These are the men who have inspired and challenged us the most. They are the ones who have influenced the public with their words and work, with some becoming icons in their own right.  They are the top ten most influential men in America today.

1. Marc Andreessen

Remember Netscape? It was the first widely used web browser, before the likes of Internet Explorer, Mozilla and Opera came along. Marc Andreessen, an American entrepreneur and software engineer, developed Netscape. While newer browsers have since displaced it, Andreessen has remained and continues to play an active role in technological entrepreneurship through his Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm called Andreessen Horowitz. He is also credited with the establishment of Opsware, a software company now owned by Hewlett Packard, and Ning, a company that can be used as a platform for social network sites.  He sits on the board of Facebook, Hewlett Packard and eBay. He is deservingly one of the few members of the World Wide Web Hall of Fame.

2. Warren Buffett

The man considered the most successful investor of the past century, Warren Buffett is an American business magnate who is the chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. He is one of the richest people in the world and is often called the Sage of Omaha. He is known for being frugal and his adherence to value investment. He is also a noted philanthropist, promising to donate up to 99 percent of all his money.

3. Ron Fouchier

Ron Fouchier is a virologist who has risked the danger of the possibility of being exposed to a virus. He has studied the bird flu virus without minding the likelihood of contracting the virus himself.  The work he is doing is important because it is the only way to analyze the strength of the virus and to discover possible cures for it. He believes that mankind will face a bigger problem if nothing is done to study the virus.

4. Jeremy Lin

Jeremy Lin is an American sportsman of Taiwanese descent who plays professionally in the National Basketball Association. Though he received no scholarship offers out of high school, he persevered and went on to play for Harvard University. He failed to get drafted in the NBA after graduation, but he kept trying out until he got a contract with the Golden State Warriors. He was then cut from the team, and was likewise waived by the Houston Rockets. He then joined the New York Knicks, where he initially did not get any playing time. Injuries to key players finally allowed Lin to play, and he took full advantage of it, leading the team to an improbable win streak that captured the world by storm.  It was called Linsanity, and with the help of New York’s media, everyone was talking about it. He was traded to the Rockets before the start of the current season, finally getting a fat contract. The devout Christian is proof that perseverance does pay off.

5. Barack Obama

Barack Obama is the first African American to become President of the United States. He was born in Hawaii and studied in Columbia and Harvard. He was an Illinois state senator for 12 years, even as he taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago. His meteoric rise in politics culminated in 2008 when he won the nomination of the Democratic Party, before winning the presidential election against John McCain. He got re-elected in 2012 after beating Mitt Romney in a bitterly fought contest.

6. Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney is a product of Brigham Young and Harvard University. He spent two years in France as a Mormon missionary in the late 60s. He was co-founder and head of Bain Capital, one of the largest private equity firms in the country. Romney is active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He later served as governor of the state of Massachusetts and as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Winter Olympics of 2002.

7. Donald Sadoway

Donald Sadoway is the John F. Elliott Professor of Materials Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is an expert in the field of batteries and portable power sources. He is known as the man who makes chemistry lessons sexy and interesting, with his classes attracting more than half of MIT’s freshman class. Even Bill Gates once sat-in in one of Sadoway’s class. Sadoway usually spices up his lectures with science histories and Nobel Prize winners. Lectures are introduced by music that has relevance to the day’s topic. They are then concluded with some notes on materials that are culturally relevant.

8. Louis Szekely

Louis Szekely is a stand up comedian who stars in, writes, produces, directs and edits the hit comedy from FX called Louie. The show has garnered critical acclaim and considerable fan following.  He is known for adopting a do-it-yourself method of production and distribution, proving it can be successful through last year’s Live at the Beacon Theatre, which won for Szekely an Emmy award.

9. Tim Tebow

Tim Tebow is an American football quarterback and a devout Christian who shows his devoutness regularly by kneeling down on one knee in what is now known as Tebowing. He had a very successful career in college, winning the national championship with the University of Florida in 2007 and 2008. He also won the coveted Heisman Trophy in 2007. He was then drafted by the Denver Broncos, which he led to several improbable come from behind victories that led to a short playoff run. Still, his unorthodox style forced the Broncos to look for a more conventional quarterback to replace Tebow. Tebow then signed with the New York Jets, where he plays back up to Mark Sanchez.

10. Harvey Weinstein

Harvey Weinstein is a film and Broadway producer. He serves as co-chairman of The Weinstein Company, a film production company he founded with his brother. Weinstein has won both Oscar and Tony Awards for producing movies like Shakespeare in Love and plays like The Producers and Billy Elliot.
