The definition of an astronaut is quite literally, “a person who is trained to travel in a spacecraft.” While people traditionally think of astronauts as being the individuals that wear the full-on spacesuits and are employed by NASA, the entertainment industry has allowed for a much broader definition due to various sci-fi genres on the small screen and in film.
From futuristic spaceships to adventures on alternate planets, the entertainment industry has opened up all new doors in recognizing what constitutes an astronaut. There have been some space travelers that have been allowed to show off their natural sexiness onscreen, but not all of the portrayals have allowed for formfitting outfits like Star Trek’s Lieutenant Uhura. Yet they can certainly prove their sexiness outside of their full-on spacesuits when they’re seen on the red carpet.
Space travel and exploration has always been a favorite theme in the entertainment industry, but its popularity has seemed to increase in recent years. Whether Hollywood has taken its cues from the amazing advancements in technology in the world or audiences have just become even more obsessed with the idea of space travel, more and more actresses have made it into outer space on both the small screen and silver screen.
The entertainment industry hasn’t hesitated in putting some of their hottest actresses into space, with many looking just as sexy onscreen in their spacesuit than on the red carpet. Check out our list of the 14 hottest onscreen astronauts, and see how their sex appeal can be recognized even in space.
14. Dina Meyer
Dina Meyer is an actress that has starred in a number of roles on television and the big screen, including ABC’s Scoundrels and the Saw films. Yet, it was her role in the 1997 sci-fi film, Starship Troopers, that truly showed off her major sex appeal. Playing Private Dizzy “Diz” Flores, Meyer was in steady pursuit of the main character, John “Johnny” Rico. In one infamous scene, Meyer can be seen in an incredible shower scene where she can be seen topless. On top of the shower scene, Meyer can be seen throughout the film in formfitting uniforms and low plunging tank tops. A quite a bit of time has passed since she let it all hang out back in 1997, but she’s managed to keep it all together since then. From her blue/green eyes to her flowing curls, she exudes an exotic look that exudes incredible sex appeal onscreen.
13. Noomi Rapace
Swedish actress, Noomi Rapace, has been in a number of Swedish films, but was virtually unknown to American audiences until her portrayal in the 2011 film, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Starring alongside Charlize Theron in the Alien prequel, Prometheus, Rapace seemed to be on the right track to being the leading lady on the silver screen in the U.S. While the film ended with Rapace’s character, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw, being the sole survivor (unless you count the disembodied head of Michael Fassbender’s robot character), the film’s director has announced that Rapace will not be reprising her role for the Prometheus sequel. Alien: Covenant will take place 10 years afterwards, where a new crew comes across the remains of the Prometheus ship. This is a definite letdown for fans of Rapace that were in hopes of seeing more of this futuristic astronaut doctor out to find out the secrets of Earth’s origin. While we may not be seeing her in the next Prometheus film, we can still look back at some of her ultra-hot moments in the first film.
12. Zooey Deschanel
Zooey Deschanel is a multitalented singer/songwriter and actress that has starred on both the small and big screen. Known mostly for her role in the television series, New Girl, Deschanel has created an ultra-likable onscreen persona. She starred as Trillian in the 2005 film, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and was the perfect counterpart to Martin Freeman’s British charm. While fans rooted for the love between Arthur Dent and Trillian, fans couldn’t blame her for falling for the line, “Do you wanna see my spaceship?” Not only did she get to see it, but she got to fly it. Audiences became instantly enthralled with the film adaptation, especially with all the cool gadgets and alien advancements. Who wouldn’t want a Nutri-Matic machine that produces drinks simply by analyzing a person’s taste buds to see what they might like? Zooey Deschanel’s character may have been dressed down a bit and more on the brainy side, but she still gave off the sex appeal that showed why both Arthur and Zaphod Beeblebrox fought to have her for their own.
11. Sandra Bullock
Sandra Bullock was previously known more as a fluff actress, with films like The Lake House and Miss Congeniality being her biggest claim to fame. Yet, things definitely changed after her Oscar-winning performance in 2009 in the hit film, The Blind Side. Starring alongside mega superstar, George Clooney in the 2013 film, Gravity, Bullock proved how high her star had risen. While Clooney’s character definitely enhanced the film, it was Bullock that was the true star. She donned an ultra short-haired look that audiences weren’t used to seeing in this Forces of Nature actress, but the shots including Bullock in nothing but a tank top and booty shorts seemed to even things out. Offscreen, Bullock seems to get even better-looking and absolutely dazzled on the red carpet at the following Oscar Awards. Not only did the film take home seven out of the 10 Academy Awards it was nominated for, but Bullock officially solidified herself as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actresses.
