In the world of Hollywood, where creativity and eccentricity go hand in hand, strange behavior from its biggest stars shouldn’t be all that surprising. Yet, every time one of them acts out, the media goes into a frenzy and latches onto the incident like it’s the biggest news in history. Here are a few celebrities who have fallen victim to bad news reports about their behavior. Some were asking for it, while others just simply had what was supposed to be private and personal, flaunted in public.
He’s always in the midst of one controversy or another, from dissing Taylor Swift on stage to insisting he invented leather sweat pants to comparing himself to Jesus and Nelson Mandela. In fact, Kanye West has been called a jackass by President Obama himself and with due reason. In his concert last September 2014 in Sydney, West told everyone in the audience to stand up. When two of the audience members didn’t adhere to his request, West caused a scene, only to find out that they were in wheelchairs. His behavior was insensitive at best and outright heartless at worst.
She’s one of the biggest celebrities in the world, so it’s no wonder that Beyonce is forever under scrutiny. Her every move is literally observed by even the most casual of passersby, so she has to be mindful of every little step she takes. She was caught on video a few months back when she was watching a Brooklyn Nets game with her husband Jay-Z, whom she can be seen talking to on and off as the game progresses. But what happens during the lulls in their conversation is downright strange. She starts swaying and rocking her head from side to side, seemingly like there’s a tune playing inside her head. That must have been the case because there was no music whatsoever blasting from the stadium’s speakers! The video has gone viral along with many others of Bey acting strange.
For most stars, it’s a huge honor to be able to attend the biggest red carpet event of the year: the Oscars. It’s an even greater testament to one’s star power when he’s asked to be a presenter. So an actor usually gets himself familiar about the person or film or award he’s about to present, right? Not John Travolta, apparently. In the 2014 Academy Awards show, Travolta was to present Idina Menzel, who was to sing “Let It Go” from Frozen. Sure, her name is a bit unusual, but people know who she is. Travolta introduced her as Adella Dazeem. Adella Dazeem who?!
Though not as bad as the John Travolta-Adella Dazeem fib, Channing Tatum also fumbled a bit when he was presenter at the Oscars earlier this year. You’d think an A-list movie star like him would be confident and relaxed enough to present smoothly and slowly, but apparently, Tatum let his nerves get the better of him. He was tasked to present the details on the Oscars college program, but instead of delivering his lines smoothly, Tatum raced through his spiel while barely catching his breath, then exited the stage. The audience barely knew he was even up there.
Pity that Amanda Bynes’ once stellar career has plummeted to the ground in recent years. Bynes has displayed the oddest of behaviors on Twitter, where she tweeted that her father abused her then retracted those Tweets, saying a different part of her brain was telling her to say those things. She was also arrested for DUI and tossing drug paraphernalia out the window of her apartment. She was said to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, admitting it herself on Twitter, then taking back the statement hours later, saying her friends were messing with her phone and tweeted the message on her behalf. Needless to say, her parents now have control over her cash and say that she’s on the road to recovery.
Aside from being an amazing actor, James Franco is also known to be freakishly intelligent, having achieved much in the academic field. But even his biggest fans can’t deny that he’s a bit of a weirdo, probably due to his IQ and artistic juices. Who can forget his strange behavior when he hosted the Oscars a few years back with Anne Hathaway? But perhaps the most recent incident that put him on the spot was when earlier this year, he was embroiled in an Instagram scandal, wherein he tried to hit on a minor, a 17-year-old Scottish girl. He went so far as asking for her number, where she was staying, and if she was single, all the while not knowing that she was underage. Good thing he issued a public apology a few days later and admitted that he displayed poor judgement with regards to the incident.
Perhaps the pressures of fame were too much on a young guy like Shia LaBeouf when earlier this year, he started acting up, though no one knows if it was a publicity stunt or if he had simply had enough of the media hounding him. LaBeouf wore a paper bag over his head at a red carpet premier and the paper bag read, “I am not famous anymore.” Then he staged an art show called #IAmSorry, wherein he again wore a similar bag and stared at his audience through cut out holes. He also went on Twitter saying that he was retiring from all public life. But luckily, looks like he didn’t mean any of that because his career seems to be making a comeback.
After her stint as judge in American Idol, we haven’t heard much from Paula Abdul as of late. Sure, she’s hosted a reality show here and there, but she never stays. Though she comes off as very sweet and good-natured, everyone does have a strange side to them and given her topsy-turvy professional and personal life, Abdul is no exception. Earlier this year, Abdul was reported to be suing a tanning company, claiming that the attendants were negligent and caused her skin to burn severely. She said as a result, she went through massive mental and physical suffering and “loss of earning potential.” The incident happened in 2012, but why did she decide to sue two whole years later?
