also starred Elisha Cuthbert, but the series was cancelled after one season.
Unfortunately, what found more success for Brook, was the popularity of her personal photos which were spread all over the internet. Brook was clearly not expecting this, and had previously stated “The only [private] photos you’ll ever see of me are the ones that I ‘leak’ and the ones that my head are superimposed on!” Though given that there were numerous photos, taken at various selfie angles, you can imagine there was no denying that Brook was baring it all for the camera!
Just goes to show that even if you think your privacy is secured, you never really do know. Nobody would blame celebrities if they tried to be more cautious with their privacy and the photos they do, or do not share, going forward.
15. Hope Solo
Hope Solo is one of the best goalies in United States history, winning two gold medals during her career. As a result, there is definitely no denying that Hope is one of the best goalies out there and an inspiration to many young female soccer players. Yet no matter how good she is, there was no way for her to block her images from being leaked onto the internet during the iCloud scandal.
Commenting on the matter, Solo stated “This act goes beyond the bounds of human decency and, as such, I stand united with all the women affected.”
Yikes! Looks like if she ever got her hands on the people responsible, they’d have to be the one’s doing the serious defending.
Hope had the unfortunate distinction of being one of the only athletes who was targeted in the iCloud scandal.
For those unfamiliar with the star, Solo is also no stranger to the negative spotlight, as she has also been arrested in the past on cases of domestic abuse. Let’s hope she doesn’t get her hands on whoever leaked the photos! Hope is currently the goalie for the Seattle Reign hockey team. Let’s hope she was able to reign in all of those photos!….awful joke, sorry!
14. Krysten Ritter
In comparison to some of the names on this list, Ritter has not had herself as iconic of a career. In fact, prior to her photos being leaked in the iCloud scandal, fans of Ritter may have last seen her overdosing beside Jesse on Breaking Bad. And call me crazy, but seeing her strung out and doing heroin with Jessie Pinkman was not exactly the most glamorous look for her image. Though I don’t know if a photo scandal involving Mr.White and Pinkman would have been nearly as popular!
While she did not comment on the photos that were leaked, there was no denying that the star was the one in the photos. Since appearing on Breaking Bad, Ritter has starred in her own series Don’t Trust The B—- In Apartment 23, but the series was cancelled half-way through the second season. I guess it’s not as easy to have a series that’s as popular as BBad!
You can also track down a much more clothed Ritter as she also stars in Marvel’s Netflix original series Jessica Jones. Given the new success of Netflix original programming, you can imagine she’s got her eyes peeled for any potential Netflix or superhero series that may be on the radar!
13. Brie Larson
Brie Larson was absolutely outstanding in the film Room, which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. On top of that, she’s shown her funny bone in great films like 21 Jump Street. She’s clearly got an incredibly bright future ahead of her and seems to have no problem taking on different challenging projects. Though one project she probably was not expecting to have to deal with, was having her privacy violated and several private photos of herself emerge.
Like many on the list, Brie was one of the celebrities that was linked to the iCloud scandal, and she chose not to comment on the matter. At the very least, ignoring it will probably help people forget about it, you know, at least until there is a list made about it. That being said, there is no doubt that she must have felt incredibly violated and upset by the incredible invasion of her privacy.
Want to get excited about an upcoming Brie project? How about the fact that the actress is heavily rumoured to having been cast as the superhero Captain Marvel?! There is nothing out there more captivating or hot right now than superhero films, so you can imagine Marvel would be ecstatic to land this juggernaut of an actress in their cast.
12. McKayla Maroney
If you want one of the biggest scandals from the iCloud leak, look no further than McKayla Maroney! Among the amazing celebrities impacted in the scandal came the outstanding U.S. Gymnast who had a compromising photo of herself released. While U.S. Gymnasts are not exactly in awful shape, they’re hardly the sex icons that actresses, musicians and models tend to be in our society. She immediately took to Twitter to claim that the photo of her was a fake. Yet what was not fake was the letter that her attorneys sent to an x-rated website stating that McKayla was underage in several of the photos, oops! As you can imagine, the site made quick work of taking the photos off of their website. You’re already treading in some difficult waters when you have leaked photos of celebrities hosted on your website, and things become a lot more serious when the photos get accused of being underage!
McKayla is currently still only 20 years old, which means you may have ogled at her pictures online but according to the states: She’s never been able to legally consume alcohol!
Don’t expect to see her perform again though, she announced her retirement from the sport in 2016 citing numerous health issues.
11. Kaley Cuoco
Kaley Cuoco may be one of the most recognizable faces on television. Whether you love or hate The Big Bang Theory, with 9 seasons under their belt, there’s no doubt it is one of the most successful sitcoms of all time. As a result, you can imagine people were quick to recognize Kaley’s face (and more!) when her images were attached to the iCloud scandal.
Cuoco poked fun at herself, posting a photo to Instagram later that week with her bathing suit overly censored. Perhaps being able to make a career for herself on a comedy show has helped her learn to take things like this in stride and with a funny spin! A positive attitude for someone to take after something like this happens can be great to see, especially when you consider that there is no way that you are going to be able to undo the damage!
