As we all know, the most common type of medication taken today are prescription drugs, meaning that they are drugs that are prescribed to us by our doctor in order to cure or treat an illness. Most of the time, prescription drugs work exactly as they are supposed to. However, this does not always mean that side effects won’t develop. Simply read the labeling on all medication, and you’ll find a section dedicated to the potential side effects of that medicine.
Side effects are defined as an occurrence that can happen as the result of taking medicine, meaning that they can either be a positive thing or a negative thing. Whether they are positive or negative, largely depends on the drug that you are taking. For instance, maybe a drug has the side effect of making you have the urge to go to sleep. Is getting more sleep a good thing or a bad thing under your circumstances? Regardless, your doctors should inform you of the common side effects for the medicine that they will be prescribing you. Usually, the negative side effects won’t be any worse than throwing up, feeling sleepy, or having an allergic reaction to the medicine. But other times, the negative side effects can become much worse than that…and much more disturbing in the process.
We are going to outline and discuss some fairly common prescription drugs and medicine, and the wild and disturbing side effects that can come along with them. Most of these side effects were discovered during research from the Food and Drug Administration. But others were discovered by the patients who had to report them. Here are the top ten most disturbing medication side effects ever.
10. Mirapex – Short Term Amnesia
You may not believe it, but some prescription drugs can cause amnesia. One such example of a prescription drug that has been known to do so is Mirapex, which was discovered in 1997 as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease. Finding a treatment or even a cure for Parkinson’s disease is no doubt a very good cause, but unfortunately, it appears that Mirapex could do more harm than good. The most notable side effects of Mirapex is amnesia, as numerous patients have reported short term memory loss, such as not remembering what happened the previous day. But patients who quit taking Mirapex reported to be relieved of the problems.
9. Alli – Severe Gas
Alli is a weight loss medicine that treats you by preventing your body from absorbing anymore fat. This means that when you eat food with high volumes of fat, Alli will prevent your body from absorbing and subsequently digesting that fat. But a major side effect of Alli is suffering from extreme constipation and gas, and being in pain as a result of it. Feeling bloated as a side effect is one thing, but being in pain from it is certainly another.
8. Allegra – Back Pain
Allegra is one of the most well known prescribed medicines out there, and helps you by relieving allergic symptoms like coughing, sneezing and itching. But a major side effect of Allegra is contrary to what it’s supposed to do; it can cause severe back pain instead. Basically, you’re trying to get over a bad cold by taking Allegra, only to discover that your health may be in worse condition afterward.
7. Requip – The Urge To Gamble
Requip is usually prescribed as medication to help patients who were diagnosed with Parkinsons. It is undoubtedly one of the most unusual medications listed here, as many patients who have taken it have reported an increased urge to gamble. That sounds disturbing, doesn’t it? Well it’s true, according to studies, along with the usual side effects of dizziness, agitation and insomnia, Requip would also contribute to increased gambling and sexual urges. But who knows, maybe the next time you decide to visit Las Vegas or Atlantic City, you’ll want to give Requip a shot.
6. Vasotec – Hurting Your Five Senses
Vasotec is prescribed in order to help people who have high levels of blood pressure and congestive heart failure. But a side effect of Vasotec is that it can hurt all five of your senses. People who have taken Vasotec have reported losing their sense of smell and taste over time, developing a ringing sensation in their ears, and suffering from blurred vision.
5. Lariam – Frightening Hallucinations
Lariam was developed by the Institute of Research to prevent outbreaks of malaria in the United States military. It was subsequently tested and handed out as standard medical equipment to all soldiers. But recently, Lariam was pulled from the medical kits of all the troops, because many soldiers had reported suffering serious side effects, including frightening hallucinations that led to violent psychological behavior, shortly after taking the drug. Lariam was found to be even worse for soldiers who had a history of depression and psychosis.
4. Chantix – Nightmares
Every single one of us has endured nightmares at some point (or night) in our lives. A common side effect of prescription drugs is to dream and/or sleepwalk, but a common side effect of Chantix is for the patient to suffer from nightmares. Chantix was developed as a treatment to help smokers quit their addiction. Smoking is a bad habit that every person should overcome, but you’ll seriously have to ask yourself if taking Chantix is the right route for you to take, especially if the thought of suffering from repeated nightmares isn’t exactly your cup of tea.
3. Xenical – Painful Bowel Movements
Xenical is very similar to Alli and is sold over the counter, designed to help people not absorb fat and thus, decrease their calorie intake. But people have reported the side effects of Xenical to be even worse than the side effects of Alli, with many patients reporting that they suffered extreme pain in their bowels and had an urgent need to release gas almost nonstop, without any ability to control it. Now look, embarking on a journey to lose weight is a great thing to do in order to become more healthy, but it’s probably not something you’ll be interested in, if all you’re going to do is embarrass yourself in front of people all day. You might want to give other medications more consideration, or even better, hit up the gym.
2. Plavix – Uncontrollable Vomit
Plavix has been shown to help protect against the risk of suffering from a stroke or heart attack, by preventing the platelets in your blood from forming clots. So far, so good? Well, a common side effect of Plavix is that you can literally suffer from uncontrollable vomit. Some people have reported that they have not suffered from this side effect, and Plavix has announced that it varies by person and that their medication is therefore, not for everyone. In addition to uncontrollable vomiting, you can also suffer from severe gut and stomach pains. If you display any of these side effects, you would be wise to stop taking Plavix as soon as possible.
1. Accutane Medicine – Bone Fractures
There are lots of different medicines and drugs out there to help cope with acne. Acne medicine is a major part of the medicine business, with the most common types of medications and treatments being wipes and ointments. For most people, these forms of medicines work just fine, but for those that it doesn’t, they commonly resort to Accutane. While Accutane medicine is effective at getting rid of acne, a major side effect is bone fractures. Yes, bone fractures. It can be much easier to sustain a bone fracture if you take Accutane; this doesn’t mean that you will fracture a bone on the spot while watching TV, but it does mean that if you injure yourself, you will be more likely to hurt yourself.
