There isn’t a whole lot we don’t know about Angelina Jolie already. I mean she is one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood. And rightfully so, given her acting career, where she’s won an Academy Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and three Golden Globes. That’s quite a bit of hardware for a 41-year-old actress; one who’s appeared in films like Gia, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Salt among many others.
It was, however, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) that established her presence in Hollywood. But she’s so much more than just an actor; she can direct, too. She directed Unbroken and In The Land of Blood and Honey.
It’s thanks to these movies that we’re so obsessed over Jolie. It’s thanks to her career that the public knows she’s a humanitarian who represents the UN as one of its Goodwill Ambassadors. It’s also thanks to her career that we’re obsessed with “Brangelina,” her highly publicized relationship to Brad Pitt.
But what truly makes Jolie an interesting character in the world of Hollywood is perhaps the little known facts about the actress. Despite the spotlight in which she basks, there’s a lot you may not have known about Jolie.
Here are 10 Shocking Things You Didn’t Know About Angelina Jolie.
10. Suicidal Thoughts
Though she didn’t have a tough upbringing, Angelina Jolie suffered from what is known as suicidal depression as a teenager. The actress has been quite open about her childhood in several interviews with magazines and entertainment media outlets. Jolie experienced the mental illness when she was a teenager trying to get modelling assignments.
According to allwomenstalk.com, Jolie would harm herself with sharp objects. “For some reason, the ritual of having cut myself and feeling the pain, maybe feeling alive, feeling some kind of release, it was somehow therapeutic to me.”
We’re glad she didn’t succumb to depression, instead carving out an impressive career in Hollywood.
9. Surprised She’s Living Past 40
This tidbit puts her decision for undergoing a double mastectomy in 2013 into perspective. Brad Pitt recently opened up to the Wall Street Journal, while promoting the film By the Sea, about all things Jolie, including her mother’s death in 2007.
“This is a woman who had watched her mother, aunt and grandmother become sick and eventually succumb, all at an early age,” he said of his wife. “Her drive, her absolute value in herself, is defined by the impact she can have during her time here — for her kids and for the underprivileged and those suffering injustices.”
He said she never imagined herself living past 40. Wow.
8. Childhood Crush On Spock
When she was a child, the actress had two very interesting, and unexpected, crushes. She crushed on Star Trek’s Spock, according to Vogue.com. “He was so repressed,” Jolie told John Stewart, now former host of The Daily Show back in 1999. “You just wanted to make him scream.”
If that wasn’t weird enough, Jolie also crushed on a “psycho.” According to Vogue, she liked Pyscho’s Anthony Perkins. The crushes are, at first, a surprise to those of us who don’t know her on a personal level. The crushes themselves? Not so much. She’s always been a dark, mysterious woman.
7. Music Video Vixen
Here’s something very few people know about Angelina Jolie. Unless you’re a music video aficionado, you wouldn’t have known that the actress has appeared in several music videos! She’s appeared in Meat Loaf’s “Rock And Roll Dreams Come Through,” Lenny Kravitz’ “Stand by my Woman” and The Rolling Stones’ “Anybody Seen my Baby” as a stripper.
Her music video days happened during a time Jolie was trying to establish herself in Hollywood. What better way to get your name out there than appearing in music videos. It was only a matter of time before someone noticed her beauty.
6. Told To Lose Weight When She Was A Thin 14-Year-Old
Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Jolie, convinced her then 14-year-old teenager to model. She’s openly remarked about what she deemed as a negative experience. According to Vogue, it’s what connected her so much to the role of Gia Carangi, a troubled model, in the movie Gia.
“I tried modeling when I was 14 and failed miserably,” Jolie told the New York Times. “Like Gia, I was a bit of a dirty punk, but it was interesting to clean up and start feeling like a girl. I was told I had all these problems I needed to fix. I was told to lose weight, and I was thin already. They actually put me in a room in a bathing suit and measured every part of me. I felt terrible.”
5. Baby Photos Worth More Than Average Celebrity’ Home
After Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt became a couple in the early 2000s, it was only a matter of time the pair would start a family. They did just that, welcoming their daughter Shiloh into the world in 2006. Of course, every entertainment publication wanted the couple’s baby photos. According to Vogue, they sold it to People Magazine for a reported $4.1 million before donating the entire sum to charity.
When she had twins in 2008, the photos were sold for a whopping $11 million, a sum which Vogue states is a record for most expensive baby pictures. The money went to charity. Good for you Brad and Angelina.
4. Jolie Reportedly Doesn’t Have A Publicist Or Manager
Several reports in Hollywood credibly suggest that Jolie represents herself when attending meetings or events. Who needs a manager or publicist when you’re as smart as Jolie, right? Thewrap.com reported she’s very hands on when it comes to projects.
“She turned up in my office with the location, photos, storyboards, casting information,” said movie producer Graham King, referring to a meeting he had with Jolie over a movie called In The Land of Blood and Honey. “The train was leaving the station. When she said, ‘I’d love for you to produce this movie,’ I was already hooked …Whether it’s interviews, photo shoots or directing films, she gets involved herself.”
3. Married Billy Bob In Blue Jeans
When Jolie decided to tie the knot with actor Billy Bob Thornton in 2000, following a two-month relationship, she wore blue jeans on her wedding day. The two eloped! Both Thornton and Jolie looked anything but hot shot actors.
Recently, the reverend who married the former couple had this to say about Jolie when interviewed by the Daily Mail: “I was glad Angelina married Brad, I like Brad Pitt, his movies and he’s a real decent human being and she is too.”
Not sure Jennifer Aniston fans would agree with that sentiment!
2. Jolie The Funeral Director?
We can’t say we’re that surprised Jolie considered becoming a funeral director, especially considering the nature of her dark roles when starting out in the movie business.
She told 60 minutes in 2011 that her mind was set because of a family death and how poorly the funeral was handled. “I thought I could do better, so I got a home course when I was about 14. It sounds like this very strange, eccentric, dark thing to do but in fact I lost my grandfather and was very upset with his funeral. If this whole acting thing didn’t work out that was going to be my path.”
“…”How somebody passes and how family deals with this passing and what death is should be addressed in a different way. If this whole acting thing didn’t work out that was going to be my path.”
Thankfully, she opted for a different, more lucrative career.
1. Rosie O’Donnell and Angelina Jolie Romantically Linked?
The former talk show host seems to think so. EOnline reported that O’Donnell thought “there was something there” between the two when appearing on The Howard Stern Show on Sirius Satellite.
“She gave me her phone number,” Rosie said. “We talked on the phone two or three times, but that was that. There was a tentative plan to have dinner that never came through.”
O’Donnell was kind of intimidated by Jolie. “She’s scary in a sexual kind of way. I have dreams about her a lot still.”
For her part, Jolie hasn’t publicly commented on the rumoured link up.
