The entertainment and music industry are extremely difficult to break into, but the real work comes once fame is already achieved. While it’s said that everyone in the world will have at least 15 minutes of fame, who wants only 15 minutes? In order to stay relevant in Hollywood, celebrities must stay on top of their game and evolve with the times.
Just as fashion trends change with each passing season, celebrities often have to reinvent themselves to remain at the top of the pecking order. The same look that may have created an “It” girl status in the ’90s, doesn’t exactly play well with modern trends.
There are some celebrities that have acknowledged this fact, and have evolved their look accordingly. The same short-haired styling that made Demi Moore desirable in Ghost doesn’t quite compare to her most recent look in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. In fact, many celebrities get criticized for not changing their look to go with the times. Recently, Lisa Rinna made headlines simply by changing her hairstyle. Since she’s had the same hairstyle for 20 years, fans were overjoyed to see her finally evolving her signature look.
While there have been some celebrities that were able to move with the times, there are others that seem to be stuck in their original look. Whether you find it endearing or just a bit sad, check out our list of 15 celebrities that haven’t evolved their look and see how difficult it can be for some Hollywood favorites to change.
14. Kid Rock
Kid Rock is a platinum-selling artist who has shown true versatility throughout his career. From rap to rock and roll to country music, he is an artist that can excel in more than one genre. However, his versatility definitely hasn’t extended to his outward appearance. Donning the same look and style he had when he was first introduced to audiences, his hair is still long and the t-shirts just keep on coming. Rather than put effort into revamping his style, he has spent recent years stirring up trouble at local waffle houses and pissing off the Beyhive.
During a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Kid Rock made some comments about how he was “flabbergasted” by Beyonce’s popularity and the Beyhive began to pounce. Swarming his social media accounts with constant bee symbols so that he couldn’t even get a word in, he is still feeling the effects of his damaging words. While the bee symbols are comical enough, it’s the tweets regarding his stagnant style that are making many fans laugh. One of the favorites include the lines, “This coming from a 42-year-old man still calling himself Kid.”
13. Steven Tyler
Liv Tyler may have looked like an ageless beauty in The Lord of the Rings saga, but her portrayal in The Leftovers has shown that the wrinkles are already starting to appear. So, for her to start showing the signs of aging, it’s been a long time since her father, Steven Tyler, was in his prime of life. Although there was a time when Steven Tyler was the heartthrob frontman of Aerosmith, he is now pushing on 70 years old and still trying to pull off the eccentric style from his heyday. Donning highlights in his hair, the occasional feathered hair extension, and the ascot scarves with bold prints, he has committed to making this look his signature style without any signs of changing.
12. Hulk Hogan
While boxers and MMA fighters have a certain bravado in their persona, it really can’t compare to the showmanship that is required by wrestlers. Long before John Cena and WWE’s Total Divas, Hulk Hogan built an empire from the brand he cultivated through his wrestling antics and signature look. However, he was able to branch out to reach celebrity status that goes beyond the world of wrestling.
From the reality television series, Hogan Knows Best, to being a popular television host, he has created fans that don’t even know him from his wrestling past. Since he was able to branch out, it would stand to reason that he would reinvent himself to coincide with the changing times. Instead, he still clings to the bleach-blonde hair color, bandannas to cover his bald head, and his signature mustache.
11. David Hasselhoff
Gaining the height of his popularity in the late ’80s and ’90s, David Hasselfhoff is best known for his roles in Knight Rider and Baywatch. While he branched off into the music industry, and even became a platinum-selling artist in Europe, his career in the entertainment industry has become a bit stagnant in recent times. Rather than evolving his ’90s style, he seemed to delve deeper into it. Often donning shimmering suits, open-collared shirts, and brightly outdated colors, David Hasselhoff’s style seems untouched by time. The same can be said for his hairstyle, and although it has definite salt-and-pepper tones, it remains a thinner version of his classic Baywatch hair.
10. Gwen Stefani
When Gwen Stefani was first introduced to audiences as the lead singer of the band, No Doubt, people were amazed by her beauty. During the heyday of No Doubt in the ’90s, bands like Weezer and Green Day were the antithesis of the classic boy band. So, while fans could recognize Gwen’s beauty, her style was typical of a ska band and often featured punk elements that made her fit right in with those other bands in her genre. While she went on to release solo music, her style seemed to stay the same. After taking a bit of a hiatus from the public eye, she returned to the forefront of celebrity as a judge on The Voice. Much older than her days as a “Hollaback Girl,” fans wondered what her new style would be. However, one look at her with half-blond half-jet black hair, and they received their answer. She’s still the girl with the punk rock style, and she even has the dance moves to prove it.
9. Flavor Flav
Flavor Flav was first introduced to audiences as a member of the group, Public Enemy, which gained popularity in the late ’80s and early ’90s. He definitely isn’t the first rapper to get stuck in a particular style of dress, even Rev Run from Run-DMC still wears Adidas. However, the eccentricities of Flavor Flav are far beyond the typical rapper ensemble. When VH1 began infusing some life back into his career, he accumulated some new fans as a reality show personality. Starring in The Surreal Life, Strange Love, and the Flavor of Love series, it wasn’t just the “Yeah boy!” catchphrase that remained the same. As a 47-year-old man during the first season of Flavor of Love, you might expect him to dress age-appropriately. However, he continued to wear the over-sized clock necklace and sideways baseball hats. Even to this day, he continues to flaunt his over-the-top style, still including the clocks and eccentric hats.