There’s only so much a young girl in the spotlight can take, especially one so famous so young like Selena Gomez. Aside from her demanding career, she also has an extremely controversial personal life, with her on-off relationship with Justin Bieber. In fact, she acted out on the pressures of the heart on Instagram, when she posted a video playing a melancholy tune with the caption “I don’t know. I’m on my way you know,” leading fans to assume that she was once again nursing a broken heart because of Bieber. She then uploaded a still of the video upside down, then an anonymous comforting text sent to her. Someone ought to tell her that there’s such a thing as oversharing, lest she be judged as odd.
He was famous back when he was a cutesy pre-pubescent boy with amazing hair and catchy songs. Little girls went gaga over Justin Bieber. But all his fans have since grown up and worse, outgrown him. So it looks as if Bieber has been resorting to desperate attention-grabbing stunts to remain in the spotlight. Last June, he released two videos using the very offending “N” word, the first one showing him making a joke about “black” people and the second, showing him changing the lyrics of his song to the “N” word. Then a month later, he got into a scuffle with Orlando Bloom in a restaurant, allegedly because Bieber made a lewd comment about Bloom’s ex-wife, Miranda Kerr. To make it worse, Bieber posted a photo of a bikini-clad Kerr on his Instagram, then later took it down.
Because of her outlandish behavior, Lindsay Lohan has been the target of paparazzi for years. From courtroom hearings to heated verbal attacks between her and her father, Lohan’s strange behavior shows no sign of abating. Back in June while in the posh department store Selfridge’s in London, Lohan reportedly streaked naked, shocking customers and the sales staff. While running around in her birthday suit through the department store, she was reportedly laughing hysterically the entire time!
Freddie Prinze Jr.
Seemingly out of the blue, Freddie Prinze, Jr. slammed his 24 co-star Kiefer Sutherland in July this year, saying that Sutherland was the most unprofessional actor he ever worked with. The attack seemed so random, considering the two worked together five whole years prior. Prinze went on to attack Sutherland below the belt, saying he shouldn’t have been pitted against an actor so short that he had to remove his shoes so he wouldn’t tower over Sutherland. Fox officials and the show’s other actors, however, defended Sutherland and said he was nothing but professional. It’s assumed that Prinze’s rants were alcohol-related, but the media doesn’t really know for sure.
She’s one of the most well-respected actresses in the industry and when Jacqueline Bisset picked up the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a series, miniseries or movie for Dancing on the Edge, the audience waited for her to deliver a lovely acceptance speech. But everyone was taken by surprise when she just sort of stood there, seemingly spaced out and stumbling over her words. During one particularly long pause, the orchestra started the play-off music because they thought she was done–but she just continued to ramble on and finally ended her awkward speech saying she loved everyone.
When director Michael Bay was invited to be a speaker at the Consumer Electronics Show, the biggest gadget expo in the world and held in Las Vegas, members of the media and industry experts eagerly awaited his presentation. However, the teleprompter started acting up during Bay’s presentation and he was thrown off guard. Rather than rolling with the program and just speaking spontaneously, Bay shuffled off the stage after mumbling, “I’m sorry.” He later attributed his behavior to a bad case of stage fright, saying live shows weren’t his thing.
He’s always been known to stir controversy, whether in the NBA or in Hollywood. The retired NBA star had gone to North Korea with some other players on a “mission of basketball diplomacy” and while they were there, Rodman was interviewed by CNN’s Chris Cuomo. Apparently induced with stress and alcohol, Rodman started yelling at Cuomo when the latter suggested to him to try to mediate the release of Kenneth Bae, an American imprisoned in the communist country. Rodman went on to say that he was no diplomat and it wasn’t his job to meddle in political affairs. He later apologized for his outburst.
Amidst rumors that Beyonce and Jay-Z’s marriage was on the rocks, a certain elevator incident further fanned the flames of the already red-hot gossip. Footage surfaced of Beyonce’s sister, Solange screaming and flailing wildly at brother-in-law Jay-Z in an elevator, while Beyonce just stood there passively, watching the scene unfold. Nobody knows what the fight was really about, but a joint statement was later released, stating that they worked through their differences as a family. Whether the rumor about the troubled marriage is true or not remains to be seen.
