When it comes to looking at some of our favorite celebrities in Hollywood, it can be easy to be incredibly jealous. They seemingly have no shortage of amazing opportunities, endless flows of cash and are generally ridiculously good looking. Though, as many of these celebrities have found out, that big bank account can dwindle incredibly quickly when they pick up an addiction. The 10 celebrities on our list all landed themselves in rehab, but they all had a different path that took them there. While some battled several illegal substances, others battled a sex addiction and one person on here battled an eating disorder. Some people made it a one and done experience, while others seemingly want to punch off as many stamps on their ‘rehab’ card as they can.
It doesn’t help that when it comes to being a popular celebrity, you just happen to have every mistake magnified and talked about in the public eye. Do you do drugs? Cool (well, not really but…), it may cause you to miss some days of work. Not so good when your ‘day-job’ is being a rockstar, and as Keith Urban learned, now your rock tour gets delayed when you get to get your rehab on. You’ll also learn which music artist has now formed a band called “Yeast Infection”…seriously. You may also be shocked to find out who’s coming out with some new music this month, including whose collaborating with Pitbull?! Not sure if more Pitbull in the world is a good thing or not, but even if you hate him, at least you’ll know what music to avoid!
On top of explaining what these stars are doing now, I give some backstory on just why they are famous in society (still trying to figure you out, Kim Kardashian), what exactly it was that caused them to go to rehab, and where you can expect to see them in 2016.
10. Matthew Perry
Why Is He Famous? Matthew Perry came to prominence when he landed the lead role in the NBC Sitcom Friends. The series ran for 10 seasons, but Perry battled addiction issues which also led to some drastic weight fluctuations for his on-screen character.
Why Was He In Rehab? Perry completed a 28-Day Program in 1997 for an addiction to Vicodin. Perry has also openly battled vicodin, methadone, amphetamines and alcohol. He attended rehab in 2002 after suffering stomach pains while filming Serving Sara.
What Is He Doing Now? Perry is a spokesperson for the National Association of Drug Court Professionals. He also turned his former mansion into a sober living home. As a result of his efforts, he recieved a Champion of Recovery award in 2013.
He is currently on the sitcom The Odd Couple which was also co-created by Perry.
9. Selena Gomez
Why Is She Famous? Gomez is a talented singer and actress who made her debut at a young age on the television show, Barney and Friends. She has also appeared in the Disney series, Wizards of Waverly Place as well as forming her own band.
Why Was She In Rehab? In 2014, the singer spent two weeks at a center that helps young people who are battling emotional trauma and addiction. Her representative was very clear that the singer was not battling a substance abuse problem. While some blamed her ex boyfriend, Justin Bieber, for her downfall, there were at least 3 close friends who urged that Gomez seek help.
What Is She Doing Now? Gomez’s two weeks in rehab did not seem to deter her career. In 2015, she appeared in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, as well as appearing as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live in 2016.
Gomez has several films coming out in 2016, including the hilarious looking Neigbors 2: Sorority Rising
Who Is He? Steve-O is famous for his role in the Jackass films in which he can be seen doing a variety of stunts with his equally intelligent friends. He also had a prominent and public battle with a variety of addictions which caused him to spend some time in rehab.
Why Was He In Rehab? In March, 2008, Steve-O reached out to his friends in a letter that made them have the impression that he was suicidal. After consulting with Dr. Drew Pinsky, Johnny Knoxville and other friends convinced Steve-O to go to a hospital where he was held for 72 hours; which eventually became a 14-day stay after an attempted suicide.
Why Was He In Rehab? Steve-O is one of the best stories in Hollywood, as for all of his downfalls there is a huge positive. Steve-O is now clean and doing well! Knoxville opened up about his friends progress, stating “He’s taking to sobriety like he took to drugs and alcohol, I’m very proud of him. I think we’ll see him doing some stuff here really soon. As a matter of fact, I know we are”
Where Is He Doing Now? Steve-O has been all over the map, including a prominent relationship with Kat Von D. He also has his own Showtime special Steve-O: Guilty as Charged which is airing sometime in 2016. Since being in rehab, they have also made another Jackass film, which Steve-O proudly participated in sober.
7. David Duchovny
Who Is He? David is an actor who has most prominently starred in The X-Files for over 200 episodes. As well as this, David starred in the hit-series Californication which ran for over 80 episodes.
Why Was He In Rehab? Unlike some people on this list who battle substance addictions, David just really loved getting it on. He checked himself into rehab in 2008 for sex addiction. This, as you can imagine, also came alongside his rock relationship with fellow actress Tea Leoni, who David married in 1997.
The two officially divorced in 2014, but had been seperated since 2011. Ironically the character that David plays in Californication is addicted to sex!
What Is He Doing Now? David has appeared in 13 episodes for the TV series Aquarius. It is a crime show that is set in 1967, and was renewed for a second season which premiers on June 16th, 2016. There is no doubt that David has a great track record when it comes to successes, so perhaps we’ll be seeing a lot more of Aquarius in the near future.
Duchovny also released a music album, Hell or Highwater, in 2015.
6. Gerard Butler
Who Is He? Butler is an actor who made his big mark as the Phantom in Phantom of the Opera….Okay, people might know him as Leonidis for 300, but did you know he was Phantom?! Butler has also appeared in a variety of television shows.