With The Big Bang Theory being well past its prime (at least according to many), lots of fans are hopeful that Kaley will be able to transition her success and good looks to the big screen. Let’s just hope Sheldon doesn’t decide to make an appearance on a list like this anytime soon!
10. Kirsten Dunst
Kirsten Dunst has appeared in several fantastic films, including my personal favourite, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Though when you think Dunst, you are probably thinking about her biggest role in which she played the fiery Mary-Jane in the older Spider-Man movie series. Yet there was no superhero out there that was able to save her from being a part of this leaked photo scandal!
Dunst took to Twitter after the scandal, thanking Apple sarcastically for their fantastic iCloud system. As you can imagine, Dunst is one of many celebrities that called out Apple for allowing something like this to happen on such a major scale. I don’t know if you know this, but Apple is a pretty big company, so you can understand why so many celebrities were impacted in the scandal.
Dunst went on to state that she tries to “have a sense of humor about a really unfortunate situation. The FBI is investigating, so they’re handling it right now.”
As you saw above with Upton, Dunst is far from the last celebrity to state that they were going to take legal action after the incident occurred. Though I bet she wouldn’t receive as much money as the next person we have on our list!
9. Erin Andrews
Erin Andrews is one of the best female sports casters, but her life was forever altered after she was victim of a stalking incident. While many of these females had nude photos of them leak, Andrews’ situation was a lot more unique and in some ways, even more violating.
Andrews was in her hotel room when she was filmed through the peephole by Michael David Barrett. The video was released online and quickly went viral, which only made it all the easier to track Barrett down. Who says you need to be smart to be a criminal? Perhaps not shockingly (because you know, he’s an idiot and a creep), Barrett ended up being sentenced to 30 months in prison, three years of probation, $5,000 in fines and ordered to pay $7,366 in restitution.
Andrews issued a civil lawsuit in 2015 against Barrett and the Nashville Marriott (where she was filmed) for $75 million. She was eventually awarded $55 million in the case. That is definitely not a bad payday, but you can imagine Andrews would have much rather not had her privacy violated than have to deal with this entire scandal. Especially considering her image has forever been impacted because of the situation.
8. Gabrielle Union
Gabrielle Union may be best recognized by NBA fans as being by the side of Dwyane Wade. Though that is hardly the only thing she has done, as she is also an accomplished actress, appearing in films such as Bring it On, She’s All That and 10 Things I Hate About You.
Perhaps this is how she was able to catch the eye of Wade, and the two married in 2014. As you can imagine with their busy lives, they do not have any children between them. Though that being said, kudos to Gabrielle who is a step-mother to three of Wade’s children. Union was understandably furious when she discovered that images of her were released as part of the iCloud scandal, and stated that she was going to the FBI.
“It has come to our attention that our private moments, that were shared and deleted solely between my husband and myself, have been leaked by some vultures…I can’t help but to be reminded that since the dawn of time women and children, specifically women of color, have been victimized, and the power over their own bodies taken from them. These atrocities against women and children continue worldwide.”
Union was one of the few women of color that were targeted during the iCloud scandal.
7. Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera‘s image has gone through several transitions in her career. From the dirty girl, to the cleaner-cut judge on The Voice, there is still no doubt that she is one of the biggest musical artists of all time. Even if you don’t recognize her songs, you might recognize her body, as she has been one of the biggest sex icons in society’s history. Though she wishes you wouldn’t be able to recognize her in the buff!
You can imagine that when her name was linked to a leaked photo scandal, everyone took notice. Nobody deserves to have their personal matters shared on the internet like that, as she went onto state “That feeling of security can never be given back, and there is no compensation that can restore the feeling one has from such a large invasion of privacy.”
People may be jealous of celebrities, but it is very clear that their fame comes with a very heavy cost. Celebrities don’t need any more money. What they need, and deserve, is the right to their private life. The next time you take a selfie of yourself, take solace in the fact that there isn’t a chance it’s going to be seen by countless strangers.
6. Kate Middleton
There are many celebrities out there to be jealous of, but would you really want to be Kate Middleton? Just think of the endless pressure to always make sure you are looking good! One time that Kate was probably not preparing to look her best, was what landed her the list. A French photographer decided it would be a great idea to start snapping some photos of Kate Middleton in the buff as she sunbathed with Prince William. The photos were not exactly graphic (especially in comparison to some people on the list), but you can imagine it caused quite a stir.
Their was an official statement made on the matter. “Their Royal Highnesses have been hugely saddened to learn that a French publication and a photographer have invaded their privacy in such a grotesque and totally unjustifiable manner,” according to a statement released by their aides. “The incident is reminiscent of the worst excesses of the press and paparazzi during the life Diana, Princess of Wales, and all the more upsetting to the Duke and Duchess for being so.”
