There isn’t exactly a standard check-off list when it comes to the characteristics of a celebrity bad girl. While some focus on the partying habits caught by paparazzi, others are more inclined to judge based on movie role picks or even previous professions. Constantly picking films with nude scenes or getting caught stumbling out of the club, causes everyone to have their own idea of what constitutes a bad girl in Hollywood.
With so many celebrities growing up in the public eye, there has been no shortage of tabloid incidents documenting all the mistakes made by “Young Hollywood.” While some choose to sit back and judge, others have a more realistic take on the so-called “bad girls” of the celebrity world. With the intense media scrutiny surrounding celebrities, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the public has been privy to a plethora of mistakes and blunders. It’s interesting to consider what public opinion would be about you if cameras followed your every move while growing up. Now, tack on a couple of million dollars and a boatload of fame, and think how much worse you could have been.
While there have been some celebrity bad girls that turned into the typical burnt out cliché, not all of them have become Tara Reid or Courtney Love. Check out our list for celebrity bad girls gone good, and see how the broken road can lead people to who they are truly meant to be.
15. Alyssa Milano – From Filming In The Buff To Motherhood
Being on so many different shows since she was first introduced to audiences on Who’s the Boss?, Alyssa Milano has fans from all different age groups. While older audiences know her as little Samantha Micelli, others were only first introduced to her through her role on Charmed. Unlike other child actresses that seemed to peak in their career and then fizzle out, Alyssa Milano has been included in a hit series at almost every stage of her life.
However, there definitely was a stage in her career that brought out the bad girl side in a big way. While her portrayal as Amy Fisher in Casualties of Love: The Long Island Lolita Story absolutely made audiences see her in a different light, it wasn’t just one TV movie that put her in the bad girls club. Starring in a string of films with explicit nude scenes, she quickly made quite a different reputation for herself. Halle Berry actually won an Academy Award after starring in a film where she went nude, but Milano’s Poison Ivy II: Lily and Confessions of a Sorority Girl weren’t exactly up to par with Monster’s Ball.
These days, Alyssa Milano is the host of Project Runway: All Stars, and focuses on causes close to her heart. In February 2016, Milano opened up to ET Online about how life has changed after having her son. Milano said, “Even though I had a really full beautiful life beforehand, my life really began the day he was born.”
14. Drew Barrymore – From Addiction To Motherhood
Long before the public became shocked over fallen Disney kids, Drew Barrymore was the epitome of a child star gone bad. After the huge fame that arrived from her portrayal as Gertie in ET, Drew’s mother, Jaid Barrymore, would famously take a tender-aged Drew to popular nightclubs. In a 1989 article in People magazine, Drew recounts some of the more disturbing details of her childhood. The article states, “She had her first drink at 9, began smoking marijuana at 10 and at 12 took up cocaine.”
After a few stints in rehab, being mentally institutionalized, and eventually emancipated from her parents, Drew began the long journey to recovery. While she has had a string of failed marriages through the years, the actress has been able to reinvent herself through her acting choices and most importantly, her role as a mother. In a November 2015 interview with HELLO!, Drew opened up about motherhood by saying, “I felt that my life started the day my kids were born and everything I had before was something to be used as wisdom and experience for them.”
13. Claire Danes – Homewrecker To Starting Her Own Home
As a teenager, Claire Danes became an instant favorite with fans due to her uncanny portrayal of adolescent angst in the television show, My So-Called Life. While it only lasted a single season, the show spawned two breakout stars: Jared Leto and Claire Danes. While many actors find it difficult to transition from the awkward teenage years to adulthood, films like Romeo & Juliet and Stardust proved she could make it in Hollywood alongside seasoned actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.
While her film choices showed she could play the role of more than just a love-stricken teenager, it’s the choices in her personal life that gave her the bad girl reputation. While the public doesn’t take too kindly to a woman that dates a married man, the feelings definitely intensify when the man’s wife is pregnant. Claire Danes officially crossed over to the dark side when she dated a then-married Billy Crudup, who ultimately left his 7-month pregnant wife, Mary-Louise Parker.
However, the relationship didn’t last long, and Claire Danes went on to marry British actor Hugh Dancy. Giving birth to her first child and starring on the hit show Homeland, she has been able to transform her reputation in Hollywood. As an award-winning actress with a legitimate body of work behind her, she has been able to put her torrid mistakes behind her and is now known more for her role as a doting mother and her serious acting roles.
12. Nicole Richie – Party Animal-Turned Respected Fashion Icon
Coming a long way from the reality personality depicted on The Simple Life with Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie has proven that people can truly change. From throwing a bottle of bleach onto a pool table and hosting sex tape viewing parties, Nicole Richie didn’t exactly exude sophistication and glamour in her younger years.
