All kinds of people are needed to make a television show come to fruition, and a huge majority of those people are the actors. And of those actors, another percentage must be less than attractive. Sure, when you think of the small or big screen and those who are on it, is is more often than not a sexy or pretty or handsome man or woman because people like to watch attractive people; they just do, right or wrong. However, not everyone is attractive, and to tell some stories, unattractive people are needed, as well.
This fall, there are a ton of new shows set to come out starting this month, on all the major networks. Shows of every genre will premiere or start a new season, and hundreds of actors will portray a variety of characters to tell all of these different tales. Naturally, some of them will be hot, and some will not. I have rounded up this handy-dandy guide to the upcoming fall television line-up so you will know what to look out for- who to watch for looks, and who to maybe avoid.
There are so many options for both the hot and the not, but I have found 20 great examples to get us started. Read on to learn not only about what are going to be your autumn options for television, but who will be on those programs, and which of them are hot, and which are sadly…not. Since there are so very many people to choose from, we will stick to just the women for now. Maybe the men will get their chance later, but for the time being I give you 20 actresses who you will see on your living room screen in the coming weeks, some of whom are hard not to drool over, and others who are, well, not.
20. Erin Richards, Gotham: Hot
The show Gotham on FOX will begin its third season this fall, premiering Monday, September 19. One bonus of watching this show is the beautiful Erin Richards, who plays Barbara Kean, also known as Barbara Gordon in the movies Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. She is the wife of Gotham City police sergeant, James Nolan, who in this television show is played by Ben McKenzie of The O.C. fame.
A native of the small European country of Wales, Erin has always been a huge fan of Batman, largely because he is a hero with no superhero powers, meaning that anyone could be a hero, then, or anyone could be Batman. That logic works for me. The Welsh beauty is mostly known for her films Open Grave and The Quiet Ones, as well as her current role on Gotham. Erin is 30-years-old.
19. Kristen Schaal, The Last Man on Earth: Not
Although this actress is in all likelihood a very nice person, she is unfortunately one of the “nots” of this list. Often portraying sweet but oddball characters, Kristen Schaal always thought she would either be an epidemiologist (random) or a The Price is Right model, which makes sense given that by her own admission, she thinks she’s always “had a disconnect from what she’s supposed to be like.” I assume by that, she means what society thinks she should be. Sadly, society thinks she should be gorgeous, but we cannot all be gorgeous, can we? So instead of being in a lab or hospital somewhere (or on The Price is Right stage next to Drew Carey– yeah, right), Kristen wound up on our television screen and in movies like The Boss with Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Bell, or in animated films that she lends her signature lisped, high-pitch voice to.
18. Kylie Bunbury, Pitch: Hot
One of this fall’s new shows is called Pitch, about a female pitcher who becomes the first woman to play in the Major Leagues. Sounds like a show with a great story behind it! Kylie Bunbury plays that girl, whose name is Ginny Baker. At 27-years-old, this Canadian is not an A-lister quite yet, but she definitely has her foot in the door, and now with this leading role on a show that has the potential to do really well, I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of her pretty face very soon. Pitch is slated to premiere on FOX on September 22, and its main star has previously been seen on Days of Our Lives, Twisted, Tut, and Under the Dome. Her film credits include The Sitter and Prom, both movies from 2011. Her Pitch costar is a bit more famous; he is Mark-Paul Gosselaar of Saved by the Bell fame.
17. Jill Johnson, This Is Us: Not
Another brand new show out this fall is This Is Us, a comedy/drama about the intersecting lives of a group of people all born on the same day, including a married couple expecting triplets, an actor, and others. Interestingly, this show stars the nearly-forgotten actress and singer, Mandy Moore, who I feel like no one has seen in awhile. It also stars the lesser-known Jill Johnson, who sadly is a “not”.
She may be lesser-known, but she has had small roles on numerous television shows like Scream Queens, Life in Pieces, Fresh Off the Boat, Selfie, American Horror Story, The Crazy Ones, Sam and Cat, Enlisted, Sons of Anarchy, Family Tools, and Legit. It seems as though This Is Us will be her biggest role yet, and she plays the character of Laurie, a woman struggling with her weight. No, she may not be the skinniest woman alive, but just watch a preview for This Is Us (Tuesdays on NBC) and you will see that in fact, she is very beautiful. Hot and beautiful; there is a difference.