While you can imagine most people would just side with Kate, Piers Morgan tweeted out “Of course Kate’s entitled to privacy, and this was a grotesque invasion, but sunbathing topless near a public road’s just daft…. There’s a reason the Queen’s never been photographed topless or playing naked billiards. It’s called, ironically, ‘common sense.’”
5. Pete Wentz
Pete Wentz might not be the most attractive man in the world, but he’s a talented musician and just happens to be fairly recognizable. Wentz was the bassist and primary songwriter for the band Fall Out Boy, and was also the host of the television show Best Ink.
Speaking of ink, unfortunately for himself, he also happens to have a tattoo that made it incredibly obvious that it was him in the photos when his phone was hacked.
Wentz was upset over the scandal, and when talking to TheGuardian, he stated “You don’t have to love somebody, you don’t even have to like somebody, but hacking into their phone and taking pictures of theirs is just ridiculous. People don’t think there’s a human being attached.”
Wentz speaks to the fact that celebrities often get placed on a pedestal in society, but that they still have real feelings and don’t deserve to have something like this happen to them. Hard to argue with that! Wentz went as far to state that he was even considering stepping away from his band due to the incident. Thankfully for his fans, he has thick skin, but it’s a reminder that both genders can be impacted by this.
4. Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson is one of the most beautiful women in the world, and given that she’s the Black Widow, she also knows how to kick some serious ass (…at least on screen). Perhaps she had some pointers for Ryan Reynolds, who’s clearly no stranger to some ass-kicking on screen. The two have been married in the past, but separated after 3 years. Though her private photos were released prior to her superhero role, so perhaps the hacker didn’t know what he was getting himself into!
The photos were taken when Ryan and Scarlett were still together and showed Scar-Jo in a variety of compromising angles. The photos were allegedly taken 3 years previously to Chaney finding them on her cell phone and releasing them to the public (talk about your past catching up to you).
Scarlett commented on the matter stating, “I know my best angles,” she said. “There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s not like I was shooting a p*rno. Although there’s nothing wrong with that, either.”
A big credit is owed to Scarlett for opening up about the fact that there is nothing wrong about trying to take flattering pictures for the people you love. The problem comes in when that privacy then gets violated and you are forced to deal with the ramifications of your actions.
3. Mila Kunis
Many people fell in love with Mila Kunis when her first big break, That ’70s Show, found a huge following and ran for 8 seasons. While it can always be weird to see younger stars turn into sex symbols, there is no doubting that Mila is continuing to get more beautiful with age. Since her success on the show, she’s expanded to voice acting in shows like Family Guy and also found big-picture success with several great films under her belt such as Friends with Benefits, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
The sitcom star was outed in the same scandal that exposed Scarlett Johansson. In photos posted online, Kunis is seen without clothes. Sounds basic, but that’s all it takes to violate someone’s privacy. Along with photos of herself were topless photos of Justin Timberlake (bet he wish he could make those photos go bye, bye bye!).
While you’ve learned about several celebrities that have denied that it was them in the photos, Kunis was required to confirm that it was her in the photos as part of the FBI investigation behind Chaney’s arrest. The main benefit for Mila is that she is now a new Mom and married to Ashton Kutcher, so you can hope that this awkward part of her past is long behind her.
There are several celebrities whose names were supposedly linked to the iCloud scandal, but their images did not get the same traction (due to quick removal) or because the celebrity decided not to comment on the matter. Rihanna is one of the biggest stars that was supposedly part of the 2nd release of iCloud leaks.
Yet even if those didn’t gain traction, that was unfortunately not the only time that Rihanna has had her privacy seriously violated. Back in 2009 there were sensitive photos of Rihanna posted online that became a much bigger deal and caused the star to comment on the matter.
Rihanna called the experience “humiliating and it was embarrassing – especially my mom having to see that.” Talk about an awkward conversation to try and have with your mom the next time you sit down at the dinner table!
To make things worse, the leak came at the heels of the photos of her face after being beaten by Chris Brown being released. Like many celebrities on the list, Rihanna stated that the photos were originally taken for her boyfriend at the time. Thankfully Rihanna just happens to also be one of the most talented musicians in the world, so at least she has music and touring to focus on when times get hard!
1. Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence is one of the biggest stars in the world and is still under the age of 30. With an Academy Award under her belt, there is nobody out there that is able to deny her acting ability. Plus, if you tried to mess with her, who knows how many of her hunting skills from The Hunger Games translated to real life.
If you’re a fan of Jennifer Lawrence, you’ve probably seen her in a variety of interview formats. And one thing that is very clear as well, is just how fun of a person Jennifer seems to be. Her genuine personality made it all the more shocking when she was the face of the iCloud hack. 60 images of the star were published online in various states of undress. Clearly Lawrence was the primary target in the scandal, so a huge credit goes to her for being able to bounce back.
With definitely no way to deny it, as others on this list did, a spokesperson for Lawrence spoke out about the violation of privacy and stating that they would be pursuing legal action over the incident. At least with an Academy Award to her name, she knows that her acting ability will never be questioned.