Why Was He In Rehab? Butler entered rehab in 2012 after having an addiction to pain killers. Butler required the medication after he was injured in an incident while filming Chasing Mavericks. Butler stated that he claimed he was becoming too reliant on the medication. He did not seem to have any lasting implications after his stint in rehab.
What Is He Doing Now? Butler is continuing to act, with Geostorm and Hunter Killer both coming out in 2017. Geostorm also stars Ed Harris and details the story of a man who heads into space with the idea of preventing climate-controlling satellites from creating a devastating storm.
5. Charlie Sheen
Who Is He? You don’t know who Sheen is? I don’t believe you! Even if not for all the right reasons, Sheen has been one of the most prominent celebrities over the last few years. A film and television star, Sheen’s partying lifestyle is one of the big factors behind why he is known by people, and why he’s on the list.
Why Was He In Rehab? Sheen has entered rehab on several occassions, including a prominent example in January 2011 which caused a delay in the production of the show Two and a Half Men. This led to a feud between Sheen and the company and ultimately led to his dismissal from the program.
Prior to this, Sheen has also spent time in a rehab centre as a result of his addiction to substances, including cocaine.
Sheen was also sentenced to rehab in 2010 after pleading guilty to an assault charge
What Is He Doing Now? Charlie Sheen has also come out and stated that his is HIV positive. As a result, he appeared on The Dr. Oz Show and in an episode that was aired in 2016, he opened up about how he was off his meds and was instead receiving alternative treatment in Mexico.
Since the episode aired, Sheen has returned to taking his medicine. Sheen has also managed to reduce his monthly child support that he was ordered to pay from $55,000 to $10,000; so at least he’s able to put more cash in the partying fund!
4. Keith Urban
Who Is He? Keith is one of the most successful musical artists of all time. He’s had 37 singles, including 18 of which went to number one in it’s respective category. On top of this, he is married to Nicole Kidman! Keith has been producing music since 1990.
Why Was He In Rehab? Keith checked himself into rehab in 2007. Doing-so delayed the tour for his latest album at the time Love, Pain & The Whole Crazy Thing. While it was not explicitly clear as to why he re-entered rehab, he had previously battled an addiction to cocaine.
Urban spoke out about his addiction, stating “I deeply regret the hurt this has caused Nicole and the ones who love and support me. One can never let one’s guard down on recovery, and I’m afraid that I have.”
What Is He Doing Now? Keith Urban’s latest album comes out very recently, how recently? This very month! The album, Ripcord, releases on May 6th, 2016. The album will also include Carrie Underwood and…Pitbull? Whatever works for you Keith!
Keith will be going on tour starting on June 2nd, 2016, in order to promote the album. Let’s hope he’s able to stay clean!
3. Robert Downey Jr.
Who Is He? He’s Iron Man! RDJ is a tremendous actor who is one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood. He’s shown his versatility through a variety of roles, and is one of the most in-demand names of 2016. But he has far from a clean past.
Why Was He In Rehab? RDJ left the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison where he was being held on drug charges. Downey got arrested several times in his life, which often led to some stays in rehab. Thankfully he was able to get clean and was able to stay off drugs since July, 2003.
What Is He Doing Now? Well it may be cool to know that in December, 2015, he received a full and unconditional pardon from the Governor of California for all of his prior drug convictions. Truly a sign of a life turned around. Downey also reprised his role of Iron Man very recently in Captain America: Civil War.
Why Is She Famous? Ke$ha is a musician who signed with Kemosabe Records back in 2005. Despite this, it was not until 2009 when she finally got her big-break and has continued to find success with singles such as “Tik Tok”.
Kesha has released several albums, and sold more then 60 million records worldwide.
Why Was She In Rehab? One of the hardest parts of being famous would be having to feel like your public image is always under scrutiny. Kesha felt the pressure to an extreme degree, and battled an eating disorder that caused her to cancel concerts and landed her in a rehab center where she spent several months.
Where Is She Doing Now? Kesha stated that she was feeling healthy and ready to work on music when she left rehab back in 2014. In October of that year, she sued her producer, Dr. Luke, for alleged sexual assault and battery, sexual harassment, gender violence, emotional abuse and violation of California business practices. Unfortunately, the judge denied Kesha’s request to be released from Kemosabe Records.
In December 2015, she decided that the time was right for her to form a country-music band called Yeast Infection.
She also appeared at the 2016 Coachella Festival.
1. Britney Spears
Who Is She? Britney is one of the biggest pop-princesses of all time. She’s sold millions and millions of records, and was arguably the biggest female icon in the 90s. Britney also has experience acting, both in television and in motion pictures.
Why Was She In Rehab? Spears has one of the more interesting stories out of anyone on the list. In 2007, her aunt, who she was very close with, sadly passed away of ovarian cancer. The next month, Spears spent under a day at a drug rehabilitation facility. Not so bad, until you realize that the next day, Britney bought herself some clippers and shaved her head!!
Spears then was admitted to a variety of treatment facilities over the next few weeks.
What Is She Doing Now? Spears recently appeared on the cover for the 100th edition of V magazine, which is one of the biggest fashion magazines in the world. Britney stated in 2015 that she was currently recording her ninth studio album, and the lead single for it “Make me (Oooh)” is scheduled to release in May 2016.