8. Tommy Lee
Tommy Lee first became famous as a member of Mötley Crüe who were thought of as a heavy metal band with big hair tendencies. While he did update his initial big hair look, it’s hard to say whether or not the new look was any better. Sideways caps, bandannas, and greasy hair seemed to be the style he embraced and the style that continues to define his look. Giving even more hope to him that this look was a keeper, Howard Stern once referred to the Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson sex tape as, “the greatest tape I have ever seen in my life.” Since then, he has remained the same, and often dresses like so many grunge teenage boys seen hanging out at the skate park.
7. Dolly Parton
As one of the most successful and beloved stars in country music, Dolly Parton is a rare celebrity that was able to find fame in both music and film. As a singer/songwriter, she is truly respected for her craft and her acting in hit films like Steel Magnolias and 9 to 5 have endeared her to audiences in a way that no other country artist has been able to do. However, she isn’t exactly thought of as sophisticated and classy. In fact, she is famous for giving quotes like, “It takes a lot of money to look this cheap.” With infamous over-sized breasts and an admitted love for plastic surgery, her look has always been a bit comical. Currently in her 70s, she shows no signs of revamping her look and continues to flaunt her famous bust and flipped-big hairstyle.
6. Betsey Johnson
Betsey Johnson is a fashion designer that is known for her over-the-top designs and eccentric style. While artists are known for their creative juices and eclectic tendencies, Betsey Johnson is a woman that goes above and beyond with eccentricities. From doing cartwheels on the runway to punk hair and red lipstick, she has the look and exuberance of a young girl (even though she’s in her 70s). She became introduced to a larger audience during her appearance on the 19th season of Dancing With the Stars, and even incorporated some of her moves and signature looks into a few of the dance routines.
5. Courtney Love
During the punk and grunge movement in music, Courtney Love was the female counterpart to Kurt Cobain as the lead singer of Hole. While the look had a bit of appeal during her heyday, time definitely hasn’t been kind to Courtney Love. The sloppy hair, smeared makeup, and an overall trashy look, she hasn’t exactly grown into a respectable older woman as she’s aged. Instead, tabloid headlines include stories of Courtney Love exposing her breasts to strangers and even an incident with a homeless man suckling in full view of the public. While there have been a handful of times when she has been able to make somewhat of a changed look on the red carpet, those moments are few and fleeting.
4. Jenji Kohan
Not all celebrities are the faces in front of the camera. Jenji Kohan is content to be behind the scenes, and is the renowned creator of such hit shows as Weeds and Orange Is the New Black. While other producers and writers like Shonda Rhimes have used their new found celebrity status to upgrade their look, Jenji Kohan seems to pay no attention to the standard of beauty in modern times. While she does frequently change her hair, it’s just to change the color from green to purple or blue to pink. As a middle-aged woman, fans wouldn’t expect her to try the same antics as celebrities like Katy Perry, but she doesn’t seem to be evolving her style anytime soon.
3. Duane “Dog” Chapman
When considering a bounty hunter show filmed in Hawaii, you would think the cast of characters would look more like tropical beauties and buff beach bodies with an occasional floral shirt. However, Dog the Bounty Hunter couldn’t feature characters that are farther from the stereotypical Hawaiian with hula skirts and leis. Leather vests, biker-like apparel, and bleach-blonde hair- it doesn’t get more outdated than sporting a mullet that trails down your back. From the overly tanned and leathery skin to the signature sunglasses, even the controversy regarding his racist rant recording hasn’t put a stop to his A&E show. With his signature look being an integral part of the show, it seems you really can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
Since her trademark phrase is “Coochie-Coochie,” it’s hard to take Charo seriously as an artist. However, she has made quite a career out of her flamenco styling and over-the-top personality. While she may seem like a flash in the pan celebrity that will quickly outlive her 15 minutes of fame, she has actually been able to maintain her status in the spotlight. She even recently earned an interview appearance on The Wendy Williams Show, where Wendy commended the fact that she hasn’t evolved her style in the least. With the same skimpy and bejeweled outfits, puffed out hairstyle, and cartoon-like makeup, Charo has a look that will never change.
When Madonna first started a career in the music industry, she was known for her outlandish and highly sexualized antics. From the cone bras to rolling around on the stage in a lingerie style wedding gown, Madonna has always tried to provoke audiences with her sex appeal. While the kiss with Britney Spears at the VMA’s was a shocking moment that helped show fans that she still had the ability to provoke, she has since made headlines for her inability to evolve. Instead of audiences just thinking of her as an icon in music, she has become a sad figure that people wish would start dressing for her age. Not only has she not evolved her look, but she seems to try and recreate the same old themes she’s always been known for.
