We here at The Richest often focus on the most ridiculous things in the world. We’ve looked at houses worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and one worth a billion; Antilla, in Mumbai, India. More recently, we checked out a few watches that are worth millions of dollars because knowing what to chuck money at when one wins the lottery is important. At that point, practicality is out the window and while some invest the money and live the rest of their lives on interest, plenty of lottery winners blow their money in a couple of years and end up back where they were.
But back to the original point, we often discuss the lavish, the expensive and the frivolous. In terms of one’s choice of home, yes, it is true that for tens of millions of dollars one can purchase a modern age castle with tennis courts, a bowling alley, a security system that looks like something out of science fiction and a robot that massages feet, cooks breakfast and comes with a “pleasure mode”. Okay, that last one may be an extrapolation. But the point has been made that more often than not, a huge, luxurious house will cost millions of dollars.
But this is not always the case, as there are plenty of amazing houses out there that are luxurious and rival celebrity homes, but cost under a million dollars. Here is our list of amazing luxurious houses that you, yes you, can actually afford. We will look at houses under a million dollars in awesome areas in the United States along with a couple from Europe and Canada.
13. B-4450 Tyndall Ave, Victoria, British Columbia
We’ll start our list off in the Great White North, in Victoria, British Columbia, a beautiful city in one of the nicest of the Canadian provinces. Parking space, privacy, tons of sleeping areas, hardwood floors and beautiful stonework inside the house are just the tip of the architectural iceberg. There are large trees around the perimeter of the property and a large workshop in the backyard. If you’re not sold yet, the property has a beautiful view of Mount Douglas and of course, a wraparound deck from which to enjoy said view. This nine bedroom home isn’t cheap but $779,900 (CDN) is a very reasonable price.
12. 15168 Fiddlesticks Blvd, Fort Myers, FL
With five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms, this house sells for $674,900 and comes with a membership to Fiddlesticks Country Club. There is a massive pool on the property, and inside the home there are a couple of living rooms that are perfect for entertaining, and a large kitchen with an island and plenty of counter space.
11. 5414 Sierra Brook Ct, Las Vegas, NV
If you ever wanted a place just outside of the hectic part of Las Vegas, but looks like a small resort designed for a family, this place may be just what you’re looking for. It costs less than a million, at about $750,000. Five bedrooms with four and a half baths is just the beginning, as the interior of the house has massive rooms, walk-in closets, a spa off the master bedroom, an incredible backyard with a massive pool that looks like something one would find in a resort in the Caribbean. Want more? There is a home theater room, a games room, and several other living spaces that can be put to almost any use.
10. Cargreen, River Tamar, Cornwall
At just over 600,000 British pounds, this property in Cornwall is getting close to our limit in terms of price but we couldn’t not include it. A converted mill, it has five massive bedrooms and tons of interior space. Furthermore, the home sits on the River Tamar and has a large boathouse. Given that it is a former mill, the house not only has large bedrooms, but also large areas perfect for entertaining and several suited to whatever hobbies a potential buyer might have.
9. 2313 Freedom Blvd, Watsonville, California
Watsonville is just to the south of San Jose for those of you who don’t know California. This Victorian era home is about 4,000 square feet, sits on .8 acres, and has plants and trees all over the beautifully decorated property. The property is basically one massive garden, and has a brick patio, and a fountain. There are six bedrooms, four full bathrooms and two halves. Built in 1910, there is also a massive activity room, many rooms for entertaining and of course, a gargantuan kitchen. The California home is on the market for $899,000.
8. 16230 34th Ave S, Seatac, WA
Located in one of Seattle’s most renowned suburbs, this custom built home was built in 2006 and has six bedrooms and four and half baths. It has been on the market for just under half a year. It features large rooms, a very nice deck in the backyard, and a large lot on top of 4,800 square feet of living space. There is also a large kitchen, a wet bar, walk-in closets in the master suite, along with a large shower and bath. For $729,000 this isn’t a steal by any means, but it is a solid price for a beautiful home with plenty of luxury.
