When we were children, adults warned us about the dangers of drinking and smoking. We saw frightening pictures of damaged livers, hearts and brains and then, vowed to never indulge. Fast-forward 10 years later, young people are faced with temptation and begin to have urges of wanting to experiment with drugs. When young adults leave home, at times, they can be motivated to do what society or what “the streets” are doing around them. In short, every human being faces the pressure of “fitting-in.”

Some people understand how to use drugs with caution and in moderation, but other people can go over-board and will have a slew of  life-threatening problems awaiting them. Celebrities seem to have a tremendously difficult time staying sober. They must deal with the pressures of fame and the responsibility of money. People indulge in drugs for various reasons. Some people have the fear of being boring in social settings and want to appear easy-going, while others may be suffering from physical and mental anxieties and desire quick solutions.

Nevertheless, alcohol and other drugs can be used for an occasional good time or can lead someone into a rehabilitation center due to abuse. Drugs can give an appealing illusion. A drug-of-choice that provides a temporary relief from an undesirable situation can seem miraculous at first, however its user often wants its euphoric effects for a lifetime. Facing a problem head-on is the only way to solve it and many find that a harsh truth to bear. Alcohol and other drugs can give someone an interesting story to tell their children, but it’s best to view controlled substances and other potent things in a mature manner.

10. Calvin Harris

Named the highest paid DJ by Forbes.com for the second year in a row, Calvin Harris is truly one unique man. Taylor Swift’s boyfiend makes a staggering $66 million a year and faces the temptation of drugs every day. He has been quoted saying, “I started off not drinking when I was DJing… I realized the main job of a promoter is to get the DJ drunk. This was a problem to start with.”

Harris recalls that when he first stopped drinking, promoters and staffers were offended when he declined offers to drink after shows. However, Harris is a man that walks to the beat of his own drum and gracefully endures the pressures of “fitting in.” He said, ‘‘these days they know beforehand… I feel better not drinking. I remember what’s happened and put in a better performance.” Harris has been sober since 2009.

9. Ozzy Osbourne… And His Kids

Ozzy Osbourne is a celebrated rock star. With his band Black Sabbath, he has sold over 70 million records worldwide. Ozzy credits his wife Sharon Osbourne for getting and keeping him sober after years of using alcohol and cocaine while on tour. In April 2013, Ozzy suffered a relapse, for which he has apologized to his family and friends. Since his relapse, Ozzy has defeated his inner demons.

In 2014, he talked about sobriety being a priority in his life and was quoted saying, “I really love being sober.” Although overcoming the reckless life of a rocker, Ozzy had to watch his adult kids, Kelly and Jack Osbourne struggle with drug addiction. In 2009, Kelly Osbourne entered a rehabilitation center for the second time due to abusing painkillers. Since then, she has praised her one-month rehab experience for helping her regain a sober lifestyle. Meanwhile, Jack Osbourne suffered from depression as a child and became an addict of prescription pills. After various detoxing rehabilitation programs, he is sober and now has a beautiful family. His father still attends Alcohol Anonymous meetings and commends both of his children for overcoming drug abuse. Good luck to Ozzy and the entire Osbourne family!

8. Macklemore

The Grammy-award winning rapper has been very public about his recent struggles with drug abuse. The rapper has told numerous media outlets that he has struggled with sleeping pills and marijuana addiction. Macklemore decided to go sober in 2008. However, he blames fame for his recent relapse telling Complex magazine, “the pressure and the fame – everything…having no privacy…the criticism, and the lack of connection, and the lack of meetings…I just wanted to escape.”

Last September, Macklemore once again pledged sobriety and gives thanks to his fiancée. He’s been quoted saying, “Since I heard that Tricia was pregnant, I was like, I need to grow up right now.” Macklemore and his musical partner Ryan Lewis are said to be about 75 percent finished with their sophomore album, which remains untitled, but is scheduled to come out later this year.

7. Russell Brand

Russell Brand, ex-husband of Katy Perry, suffered from a heroin and alcohol addiction. After the drug overdose and eventual death of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, the “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” actor went on Oprah’s network OWN to discuss his trials and tribulations with drugs. The comedian confessed how drugs were no laughing matter.

He urges people to understand the seriousness of drugs. He described his first experience with heroin as blissful, however later explained how the drug put him through a downward spiral. Brand now acts as a “sponsor” for numerous people during the rehabilitation stage of their recoveries. Brand has been sober since 2002.

6. Amanda Bynes

Amanda Bynes is a very good actress. Many people won’t know or acknowledge this, because Bynes had an embarrassing, high-profile downfall with drugs. In 2013, she was placed in a psychiatric ward and later a rehabilitation center. She infamously called beautiful celebrities like Rihanna “ugly” via twitter and was kicked out of fashion school due to attending classes high.

