Shhh! Can you keep a secret? Although they do not talk about it, you might not know that men are just as insecure about their physiques as women are. From their eyes to their butts and all the way down to their calves, men have just as many problem areas, if not more than women do. Women compare their plastic surgeries like they compare manicures and pedicures. Men, however, like to keep their imperfections and procedures on the down low. Quite frankly, men are not likely to compare penises before they decide on what doctor to use for phalloplasty. If you didn’t know, a phalloplasty is penis enlargement surgery, which is probably the most embarrassing plastic surgery a man can have. What is the second most embarrassing? Breast reduction. Yes, men do get breast reductions. They also get liposuction on their love handles and even implanted abdominal muscles.
It’s no secret that men who get surgery on their fat bellies often also have fat wallets because these procedures don’t come cheap. When men can’t train it away, they have to pay it away in money and in recovery time. If you are a man who is considering surgery, you better be tough because many of these procedures such as gluteal enhancement (butt implants), have very painful recoveries.
Please note that costs vary from doctor to doctor. Costs are generally contingent upon where the surgery is performed. It’s a good idea to ask for personal recommendations when finding a surgeon, but considering most men don’t want to admit to having the procedures listed below done, it’s probably a better idea to ask a stranger on the internet, than one of your bros. One major requirement you should have when choosing a surgeon, is board certification. No one should die on the table trying to get better calfs, pecs or abs.
10. Breast Reduction: $1,500 to $5,000
Whether you call them man boobs or moobs for short, no guy wants to look like he needs a bra. Men develop breasts in two ways. Most commonly, men develop breasts as a result of weight gain. They can also develop a medical condition called gynocomastia where male breast tissue develops from a number of causes, having little or nothing to do with weight gain. While this understandably is an incredibly embarrassing problem, the solution is very easy and one of the least expensive cosmetic procedures. During the surgery, excess fatty tissue is removed and sometimes even liposuctioned out, depending on how much fat there is. The surgery takes between 60 and 90 minutes, and is performed under general anesthesia. It’s also a quick recovery, so in about a month, a man can get back to being more concerned about his girlfriend’s chest than his own.
9. Smart Liposuction: $2,500 to $5,000
Smart Liposuction is laser assisted liposuction. An improved liposuction procedure, the laser helps not only break down fat, but improve the appearance of the skin. This procedure is done pretty much wherever regular liposuction is performed, such as the abdomen, love handles, face, knees, thighs, butt or hips. Men are really keen on this procedure for love handles because no matter how much time you put in at the gym, it is impossible to exercise away all of the fat in that area. The duration of recovery time is contingent entirely on the procedure, which is done under general anesthesia
8. Abdominal Implants: $3,000
Abdominal implants are the fastest way to a six pack that money can buy, when exercise won’t achieve the results a man is looking for. This surgery is normally paired with abdominal liposuction or a tummy tuck procedure. Six to eight (if you want an eight pack) implants are inserted through the belly button and placed over the muscle. The implants are made of silicone and are designed to be flexible. The results of this surgery can be mixed. If a man maintains his weight loss, the procedure can look as natural as any implant can look. However, if he puts on weight in his middle again, these implants can make a man look as if he is wearing one of those silly shirts with painted on abs.
7. Calf Implants: $3,500
Calf implants were a huge secret among men until an episode of MTV’s True Life aired a few years ago. While a seemingly excessive procedure, calf implants are the perfect procedure for men who have seemingly perfected every other part of their body. During the procedure, the doctor inserts two silicone implants within the muscle. It’s a fairly easy process that only takes about two hours and can be done under local or regional anesthesia, although general anesthesia is offered as well. Recovery is slightly more complicated, as the legs need to be elevated for about a week. Although don’t worry, in six weeks patients can go back to kicking butt at the gym.
6. Chin/Jaw Augmentation: $4,000 to $7,500
Lots of men want a square jaw and pronounced chin to get a more masculine face, but aren’t born that way. Just look at men with perfectly masculine faces who the ladies fawn over like Adam Levine and Brad Pitt. While sometimes performed separately, these two procedures, chin implant and jaw augmentations are mostly done in conjunction with one another. The chin implant is placed under the chin and the face is cut. However, all of the cutting for a jaw augmentation is done inside the mouth and the implant is placed inside the lower lip. This prevents visible scaring. The patient is placed under general anesthesia for both of these surgeries.
5. Eyelift: $4,500 to $8,000
Too much partying with babes and bros can make a man look tired. An eyelift can change all that and make the face look younger. Men really should not be embarrassed about eye lifts, especially because George Clooney, who is arguably one of the most handsome men in the world, has had the procedure done. There are two kinds of eye lifts, upper and lower, but you can have one or both done at the same time. Since the eyelift is done in such a clearly fragile area, the patient is put under general anesthesia. After that, the recovery time is approximately a week and the pain is pretty minimal.
4. Gluteal Enhancement: $7,000 to $18,000
While women, are known to have gluteal enhancement procedures, it’s also a popular procedure among men. If you are a man who likes a big butt and cannot lie, but your own tush is lacking, gluteal enhancement also known as a butt implant is certainly an option. During the surgery, an implant is placed under the butt muscle. Healing isn’t an easy process and can take up to a month. For men who want to enhance their butts without going under the knife, there has been a surge of underwear with padded behinds that have recently come out on the market.
3. Pectoral Implants: $8,525
Pectoral Implants are silicone implants, which are inserted through the armpit and placed behind the muscle. They give volume and definition to man’s chest when exercise and weight lifting just won’t do it. This is also a great option for men who have deformed chests or cannot work on the muscle due to injury. This procedure is sometimes performed in conjunction with a male breast reduction to give a guy his dream chest. It is even rumored that Simon Cowell had pectoral implants put in when the press began to make fun of his flabby moobs.
2. Hair Transplant: $9,000
Although none of them will confess, lots of male celebrities have undergone hair transplantation including John Travolta, Elton John, and Jeremy Piven. If you need proof that Piven has had it done, watch the college classic PCU and compare that Piven to Ari Gold. You will be shocked. After using Rogaine and popping Propecia, the only true cure for baldness is a hair transplant. There is more than one method of hair transplant, but in short, under local anesthesia, hair follicles are transferred from a place hair is growing to a place hair is not growing. It isn’t terribly painful and the recovery time is only a week.
1. Penile Enlargement: $10,000 to $20,000
Penile enlargement is not only one of the most embarrassing procedures, it is one of the most expensive plastic surgeries performed on men. For obvious reasons, it is not frequently performed and rarely spoken of. Penile enlargement is an option for men who would like to be longer or wider. It is also performed on men who have been diagnosed with Erectile Dysfunction, when other options like pills including Viagra or Cialis, or pumps have failed. Silicone or sometimes plastic implants are inserted into the penis, increasing both girth and length at the same time. As with any other surgical implant, there are various sizes to choose from. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and healing time is only a few days, although the hard part of recovery is abstaining from sex for approximately six weeks.
