Do you remember the top-notch supermodels of yesteryear? Sure, now we have Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, but before that there were the front-runners of the modeling industry. Models such as Tyra Banks, Janice Dickinson, and Twiggy. Are you wondering what happened to these women? Of course you are, that’s why you are looking at our list of 20 Insane ‘Where Are They Now’ Stories About Retired Models.
It’s always interesting to see what famous figures have done after their popularity fizzled out. That is not to say that these ladies are no longer famous or admired. In fact, a lot of them are still doing great work, and some of them still do some modeling here and there! Even as they continue into middle age, they are still going strong and proving that a woman can be gorgeous, intelligent, and independent. We love seeing these former models as mothers, wives, humanitarians, business women, and more. Even so, there are a few women here who have had some struggles. Substance abuse, scandals, and divorce have thrown a monkey wrench in their lives, so let’s hope they can bounce back from it.
So, if you want to be inspired and intrigued by these retired models, then sit back and take a look.
20. Naomi Campbell
Naomi Campbell is now well-known for being a diva (remember when she was nabbed for throwing her cell phone at an assistant?) Yet to her credit, Campbell is still out there in the modeling industry, giving advice to those younger supermodels, such as Gigi Hadid. Even so, Campbell has been romantically linked to unsteady relationships (Mike Tyson, Usher) and cocaine addiction. She also became known for being high-maintenance and shouting at others (sometimes with violence and aggressiveness.) There is a lot of pent-up anger just boiling over in Campbell, it seems. She needs to chill with the kicking, cursing, and spitting at employees and authorities, or she’ll be hit with another assault charge.
19. Cindy Crawford
It turns out that Cindy Crawford may never retire. While she could have comfortably retired a long time ago, she continues to take on new ventures and explore the possibilities. Hey, we can get behind that! This is a former model who has delved into entrepreneurship and the business world like she is the queen of the world! And she is loving it. Now she gets to be on the other end of the fashion and beauty industry, and helping shape a new era of fantastic models. She looks absolutely gorgeous, too, so those younger models better watch out!
18. Christy Turlington
It has been almost 3 decades since Christy Turlington was known as a total “it” girl in the modeling world, but she is still going strong today! The former model recently appeared on the cover of The Wall Street Journal and yes, she was looking mighty fine. She says that she doesn’t miss those old days of modeling, and besides, now she is very busy with her own charity, Every Mother Counts. At 47 years old and the mother of 2 grown children, we suspect that Turlington knows a thing or two about motherhood. This leggy model may not be posing for Calvin Klein anymore, but she is still breathtaking.
17. Linda Evangelista
We wonder what Linda Evangelista was thinking when she hit the half-century mark last year. She is considered to be one of the “original” models who burst onto the fashion scene during the 1980s and 1990s. The Canadian model has even been featured on some 600 magazine covers! She is still looking super-stylish, and while she no longer needs to practice her “walk,” she is still posing for advertisements and publications, serving as a face for L’Oreal, NARS, and Chanel, among others. Besides that, she is a gorgeous mommy to a lovely 8-year-old boy. What a beautiful transition for her!
16. Stephanie Seymour
It’s a rough life for a model, at least if you are Stephanie Seymour. The 47-year-old has been riddled with substance abuse problems and recently checked into a rehab facility for her issues. She used to be a Victoria’s Secret model, but now she will be spending her time in therapy, trying to purge herself from the booze. We really hope that she can turn things around. Stephanie is clearly talented and was once a cover girl for Vogue, as well as a go-to model for Sports Illustrated and Playboy. The past few years have been a whirlwind and also include a divorce from her husband, Peter Brant, in 2010. She is currently in rehab, and we wish her the best.
15. Rachel Hunter
Just look at Rachel Hunter now, and you will still see a beautiful, vibrant woman. She may not be a supermodel anymore, but she is still a looker, and probably will be for life. She is also a mother and is now middle-aged (can you believe it?). She became known in the 1980s and 1990s for her beachy waves, bikini body, and luscious New Zealand accent. While she was not always dreaming of modeling, it was a career choice that made money. She ended up doing it for 30 years! Now she wants a new job, and given her success, it is easy to have confidence in her!
14. Kathy Ireland
Much like Cindy Crawford, Kathy Ireland spent her later years working in the business world. In fact, she has amassed a net worth of $420 million! Her company, Kathy Ireland Worldwide, is a wonderland where Internet users can scroll through business news, lifestyle advice, and more. Ireland also has a series of resorts and properties across the globe, which are popular for weddings and honeymoons. Her publishing branch is called Bendon, and she also spends some time on the boob tube as well. That’s pretty impressive, considering that she was drooled over in Sports Illustrated and Playboy. She even partners with artists such as Janet Jackson.
13. Jill Goodacre
2015 was a good year for former supermodel Jill Goodacre. Her adoring hubby, Harry Connick Jr., posted a cute Instagram photo of the couple to honor their 21st anniversary. The two of them are the parents of three lovely daughters, and while Jill was once a Victoria’s Secret model, we are not so sure if her kids are going down the same career path. Either way, it seems apparent that Jill is a great mother and wife. She is also an actress, and spent her time on the silver screen after modeling. Now it looks as though she is living life more on the down-low.
12. Carla Bruni
At age 48, Carla Bruni is not contending for a spot on the runway anymore, but she is not totally out of the spotlight. The former model is now working as a singer and humanitarian. In fact, she sang for Nelson Mandela back in 2009. She released her fourth album in 2013 and is now admired for her looks and her voice. She is the famous wife of Nicolas Sarkozy, and is often chided for her choice in husband. She also dealt with some scandals, such as her nude photographs and auctions of her wardrobe. Even so, she does great charity work, helping especially with HIV/AIDS awareness among women and children.