However, things changed for Richie after marrying Joel Madden and becoming a mother of two. Slimming down her baby fat and swapping out the grunge style for couture, she is now thought of as a style icon with roles on hit fashion reality shows. Many people have forgotten all about the Nicole Richie that was Paris Hilton’s sidekick, and see her only as a role model for young moms that still want to stay on trend.
11. Paris Hilton – Party Animal To Savvy Businesswoman
Proving there’s actually money to be made from being a socialite, Paris Hilton made the most out of her 15 minutes of fame. While the Hilton name may have been what got her in the door, Paris created enough buzz on her own through her on-screen and off-screen antics. The Simple Life showed her as a spoiled little rich girl out of touch with the real world, and often demeaning towards those around her. While this was bad enough, the release of her sex tape, One Night in Paris with Rick Salomon put the ultimate spotlight on her sexual escapades.
Since then, Paris has done a lot of growing up, and has even shed her patented baby-style of talking. She is now known as a savvy businesswoman with a huge following in Asia. With her net worth estimated at $100 million in 2015, Paris has branched out her brand to include everything from retail endorsements to DJ appearances. While she hasn’t yet settled down and married like her sister Nicky, she has solidified herself as a smart and self-made businesswoman that deserves respect.
10. Winona Ryder – Arrest Changed Her Life
Known for her role in various coming of age films, Winona Ryder has a string of cult-following movies under her belt. Whether you were first introduced to her through Beetlejuice, Heathers, or Mermaids; she is an actress that boasts a long list of hit films in her professional career.
Yet her personal life has been strife with mistakes and blunders. From her tumultuous relationship with Johnny Depp to her brush with the law due to her arrest for shoplifting, Winona Ryder earned a spot in Hollywood for her bad girl reputation. However, a 2009 feature with Interview Magazine revealed how the arrest actually helped her to change her life around. After taking a brief hiatus from acting, she returned to be as strong as ever. Redeeming herself in the eyes of the public, Winona Ryder proved she was able to hang on to her talents as an actress and the porcelain skin that gives her that timeless look.
9. Angelina Jolie – Philanthropy Work For UN
Angelina Jolie was no stranger to making headlines for her obscene behavior, whether it was the vial of blood she wore around her neck when linked with Billy Bob Thornton or the fact that she was publicly dubbed a “homewrecker.” However, a lot has changed since we were all forced to pick between “Team Jen” or “Team Jolie.”
While marrying Brad Pitt, the man she allegedly stole from Jennifer Aniston, may not have ingratiated fans over to her side, the philanthropic work she has dedicated her life to has brought around real change in the eyes of the public. Proving it’s not all just for show, Angelina Jolie was appointed Special Envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in 2012 and continues to work with charitable organizations throughout the world. While people might still be a bit upset about the whole Brad Pitt situation, it’s hard to call Angelina Jolie a bad girl when she’s dedicated so much of her time and energy into helping those less fortunate around the globe.
8. Demi Lovato – From Addiction To Helping Others
Starting off as a child actress on Barney & Friends and then moving on to be a Disney kid, Demi Lovato strayed from her squeaky clean image like so many child actors before her. While her singing career started to take off, the problems in her personal life seemed to overshadow her musical ability. Battling addiction, bulimia, bipolar disorder, and some very publicized romantic troubles, fans worried if she would ever bounce back.
Not only did she bounce back, but she has become a spokesperson for sobriety and a role model for teens. Her performance on the final season of American Idol proved that she indeed has the vocal ability to make a lasting impression in the music industry. She also posed in tasteful nude, makeup-free photos for Vanity Fair, where she became an inspiration for women of all body types to be happy in your own skin.
7. Fergie Ferguson – Religion, Husband Helped Clean Her Act
Being quite open about her bad girl past as the female vocalist in The Black Eyed Peas, Fergie’s drug of choice was crystal meth. Anyone that has seen an episode of Breaking Bad knows that crystal meth isn’t a drug that can be easily kicked, and it’s not exactly thought of as something for casual use. Rather than going on the typical downward spiral, Fergie was able to kick her addiction and move on to a more wholesome lifestyle. Finding religion, marrying Josh Duhamel, and becoming a Mom have been the driving forces in her incredible change from partying bad girl to doting wife and mother.
