There was a time not too long ago when dressing up in a costume was restricted to either Halloween or the privacy of your own home (we’ll spare you the details). However, these days a new craze is sweeping the nation and it’s only getting stronger and more popular. That craze is cosplay.
Each year more and more people are dressing up as their favorite characters; be it superheroes, anime or videogames, cosplay is the hottest hobbie in town.
With many events around the world giving people the opportunity to show off their creations and live out their fantasies, the mother of them all and the one we blame for this craze is Comic Con.
For many years Comic Con has given fans the chance to come together and live out their fantasies dressed as their favorite heroes, all the while marveling at their creations. When cosplay is done right it can look truly amazing, however when done wrong it’s beyond laughable.
With this list we look at 15 epic cosplay fails, and just for fun we will show you what they should look like when they’re done right.
15. Captain Planet
We jump into our list with many people’s favorite childhood hero. Captain Planet, along with his group of kids, made the world a better place. Tackling problems such as pollution and global warming, Captain Planet made us all aware of how badly we were treating the planet and he made us all want to be better people and do our bit to save the world. Complete with a six pack and a green mullet, Captain Planet was the environmentally-friendly hero of the 90s.
How different it would have been if Captain Planet flew in to save the day looking like this! Exchanging his six pack for a keg, this Captain Planet comes complete with sweat stains and face paint that Papa Smurf would be embarrassed about. This one definitely goes down as a fail; especially when you see what Captain Planet should look like…
14. Mega Man
The world of videogames is where our next entry comes from as the robot hero Mega Man is imitated and then quickly looks away in shame. Being a futuristic robot that has to stop some seriously evil supervillains can be difficult when all you have to fight them is some water bottles strapped to your feet! The fluffy cushions on the hands might come in handy if you need to take a quick nap, but not for fighting the mad scientist Dr. Wily.
He may not win any prizes for the best costume, but we do have to give this guy points for ingenuity as he clearly looked around his apartment and just grabbed anything he could find to make his costume. That’s some recycling skills that would make Captain Planet so proud! But for the sake of cosplay, more time and money is always the best way to go as you’ll see from what Mega Man should look like…
Oh dear! If bad cosplay itself isn’t enough to make us cringe or look away in horror, then the new trend of cosplay cross-dressing surely will. We can understand the need to do something different in order to make yourself stand out from the crowd, but this is a big swing and a miss!
There maybe nothing bigger than Pokémon at the moment, especially with the huge success of Pokémon Go; which has gotten more adults involved in the hunt for Pokémon than children. But with such a vast array of Pokémon and Pokémon characters to choose from, this guy would have been a lot better off picking Ash or Brock rather than opting for the tank top and tight shorts.
To get that image from your mind, here’s how a cosplay should look when it’s done properly…
Next we come to the face of the MCU and the poster boy for The Avengers, Ironman. Tony Stark’s genius invention is at the very cutting edge of technology and pushes the boundaries of the very physics that govern our world. With the use of super strong metals and enough firepower to take down an army, Ironman is a powerful hero and rightful leader of The Avengers.
We’re not sure how the Marvel universe would have panned out if this guy had rocked up to lead The Avengers. Covered from head to toe in red paper and tape, he looks less like Ironman and more like the christmas present Santa left at the bottom of his sleigh and forgot about for years. Even the face on the cardboard cut out doesn’t look happy with this creation!
Time now to see an Ironman that really lives up to the name…
11. The Joker
Next we turn to the menace that has been terrorizing the streets of Gotham City for years. The Joker has become synonymous with being the face of everything that is crazy and chaotic. Everything about The Joker screams maniac; whether that’s his crazy attitude or the clothes and makeup that make him appear as an insane clown. The Joker just screams destruction and chaos.
So with that and the popularity that The Joker has had in the movies in mind, we can understand that Mr. J is a very popular subject for cosplay. But with such an iconic character, The Joker can not be taken lightly with such a haphazard approach. This guy should take note and next time maybe go for something a little more safe. Maybe Ronald McDonald is more up his alley!
For a truly great Joker cosplay, we turn to a classic portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime….
We’ve already had The Joker on our list, so for our next entry it only seems fitting to have the Dark Knight himself; Batman. Along with The Joker, Gotham’s crime fighting hero is also a very popular character for cosplay. Given the fact that Batman has been a popular hero for generations, as well as the countless reboots and reinventions of the character, Batman is a great source of inspiration for cosplay.
Or at least he should be! Someone should have told this guy exactly what it means to be Batman. We must give him points for the cape and the mask, a nicely constructed piece. But the rest is a big no! It’s hard to picture this Batman striking fear into the hearts of Gotham’s scariest criminals.
This is more like it….
9. Wonder Woman
Having made her debut on the big screen in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, as well as having her own movie coming out next year, Wonder Woman is the female hero of the moment. The Amazon princess has been a feminine icon for generations. With strength, skill and intelligence to match the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman stands for everything that women around the world hope to be.
So when it comes to dressing up and being an icon for a day, who better to choose than Wonder Woman? But the cosplay fail of this costume is so bad that it almost destroys all that Wonder Woman stands for. We’re not sure if it’s just us, but we don’t remember Wonder Woman’s underwear poking out of her costume. And the less said about that beehive the better!
Now for the modern Wonder Woman and an icon restored…
8. Captain America
Speaking of icons, there aren’t many superheroes in the comic book world that truly symbolize all that is good and right in the world. Captain America is a constant symbol of hope and freedom, and time and again he shows us what it is to be a true hero. With his stars and stripes outfit and shield to match, Captain America is the ultimate hero and patriot.
