Do those moments in a movie, where passionate couples rush off to the nearest hotel rooms in fits of lust, really happen? Perhaps, but in real life rushed liaisons in a hotel room are usually the reserve of clandestine couples. More specifically, cheating couples.
There are many reasons why people choose to cheat on their husbands, wives, and partners. One thing they all have in common is that they don’t want to be caught. Instead of taking the risk of cheating on home turf, couples take to the nearest hotels for the privacy they sorely need.
Hotels are private, discreet and they’re perfect for a meeting you don’t want the world to witness. There’s a lock-and-key door, a bed, a shower to clear off the evidence, and drapes to draw over the windows. When cheaters have only one thing on their minds, a hotel room is easily the most convenient and safest location.
Since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, perhaps some amorous couples are curious about the best hotels in which to enjoy a romantic time with their (very) secret admirer. Thanks to the infamous dating site for cheaters, AshleyMadison.com, the hotel chain of choice for secret couples is now known. The site surveyed 20,000 of their misbehaving members to find out which are their favourite hotels to bring affair partners. Based on their findings, the following are the 10 most popular hotels for extramarital affairs ranked from least to most frequented.
Do adulterers save a few bucks or do they go out for all-out luxury? What makes a perfect ‘affair’ hotel. These findings will give the answers to those burning questions.
10. Best Western – 2.7%
2.7% of those surveyed decide to hit up a Best Western to do their “business”. This probably has a lot to do with the fact that the Best Western hotel chain is particularly accessible, with over 4,000 of them around the world – many of which are in the United States.
In other words, these hotels are not hard to find, and their discount prices (as low as $134 for a standard room in New York City) won’t make cheating on your wife or husband more stressful than it already is. Besides, when it comes right down to it, most couples just need a room, bed, and shower. All the extra-marital fun without the frills.
9. Westin – 3%
Westin attracts about 3% of the 20,000 cheaters surveyed to their rooms, which are available for a decent price. If it’s a weekend fling, they have deals which include nearly half off the second night’s stay, and included continental breakfasts for much needed energy the morning after.
They even have themed birthday packages, which are perfect when people want to celebrate nowhere near their spouse. The birthday package means that if someone was born in 1979, their second night’s stay would be only $78. Why not take advantage? It would be a good birthday surprise on top of the one that’s already in store.
8. Four Seasons – 3.5%
Having an affair doesn’t mean people want to skip out on the fancier hotel chains. Besides, cheap motels aren’t great for setting the mood. A city-view guest room at a Four Seasons isn’t cheap, at about $600 per night in Miami, Florida.
An affair can be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and sexy surroundings might make all the difference, so at least 3.5% of 20,000 people don’t mind taking out their Amex or Visa card at the reception desk to make it really special.
7. Courtyard Marriott – 4.8%
It’s a digitally-connected world of smartphones, apps, and, of course, dating websites. So, of course, it’s very common for two people to meet online and schedule a real-life meeting, while their significant others remain none the wiser.
That could be why almost 5% choose a Courtyard Marriott hotel for their affair; all they have to do is use the chain’s app to book a room. Almost every hotel has a restaurant or bar on site, but the ones at Courtyard Marriott are pretty swanky, and are as good as a place as any to meet a lover and break the ice.
6. Radisson – 5.4%
Radisson hotels are affordable, but not cheap, and they’re a good compromise for “dating”. The level of luxury and service vary greatly between Radisson’s various brand names and locations. One Radisson hotel might cost guests hundreds of dollars, even if the room’s just going to be used for a few crucial hours. Other hotels might be under a hundred dollars.
Having an affair is often an act of passion, so getting a room in advance might not be so easy. But a good portion of the 5.4% of would-be adulterers who have a long-term affair can pick the Radisson and reserve a room early.
5. Holiday Inn – 6.3%
Who doesn’t like earning hotel rewards? Holiday Inn has plenty, and your rewards can come in handy when a room is needed without any notice. Cheating couples might also choose a Holiday Inn because of their weekend packages that “add a touch of romance”. The packages come with a bottle of wine, flowers, and a box of chocolates.
“Romance” might be the last thing on people’s minds when they’re having an affair, but it’s always good to know the option is always there for those who are seriously in love (with two or more people, that is).
4. Comfort Inn – 7.5%
Comfort Inns may not be as impressive as most of the hotels on this list, but they do the trick for couples who need some quick privacy. A free buffet breakfast is available to refuel the next day, and their self-described “cozy beds” will be ready for whatever it is people have in mind.
They offer simple amenities and they’re easy on the wallet. Some room prices are as low as $59 per night, but the Comfort Inn doesn’t give off those sleazy vibes for which pay-by-the-hour motels are notorious. With comfort at a very low price, a prospective cheater needn’t make a suspicious dent in the joint bank account.
3. Sheraton – 8.2%
The varied hotels on this list prove that price isn’t really the biggest factor in choosing a hotel for an affair. According to AshleyMadison.com, adulterers care more about the distance from their homes than anything else.
Getting a hotel in the first place is all about convenience, so the closer to the hotel, the better, and Sheratons are plentiful and accessible in the U.S. They’re usually decent, comfortable hotels by any standards and will have everything couples need to make the night (or day, if that’s their thing) a complete success.
2. Hilton – 9.8%
Ever wonder how Hilton became one of the biggest and richest hotel brand names in the world? It’s likely because of their plentiful locations, level of service, and amenities. But according to Noel Biderman, CEO of AshleyMadison.com, a big source of profit for all hotels is from people who are having affairs – and this is true for Hilton hotels in particular. Biderman wisely pointed out that, even if hotels know what’s going on, they’re not going to judge the happy adulterous couple.
The Hilton is usually in the higher price bracket for a hotel chain, but that hasn’t prevented it from becoming the second most-popular hotel chain for adulterers. These are for cheating couples who want to enjoy each other in comfort and style.
1. Hyatt – 10.4%
Very rarely does it get more luxurious than the Hyatt, one of the best-located hotel chains in the world. You can’t really put a price on love, but you can put a price on a room at the Hyatt. Depending on the location, a room for two adults in Los Angeles will cost around $259.
That might sound expensive, but having an affair is a big risk. It’s impossible to know if you’ll ever get caught so cheating couples want to make the most of their stolen moments together. Why not enjoy that time in luxury?
Out of the 20,000 people surveyed, 10.4% chose the Hyatt for an affair over other major hotels, despite what can be a very high price tag. You can’t put a price on those memories…
