Celebrity A-listers seem to have the world at their fingertips when it comes to food. Restaurants roll out the red carpet to have them seen dining on their signature cuisine, and money is no object in finding the best cuts of meat or most lavish seafood dishes. Since celebrities have the ability to travel all around the world, they are able to fully indulge in authentic cuisine in the most beautiful places all over the globe.
However, not everyone is dining on grass-fed beef and the finest lobster. Celebrity often comes with a certain eccentricity that goes with the territory. Tom Cruise is famous for being a little out there when it comes to his Scientology beliefs and lifestyle choices. Prior to Katie Holmes giving birth to their first child, he gave an interview with GQ magazine saying he thought the placenta and umbilical cord would be “very nutritious.” While he later recanted the statement, and said he was only saying it in jest, the public wondered if he really was kidding. Known for outlandish behavior, we didn’t put it past him to do something like that behind closed doors.
Yet, there are many celebrities that aren’t just joking around about their over-the-top eating habits. Whether introduced to new types of cuisine through their world travels, just trying out the latest food trend for increased health and beauty, or just craving comfort foods from home, check out our list of the 13 strangest eating habits of A-list celebrities and see if you’d be willing to try out something more adventurous in the culinary world.
13. Selena Gomez – Pickles
During a May 2016 interview for Bon Appétit magazine, Selena Gomez opened up about her eating habits. While you might think she’s backstage doing breathing exercises or practicing choreography, she’s actually back there munching down pickles. On tour, she eats hot Cheetos and chocolate, which may not seem like the best combination, but it’s a staple for Gomez. Another one of her favorite tour bus items is a chicken pot pie, and not just one or two. Chicken pot pies used to be a regular for Gomez, until her trainer made her cut back. She was quoted by EW.com saying, “My trainer won’t let me eat [junk] but I can still have my pot pies. Just not every day.”
12. Eminem – Lunchables
While Eminem has made more than his fair share of enemies due to his never-ending celebrity feuds, the pubic became more endeared to him after his portrayal in 8 Mile. Giving a nod to his own humble upbringing in Detroit, fans liked to see him in more of his element (outside the red carpet). It seems like he’s held onto those tastes from his youth, since many of his backstage requests are childlike in nature. In 2012, The Smoking Gun released some leaked backstage documents listing some of Eminem’s must-haves, and some are quite surprising. Requesting a 25 pound bag of dumbbells and six Lunchables snacks (3 turkeys and 3 ham and cheese), fans can rest assured Eminem hasn’t gone all Hollywood just quite yet.
11. Lady Gaga – Veggie Dogs And Red Bull
Lady Gaga is known for her over-the-top costumes and bizarre looks on the red carpet, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that her backstage requests are just as outlandish. Leaked backstage documents posted by The Smoking Gun had some usual favorites like Red Bull and tea, but there were some odd must-haves mixed in. Hot dogs are a must as her backstage staple, but not just any old style of hot dog: Yves veggie dogs. They must be eaten with toothpicks (provided by the venue). Also, there must be a full-on smoothie station, complete with frozen berries, Fuze and whey protein, and a blender. While some celebs request a smoothie or two, Lady Gaga apparently needs an entire station to be constructed when she arrives.
10. Bill Gates – Poop Water
The world’s most innovative billionaire businessman, Bill Gates has always been known for his efforts in philanthropy. While celebrities usually provide philanthropy work through volunteering with UNICEF or donating money to their favorite causes, Gates is more of a hands-on kind of guy in his efforts. The Gates Foundation is revolutionizing water, but not through other celebrity endeavors like Asa Rahmati’s Diamond Water or Diddy and Mark Wahlberg’s AQUAhydrate. Instead, Gates is using a machine that converts piles of feces into drinking water. In 2015, he went on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and challenged him to a taste testing contest. While Jimmy initially spit it out, Gates gulped down his glass without flinching.
9. Hugh Hefner
Many people can relate to being used to a particular routine, but Hugh Hefner takes it to another level. Although he has the opportunity to fly to any restaurant around the world, he doesn’t partake in any food that isn’t prepared through his own food staff. During the taping of The Girls Next Door, fans were privy to all the oddities that surround his eating habits. While he does occasionally go to different restaurants, he has all his food prepared beforehand and brought to whatever venue he visits. While everyone has their own favorites when it comes to meals, it’s definitely a bit strange to have these meals prepared and brought to a restaurant.
