Imagine the world without your favorite celebrity. Hard to picture, right? Every day, much like regular people, celebrities are faced with scenarios that could end in their untimely death. They could be sleeping in their bed or swimming in a pool; no matter where they are, when it’s their time to go, there’s no arguing.
I’m sure you’ve heard your share of freak stories, stories in which people were so close to dying that they even went as far as accepting their fate, only to be pushed away from the light and back on our planet called Earth. Maybe life has a funny way of showing people that it should not be taken for granted.
Some actors have had near death experiences while filming for a movie; others have seen their lives flash before their eyes even before they got the chance to become famous.
Here’s a list of 10 actors who almost lost their lives in strange ways, but thankfully did not.
10. George Clooney
Considered one of the most charming male celebrities, George Clooney is a name that can be recognized worldwide in almost any age group. He is the type of actor that knows no boundaries; he can easily be your grandmothers, mothers or even sisters lifelong crush. But what if I told you that 11 years ago, we almost lost this great actor? Seems impossible right? How can a man that has acted in so many action scenes, possibly die in real life? Well it’s easy, he’s human and when pushed will fall like any other. In 2005, on the set of Syriana, Clooney cracked his head open during a “torture scene.” This incident caused fluid to leak out of Clooney’s spine and put his well-being at risk. Although Clooney recovered, he is still plagued with constant migraines that will never go away. Luckily for us, Clooney has not let this affect his work in any way and continues to be the amazing actor we all know and love.
9. Joaquin Phoenix
The Walk the Line star, Joaquin Phoenix, has gotten us used to the idea of his demise by choosing to play in films that he either overdoses or burns alive in. So right off the bat it isn’t too hard to come to terms with the fact that Joaquin Phoenix has had a close brush with death. Back in 2006, Phoenix had the misfortune to be driving a car that experienced break failure. Luckily for Pheonix, German director Werner Herzog was driving behind him and saw the entire accident! Herzog quickly responded and aided in the saving of the great Joaquin Pheonix. When Herzog approached the scene of the accident, he was surprised to find that it was Pheonix trapped inside the vehicle and even more shocked to see a cigarette dangling from his lips as he searched for his lighter. What Pheonix did not know is that there was a fuel leak, and lighting his cigarette could have caused an explosion. So in other words; Herzog saved his life twice.
8. Gerard Butler
Back in 2011, Gerard Butler experienced a terrifying incident while filming the movie Chasing Mavericks. The actor was cast as a surfer and well, had to play the part so he surfed on camera for numerous takes. On this scary day, 5 years ago, the actor wiped out on his surfboard and was kept underwater for over a minute. During this painful minute, Butler remembers being extremely afraid and witnessing inner flashbacks. After his near-death experience, Butler got back on his feet and finished filming this movie, but not without a new devout respect for surfers. Filming this movie was no doubt one of the biggest stepping stones in his life. It proved to him that even though you have the physique to surf that does not mean that you are well prepared for what Mother Nature will throw your way. Butler may have escaped with his life, but he also escaped with the knowledge to never ever take anything for granted.
7. Charlize Theron
Ah, the beautiful Charlize Theron. She has been America’s diamond since she started her career in acting and has not stopped shining since. This actress came close to losing her life or even worse, becoming a vegetable, while filming the movie Aeon Flux. During the beginning of the shoot, Theron broke her neck while doing a back handspring. Theron was hospitalized for 5 days in Berlin, later discovering that she had also obtained a herniated disk in her vertebrate. But Theron was determined to finish filming on schedule, and 6 weeks later was back to business. I think that we can all agree that this makes Theron very special; it takes a strong person to pet the dog that bite you in the first place. Theron returned on set, stronger than ever, and was able to accomplish everything that was asked of her despite her fears of injuring herself any further.
6. Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway has had a successful career as an actress, and she isn’t done yet. The Les Miserables actress came close to an abrupt end while vacationing in Hawaii with husband Adam Shulman. While taking a dip in the ocean, it appears Hathaway might have swum out a little too far, and the beloved actress found herself in the midst of a deadly riptide. All alone and absolutely terrified, Hathaway fought for her life and yelled out for help, attracting the attention of a nearby surfer. The unknown man risked his own life by swimming out to save her, and if not for him, Hathaway might not be alive today. Hathaway might never know the name of her saviour, but not all heroes wear capes or stick around for recognition. After she was brought back to shore and reunited with her husband, the pair was seen holding each other and simply embracing life.
5. Ryan Reynolds
When Ryan Reynolds was only 17 years old, he decided to go skydiving, a decision that nearly ended his life. Shortly after jumping from the plane, Reynolds felt terror settle in when his primary parachute failed to launch. Reynolds says ‘’ that was the point when my whole world collapsed and the panic attack kicked in’’ Shortly after, Reynolds took over his fear and launched his second parachute and landed safely on the ground. This experience has caused Reynolds to be terrified of flying, but you wouldn’t be able to tell that when watching his new movie Deadpool. Although Reynolds might appear fearless he certainly is not and is still turned off from the idea of jumping out of a plane with a backpack as wings. To top it all off, Reynolds was later informed that his instructor died from a skydiving malfunction the following year, and with that information Reynolds vowed to never take part in the sport again.
4. Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore had a close encounter with death back when she was engaged to Tom Green and no, it wasn’t because she realized she was about to marry Tom Green. Barrymore was woken up by her dog Flossie clawing at her bedroom door and barking relentlessly. It seems her faithful pup was trying to warn her about something and did not care that it was 3:30 in the morning. Barrymore and Green managed to escape the fire unharmed thanks to their life saving dog Flossie. Unfortunately for Barrymore, her house suffered damages estimated at $700,000, but luckily for her, her life was not lost that morning. Some people say that everything happens for a reason, and in this case maybe almost dying was what Barrymore needed in order to realise she was about to marry a nincompoop. Either way, whatever her motives were, Barrymore remains one of the most awesome people in showbiz.
3. Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp refers to his brush with death as a ‘’bonding experience’’ shared between himself and director Bruce Robinson. While filming The Rum Diary, Depp and Robinson took a plane together and were surprised to hear the plane’s engine shut down while in midair. They looked at each other, thought, “is this it?’’ and as shocked and terrified as they were, the pair began to go through a fit of hysterical laughter. The laughter seemed endless in that moment and right when they had accepted their death, the plane’s engine sprung to life. Life has a funny way of reminding us we should always be grateful and that even though you’re rich enough to buy yourself a new life, you can only have the one that was given to you. Depp might have learned this lesson the hard way, but he emerged from the airplane with a new sense of gratitude and a stomach ache from laughing like a hyena.
2. Isla Fisher
If you’ve seen the movie Now You See Me, then surely you are familiar with the water tank scene. In this scene, Isla Fisher plays the role of Henly Reeves, a magician who has immersed herself in a water tank while chained. While Fisher was filming this stunt, her life took a drastic turn as she began to run out of breath. Unknowingly the cast stood by watching her drown while thinking ‘’ Wow, what an amazing actress’’. Fisher stated on Chelsea Lately that she was actually drowning and was held under water for nearly 3 whole minutes. Why the directors left her underwater for 3 minutes is still a little perturbing, maybe they thought she was part fish or that redheads can hold their breath for an insanely long amount of time? The directors should have known that when something seems too good to be true, more often than not, it is.
1. Diane Kruger
I think Diane Kruger would agree that when working with Quentin Tarantino you have to be prepared to go all the way. While filming Inglourious Basterds, Kruger was strangled in real life, and not by the actor doing the strangling in the movie. It appears that Tarantino did not think Christoph Waltz would strangle Kruger sufficiently and proposed to take matters in his own hands. If you want something done right, you got to do it yourself, right? In the movie it is actually Tarantino’s hands you see in the close up, as he insisted that she be strangled for real. All in all it must have been quite the nerve wracking day for Kruger, who knew going into it, that she would be strangled without mercy legally. Despite her fears, she carried out the scene, and now laughs about it openly saying “It was an interesting day at the office.”
