With Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally out into the ether, we’ve all had a few months to digest what we’ve seen and speculate on what we think will happen in the next installment of the franchise.
Arguably one of the most hyped films in cinema history, Star Wars VII sent fans into a frenzy. With only snippets of information and the odd trailer to go on, the rumor mill went into overdrive. For over a year, fans were desperate to work out what the movie would be about and which characters would be involved. Piecing together the limited information they had, fans came up with their own theories about the future of the Star Wars brand: ranging from the plausible to the downright ridiculous. However, now that the movie is out, we can finally put some of those rumors to bed.
Warning: major spoiler alert. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, then look away now as we explore the 10 best rumors that
10. Expected Cameos
When the filming of The Force Awakens began, many rumors circulated about who would star in the movie. Once the original trio had been confirmed, the internet was a buzz with other possibilities. The two fan favorites were Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker and Ewan McGregor as Obi Wan Kenobi. With many reports of them being ‘sneaked’ on set, fans were expecting to see the prequel stars most likely in their ‘Force ghost state.’ Although there were many references to Darth Vader and even a voice over from Obi Wan, none of the actors were seen on screen. Maybe that will happen in a future movie.
The other popular cameo appearance theory came from a non Star Wars actor. James Bond himself was going to be a stormtrooper. This one actually happened! Daniel Craig is the stormtrooper that Rey used the Jedi mind trick on in order to free herself.
9. Max Von Sydow is Boba Fett
There is no doubt that the character of Boba Fett has passed into folklore status. So when a new Star Wars movie was announced, many fans couldn’t contain themselves at the thought of Fett’s return. We are all confident that Boba Fett survived the Sarlacc Pit in Return of the Jedi, so surely he’d be at least mentioned in a new movie right?
Wrong. When Max Von Sydow was announced as a cast member, fans speculated on his character. Along with Boba Fett, there was also a theory about Sydow being Rey’s mentor. However, none of these were true and Sydow didn’t actually get much screen time in the end although; it was nice to see the legendary actor in action.
8. Chewbacca is Killed
Since it was revealed that the original cast (Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, etc…) would be back in the new Star Wars movie, the internet was awash with theories on which of them would die. Leading the pack was of course Hans Solo, which as we now know was true! In addition to Han’s fate, many speculated that it would in fact be Chewie that would meet his end.
In one of the final trailers, Rey was seen weeping over a body causing many fans to think it was Chewie’s body. However, as we now know everyone’s favorite Wookie lives to fight another day.
7. Kylo Ren is Palpatine’s Grandson
Since Return of the Jedi there have been many novels, comic books and TV shows continuing the Star Wars saga. This theory came from a plot line out of one of those novels. In it, Emperor Palpatine has a grandson named Ken. He studied under Luke until the dark side took over him and he went to join his grandfather.
This rumor did start to attract a few followers. But as soon as we first see Kylo Ren, we know it’s Darth Vader that he is linked to – a rumor that was very quickly quashed.
6. Darth Vader Will Return
When you create the most infamous villain in all of movie history, then have a trilogy prequel revolving around how he came to be that villain, we couldn’t help but wonder if the new Star Wars movie would see Vader coming back.
The rumor was that with Vader’s ‘Force spirit’ still out there, Kylo Ren finds a way to put the spirit back into a body with the hopes of Vader joining him and together they could rule the galaxy as grandfather and grandson! This didn’t pan out and we are thankful for this. As great as it would have been to see Vader again, his presence in the new movie would have undermined everything he did in the original trilogy.
5. Carrie Fisher’s Daughter
As the gap between the original Star Wars movies and The Force Awakens is so vast, a whole generation has grown up, and some of them may even be unaware of many aspects involving the main cast. Also, as so much has happened between the films, we might all need to catch up. So with this in mind, many fans were certain that flashbacks would be involved in the plot.
In particular there was a very detailed ‘leak’ involving Leia. Focusing more on the early life of the daughter of Darth Vader, it was also going to show what happened between her and Han. Even Carrie Fisher’s real life daughter was reported to be cast as the young Leia. Unfortunately this never panned out. It still could happen in future Star Wars movies, though.
4. Jar Jar Binks Returns as a Sith Lord
Probably the most ridiculous and bizarre fan theory to surface, and yet somehow many people agreed with it. Jar Jar Binks, the most reviled character of any movie franchise, is actually an all powerful Sith Lord. In this detailed fan theory, it states that Jar Jar is in fact the true apprentice of Palpatine and he acts like an idiot as a disguise. Bringing some weight to this theory is the fact that both Jar Jar and Palpatine come from the same planet, plus the fact that it was Jar Jar’s idea to give Palpatine emergency power, thus leading the way for him to become Emperor.
Due to the fact that Jar Jar Binks was such an unpopular character in The Phantom Menace, his role was reduced in later movies and it is very unlikely that Jar Jar will ever surface again. Still -as fan theories go – this could have been an interesting take on the character and would explain his behavior.
3. Finn’s Parents
At its heart, Star Wars is a family saga. The Skywalker family takes center stage in this ongoing ‘space soap.’ With many of its main characters intertwined with each other spanning both the light side and the dark side as they battle across the galaxy.
So when new characters were revealed, speculation went into overdrive as to who these characters would be linked to. With Kylo Ren’s heritage quickly announced and Rey also being linked to the Skywalker clan, we’re left with Finn. Many rumors were raised about his family, ranging from Lando Calrissian, Mace Windu and even Han Solo! What we now know is that Finn was raised and trained as a stormtrooper.
2. Luke Kills Han
This rumor was too crazy to be true. It would have been entertaining to watch but one, it was just a theory and two, it would have been too devastating and dark for the younger viewers.
No one would ever be able to handle the fact that Luke killed Han, but this was yet another crazy fan theory that surfaced. Han was trying to protect Kylo Ren, and save him from the dark side. Luke is upset by the ‘betrayal’ of his friend and kills Han out of anger. Han begins to beg Luke as he is running out of breath to spare his son’s life. Luke agrees but would later regret it when Kylo Ren becomes the next evil force of the galaxy.
1. Luke Has Turned To the Dark Side
Probably the most plausible and even most likely of all the rumors: the original Star Wars trilogy saw everyone pulling at Luke in order to claim him from Obi Wan and Yoda on the light side to Darth Vader and The Emperor on the dark side. Luke’s tragic family history could have easily pushed Luke too far and caused him to give into his anger and the dark side.
When the first images of Kylo Ren were shown, many fans thought it was Luke under that mask and he himself would be the dark overlord of the new trilogy. We can now put those rumors to rest as we now know this isn’t true. Although it’s still unclear as to Luke’s state of mind and even what he’s been up to since Return of the Jedi, we know for sure that he hasn’t been taken by the dark side of the force.
