At the beginning of the year, nobody thinks, “I’m going to have a really crappy year.” Every new year is filled with hope and the promise of endless new opportunities. Many people make resolutions that they will keep and even more people make resolutions that they will not keep. A new year means a new you. Unfortunately for the people on this list, 2015 wasn’t their best year, to say the very least.
For some, it can seem like a certain year just spirals out of control. One small blunder happens and then another, and another, and another. For others, it may be one huge mishap that they pay for all year along. When you are a celebrity, you have the added pressure of experiencing your terrible year in front of the world, which can make the painful blunders even worse.
The 10 people on this list vary in star power and in what exactly ruined their 2015. One is a reality star who is slowly becoming less relevant, which is poison to a reality star’s career. Another is a news reporter who was caught in a lie. A few have gone or will be going to jail, and a few are dealing with divorce. As you can see, a lot can go wrong in a single year. Whatever may have ruined their year aside, to the 10 celebrities on this list, here’s looking at 2016:
10. Brian Williams
Getting caught in a lie is embarrassing for anyone, but it’s especially embarrassing for the head of the no. 1 evening news show. This year, NBC’s popular news anchor, Brian Williams, admitted that he exaggerated his position in a helicopter experience in Iraq. People were outraged, as it seemed that someone who was delivering them their nightly news was a liar. Williams was suspended for six months without pay. Now, 2015 wasn’t all bad for Brian Williams. He had the pleasure of watching his daughter, Allison Williams, one of the stars of Girls, marry Ricky Van Veen, the co-founder of CollegeHumor. The cherry on top: Tom Hanks officiated the ceremony.
9. Miranda Lambert
Miranda Lambert seemed to have it all. She was a successful country music star who was married to another successful country music star, Blake Shelton. She had it all until the pair divorced this year. For every celebrity, going through a divorce is difficult, but for Lambert, it is even more so. Shortly after their divorce, Shelton went public with his relationship with Gwen Stefani, a fellow coach on The Voice. Seeing photos of your ex-husband with his co-worker being romantic together so quickly after the divorce must hurt.
8. Emile Hirsch
Well, a stint in jail should qualify as a bad 2015, right? That’s exactly how Emile Hirsch’s 2015 went. After drunkenly attacking an executive from Paramount, Hirsch was facing up to five years for the felony and misdemeanor charges. He choose to take a plea, which required him to spend 15 days in jail. He will also have 90 days probation, a fine of $4,750 and 50 hours of community service. It’s safe to say that Emile Hirsch has seen better days.
7. Patrick Dempsey
Shonda Rhimes took much more heat than Patrick Dempsey for the death of Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy; a death that hit fans so hard they even started a petition to bring back McDreamy. His exiting the show didn’t make for his bad year, as it was personal problems that really rocked his 2015. Last year, Dempsey and his wife, Jillian Fink, filed for divorce. What makes this divorce worse than most other run of the mill celebrity divorces is that there was no pre-nup. Dempsey is worth a considerable $40 million while Jillian, a successful makeup artist, isn’t worth quite as much. It has been reported that the pair is now trying to make it work, perhaps because Dempsey realized how much he could lose.
6. Kim Kardashian West
2015 wasn’t all bad for Kim Kardahian West, who just welcomed her son, Saint West, with husband Kanye West. However, 2015 may be looked back to as the year when Kim started to become irrelevant. It’s not that people don’t talk about her on a daily basis anymore, because her naming her son “Saint” was definitely water cooler talk. 2015 will be known was the year when Kendall Jenner, Kim’s younger sister, dethroned her title of Instagram’s Most Liked Picture. No worries, though. Kim was still the most followed person on Instagram; at least until Taylor Swift took that title from her as well. On top of all of that, Kim’s book Selfish was released to disappointing book sales while Kylie’s lipstick line sold out in minutes. Perhaps, it’s time to step aside for the Jenner generation.
5. Adam Sandler
Adam Sandler had a few rough years when it comes to his film releases. The 90s were good to Sandler, solidifying him as a comedic star. With such hits as Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy and Big Daddy all coming out within a few years of each other, it seemed that anything Sandler touched did well at the box office, providing many iconic lines that would be repeated by adolescent boys everywhere. Fast forward to 2015 and that is not still the case. He released three films this year; The Cobbler has an 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and made a measly $24,000 in its limited box office release with a budget of $10 million. Pixels has a 17% Rotten Tomatoes score and raked in a reported $243 million worldwide, but only $78 million domestically on its budget of $88 million. Topping off Sandler’s losing streak this year is The Ridiculous Six, a film he did exclusively for Netflix. Netflix is known for the high quality content that they’ve been cranking out but unfortunately, this movie falls short, earning a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Better luck next year, Sandler.
4. Ben Affleck
As soon as Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner announced their divorce this year, people were all over Ben’s s**t. In everyone’s defense, Garner does come off as the angel, so blaming Affleck’s gambling and instability is the easiest route. Shortly after the divorce was announced, details started popping up about Affleck’s supposed affair with their nanny, Christine Ouzounian. Affleck and Garner seem to be mature about the situation and are trying to do what is best for their children. It seems like a far way to fall for Affleck after winning his second Oscar for Argo in 2013 and being in one of the hottest movies of 2014, Gone Girl.
3. Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen, 50 years old, announced to the world that he is HIV positive during a Today Show exclusive. Sheen had actually been diagnosed four years ago, but recently decided to tell the world. Apparently, while trying to keep his disease a secret, some of his closest inner circle extorted him for, he claimed, upwards of $10 million. Sheen finally spoke out about his illness to try to put these payouts to rest. Sheen remained positive during the interview, stating that he hopes this will help take the stigma away from HIV. Here’s to a better 2016 with no one blackmailing Charlie Sheen.
2. Robert Durst
2015 probably seemed like it might be promising for Robert Durst, subject of the HBO documentary The Jinx. That documentary didn’t pan out in the most favorable light for Durst, the subject for his connections to several murders. Durst has long denied having anything to do with the disappearance of Katie McCormack, his wife. The documentary became a sensation for the last scene, during which Durst uses the restroom and while off-screen, but still clipped with a microphone, he mutters, “Killed them all.” Bold move, Durst. Durst was arrested after the documentary for the murder of Susan Berman, his longtime confidante.
1. Subway Jared
Jared Fogle, better known to most people as Subway Jared, became famous years ago when he lost 245 lbs by eating Subway. Yeah, okay. That diet hasn’t really worked for the rest of the public, but you go, Jared. The reason his name has popped up in the news again is for something a little more taboo. He slept with 16 and 17-year-old minors, and while that may not qualify as pedophilia, Fogle has confessed to having fantasies about 12 and 13-year-old girls, leading him to be diagnosed with pedophilia (though he never actually touched a young child). On top of that, Fogle possessed over 600 images of child pornography. Fogle’s defense maintained that his rapid weight loss gave him a mental disorder. The judge didn’t buy that defense and sentenced Subway Jared to 15 years in prison. So, 2016 isn’t looking much brighter for Jared.
