Ideally, couples who split should try their best to co-parent as a team. Countless studies have proven that children have more difficulty when coming from a broken home, so it’s the responsibility of the parents to make this transition as smooth as possible. However, many couples find it difficult to co-parent both in and out of the celebrity world.
From cheating scandals that push the drama onto the kids to petty arguments that put the kids in the middle, it seems like celebrities are just like regular people when it comes to figuring out how to make things work after a split.
Numerous dramas involving children tend to make it into tabloid headlines, regardless of the kids’ age. Recently, Madonna went on stage to unleash all her grievances with ex-husband Guy Ritchie, with videos that popped up on YouTube. Rocco is already 15 years old, but that doesn’t stop the baby drama from continuing to play out in the tabloids. While Madonna has full custody, Rocco made the decision to fly across the pond so that he could live with his father instead. As huge slap in the face to Madonna’s parenting skills, Guy Ritchie didn’t do anything to squelch the problem, and instead tried to get the custody ruling overturned in his favor.
And they’re not the only celebrity couple that’s dealing with drama involving their kids- but many of them start at a much earlier age. Check out our list of 10 celebrities with the biggest baby drama, and see how their private issues have made it onto the public stage.
10. Antonio Cromartie
It isn’t exactly a new concept for a sports celebrity to have children with multiple different women, but Antonio Cromartie has taken it to another level. With 12 kids and eight different baby mamas scattered over six states, it doesn’t get much sloppier than that. Cromartie signed with the Jets for a year, and walked away with $7 million. His wife is a successful lawyer, and Cromartie had a vasectomy (since he probably has enough kids). However, vasectomies are not 100 percent fool-proof and his wife is now pregnant – with twins! He’s allegedly paying $336,000 in child support, which is more than many Americans with full-time jobs make annually.
9. Britney Spears
During a time when Britney Spears was in a highly publicized downward spiral, there was a court order for her to relinquish custody of her children to her ex-husband Kevin Federline. While there was a time when Kevin Federline seemed like the bad boy that was trying to ruin this beloved pop star, the tables definitely turned to show Federline as a more fit parent. In October 2007, the judge cited Britney’s drug and alcohol use as a reason why she should not be the sole caregiver for her two children- at the time they were 1 and 2 years old. Currently, they share custody of their children, but her mothering skills seem to be a constant headline in the tabloids. From different men coming in and out of her life to the snapshots paparazzi catch with her not wearing underwear while at a soccer game with her kids, the drama never really leaves this former Disney kid.
8. Sandra Bullock
While there are numerous celebrities that have been blindsided by the media, there are others that have managed to keep some of their private lives a secret. During the marriage between Sandra Bullock and Jesse James, the couple had secretly started the adoption process for baby Louis, without anyone in the media being the wiser. However, the scandal that revealed James had been cheating on Bullock with multiple women changed everything. Although the couple had already brought home baby Louis prior to the split, the adoption hadn’t been finalized yet. Once the divorce was finalized in June 2010, Bullock finalized the adoption alone and James publicly denounced this decision in an interview with In Depth With Graham Bensinger saying, “The hardest part of my divorce from Sandra Bullock was losing my son Louis.”
7. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon
Since Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon “officially” split in 2014, the public is surprised that the two still aren’t legally divorced. Cannon has been romantically linked to a slew of different women, and Carey is even engaged to billionaire James Packer. While the couple seems to be trying to co-parent amicably, there have been a number of issues brought up in the public eye that have people wondering when this drama will finally end. While some celebrities choose to be ultra confrontational, Mariah definitely enjoys some underhanded shade.
During an Italian vacation with then-boyfriend, James Packer, Mariah brought along her twins to join in on the fun – for Father’s Day. If it wasn’t bad enough for Mariah to bring her children around a man she hadn’t known for long, on a holiday that is meant to be spent with their father, she posted a picture on social media wishing Cannon a “Happy Father’s Day.” With underhanded shade like that, it’s no wonder Cannon is holding out for more money before signing off on the divorce.
Although the relationship between Ciara and Future came to an end, they continue to bring headlines due to the issues involving their son. Calling off their one-year engagement and splitting only weeks after the arrival of their first child, the case of “he-said she-said” seems like nothing will ever get resolved. In the meantime, Ciara has moved on with NFL player Russell Wilson, which has brought on a whole new debate.
