Break-ups are never easy and they’re even more difficult when you’re a celebrity in the limelight. Not only do you have to deal with the paparazzi and endless articles written about what apparently went wrong, but you also have to deal with fans feeling the pain as well. For whatever reason, when celebrities break up, us normal people tend to feel a sense of loss as well, especially if it was a couple that seemed to be happily married or had been together for a decade or so (which, by Hollywood’s standards, is basically a lifetime).
With every year that passes, we watch our favorite celebrities start dating, get married, have babies and, yes, break up. The break-ups come in all shapes and sizes. Some come with rumors of infidelity. Others, like the whole Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie-Jennifer Aniston ordeal, come with pretty much confirmed infidelity stories, even if Brad maintains that he didn’t hook up with Angie until after the divorce. We’ve all seen Mr. and Mrs. Smith and it was hot. Whatever the case may be, it’s sad that another one of your favorite stars is only able to find love in the movies in which they star rather then in real life.
2015 proved to be a rough year for relationships of all shapes and sizes. Some of the break ups came from married couples with children, long-term relationships with children, or long-term relationships without children. Whatever the case may be, we were really rooting for these ten relationships to work but sadly, they did not:
10. Kourtney Kardashian & Scott Disick
This may be the least surprising split of the year. Kourney Kardashian, 36, and Scott Disick, 32, have had many ups and downs in their relationship, all well documented on Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Most of the downs resulted from Disick’s partying and playboy behavior. It recently seemed that Disick had left his wayward ways in the past in order to finally commit to their relationship and to embrace being a great father to their three children. Since their split, Disick has taken to social media and posted some not so cryptic Instagram captions that lead people to think he perhaps misses Kourtney.
9. Kaley Cuoco & Ryan Sweeting
After only 21 months of marriage, Kaley Cuoco, star of Big Bang Theory, and Ryan Sweeting, a tennis pro, announced their divorce. The pair, who met on a blind date, had a whirlwind romance and wed after only six months of dating so the relationship may have been lacking a stable foundation. Cuoco has even stated that Sweeting moved in the day after their first date. Even with a prenuptial agreement in place, Cuoco could be forced to pay spousal support to Sweeting, who makes considerably less than Cuoco, currently tied with Sofia Vergara as the highest paid actress on television.
8. Megan Fox & Brian Austin Green
Men everywhere must be rejoicing over this separation because, well, it’s Megan Fox. The actress filed for divorce from husband Brian Austin Green, of Beverly Hills 90210 fame, this year. The pair had been married for five years and have two children together, Noah Shannon, 3, and Bodhi Ransom, 18 months. Though Fox may have taken a step back in the past few years in regards to her acting career, she will be taking over the starring role on New Girl while Zooey Deschanel is on maternity leave. There’s nothing like diving back into work to get your mind off your divorce.
7. Blake Shelton & Miranda Lambert
Blake Shelton, 39, and Miranda Lambert, 32, were married for a lovely four years. They were country music’s sweethearts but 2015 was the year in which that changed. The pair announced their divorce, but until recently had kept their lips sealed as to the specific reasons that lead to the divorce. It has since been reported that the pair split because Shelton wanted to start a family and Lambert wasn’t too sold on the idea of starting a family right now. Luckily for Shelton, he rebounded with someone who already has three children and she just so happens to be one half of the next couple on this list …
6. Gwen Stefani & Gavin Rossdale
The couple that was formally rock’s golden couple, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, called it quits this year after 13 years of marriage. The couple have three children together: Kingston (9 years old), Zuma (7 years old), and Apollo (20 months old). Since the split, Stefani has turned to her art as a form of therapy. She recently told Ryan Seacrest that within eight weeks she wrote a whooping nineteen songs. At least when you’re a famous singer, you can turn your heartache into success. She has since started dating Shelton. The pair worked together while both being coaches on The Voice.
5. Emma Stone & Andrew Garfield
The odds were admittedly against this young, hot Hollywood couple, but it would have been very cool if it has actually worked out. The pair met on the set of The Amazing Spider-Man and apparently hit it off. The adorable couple would do things like hold up signs up to raise awareness for charities when paparazzi snapped their picture. How could you not love them? Supposedly, their busy schedules made this romance difficult and after four years, the couple officially split. Both young actors are in demand, with Andrew Garfield starring in an upcoming Martin Scorsese film and Emma Stone coming off of her Oscar nomination for Birdman. Something tells us that these two will be just fine post-break-up.
4. Patrick Dempsey & Jillian Fink
Fans of Patrick Dempsey have much to mourn this year. His character, Derek Shepherd, was killed off on Grey’s Anatomy, leaving Meredith Grey, his TV wife, a widow. In real life, Dempsey and Jillian Fink’s divorce was also announced this year, after 16 years of marriage. The pair have three children together. Unfortunately for Dempsey, it has been reported that the couple doesn’t have a prenuptial agreement, meaning Fink, a makeup artist and hairstylist, may be taking a chuck of his $40 million net worth with her when she goes. As of right now, the estranged couple is supposedly trying to work through it but estranged they still are.
3. Amy Poehler & Nick Kroll
While they were only together for two years, Amy Poehler and Nick Kroll‘s split is sad mostly because they are both hilarious. How can two funny people not work it out? Well, it seems that their busy schedules got in the way of romance. Considering how busy both of them are with work and the fact that Poehler has two children to raise, one can image how it might be difficult to squeeze in some time for the relationship. Of course, there is one person that Poehler can never ever ever break up with, as it will devastate America: Tina Fey. As long as their friendship lives on, we can all breathe easy.
2. Ben Affleck & Jennifer Garner
Say it ain’t so. This was the split that made everyone in America question if love even existed because if Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner can’t make it work, can anyone? In Hollywood, it seems that that answer is no, no one can make it work. The couple had only just celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary days before the split was announced. The couple released a joint statement in which they asked for privacy for their children, who they are dedicated to co-parenting together. The parents of three fell in love on the set of Daredevil, which wasn’t not met with much critical acclaim but at least it brought the world this seemingly perfect couple. It is rumored that Ben’s affair with their nanny was one of the causes of the divorce. How could you, Ben?
1. Jon Hamm & Jennifer Westfeldt
The actor known for his role as Don Draper in Mad Men (and for being an overall stud) Jon Hamm had been with his girlfriend Jennifer Westfeldt, actress and screenwriter, for a whooping 18 years. Considering that this is a Hollywood relationship, that’s a pretty impressive. Unfortunately, the couple split this year. It is reported that Westfeldt often dealt with Hamm’s party boy lifestyle and at times, she often took on a more mother-like role than the role of a girlfriend. In February, Hamm checked into rehab for alcohol abuse, which may have shifted the dynamic of their relationship. Hamm and Westfeldt announced their split in September, but Hamm still made sure to thank Westfeldt during his Emmy acceptance speech because he’s Jon Hamm and he’s classy.