11. Carol Alt
She was internationally recognized and now she is a beautiful face for the raw-food movement. Carol Alt could pretty much sell anything with her good looks, but she is totally backing her raw lifestyle and she even hosts A Healthy You & Carol Alt. She has a book of the same name, in which she details her healthy lifestyle and pushes for raw foods. Besides modeling, she also appeared in a number of films through the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Another position to add to her resume is Grand Marshal, an honor that was bestowed upon her at the New York City Steuben Day Parade in 2006.
10. Elle Macpherson
Pretty much everyone knows of Elle Macpherson. She was nicknamed “The Body” and throughout her career has been sprawled out on numerous magazine covers. Even into her 50s, she is still one of the hottest ladies we can think of. We mean, come on, she was prancing around in a bikini at 51 years old! What is the secret to her middle-aged beauty? Apparently, it is balancing her pH levels and working out 6 days a week. This girl is athletic! She also stays away from red meat, wheat, and dairy. Hey, that makes us want to buy her Super Elixir Nourishing Protein powder!
9. Paulina Porizkova
Paulina Porizkova is a woman who keeps it real. She was super successful during the 1980s, posing for Sports Illustrated, and working in ads for Estee Lauder, among others. She even judged on American’s Next Top Model and became the face of skin-care line Rx Genesys. Even so, she has become outspoken about her hate for Botox and other beauty “enhancements,” stating that she feels sorry for models these days, who are under so much pressure to be absolutely perfect. Some may even resort to going under the knife or using other extreme measures. Now in her 50s, Paulina feels confident in who she is, and that is definitely attractive.
8. Janice Dickinson
Has Janice Dickinson ever not been a hot mess? Sure, she has natural beauty, but it is all covered up with her weird cosmetic surgeries. Janice was one of the “original” supermodels (and she will never back away from letting you know that). She was also a long-time judge on America’s Next Top Model, where she was often wacky and outspoken. She also appeared on Botched, a show about – you guessed it! – cosmetic surgery mishaps. Janice was also one of the women who has stepped forward to say that she was sexually assaulted by Bill Cosby.
Twiggy was so named for her willowy, waif-like figure, which was all the rage back in the 1960s. With her long eyelashes and slender body, she was the ultimate British supermodel. She also became a mainstay on America’s Next Top Model, working as a judge. Her iconic look is even referred to as the “Twiggy style,” and in her 60s now, she is still a delight to see. Her childlike wonder and breezy vibe helped her become the complete package in the modeling industry. She now has an HSN fashion line, as well as a fashion blog, and even an album: Romantically Yours.
6. Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks is one of the most well-known supermodels ever. She started America’s Next Top Model, and in recent years has been outspoken about embracing your true self, flaws and all. After gaining weight (and finally looking like an “average” woman) Tyra spoke out against the haters. She was also very open about the pressure to be thin in the modeling industry and mainstream society, and even shed light on her struggles to conceive. Good news though: Tyra and her boyfriend recently welcomed a baby boy into the world (via a surrogate mother.) The 42-year-old is one hot mama!
5. Amber Valletta
Amber Valletta was all the rage back in the 1990s, rubbing elbows with other top models. She has worked with so many fashion insiders and photographers and appeared in many ads and magazines. She recently spoke out about being photographed by so many people, stating that she thinks men can appreciate female beauty, but that they can’t relate to the internal workings of a woman. No duh! Well, the 41-year-old wife and mother is right, and she is still as beautiful as ever. Her magnificent aging is clearly being noticed, and just recently she had a cover shoot with Porter magazine.
4. Karen Mulder
Karen Mulder sort of slipped under the radar. She was an international top model back in her hey-day and now she is a 44-year-old mama. Nothing wrong with that. It’s just strange to see a lady who was once a hot young thing strutting around with her child (who is adorable, by the way). That isn’t to say that Mulder looks bad, actually it is quite the opposite. She’s hot! She still has a tight and toned figure and incredible fashion sense. Her hair is shorter, but hey, that could be a mom thing. Anyway, we applaud Mulder for being herself, embracing motherhood, and staying present.
3. Kristen McMenamy
Kristen McMenamy is another supermodel that was kind of forgotten in recent years. She reemerged in 2013 when she divorced her hubby, Miles Aldridge, whom she had been with for 17 years. She had her reasons though; Miles had cheated on her. Kristen has since moved on, and she is still glowing. Her daughter is too, and has followed in her mother’s footsteps. In fact, Kristen’s no-longer-little girl walked in a Marc Jacob’s fashion show – topless. Alrighty then! If Kristen is cool with it, then we guess that’s okay. As for the 51-year-old Kristen, she still does a bit of modeling work here and there, but is mostly low-key.
2. Niki Taylor
Niki Taylor once had a vibrant modeling career, and was signed by an agency when she was just 13 years old. She was even the 2nd-youngest model to be featured on the cover of Vogue. Then in 2001, she was involved in a serious car crash, which left her bedridden with a collapsed lung and damaged liver. Six weeks into a coma and 56 surgeries later, she started to rebound. Then in 2007, she filed a lawsuit against E! for “emotional distress.” Now, Niki is a wife, mother, and humanitarian. She also has a YouTube channel where she gives food, parenting, and beauty advice.
1. Bridget Hall
If you were paying attention to fashion in the 1990s, then you were watching Bridget Hall. Even at 35 years of age, she is still working her magic, and was called by Prabal Gurung in 2013 to be the face of the brand. Sensual and sassy, Hall was an admired model, and appeared in publications such as Sports Illustrated, ELLE, Allure, Vogue, and Harper’s Bazaar. Since her “comeback” in 2013, she has been considerably quiet, but she is still looked to for inspiration and advice on how to navigate the crazy world of modeling. So, don’t you dare forget about this woman!