We’re not sure if that would be the case if Captain America showed up to save the day in this outfit. The colors are there, the stars and stripes are there, but what is the fluffy material all about? Is this his costume or has this guy turned up in his Captain America pyjamas? We’re not sure which, but all we do know is that we need to keep this guy away from any nearby hair dryers; unless he wants to be puffed up like a furball that is!
A more modern version of Captain America here but it’s still one of the best we’ve seen…
It’s so very difficult to take this one seriously. We have to wonder what exactly was going through this guy’s mind when he first decided on his Mystique costume. But every time we try, we just look at the picture and then fall about laughing! We understand that some people like to make their cosplay outfits themselves rather than just buy a costume, whether it’s because of money or because the people involved want to show their love and appreciation for the character by painstakingly crafting an outfit. We’re not sure which category this guy falls into.
The powerful mutant Mystique maybe able to change her body to appear as anyone else, however even with her great power we think this version of herself is beyond even her abilities. This guy does get points for bringing us joy and for having the guts to go through with his crazy cosplay idea. But for execution this is a cosplay fail and best left to those who know how to do it. Like this one, a perfect Mystique…
There are some people that go all out for their cosplay creations. They spend all their time perfecting the perfect vision of their characters, and truly embrace the act of cosplay. Then there are some that really don’t put in the effort. This guy is part of the latter. With minimal effort and creative inspiration, this version of the famous web slinger isn’t just an epic fail, it’s also disappointing. Although we think the drawn on six pack is a nice and comical touch!
With a character that is as popular as Spider-Man is, if you choose to make him the subject of your costume then you should honour him by doing it right. For a cosplay win we’ve found a Spider-Man that does just that. Is our Spidey sense tingling or is this actually Spider-Man? It really could be…
As with some other entries on our list, there are many superhero icons that are very popular among the cosplay crowd. Batman and The Joker are among the favorites but another popular one is the Man of Steel himself. Standing for truth and justice and fighting for the little guy, Superman has been the poster boy of what a superhero should be since the 1930s. On the surface a Superman costume should be very simple. After all, he doesn’t wear a mask and doesn’t require any makeup or an extensive paint job. All you need is a good suit and the right posture to make a Superman costume look good.
At least that’s the theory, but as you can see from this entry, not everyone can pull off a great Superman. We’re not sure if it’s the hair or the fact that the costume doesn’t seem to fit properly or the fact that Superman is suddenly wearing a giant dipper! All we do know is that this Superman belongs firmly in the cosplay fails pile.
Now for a classic and simple Superman that does the job perfectly…
For pure ingenuity and just comic brilliance, these guys should be on top. However, as this is cosplay (and not just any old cosplay but Comic Con cosplay, which some people take very seriously, if not a little too seriously), these guys have to go in the epic fail pile.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have been keeping the streets crime free for decades. Living in the sewers, the TMNT use a form of ninjitsu to fight the bad guys. The turtle may well be a strange choice for a hero and maybe even a stranger choice for cosplay. But the renaissance heroes have the attitude and fighting skills that make them as cool as any other heroes out there. So what better subject for an awesome cosplay costume? Unfortunately for these guys they just missed the mark.
This guy however has it spot on. and yes, this is a person and not an actual Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle…
Since his recent solo movie, the character of Deadpool is having a big boom in popularity. The x-rated, foul mouthed anti-hero is fast becoming one of the most popular and common cosplay costumes. Because of this, it’s difficult to truly stamp your own individual mark on the costume and stand out from the thousands of other Deadpools that there are. Even so, to be a truly great or even good cosplay character, it’s sometimes better to play it safe and just buy a costume. Something that this guy didn’t think of.
There is more to the Merc with a Mouth’s costume than just some red pyjamas and a gun. The costume needs to show attitude, power and the ability to be ready for anything at any time. This guy just got out of bed, picked up a gun and put some woman’s red tights over his head. Even the eyes on the tights are desperately trying to leave this costume. Points for effort but this is a big cosplay fail.
Now for a real Deadpool…
2. Harley Quinn
As with the previous entry, Deadpool, Harley Quinn is also seeing a huge rise in popularity. Since her inclusion in the recent Suicide Squad movie, Harley Quinn has been this year’s hottest and most popular cosplay character. The Joker’s insane girlfriend is a welcome sight to many fans at Comic Con as well as other conventions.
However, getting Harley Quinn just right can be a difficult task. On a similar line to The Joker, Harley Quinn needs to be dangerous and crazy and with a hint of sexiness on top. Not to mention matching her color scheme, clothes and makeup. As you can see from this woman, just putting on a red and black top with a bobble hat doesn’t cut it. And we’d rather see the mallet than a ‘bang’ gun.
The Harley Quinn cosplay shouldn’t be taken on by just anyone. It needs attention and care to be a truly great costume. Just like this one…
We all remember that famous comic book storyline in which Wolverine was experimented on and his genes were crossed with a banana, right? No. We must have imagined that one then. The number one entry on our list of epic cosplay fails has to go to this gem.
Apart from maybe Batman, Wolverine has to be one of the most popular and famous comic book heroes around. Because of that, he is the subject of many people’s cosplay outfits. If you ever decide to Google it you will find many people as Wolverine and many many epic fails. Out of all the ones we can find, we thought this one was the worst. Or at least the funniest. We do wonder what this guy was thinking as his Wolverine costume slowly started to turn banana shaped!
With so many people dressing as Wolverine, it’s difficult to pick a winner. Especially as Wolverine’s costume is hard to get spot on. After all, he does have claws that come out of his hands. But we thought this was a good cosplay win. Probably because he could be Hugh Jackman’s twin…