8. Gwyneth Paltrow – $200 Smoothie
Gwyneth Paltrow has been criticized for many of the features on her lifestyle website, Goop. The site only features lifestyle hacks and products available to the rich and famous, and comes off as more than just a little over-indulgent. Articles like, “How to host the best yacht party,” aren’t exactly accessible to the general public. However, it was the smoothie recipe that seemed to cause the biggest stir. Claiming she drinks this $200 smoothie every morning, readers wondered what could possibly be worth so much for a morning pick-me-up. The smoothie is made with Cordyceps, which is a fungus that has been used to parasite insects to turn them into “zombies.” While it is linked to medicinal use, it seems ridiculous to pay $200 for a fungus that may or may not be good for you.
7. Mariah Carey – Purple Food
New diets tend to pop up every few years, boasting the best results in weight loss. However, not all of them are able to maintain the adequate amount of nutrients needed in maintaining overall health. Mariah Carey is famous for her “Purple Diet” obsession, which she claimed was the reason behind her monumental weight loss after the birth of her twins. Eating only foods that were purple, she had a diet of only items like eggplant, plums, and grapes. Difficult to maintain for regular people, Mariah Carey had a whole team of individuals at her disposal to ensure she always had some purple food on hand.
6. Fergie – Apple Vinegar Cider
There are numerous dieting tricks that seem to pop up each year, with each claiming it is the secret to true weight loss. During a 2008 interview with Glamour magazine, Fergie gave some insight into what her dieting trick is and it involves apple cider vinegar. She claims taking daily shots of organic apple cider is the secret to maintaining a flatter stomach. In the article, she states, “Two tablespoons. For some reason I’ve noticed a difference on my stomach. I just trust [my trainer] on this one. I’m sharing. I’m all about sharing secrets.” While there isn’t any real medical research that backs up this hypothesis, the proof might be in her fantastic figure right after she gave birth.
5. Nicolas Cage – Something To Do With Animals Doing It
Nicolas Cage has been known for his over-the-top character portrayals in film, often going from zero to sixty in a matter of seconds (no Gone In 60 Seconds pun intended). Off-screen he has exhibited some off-the-wall behavior as well, from his dating life to his home décor choices. So, when he revealed his eating habits to The Sun in 2010, people were shocked to hear what he based his criteria on when it comes to what he will eat. Stating, “I actually choose the way I eat according to the way animals have sex. I think fish are very dignified with sex. So are birds. But pigs, not so much. So I don’t eat pig meat or things like that. I eat fish and fowl.”
4. Beyonce – Cayenne Pepper And Maple Syrup
Beyonce is a singer, dancer, and all around entertainer that is known for her womanly figure. She has always maintained a weight that is the happy medium between toothpick skinny and overly voluptuous. One of her secrets in maintaining that fabulous hourglass figure is the Master Cleanse Diet. While she isn’t the only celeb to rave about this diet, she has gone a little over the edge with the components. The cleansing drink consists of water, cayenne pepper, maple syrup and lemon juice. Drinking just one of these concoctions seems like a trying experience in itself, but Beyonce does it for two whole weeks at a time.
3. Shailene Woodley – Bone Marrow Broth
Bone marrow has always been an ultra succulent component to signature dishes at top restaurant venues. The flavor is unparalleled in savory stews and soups, and when paired with the perfect gravy it can really complement a pasta or rice dish. Shailene Woodley raved about her fascination with bone broth as a morning drink, and posted the recipe via David Letterman. On the Late Show she said, “I’ve been into bone broth for a long time and it’s really cool because now there is this whole Paleo movement and it’s getting a lot of attention. What I think is beautiful about it is that you’re using the whole animal. You’re not just seeking out that perfect cut of muscle meat.”
2. Angelina Jolie – Bugs
Angelina Jolie spent a lot of time in Cambodia while filming, and during her stay she seemed to pick up a new eating habit: Bugs. Everything from crickets to cockroaches, Jolie has raved about them on more than one occasion. In the book, What the Great Ate: A Curious History of Food and Fame, Jolie was quoted as saying, “There’s this very pointy bit on their stomach you just can’t eat. You have to kind of pop that off.” She calls cockroaches the perfect diet food, since they are meaty and high in protein. She also describes crickets as akin to potato chips, and doesn’t seem to be the least bit apologetic about her bug food fascination.
1. Salma Hayek –
In 2007, Salma Hayek appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and promoted the show, Have You Seen This. During the promo, Ellen brought out a Mexican delicacy that Hayek seemed absolutely thrilled to explain. The delicacy was crickets from Oaxaca. During the segment, she slathered some guacamole on a tortilla, and loaded it up with crickets (you need the guacamole otherwise the crickets will slide off the tortilla). When the audience started to cringe, Hayek said, “They’re really good! You guys have to be more daring! You don’t know what you’re missing!” Proving it wasn’t just a one-time thing, she posted an Instagram video in 2015 showing herself chomping down on a cricket and absolutely loving it!
