What does fame even mean in our society? With YouTube stars, Instagram stars and reality TV stars, it’s hard to keep track of who is actually famous and who is just milking their 15 minutes of fame.
Reality television has taken over our generation. There is a show for everything now; television is no longer about talent, it’s about pure and raw entertainment. These days, everyone has appeared on a reality show, you don’t have to be an A-list celebrity to find yourself hosting or appearing on a reality show.
While some celebrities are still associated with the reality show they were on, like Kelly Clarkson or the Kardashians, there are many other celebrities who found their fame on reality television and then moved on to bigger and better things. For some celebrities, reality television was their way of getting their foot through the door. There are certain stars that had to work they way up and others who used a reality series as a platform for their future endeavors.
The following is a list of celebrities who you totally did not realize got their start at fame on television. We all know that Christina Aguilara, Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears all performed in The Mickey Mouse Club together and we all know they appeared on Star Search, but who else made their debut that way?
Whether they became famous through reality television or not, the following celebrities are all talented and passionate people who used reality television as a way of turning their dreams into reality.
10. Analeigh Tipton
Analeigh Tipton is what we call a star on the rise. In 2011 she made her big debut in the movie Crazy, Stupid, Love. She has even appeared in The Green Hornet and Hung. This season she starred in a television show called Manhattan Love Story that was unfortunately pulled after only a few episodes. Although this young woman may not be a household name yet, she is on her way to becoming just that. The first person to give her a chance was Tyra Banks on her hit show America’s Next Top Model in 2008. Tipton who was a former figure skater had a unique look and a beautiful physique but did not make it to the end of the competition. She is a great example of someone who made their way through the industry by being on a reality show.
9. Jamie Chung
Jamie Chung is a beautiful actress who is engaged to the handsome Bryan Greenberg. Chung has appeared in hilarious movies such as Grown Ups and The Hangover Part II. Most people have forgotten where she made her first on-screen appearance. Chung’s first moments of fame began in 2004 when she was part of MTV’s The Real World: San Diego. She later participated in another MTV show, Road Rules Challenges: The Inferno II. Chung is a young starlet who is on her way to doing great things. We are anxiously awaiting to see what the future has in store for her.
8. Julianne Hough
Before dating Ryan Seacrest and before appearing in hit movies such as Rock of Ages, Burlesque and Safe Haven, Julianne Hough was one of the professional dancers from Dancing with The Stars. Hough was on the show for four years and had the opportunity to work with some cool people such as Helio Castroneves, Adam Carolla and Apolo Anton Ohno. Julianne Hough has made it clear to her fans that although she will always love dancing, she is determined to pursue a career in film and television – scripted television, that is! Fun fact: Julianne’s brother Derek Hough was also one of the dancers from DWTS!
7. Heather Morris
Heather Morris played one of the best roles on the television show Glee. Her character Britney S. Pierce was by far one of the most loved characters on television. Morris started singing, acting and dancing in 2006 when she competed on season 2 of So You Think You Can Dance. Although she did not make it to the top 20, she was on the path to doing great things. Morris earned her big break when she was chosen as one of the backup dancers for Beyonce’s world tour, The Beyonce Experience. This lead to her part on Glee and the rest is history. It’s crazy how such a talented dancer did not make it into the top 20!
6. Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson has by far one of the most powerful voices of our generation. Her extreme talent has lead to huge success including an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2007 for her remarkable performance in Dream Girls. Hudson got her first taste of fame on season three of American Idol. Sadly, she did not win the competition. However, by having her voice heard by millions of viewers, she was able to mark a spot in show business. Jennifer Hudson is truly a talented woman and it’s crazy to think that without reality television, the world may have never been privileged enough to hear her voice.
5. Katharine McPhee
Like Jennifer Hudson, Katharine McPhee got her start on American Idol season 5. Although McPhee did not win the competition (losing to the grey haired Taylor Hicks), she did not give up on her dream. This talented girl took show business by storm when she earned one of the lead roles in the now-cancelled television show Smash. Even though the show was not a success, she had the chance to work alongside stars like Jack Davenport and Debra Messing. Nowadays you can watch her on the television show Scorpion, where she plays the role of Paige.
4. Lucy Hale
Lucy Hale has found a lot of success in the past few years. Her role as Aria on the hit television series Pretty Little Liars has gained her an extremely large fan base. With over 8 million followers on Instagram alone, it’s hard to believe this starlet was once a reality star. Lucy Hale was on the show American Juniors (Think American Idol, but for juniors). After the show ended, Hale was determined to pursue a career in show business. She landed a few small roles but nothing as big as Pretty Little Liars. Lucy Hale is extremely talented and has a bright future ahead of her.
3. Elisabeth Hasselbeck
The American talk show host is best known as the girl who replaced Lisa Ling in 2003 as the new co-host of the day-time talk show The View. Hasselbeck is known for her opinionated spirit and argumentative temper. She found herself in many political and social debates and she was a great addition to the show. Although she was not the most favored host on The View, many fans felt sad when she left in 2013. What many fans do not know about her is that her first television role was on the hit reality series Survivor: The Australian Outback.
2. Emma Stone
Emma Stone is one of Hollywood’s “It Girls” at the moment. She is best known for her roles in movies such as Easy A, Crazy Stupid love and my personal favorite, The Help. Many have forgotten how Miss Stone came into Hollywood, in 2004 she participated in a VH1 reality competition, In Search of the New Partridge Family. Emma Stone found success in the show winning the part of Laurie Partridge. However, this was small success compared to what she has experienced in recent years. Emma Stone is on the path to greatness, however, her path is a bit different from other stars because hers started on a reality show.
Yes ladies and gentlemen, before Beyonce was Queen B and even before Destiny’s Child, Beyonce appeared on reality television. Once upon a time, the hip-hop girl group Girl Tyme appeared on Star Search. Many people call Girl Tyme the original Destiny’s Child. It’s crazy to think that one of the most talented and powerful celebrities on the planet made her first television appearance on reality T.V. Although Beyonce’s life has changed dramatically since Star Search, she says she remembers that day vividly. There is no denying how talented Beyonce is and without Star Search we are sure she would have still found her way to the top. She is that good.