Many people feel that it’s disrespectful for her to post social media pictures of the baby dressed in matching jerseys with Wilson, and it shows that she may be trying to replace Future as the father figure. Ciara recently sued Future for sole custody but lost and the two have back-and-forth lawsuits for defamation claims. It’s difficult to know which side to take on this case, since Future has three other children with each having a different mother, and he wasn’t even there when Ciara gave birth to their child.
5. Halle Berry
When Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry produced arguably the cutest little girl in the world, Nahla, people wondered whether or not they would be able to co-parent with ease once the couple split. They definitely got their answer when Gabriel showed up at Berry’s house to drop off Nahla after their time together. A fight broke out that left Gabriel scarred beyond recognition, due to Berry’s new beau Olivier Martinez. People were shocked by the graphic photos of Gabriel’s face, and weren’t a bit surprised when he ultimately sued (since he couldn’t exactly work as a model with that face). However, the drama over Nahla seems to constantly continue, whether it’s paparazzi following Nahla everywhere she goes or Berry’s inability to move to France due to the joint custody issue with Gabriel.
4. Kate and Jon Gosselin
When Jon and Kate Gosselin were first introduced to audiences through their TLC show, Jon & Kate Plus 8, audiences saw much more than just a family with a lot of children. Everything was scrutinized from the disrespectful manner in which Kate spoke to her husband to the way she wore her hair. Yet, fans stuck with the show because they were invested in all those adorable kids. So, when Jon’s extramarital affairs became highly publicized, people wondered how it would affect the family and the show. Not only did the two divorce, but the show was canceled to create the spinoff, Kate Plus 8.
Fans did not want to see Kate doing it on her own, especially when the story behind the story was played out in the tabloids. In an interview with Steve Harvey in January 2016, Jon Gosselin opened up about what it was like during that turbulent time. He claimed, “I lost all my money. I lost everything. The network sided with my ex-wife.” He later went on to say, “I haven’t seen all of my kids together in about three years. I only get what I get. Whoever comes down the driveway, that’s who I get.”
3. Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen is no stranger to controversy, but many of his issues in the public eye have to do with his sexual relationships. From the infamous relationships with adult industry workers to opening up about being HIV positive, it’s difficult to think of Sheen as a family man. While he may not be considered a family man in the conventional sense, he is the father of five children with three different women.
After his marriage to Denise Richards dissolved, he went on to have more children with Brooke Mueller. However, Brooke went through some issues with substance abuse and Richards wound up taking care of the children Mueller and Sheen had together, as well as her own. Recently, Sheen made the situation even messier by filing for a reduction of child support payments for both women. Claiming financial difficulties, Sheen requested a reduction from the $55,000 monthly child support he gives each of his exes.
2. Sherri Shepherd
As one of the favorite guest hosts from The View, Sherri Shepherd is known for her bubbly personality and comedic style. However, the public is starting to see a whole new side to this seemingly fun-loving celebrity. During her marriage to Lamar Sally, the couple used a surrogate to have a child using Lamar’s sperm. However, once the marriage dissolved, Shepherd did not recognize the baby as her own.
Multiple lawsuits brought the issue all the way to the Supreme Court, and it was concluded that since she was involved in the surrogate process that she was financially obligated to pay Lamar child support. She now pays around $4,000 in child support, but still refuses to claim the child and often refers to him as, “Lamar’s son.” Lamar gave an exclusive interview with Radar Online in February 2016 saying, “One day LJ is going to be old enough to look at this on the Internet and see how far that she has gone to not love him. It’s really just hurtful.”
1. Sofia Vergara
During the marriage of Sofia Vergara and Nick Loeb, the couple created two frozen embryos containing Loeb’s sperm and Vergara’s eggs. There was a specific contract drawn up stating, “any embryos created through the process could be brought to term only with both parties’ consent.” While this seems like an open-and-shut case, Loeb sued Vergara four months after the couple split, saying that the contract didn’t specify what exactly would happen to the embryos. After their divorce, Vergara wanted the embryos destroyed, and Loeb wanted to bring these embryos to life.
In May 2015, Loeb sued for custody of the embryos, and even wrote an op-ed piece entitled, “Our Frozen Embryos Have a Right to Live.” This case has sparked huge debate, since it brings up the fact that Vergara will be financially responsible for the embryos if they are brought to term. This is made even more complicated now that she is married to Joe Manganiello, and they are currently starting a family together.