6. Vanessa Hudgens – Shed The Post-Disney Reckless Behaviour
As another casualty of starting off as a Disney kid, Vanessa Hudgens grew up in the public eye and had a pretty successful career in both television and music. However, it was the choices in her personal life and acting roles that gave her the bad girl reputation. Her portrayal as Candy in the controversial film, Spring Breakers, was a definite eye-opener for audiences, which wasn’t helped by the leaked nude photos that showed up online. The fact that the nude photos of Vanessa Hudgens appeared on the Internet on separate occasions showed that she obviously hadn’t learned her lesson on taking private photos. While she worried that these photos would end up hurting her career, she has been able to transform her image in recent years. Showing the seriousness of her craft, Vanessa Hudgens recently wowed audiences when appearing on Fox’s Grease: Live even after just learning of the death of her father.
5. Christina Aguilera – She Put More Clothes On
While Christina Aguilera doesn’t have a drug-ridden past, there is more to being a bad girl than just drug use and a string of arrests. While her music career really kicked into gear with the hit single, “Genie In A Bottle,” things got a lot “dirtier” as she grew as an artist. Highly sexualized music videos like “Dirrty” and “Lady Marmalade” quickly put her on the bad girl list, and the feuding rumors in her personal life definitely didn’t help to fight off that label.
Nowadays, Christina Aguilera has toned down her image and embraced her role as Mom and television character on the family-friendly show, The Voice. While she still has her diva moments, she has definitely “gone good” when compared to her days dancing around in lingerie.
4. Megan Fox
When Megan Fox first came onto the Hollywood scene, many coined her as the new and young Angelina Jolie due to her striking good looks. However, since looks can only take you so far in Hollywood, many roles are landed by the ability to work well with others and who you know in the celebrity world. While Megan Fox seemed like the perfect fit to fulfill the beautiful damsel in distress role in the Transformers film, things took a turn for the worse when her dialogue went unscripted.
Making a now infamous comment to Wonderland Magazine in 2009, Megan responded to a question asking what it was like to work with Michael Bay and she responded by comparing him to Hitler. Many took this statement as trivializing the Holocaust, including Steven Spielberg, who demanded she be fired from the franchise. When making enemies of Hollywood’s big wigs, you can almost guarantee a black stain on your record. While the comment definitely didn’t help her chances in landing quality acting roles, it did give her time to focus on her personal life and grow as a person. Nowadays, Megan Fox is working on restoring her marriage with husband, Brian Austin Green, and glowing with pregnancy with their second child.
3. Britney Spears – Her Life Has Come Full Circle
Britney Spears always seemed to have a bit of bad girl edge to her music, from the highly sexualized school girl uniform in “Baby One More Time” to the “I’m A Slave 4 U” video where it’s pretty much an orgy scene involving a pretty big snake. However, she didn’t reach true bad girl status until her personal life came to a head – literally. Britney shaved her head bald, attacked a car with an umbrella, and checked into a mental health institution.
While it seemed like she was on the road to becoming just another Disney kid cautionary tale, she has really changed things around to transform her career. As one of the first current music artists to start up a residency in Vegas, she seems to have found her niche in a more grounded way. She has since up opened up about her bipolar disorder, and embraced the quirks that have given her so much trouble in the past. Finally getting back to her good girl roots, she devotes her attention on what is most important to her: family.
2. Eve Cooper – From Stripping To Marrying A Billionaire
When rapper, Eve, first came on to the music scene, she seemed like such a great addition to the Ruff Ryder and “Hot Boyz” phase of Hip Hop. When pictures surfaced of her stripper days before becoming a music artist, the most shocking part were the videos featuring Eve dancing in some dive-like venues. Although hanging around some rough characters and having stripper origins, it didn’t take much for Eve to shed her bad girl reputation. Actually, it only took a “Maximillion.”
Maximillion Cooper is a British billionaire best known as a British Gumball 3000 motor rally CEO and co-founder. He and Eve tied the knot in 2014, after dating for four years. In an interview with Madame Noire, Eve said, “He’s the one that tamed me. He enjoys my crazy sometimes so it’s good. It’s a really good relationship, so I’m happy.”
1. Lisa Bonet – Married Lenny Kravitz
While she will probably always be known as the Denise Huxtable character from The Cosby Show, she also made another name for herself in Hollywood, and that was “Troublemaker.” Clashing with Bill Cosby back-in-the-day seemed to be a sure fire way to get blacklisted in Hollywood, or at least give a bad reputation that hurt career chances. Marrying bad boy Lenny Kravitz, getting pregnant at a young age, and losing out on some good Cosby and Different World money, seemed to change public perception for Lisa Bonet.
However, she was able to turn the tables over the years, to change public opinion about her persona. She and Lenny Kravitz have taken a very mature approach to their parenting, even after their divorce, and the details surrounding the real Bill Cosby have surfaced to reveal who the actual man was behind the wholesome Huxtable façade. While she may have been coined the bad girl from the Cosby kid bunch, she is now thought of as a well-grounded woman, actress, and mother.
