There’s no point in beating around the bush – the whole world knows by now that *SPOILER!* Ellen DeGeneres has become the very proud owner of the world’s most retweeted tweet ever. A selfie of epic proportions from this year’s Oscars was, within an hour the most retweeted tweet in Twitter’s history!
You tweet and you get retweeted. Twitter is great for reaching a large retweet audience! If your tweet is retweeted by an account with 200 Twitter followers, you have a retweet audience of 200. If it is 1000, you have an audience of 1000. But you more than likely won’t have a multi-million retweeted tweet under your belt. Phew, that’s a lot of tweets!
The basic idea, for those who don’t use Twitter, is the following: A ‘tweet’ is a thought, an idea, a link, a joke – anything really – that you want to share with the world. You can attach a photo or a video and have 140 characters to type a message alongside it. It sounds a lot more complicated than it is! Then, a retweet is where you basically rebound a tweet to your own followers.
There is no doubt that Twitter has taken over the internet, so let’s take a look at the top five most retweeted tweets ever. All of the figures here are correct at the time of writing and are subject to change. Especially our number one tweet, courtesy of Ms DeGeneres – that one is growing and growing!
5. T.J. Lang: 93,000 retweets
Who better to open our top five than a hard core NFL player who has enough bravado to take to Twitter to criticize the league. Unfortunately, he used some profanity in his tweets which we have had to blur out, but… you get the picture. He used a naughty word to describe his outrage at the situation. What is said situation, you ask? Well, in a very tense “is it or is it not?” moment, there was a possible touchdown against Lang’s Green Bay Packers team versus the Seahawks in 2012. After some confusion, two referees signaled a touchdown and two signaled differently. After a review of the cameras, a touchdown was ruled. Had it not been ruled, Green Bay would have won, leaving Lang, understandably, fuming.
His tweet brings up the rear of our list, echoing his frustration with 93,000 retweets. An impressive feat really, considering his total following on Twitter is just 143,000! Lang trails behind the rest of our top five with followers but that doesn’t mean he didn’t earn his place on the list!
4. Floyd Mayweather: 108,000 retweets
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is an american boxer; famous for countless fights, a massive income, and the little matter of winning an Olympic medal back in Atlanta 1996. Back in 2012, just over two years ago, Mayweather sent a tweet out to Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao. This fellow is the world’s first and only eight division world champion. Yes, you don’t want to get on the wrong side of Manny Pacquiao! Of his 62 professional boxing matches, this Filipino legend has won 38 by knockout.
Mayweather clearly wanted to cement his status as America’s premier boxer so he challenged Pacquaio to a challenge via Twitter, earning himself 108,000 retweets in the process and a place in our top five! Their fight had been rumoured since 2010 but had failed to materialise. Known as the “Fight of the Century”, there was widespread disappointment when it didn’t happen. Still, though, Mayweather managed to nab the number 4 spot on our list – and was in the top 3 until very recently!
3. Justin Bieber: 288,000 retweets
Like him or loathe him, Bieber has set several records in his time on Twitter. He has been the most followed account, the most retweeted tweet and countless other Twit-titles. This tweet has a heart breaking story behind it.
Avalanna was a 6-year-old girl who had terminal cancer. She was a huge Bieber fan and it was her ambition to meet the teen sensation in person. Thankfully, Biebs picked up on the story and flew Avalanna and her family to meet him in New York on Valentine’s Day 2012. That day, he became her ‘husband’. She was at her happiest, getting a hug from her idol. Sadly, she passed away in September of that year.
Bieber’s message to Avalanna became the most retweeted tweet in the world at that point – currently with 288,000 RT’s. However, he was only to hold that record for two months…
2. Barack Obama: 782,000 retweets
Poor old Barack proudly held the top spot with his dignified celebratory tweet after being re-elected until the Academy Awards 2014. His simple, happy tweet was a picture of him, looking casual and in love in an embrace with his First Lady Michelle with the to-the-point caption “Four more years”. Obama supporters worldwide shared in this precious moment by rebounding the tweet to every corner of the world, leaving Justin Bieber in Barack’s dust, smashing the Canadian singer’s previous record!
At the time of writing, this heartfelt tweet was at just under 782,000 retweets. Not bad! From November 2012 until March 2014, the President of the United States held the prestigious title of the owner of the Most Retweeted Tweet in the World (who wouldn’t want that title?!) but nobody… NOBODY… could have predicted what was about to come…
1. Ellen DeGeneres: 3.1 million – and counting!
Yes, she did it! America’s favourite TV personality, who has been adopted by the world, went and practically broke Twitter at the Oscars! Ellen decided to post the ultimate selfie. With herself, Bradley Cooper (photographer), Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong’o, Brangelina, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey and many more in the picture, she achieved this feat. Makes you and your BFF taking a selfie in the bathroom look a bit sad, doesn’t it?
Despite making every selfie EVER pale in comparison, who could be mad at Ellen? Her quick wit throughout presenting the Oscars, her chat show, and her perfect marriage to Portia – this girl has it all! She tops the list of the most retweets in Twitter’s history. As the tweet is only hours old, it could blow even further out of proportion – so watch this space!
