Celebrities live the high life. They are rich, successful, own big homes, and wear the most expensive clothes. Along with that they also have what most of us dream to have, which is power. While many use their status for the greater good, becoming admirable role models in the process, there are others who take their new found privilege for granted. However, there was one thing that can bridge ordinary people and celebrities that would put us on an equal playing field and it is that nobody is above the law in the United States, regardless of social status or tax bracket.
Since the late 2000s, smartphones have continued to increase in popularity. With that, these devices have made communication efficient, convenient, and faster thanks to text messaging. Which is a great thing and all but this has also decreased our attention spans from other important areas of life from texting during dinner, in class, and even on the road. Today, more than half of the United States now have laws in place banning texting while driving to help lower driving distractions and prevent collision injuries, including deaths. Despite having these laws in place for our own safety, there are some individuals who can not help but respond when their notification ringtone goes off.
Sadly, big celebrities fall into temptation risking everyone’s lives including their own to answer one more text. We have compiled a list of 11 stars who don’t know when to say no to texting while driving.
11. Amanda Bynes
This one shouldn’t be a complete surprise. These days she is doing her best to get her life together but a few years ago, Amanda Bynes was going down a bad road. Back in 2012, the former Nickelodeon and Easy A star had just been released from jail, charged with a DUI. A week later while out clubbing in Hollywood, CA, Bynes was photographed texting and driving as she was leaving the Chateau Marmont. Then she backed up and hit a curb. Nobody was hurt. Hopefully, she doesn’t repeat this stunt again as she continues to get her life back on track.
It is one thing to text and drive but tweet and drive just takes things to a whole other level. According to MTV News, Snooki from The Jersey Shore learned the hard way when she was tweeting about being in heavy traffic in her home state of New Jersey. What was worse was Newark Mayor, Cory Booker, replied to her tweet to remind her that texting and driving could get her fined. To add more insult to injury, U.S Secretary of Transportation, Ray LaHood, praised Booker’s tweet. Though she was not arrested, she did not respond to either officials’ tweets. Maybe she got the point?
9. Colin Farrell
Saving Mr. Banks and In Bruges actor Colin Farrell has had his fair share of run-ins with the law. This time the former Hollywood bad boy was caught on camera driving through the streets of Beverly Hills, California answering some text messages along the way to wherever he was going. He wasn’t arrested. He was never fined or charged with anything! Maybe the text was important to take; we doubt it but we do hope that he has stopped doing this heinous act now he is on a more sober path.
8. Hayden Panettierre
On our list is a former Disney Channel darling and Heroes star Hayden Panettiere. She was caught violating the law when she was photographed reportedly texting as she was driving to her therapy session. Could she be texting her therapist to let her know she was on the way? Probably not but it’s possible. You never know? Regardless, she should have just saved the text for later because it is not worth endangering yourself. We are just happy that she made it there safely and on time. We also hope she had a nice session.
7. Kim Kardashian
On May 28 of this year, Kim Kardashian was spotted texting and driving while on California’s 101 freeway in her classy Rolls Royce. This comes just months after her stepmother Caitlyn Jenner was involved in a devastating crash that left one person dead. Not the best of life choices there, especially since this was after her stepmom was in a tragic accident. You are very lucky, Kim.
6. Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner has also made some poor decisions lately. She was spotted driving in Calabasas, California texting behind the wheel earlier this year. Much like her big stepsister Kim, she committed this offense just only a few short weeks after Caitlyn Jenner’s fatal car crash in the nearby area. We understand that Kylie is only a teenager but the risks of a collision is much higher because of lack of driving experience. You can do better Kylie. We know you can.
5. Kendall Jenner
There seems to be a trend in this Jenner/Kardashian family when it comes to poor driving skills, except Kendall Jenner appears to be a repeat offender! The newly successful model has been spotted numerous times texting behind the wheel, often times putting herself in very dangerous situations. In March of 2013, she was captured on camera texting, happily chatting with her passenger pals all while trying to control the car as she was driving down Malibu’s narrow roads. Witnesses caught her driving in a similar fashion just several months prior. Her driving was alarming to the point they thought she was intoxicated. Yikes, Kendall! Thankfully, no one was hurt.
4. Kevin Connolly
Entourage star Kevin Connolly could not help but reach for his cell late one night in West Hollywood, CA according to RadarOnline. Maybe he was unaware of the dangers associated with this form of distraction? Texting while driving is already dangerous but it’s even more hazardous if you choose to text behind the wheel at night where you need to primarily focus on the road. There hasn’t been any other reports of him committing the act again so maybe he realized that it was a horrible mistake.
3. Mark Zuckerberg
According to the DailyMail, Mark Zuckerberg was reportedly on his way to work one morning when he was photographed by none other than his fellow social media creator Ben Schaechter, using the new Jelly app to share the photo online. Schaechter reportedly posted the photo with the caption “Mark Zuckerburg text and driving. How do you respond”. While the Facebook creator may not have been charged with anything, he has definitely been found guilty in the court of public opinion.
Yes, not even the Queen Bey herself is above any law. According to reports, Beyonce was busted by a New York City police officer for violating the cell phone ban. The cop had no clue who she was. While he may not be up to date with the latest music news, he certainly upholds the law. He sent her off with a ticket that cost more than $100, which shouldn’t be too big a problem for the mega pop star. The singer claimed she had just gotten her licence and was oblivious about the new rule. Even her lovely charm could not get her out of this one. Tough luck Bey! We still love you Beyonce.
1. David Beckham
David Beckham, retired soccer player, husband of the sexy Victoria Beckham and father of three was coming home when he was seen pulling out his cell to send a message or two as he drove his Cadillac Escalade on the freeway as reported by The Daily Mail. Maybe he was checking in with the family, letting them know he was on his way home? That is understandable. It is completely fine to call or text your family that you will be home by 5:00 pm – but when you are not on the road! This is disappointing coming from the British football star because the ban on cell phone use exists in Britain as it does in the U.S. This is absolutely no excuse. We love David Beckham but you should have known better than anyone on this list.