16. Emily Kinney, Conviction: Hot
She is hot in more than one sense of the word, because Emily Kinney, who is probably known best for her portrayal of little sister Beth on The Walking Dead, is a hot commodity right now. And she is physically sexy as well, but that is obvious. Now that Beth was killed off the popular zombie apocalypse show, Emily was free for another project, and so now she will play Tess Larson on the new ABC legal drama, Conviction (though she has been plenty busy in between shows, too). She is not the main character of the show, but oh well.
Conviction is about a team who investigate wrongful convictions. Emily, a vegetarian from Nebraska, will be only one of the pretty girls on the show, though, as her costars are Hayley Atwell and Merrin Dungey. But she will be the only blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty of the cast, at least so far.
15. Gabourey Sidibe, Empire: Not
I remember actress Gabourey Sidibe from when she starred in the 2009 movie Precious, which I actually really enjoyed. That seems like forever ago, and since then, the star whose nickname is Gabby has been in plenty of other television shows and movies. Precious was her breakout role, but after that she was in Tower Heist, American Horror Story, Seven Psychopaths, The Big C, The Brothers Grimsby, Difficult People, and of course, Empire. Still relatively new, Empire is in its second season and is a show about a hip-hop mogul who has to choose from his three sons who will succeed him.
Gabourey is a bigger girl, which is the reason she is on this list since the mainstream public do not generally think big is better, but she knows that and does not give a rat’s ass. She says of her body, “I learned to love myself, because I sleep with myself every night and I wake up with myself every morning, and if I don’t like myself, there’s no reason to even live the life. I love the way I look. I’m fine with it. And if my body changes, I’ll be fine with that.” She seems like a lovely person on the inside which is, of course, what counts.
14. Tristin Mays, MacGyver: Hot
There has been a lot of hype about the new show MacGyver, which premieres September 23 on CBS, and yes, it is an action/adventure/drama the likes of its classic predecessor. Actress Tristin Mays plays Riley Davis on the show. Her looks to me are similar to Megan Fox’s, and we all know Megan Fox is a sex symbol. Tristin has the dark hair, light eyes, and almost mischievous smile that resemble Megan’s.
Hailing from New Orleans but having grown up in the Big Apple, Tristin got her start by modeling, and was actually one of the top child models in the country. She made several national commercials and Broadway productions, then moved to the big screen for good. Some of the shows and movies you would have seen her in are Alias, Private, Fail, Zeke and Luther, Thunderstruck, She Is Not My Sister, The Wedding Ringer, The Vampire Diaries, Supergirl, and Happy Birthday.
13. Lauren Ash, Superstore: Not
I love this girl, I really do. I loved watching her as Rebel Wilson’s roommate on the short-lived but hilarious Super Fun Night. Now she is on the comedy series Superstore, which premieres its second season on September 22. Lauren plays Dina, one of the employees of the big box store this show centers around. But simply put, Lauren is just not hot. She is a bit on the masculine side, and I don’t think people consider that sexy (well, unless you’re a lesbian, I assume). But she does have a nice resume, one which includes Another Period, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, Dirty Singles, Scare Tactics, The Ron James Show, Almost Heroes, Hotbox, and Lars and the Real Girl. And she is not only an actress, but a comedian, as well, and has even won awards for her stand-up comedy in Canada. Lauren is a strict feminist and staunch liberal Democrat.
12. Aja Naomi King, How to Get Away With Murder: Hot
One of my favorite shows is How to Get Away With Murder, and it stars Aja Naomi King as one of the five students of the brilliant professor and lawyer, Annalise Keating, who get involved in a murder mystery of sorts. This girl is just drop-dead gorgeous, if you ask me, and that is just exacerbated by the fact that she also happens to have an amazing body. If her face looks familiar to you, it may be because her acting repertoire is impressive, so you may have seen her in Person of Interest, Emily Owens, M.D., The Blacklist, Deadbeat, Damsels in Distress, The Rewrite, Black Box, Reversion, and The Birth of a Nation, to name a few. The 31-year-old has a beautiful face, but often plays a stuck-up or snobby girl. How to Get Away With Murder season three premieres September 22 on ABC.
11. Liza Weil, How to Get Away With Murder: Not
Aja Naomi King’s costar Liza Weil is unfortunately, not hot. She is too thin, mousy-looking, and in the show, her character is quite unlikable, so maybe that has left a bad taste in my mouth. I don’t know, but I do not see this woman as being seen as sexy in any capacity. It is a shame (for her) that she has to work beside Aja (see #12). Of course, Liza is eight years older than Aja, but it shows. I’m sorry, but some women just look like bitches, and she is one of them (or maybe she is just a really good actress on HTGAWM). When she smiles, it looks like she is in pain.