10. Jessica Steen
Canadian actress, Jessica Steen, was first suggested for her role in the 1998 film, Armageddon, due to her highly acclaimed performance in the syndicated series, Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer felt she would be the perfect actress to play the role of shuttle pilot, Jennifer Watts, and he was definitely right. While training the ill-behaved drilling crew, she gave off some serious sexy-teacher that made for eye-candy as well as some comic relief in this tear-jerker of a film. Sporting some piercing blue eyes along with her custom-fitted NASA uniform, audiences didn’t even mind her threatening to “kick you in the balls.” Even Steve Buscemi’s character didn’t seem to mind his NASA training after seeing how sexy his trainer was in Jessica Steen. Although many of her acting portrayals have seemed to dwindle in recent years, Steen can often be seen in support of various environmental and animal rights events pursuing some of her other passions outside of the entertainment industry.
9. Denise Richards
Although Denise Richards has seemed to slow down in her acting adventures in recent years, she was once thought of as one of Hollywood’s sexiest actresses. Before all of the Charlie Sheen drama and all the childcare responsibilities (for her children and for Sheen’s kids with Brooke Mueller), she starred as some of the most provocative characters on the big screen. From Wild Things to Empire, Richards has never shied away from showing off her good looks and incredible body on screen. Her portrayal in the 1997 film, Starship Troopers, was one of her earlier works, which was definitely seen in how youthful she looked in the film. As the only woman that could rival Dizzy in her affection for Rico, Richards’ Lt./Capt. Carmen Ibanez character was more than just a pretty face. As an accomplished officer moving up the ranks, Richards exuded sex appeal in her physicality as well as her mind.
8. Zoe Saldana
When Hollywood set out to make a film adaptation to the iconic Star Trek series, people wondered who would be cast as the infamous Lieutenant Uhura. The original television series gained instant Uhura fans since its first episode aired in 1966, so the decision to put Zoe Saldana in the coveted role was a bit controversial. While there were naysayers that felt she wouldn’t be able to live up to the role, she definitely proved she could fill those shoes with ease. In the scene where she got undressed in the room with her green-skinned roommate, Saldana can be seen in all her glory wearing super sexy white lingerie. This is a definite bonus for viewers, since not all of her space travel portrayals have enticed fans. Playing the green-skinned alien, Gamora, in the Guardians of the Galaxy film, she wasn’t exactly getting viewers hot and heavy onscreen (unless you’re into the whole green skin thing).
7. Andrea Riseborough
British actress, Andrea Riseborough, has starred in a number of stage performances and character portrayals onscreen, but it was when she was paired up with Tom Cruise that she really stood out in Hollywood. In the 2013 film, Oblivion, Riseborough played the role of Victoria “Vika” Olsen as Tom Cruise’s lover. Although she didn’t end up winning over Cruise’s heart by the end of the film, there were some pretty good shots of her swimming naked at one of Earth’s tower stations. The majority of the film focuses on Vika (or a version of Vika) being stationed the tower stations on Earth, there is a flashback scene to let viewers see her in all her space travel glory. Without spoiling the plot of the film, Cruise’s true love in the film ended up being his wife. While she may not have stolen his heart in the film, she definitely captivated audiences at the theater.
6. Halle Berry
There have been a number of A-list actors that have resorted to acting on television in recent years, especially since the success of such shows as HBO’s, True Detective. So, when it was announce that Halle Berry would be starring in a science fiction television drama, hopes were high for the Extant TV series. With a mega-superstar like Halle Berry and an executive producer like Steven Spielberg, it seemed like a winning combination for the two Oscar-winning stars. Berry played astronaut, Molly Woods, who inexplicably found herself pregnant after returning from a solo mission in outer space. The series was unfortunately canceled after two seasons, with CBS stating the storyline finished due to its exciting and fitting conclusion. While audiences may not be able to see Berry in her formfitting astronaut suit any longer, she is slated to reappear on CBS through a developing legal drama series where Berry will also take the role of executive producer.
