Not all actors have perfect bodies. Like the rest of us, they have their flaws that they want to keep hidden from the public eye. Which is why when a nude scene is required of them in their roles, many of them opt to get a body double. Yes, there are some brave ones who have no qualms about baring it all in front of the cameras. Good on them for being confident and comfortable enough to do that.
But a majority of the Hollywood population would rather hire body doubles to pass as themselves. These actors have publicly admitted to using doubles.
She was practically still a child when she starred in her breakout role, the coming of age film, Blue Lagoon. One scene shows Brooke Shields skinny dipping in the sea and for a 14 year old, her body seemed surprisingly curvy. It was revealed later on that that wasn’t actually her swimming in all her naked glory. A stunt double who was undoubtedly older and curvier than the pre-teen Shields was tasked to do the deed.
In Pirates of the Caribbean 4, Penelope Cruz had to show some skin. Normally, she probably would have been up to the task, but seeing as she was heavily pregnant at the time of filming, she couldn’t shed that many clothes. So she called in her equally beautiful little sister, Monica Cruz to be her body double. She was the perfect double, having practically the same body type as her big sister.
For those who were surprised that normally conservative Catherine Zeta-Jones agreed to get naked in the movie, Traffic, you’re in for a disappointment. She later admitted that it was a body double that we all saw in the film and not actually her in the buff.
In the movie, Your Highness, there’s a scene where Natalie Portman’s character is wearing a thong and has her back to the camera as she prepares to dive into a river. So were those buttocks really hers? Yes and no, apparently. Portman said that it was really she who was standing by the river banks in the thong—but it was her stunt double who dove into the river. She said the water was too cold for her to plunge into.
Lap dances are tricky for actors to do because 1) your body has to be pliant enough to grind seductively and 2) you should have a figure to-die-for. In the movie, Domino, Keira Knightley used a body double during her lap dance scene. But contrary to the belief that she didn’t do it because of moral reasons, it was actually because of lack of confidence on her part. Knightley claimed that she wasn’t curvy enough to be able to pull off a sexy dance.
Isla Fisher has always played ditzy, endearing, and pretty wholesome roles. So when her role in Wedding Crashers required her to go topless, the actress balked. She felt that going bare chested in front of the camera would tarnish her image as a comedic actress, saying that she may not be seen as funny anymore. So she requested for a body double to take over.
In the movie, You, Me and Dupree, Owen Wilson showed his bootie to the audience. But no, it was just a body double and while he had implied that he wouldn’t have minded showing his actual butt to the cameras, it was the decision of the director not to. Wilson jested, “I don’t know how to interpret that.”
Like his brother Owen, Luke Wilson used a body double for one of his movies, My Super Ex-Girlfriend. He felt his body wasn’t athletic-looking enough to show onscreen and so he personally handpicked his body double, making sure the guy had a fit physique.
In perhaps her most skin-baring role, Mila Kunis didn’t actually show much of her own skin in the movie, Friends With Benefits. Kunis said the furthest she went was showing some side boob, but for the rest of her sex scenes, she requested for a body double. Her reason for this was that she didn’t want to run the risk of overexposure by baring too much of herself in front of the cameras all at once. She claimed she thoroughly enjoyed screening different women with butts that could pass as hers.
How many women can proudly claim to have been Meryl Streep’s body double and using the experience as a launching pad into acting? Catherine Bell, who starred in JAG and The Last Man Standing was the legendary actress’ nude body double in the movie, Death Becomes Her. Talk about an unusual way to start off a career in show business!
In Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Kevin Costner didn’t actually bare his backside to the cameras in the waterfall scene. That was actually a body double, though the reason for not letting Costner do the scene himself is unknown, given he showed his rear end in Dances with Wolves.
When you’re playing a prostitute, it’s practically taken for granted that you’d have to show a lot of skin. But Julia Roberts wasn’t comfortable with doing the semi-nude scenes. She had a body double cover for her and it’s pretty obvious because the character’s body seemed more curvaceous than Roberts’ actual, slender frame. And another interesting tidbit: the movie poster that showed Roberts in boots, a tiny skirt, and a pink midriff? Photoshopped! The body wasn’t hers!
Considering she’s appeared practically naked and has done scarily realistic sex scenes, it came as a surprise when it was revealed that Angelina Jolie didn’t actually show her bum in the movie, Wanted. True enough, her character’s backside seemed a little too curvaceous for Jolie’s slender frame. Maybe she wasn’t comfortable enough to show her ass in that camera angle?