7. Villa in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur
If you want the exact address for this gem of a home, find the name of the seller on french-property.com because the address and current owner are not publicly available. It sits on the beautiful Cote D’azure region of southern France and is situated just north of Cannes. The property itself features a beautiful swimming pool, tons of open space, gardens, tons of windows and sits on over a square kilometer of land. The asking price is half a million Euros and with the exchange rate to USD being about 1.06, that’s around $530,000.
6. 265 Sauve Rd, River Ridge, LA
One of the most aesthetically pleasing and historical suburbs of New Orleans is River Ridge. This Acadian style home (generally a mix of French and North American architectural elements) is on Sauve Road, the main route through this delightful little town. There is a great amount of living space with five bedrooms and four bathrooms, and more elegant entertainment space than one will know what to do with. The exterior of the property has plenty of garden space and massive, mature trees and of course, a two car garage. For $799,000 this is a great home but can be had by a normal person (non-celebrity) for between $3,000 and $4,000 per month, depending on mortgage terms.
5. 26 Black Duck Terrace, Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia
Why did we choose a small suburb about an hour outside of Halifax for our highest Canadian entry on this list? Because Canada’s real estate market is nothing short of a nightmare for anyone wanting to live in a nice place for a reasonable price. I’d have chosen a place in Toronto or Vancouver in a heartbeat, but even a dump in one of those cities goes for nearly a million.
So the east coast it is. The people are very nice out there anyways. It sits on about 2.7 acres of land which is beautifully landscaped and has multiple gardens. Inside, the house has six bedrooms and six bathrooms to match. There is a massive kitchen and several rooms that can be used to entertain. For $675,000 (CDN) it is as close to a resort as one can find in this beautiful part of Canada.
4. 8133 Wacobee Dr, Myrtle Beach, SC
While it used to be known as a major tourist trap, Myrtle Beach is still a popular destination for over 10 million people per year, but has some stunning real estate when you get a few miles away from the beachfront area. A 4,600 square foot beauty, this house boasts two two-car garages on either side of the front entrance, and five large bedrooms. On top of plenty of walk-in closets, the home also features a couple of large entertainment rooms, a game room, a full gourmet kitchen and a salt water pool. This is available to a potential buyer for just under $700,000,
3. 7514 SW 188th Terrace, Cutler Bay, Florida
While there are some places in Florida in which you could not pay me to live, Cutler Bay has a decent reputation and some beautiful properties. This 3,700 square foot home sits on a 8,500 square foot lot complete with a swimming pool, a full playground, tennis courts, a basketball court, and a full guest house.
The main house itself has granite counter tops, a massive chandelier at the front entrance, five bedrooms and five and half baths. This house is listed for $550,000 right now. With a thirty year mortgage, that is about a $2,000 per month payment.
2. London Road, Stretton On Dunsmore, Rugby
If you’re looking for an amazing rural property in Warwickshire that has two adjoined cottages on about a third of an acre of land, this place is for you. The structures are beautifully built and between the two, feature six bedrooms, two full bathrooms, three living areas and two kitchens. Possibly the most intriguing part of this home is the gardens that surround the property itself. Inside, most of the ceilings include open beams and amazing stone work in a couple of the bedrooms. At 425,000 pounds (640,000 USD), this house is definitely worth the price.
1. 43 Cedar Lawn Circle, Galveston, Texas
Well folks, seeing as this is three quarters of a million dollars, it is out of question for a lot of people, but a $2,700 to $2,900 monthly mortgage isn’t completely outrageous if you can come up with the $150,000 (20%) down payment. This ranch style home is over 6,000 square feet and sits on roughly an acre. There is a massive pool along with six bedrooms and nine bathrooms.
This property was built by Sam Maceo, the man credited with essentially building Galveston. The house also comes with a large guest house and a library, and was designed by the same man who designed a home for Frank Sinatra’s place in Palm Springs.
