It is never easy to accept a suicide note, especially when it is written by someone whose presence has had an impact on so many people. Suicide in itself is considered a selfish act, especially because those who commit suicide will in most cases take the easier way out, leaving the rest to deal with their departure in whichever way they find best.
Suicide leaves a lot of unanswered questions, and those who are left behind never know what to do, or how to begin the healing process. One of the biggest questions that the bereaved are left with, is to wonder if there was something they could have done to prevent the individual from committing suicide, if there was something that they were doing wrong in their lives that pushed their loved ones to such drastic measures.
While we have a lot of time to think about all these questions, unfortunately suicide takes place so quickly. In a matter of seconds, someone might be gone, so fast that there is nothing you can do to even change their minds. The following are some suicide notes that were left behind by celebrities, with a touching parting shot.
10. Pennsylvania State Treasurer R. Budd Dwyer
As a public office holder, what do you do when you have been implicated in cases of abuse of office, and to be precise, bribery? Well, some people take the ethical road and face up to their crimes, serve their time and life goes on. Not Budd Dwyer. Looking at up to 55 years in prison and $300,000 in fines, this was too much for him to bear. He called a press conference, which everyone thought was to announce his resignation, but turned out to be his suicide stage. His parting shot before pulling the trigger in his mouth was, “Please leave the room if this will affect you!”
9. Clara Blandick, American Actress
The actor had been going through a rough time with her health; going partially blind and struggling with arthritis. On the fateful day in 1962, she came home from Palm Sunday Mass, organized her room, laid out her house properly, put on a fine dress, lied down on a couch and overdosed on sleeping pills, covering her head in a plastic bag. Having done that, she left the following parting shot: “I am now about to make the great adventure. I cannot endure this agonizing pain any longer…Neither can I face the impending blindness. I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen.”
8. Leslie Cheung Kwok-wing
Depression took its toll on Leslie, just as it has always done to a lot of high profile celebrities and performers. The pressure of performing to meet the expectations of a lot of people can really crush a celebrity. He was posthumously voted in the CNN Top 5 most iconic musicians of all time, only coming third after Michael Jackson and The Beatles. Before leaping 24 floors to his death, he left a suicide note, thanking his family and friends for being there for him. He also cited that he was severely depressed, starting his suicide note with “Depression!…In my life I did nothing bad. Why does it have to be like this?”
7. Kurt Cobain
Rockers probably are more familiar with Kurt Cobain; American singer, musician, songwriter and founder of the rock group Nirvana. In his final note, he wrote a letter to his imaginary childhood friend Boddah. At the end he spared a few lines for his daughter; “Frances and Courtney, I’ll be at your altar. Please keep going Courtney, for Frances. For her life, which will be so much happier without me. I love you, I love you!” Interestingly enough people have always been torn between whether he committed suicide, or his wife killed him. Either way, the pressure got to him, and he could not handle it anymore.
6. Nancy Motes (Julia Roberts’ half-sister)
There is nothing worse than losing a part of your family or friends to suicide. There are lots of memories that will disturb you, most importantly why they decided to go out in that particular fashion. However, it gets worse when in their suicide note, they blame you for all their troubles. They pretty much put you in the red for being the main reason for the suicide. This was the fate that Julia Roberts’ sister cast on her in her final moment. Such are accusations that send a normal person into rigorous therapy sessions, especially when you are in the limelight like Julia constantly is.
5. Aaron Hillel Swartz
Thanks to the internet these days, everyone has a way to express themselves in a special way that only they and those who follow them can understand. People use blogs to share a part of their lives with those who follow them, and those who are keen to know more about their lives. For this Jewish American computer programmer (Founder of Reddit), his blog was the perfect place for him to write his suicide note, so that he could share his story with the rest of the world. His was in the form of a short story, published and read widely by the entire world.
4. Wendy O. Williams
The lead singer for the Plasmatics was undergoing a difficult time, and chose to take her life instead. However, in her suicide note, she wrote something which most psychiatrists and common sense can allude to be true. She wrote: “I don’t believe that people should take their own lives without deep and thoughtful reflection over a period of time.” This was proof that she had been thinking about this for quite some time. Perhaps if someone would have been keen enough and noticed how much she was struggling, she would have been able to get help, but in most cases, no one ever knows until that fateful moment.
3. George Eastman
Eastman is a name that should ring a bell in the minds of anyone who is in the photography industry. This is because it was he who conceived the Eastman Kodak Company. Other than that, without him the roll film would never have been as popular as it has been through the ages, and is to date. Indeed for innovators like Eastman, there comes a time when you feel as though you have achieved all you could achieve. To this end, his final note was brief and to the point; “To my friends: My work is done. Why wait?”
2. Hart Crane
American poet Hart Crane found the prefect stage to end his life, a stage from where he would never come back, and his body never to be found. While on a cruise ship, the ambitious writer felt he had already had enough of life and the only way was to end it. Being the poet that he was, he chose the perfect opportunity for his final act, and his audience – everyone who was on the cruise. His last words were “Goodbye Everybody!” One thing that we know for sure is that everyone who was on the Orizaba cruise ship never forgot about that moment.
1. Robin Williams
There are reports that Robin Williams left a series of suicide notes, which perhaps might come to light sometime in the future. For someone as accomplished as he was in life, there was a lot of sadness all over the world when news broke out of his death. However, perhaps the person who felt this the worst was his daughter Zelda Rae, to whom he wished a happy birthday before he took his life. His final tweet: “#tbt and Happy Birthday to Ms. Zelda Rae Williams! Quarter of a century old today but always my baby girl. Happy Birthday @zeldawilliams Love you!”
