How Well Do You Know Samuel L. Jackson?
Samuel L. Jackson has had one of the most prolific film careers of the last half-century. That’s not bad for a guy who didn’t start in earnest until he was 33 years old. Though he has a wayward credit in an independent blaxploitation film called Together for Days from 1972, nearly a decade went by before he started collecting bit roles in major films. Beginning with Ragtime in 1981, he has appeared in well over 100 titles. Though his first big break came with Pulp Fiction, Jackson had already accrued a respectable resume, swaying between big blockbusters like Jurassic Park and personal independent projects, many of which with Spike Lee behind the camera.
He most likely didn’t start sooner because he was too busy with activism and, well, a bit of domestic terrorism.
Jackson was a major figure in the civil rights movement, following Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. until that fateful day in April 1968. He was one of the ushers at his funeral. From there, the actor got more militant, taking hostage the Morehouse College (where he attended) board of trustees until they agreed to reform the school’s curriculum and governance.
He went on to work alongside other civil rights leaders such as Stokely Carmichael, and H. Rap Brown. It was then, according an interview in Parade, that Jackson began to feel empowered, particularly after his chapter of the Black Panters began buying guns. His mother pulled him out of activism after the FBI told her of his activities and their suspicion he wouldn’t survive the year.
Nevertheless, through his work with Lee and other important African American filmmakers, Jackson has left an important mark on both history and Hollywood.