She spent her childhood traveling around the world with her parents, who were comedians in a famous troupe. She had originally wanted to grow up to be an archaeologist because of her love of Indiana Jones and crush on Harrison Ford, but fate had it that she would be an actress instead. And Liza has an extensive resume behind her, productions such as ER, Anyone But Me, Scandal, Bunheads, and Gilmore Girls, a show in which her part was specifically written just for her.
10. Abigail Spencer, Timeless: Hot
Abigail Spencer is a writer, actress, and producer whose latest project is playing Lucy Preston on the new NBC sci-fi drama series, Timeless, which premieres on October 3. It is about an unlikely trio who are time-traveling and battling criminals in order to protect history as we know it. Abigail is obviously very pretty, but in terms of her rockin’ body, Abigail says, “I definitely gravitate towards things like vegetables, chicken, brown rice, but I don’t deprive myself of anything. If I want a Sprinkles cupcake, I’m having a Sprinkles cupcake. But I’m not going to have one every day… you just have to have a sensible outlook on all of it.” She has been in so many shows and movies that it would take forever to name them all, but here are a few of the bigger ones: All My Children, Angela’s Eyes, Mad Men, Castle, Private Practice, Hawthorne, Burning Love, Oz the Great and Powerful, How I Met Your Mother, This Is Where I Leave You, True Detective, Rectify, Suits, and The Sweet Life.
9. Mackenzie Marsh, American Housewife: Not
Television’s newest family comedy is called American Housewife. Actress Mackenzie Marsh from Colorado plays one of those housewives, Gail. But this is far from her first rodeo, as the buxom blonde has appeared and starred in several other shows and films throughout the years, like Just Before I Go, The Following, The Dog Who Saved Summer, Pee Wee’s Big Holiday, and now American Housewife, which premiers on October 11 on ABC.
Before all of this big-time stuff though, Mackenzie grew up performing professional musical theater in Denver. Like others on this list, she has a pretty face, but this list is not about faces, it is about bodies, of which you need an appealing one to be considered one of the hot. However, bodies aside, she seems to have a fun sense of humor and attitude, citing leopard-print, okra, crushed ice, big bows, Mario Kart, her pillow, jalapeno chips, hot sauce, and Pineapple Diet Coke (didn’t know there was such a thing) as her favorite things.
8. Kristen Bell, The Good Place: Hot
Kristen Bell returns to television as a dead woman who realizes she does not deserve to be in The Good Place, a town where people who have been good throughout their lives go once they have passed away. Appropriately, this new show is called The Good Place, and premieres September 19 on NBC after Superstore. It also stars Ted Danson. But to get back to the topic of this article, Kristen Bell has always been a looker, and is definitely part of the hot group of fall television. She is often ranked high on various “Most Beautiful” and “Sexiest Women” lists, and for good reason. Her petite frame, blonde hair, pretty face, and sunny disposition make Kristen a gorgeous woman all around. Even hotter is the fact that Kristen enjoys life most when in the buff, no kidding. She says, “I rarely wear clothes when I’m home by myself. I love making breakfast naked. But you’ve got to make sure the gardener’s not coming that day.”
7. Juliette Lewis, Secrets and Lies: Not
Ever since I first saw Juliette Lewis in Natural Born Killers oh so long ago, I just kinda thought she has a funny look to her. There is nothing wrong with that, of course, and people cannot help the way that they look. But especially as she has gotten older, that “look” becomes more prevalent (though she seems to have a decent body, especially at her age).
She is a very talented and versatile actress, having starred in plenty of movies like The Other Sister, Conviction, and Jem and the Holograms. But now she is on the ABC crime drama Secrets and Lies, which premieres its second season on September 25. She plays Detective Andrea Cornell, which is the series lead. At 53-years-old, this husky-voiced actress is also an accomplished singer; she took a six-year hiatus from acting to pursue this dream, and led the rock band Juliette and the Licks until 2009 when she went solo.
