The Top 10 Most Expensive Panerai Watches. In 1860, an Italian named Giovanni Panerai established the Officine Panerai in Florence in Italy. The timepiece company eventually came under the control of his grandson, Guido Panerai. In 1900, the company became the official supplier of watches and precision instruments to the Regia Marina, or the Royal Italian Navy. Panerai only designed and manufactured the cases, while Swiss timepiece companies like Rolex S.A supplied the movement.

From the time of the Fascist government of Benito Mussolini in 1938 all the way up to 1993, Officine Panerai created around 300 watches, all of which were supplied to the Marina Militare of Italy. The partnership ended after naval specifications were changed, which made production of the watch cost-ineffective. Panerai thereafter decided to create timepieces for the civilian market instead.

The Compagnie Financiere Richemont S.A. bought the company in 1997. It has since designed and manufactured some of the most beautiful watches in the world.