5. Alice Eve
Alice Eve is a television and film actress that has never shied away from using her stellar good looks to land the most coveted roles. When in search of an actress to play the woman that would steal the heart of the world’s most eligible bachelor on Entourage, it was Alice Eve who inevitably won the role. When she was cast in the second installment of the Star Trek film series, Star Trek: Into Darkness, filmmakers made sure to throw in at least one lingerie scene of Eve’s character, Carol Marcus. Viewers got to see Eve strip down and reveal her ultra sexy black lingerie, and it was definitely a treat for the eyes. Since Star Trek is often thought of with a male dominated audience, it shouldn’t surprise fans that there would be a beautiful woman in a state of undress thrown into the film. Regardless that it didn’t actually have anything to do with the storyline, the film would have definitely lacked a little something without it.
4. Jessica Chastain
Jessica Chastain is an actress that has seemed to be praised for every role she has taken; whether it was her stellar performance for the 2013 film, Zero Dark Thirty, or her supporting actress role in The Help. She was nominated for an Academy Award for both of these roles, and followed it up with back-to-back hit films. She starred in two separate space-related films in 2014 and 2015, starring alongside some of the biggest names in Hollywood. From playing the daughter of Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar to Matt Damon’s commander in The Martian, Chastain seems right at home with all the big shots of the entertainment industry. While both films revolved around space travel, Chastain didn’t get to actually partake in all the astronaut fun until her role as Commander Lewis in The Martian. In a 2015 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Chastain spoke about how she got involved in The Martian and said, “I thought it would be fun to play an astronaut and do all that wire work in zero gravity.” The wire work completely enhanced the film, making viewers believe they really were in space.
3. Olga Kurylenko
Olga Kurylenko has been seen in a number of high profile character portrayals on both the small and big screen. Many of her roles encompass highly sexualized characters, whether it was Daniel Craig’s Bond girl in Quantum of Solace or the 1950’s mob boss adulteress in the Starz hit series, Magic City. In 2013, Kurylenko starred alongside Tom Cruise in the post-apocalyptic science fiction film, Oblivion. Starring as Julia, Cruise’s wife, Kurylenko spends most of her time onscreen on a futuristic Earth, but can be seen briefly traveling to Saturn’s moon colony, Titan. While the film received less than stellar reviews for its storyline and Cruise’s performance, no one seemed to mind Kurylenko’s scenes strutting around scantily clad. Even while she was encapsulated in a sleep pod for a good portion of the film, filmmakers made sure to dress her in a low plunging tank top to be seen through the glass.
2. Kate Mara
Kate Mara is an actress that has quietly had an ultra-successful career on both television and the big screen. Starring in hit shows like 24 and House of Cards, and box office films like Fantastic Four and Transcendence, Mara has been able to remain in the spotlight without all the pitfalls that usually befall a celebrity. In her portrayal as Beth Johanssen in The Martian, she had more of a minor role but she definitely stood out. From her pixie good looks to the stolen kiss with her fellow crewmate, Mara played more like the eye candy portion of the film. Offscreen, she’s even more beautiful, whether it’s a super short hair style to long flowing auburn locks. She’s perfect at playing the temptress onscreen, and doesn’t seem to shy away from the more provocative roles. More than likely, the world has yet to see the last of Kate Mara.
1. Charlize Theron
As a prequel to Ridley Scott’s Alien franchise, Prometheus is the 2012 film that answered many of the questions audiences had about this iconic space story. Charlize Theron played the character Meredith Vickers, the daughter of Peter Weyland, the founder of the Weyland Corporation. While her character wasn’t exactly the most likeable in the film, her hotness was undeniable. From the scantily clad Theron looking wet and wild while doing some push-ups to her ultra glam look while walking around on the ship, she flaunted her offscreen glamorous look throughout the film. She has already proven she can transform into a much uglier state, like in Monster, so she didn’t have anything to prove for audiences in this 2012 film. Instead, she showed just how beautiful she can be, even if it was only on the outside. Not seeming to care about anyone but herself, Theron portrayed the beautiful but broken character without skimping on any of the sex appeal she’s known for.