6. Devin Kelley, Frequency: Hot
Frequency is yet another new show out this fall, a sci-fi/drama/fantasy/mystery about an estranged father and daughter separated by his death 20 years before. But then, his daughter finds a way to communicate with him through a ham radio, and they work together to change history before it’s too late, all the while repairing their damaged relationship. Devin Kelley plays Julie, the mother, and this girl is seriously pretty. We have not seen too much of her before, but I am sure that now we will. If anything, she is known for The Chicago Code, Covert Affair, The Chernobyl Diaries, Turtle Island, Anchors, Resurrection, and Swept Under. She is in a leading role now on Frequency, which is a CW reboot of the original, though since she is only 30-years-old (and does not even look it), I question how she will convincingly play the mother of Peyton List, who is a mere 12 years younger. Frequency will premiere on October 5.
5. Gina Rodriguez, Jane the Virgin: Not
The CW show Jane the Virgin is on its third season now, as of October 17. It is the tale of good girl Jane Villanueva (played by Gina Rodriguez) who is accidentally artificially inseminated and becomes pregnant. Look, there are hots, there are nots, and then there is Gina. There is nothing really wrong with her, but she falls closer to not, unfortunately. The 32-year-old Chicago native makes $40,000 per episode, which is pretty good money. But alas, no matter how cute or sexy she dresses up, there is just something simply un-sexy about her. I just can’t get there with her. Some people can have everything going for them- like in Gina’s case, the money, the fame, the cute outfits- but still not be hot. I am sure she is a lovely woman, and maybe she is one of those people who looks different in person. But strictly judging from the television screen, magazine photos, and internet, she belongs on the not hot list.
4. Sophia Bush, Chicago P.D.: Hot
Sophia Bush got famous for portraying Brooke Davis on the long-running teen series One Tree Hill, and now she plays Detective Erin Lindsay on NBC’s Chicago P.D. In between, she had a lot of work in things like John Tucker Must Die, Partners, Stay Alive, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. On the latter three, she also played the character of Erin Lindsay.
Sophia is a natural beauty, with a womanly body and confident air that all together scream hot. This former sorority girl may play a detective on T.V., but she has a concealed weapons permit in real life, which is bad ass. Also cool is that she is a total guy’s girl; she drinks beer, loves football games, and chills in a tee-shirt and plays with her dog on the weekends. I don’t know what her One Tree Hill costar and ex-husband Chad Michael Murray was thinking letting this great catch go.
3. Betsy Brandt, Life in Pieces: Not
Personally, I can never see Betsy Brandt as anything other than the bitchy Marie from Breaking Bad, but that’s just me. That character just left a really bad taste in my mouth, and yes, I know that is not her real self. But she is kind of like Juliette Lewis in that she has an okay body, but her face ruins it. Even if it didn’t, I don’t think too many people would be running around calling her hot. However, she is a good actress, which she has proven in numerous shows and films. Some of the more famous include Private Practice, Magic Mike, The Michael J. Fox Show, Masters of Sex, Parenthood, and now Life in Pieces, which is back for a second season on CBS starting October 27. This family comedy told from the points of view of several of its members also stars Dianne West, James Brolin, and Dan Bakkedahl.
2. Danielle Panabaker, The Flash: Hot
Danielle Panabaker plays Caitlin Snow, an M.D. specializing in genetics at Star Labs, in The Flash, a superhero show about a guy who gets hit by lightning and discovers he now has the power of super speed. Danielle also played the same character in another superhero show, Arrow. Both of these shows came out in 2014, and both have a new season coming out this fall. Anyway, both Danielle and her younger sister Kay are actresses, and they look so much alike that sometimes I cannot tell who is who. The sisters have long hair, pixie-like faces, and are quite pretty. But Danielle is not just a pretty face; she is super-smart, too. She graduated high school at just 14-years-old and was accepted into a scholar’s program at a local community college. She is turning 29 in a few days, but got her start acting as a teenager in Disney films.
1. Martha Plimpton, The Real O’Neals: Not
Another “not” is actress Martha Plimpton, who plays the matriarch of the O’Neal family in the comedy The Real O’Neals. The premiere of season two will air on October 11 on ABC. It is a show about a family who becomes closer to one another after the youngest son tells them he is gay. Unfortunately, the mother, Eileen O’Neal, is not hot. She is no MILF, or cougar, or Stifler’s Mom. Martha Plimpton is, however, hilarious. I loved her as the white trash mom/grandma on Raising Hope. I don’t know how she sees herself, but on hotness in Hollywood, Martha says, “Don’t go to Hollywood right away unless you’re, like, ridiculously hot and only marginally talented. In which case, go straight to Hollywood and make all the money you can. Just take the money and run!” Seems to be funny, too.