Her mental breakdown seemed to last forever. On February 24, 2014, the She’s the Man actress hit rock bottom and was arrested for driving under the influence. Currently, Amanda’s parents are proud to report that she has made huge strides. Inside sources and relatives have reported that Bynes spends quiet evenings reading and doing yoga. Bynes also has been reported to have aspirations to attend college in California. Bynes has been sober since late 2014.

5. Robin Thicke

Ever since he and Grammy-award winning producer Pharrell were sued for music copyright infringement, Robin Thicke’s career has deteriorated. Before losing himself to drugs, Thicke was a respected and adored soul singer. In 2013, Thicke “crossed-over” to the pop charts with the #1 smash hit “Blurred Lines.” After losing in court to Marvin Gaye’s estate for plagiarizing the song “Got To Give It Up,” Thicke painfully confessed during a deposition that he was “high and drunk all last year.”

To cope with the boom in his music career and his increased fame, he numbed his emotions with Vicodin and vodka. He not only added no contributions to writing his most popular song, but also was “high” through the entirety of its creation. To add insult to injury, his beautiful wife, Paula Patton, divorced him after being mortified by his and Miley Cyrus’s MTV performance. Thicke embarrassingly and courageously tried to win his family back with his worst album to date. After the poor commercial success of “Paula,” Thicke is attempting to rejuvenate his reputation. On August 6, 2015, he released a new single featuring Nicki Minaj called “Back Together.” On Good Morning America, Thicke explained, “I just heard this idea of getting back together and getting yourself back together and, you know, what I was going through at the time I really related to that and connected with it… [The song is] more about the theme of getting yourself back together with love and partnership.” Thicke claims to have gotten sober. He’s a great artist, so I’ll be pulling for him.

Justin Bieber became famous and wealthy at a very early age. He handled it as best as he could. However, during his teenage years Bieber’s mistakes were often documented and he constantly made poor decisions. A matured Bieber, now 21, has even teamed up with a pastor to seek guidance and forgiveness for his past ways. The pop sensation has a new album in the works and his loyal fan base is confident that it will impress listeners and silence skeptics. America is the land of opportunity and second chances, therefore the Canadian-born singer should be optimistic that he can recapture the nation’s heart.

Eminem is proud to be sober and he should be. During the early 2000s, he struggled with a prescription pill addiction. In 2009, the legendary rapper released his sixth studio album called “Relapse”. The album’s reveals Eminem’s deep frustrations with drug abuse. The follow year, the MC released the album “Recovery.” In the hit song “Not Afraid,” he raps, “It was my decision to get clean, I did it for me/Admittedly I probably did it subliminally for you/So I could come back a brand new me. ”

He bravely opened up about his drug addiction claiming that it nearly lead him to an early death. In the documentary How to Make Money Selling Drugs, Marshall Mather’s is quoted saying, “When I took my first Vicodin, it was like this feeling of ‘Ahh.’ Like everything was not only mellow, but [I] didn’t feel any pain,” he says. “I don’t know at what point exactly it started to be a problem. I just remember liking it more and more.” In Eminem’s darkest moments, he was taking up to 20 prescription pills a day. He recounts how he hit rock bottom when his organs started to fail and had to be rushed to the emergency room. The revered rapper has been clean for over nine years. He thanks his fans and his strong will for getting him clean.

Johnny Manziel is his name, but sports fanatics have nicknamed this sensational quarterback “Johnny Football.” He won the coveted Heisman trophy as a red-shirt freshman at Texas A&M for his magnificent throwing arm, remarkable speed and leadership skills. Numerous celebrities like LeBron James and rapper Drake approached Johnny Manziel for pictures and conversation. The young football star was invited to parties and festivities.

Sports pundits like Skip Bayless applauded Manziel’s bravery and maturity. Since his treatment, Johnny Manziel says that he is a changed man. He has dropped his infamous money-sign celebratory routine and once again the phrase “Johnny Football” was trending on twitter after throwing for a touchdown during this year’s NFL pre-season. The future is bright for this now sober standout quarterback.

Sobriety was a must and a remarkable triumph for this one individual. This dare devil who still has “plenty of crazy [left in him]” is none other than the man named Stephen Glover, aka Steve-O! Due to his wild antics he has given the world reasons to relax, laugh and enjoy life. Many of Steve-O’s chaotic stunts involved him putting himself into dangerous, life-threatening situations such as stapling his testicles to his leg.

It has been reported that on a numerous of occasions, Steve-O was either “high” or drunk while attempting his stunts; however he refutes those claims and credits being an “attention whore” the sole reason for his profession. Steve-O has been quoted saying, “I was doing so many drugs that I literally started hearing voices.” The effects of drug abuse caused for concern and thankfully Steve-O eventually decided to change his life around for the better. Health and well-being are now top priorities. Needless to say, Steve-O is still having lots of fun making people laugh. Whenever he’s not performing outlandish stunts he does stand-up comedy in Las Vegas. Stephen “Steve-O” Glover has been sober since 2008. He also has become a dedicated vegan. He says his new lifestyle is “rewarding” and “worth it”.
