Whenever there is an award show on TV many of us love to watch the red carpet to see our favorite Hollywood celebrities strut their stuff. However, we often forget this is not their first rodeo. We also forget how entertaining it can be to look at their first red carpet moments. So, we decided to take a blast from the past and check out some of our most beloved actresses’ first red carpet looks. Going all the way back to the 80s and 90s, where the style was quite different from what we are used to seeing today, you will definitely be surprised as to how far they have come. No one can get it right the first time, but many of these celebs still looked just as stunning even a decade ago. From Blake Lively to Emma Watson and Jennifer Aniston to Kendall Jenner, check out these celebrities’ shocking transformations.
After doing some thorough digging throughout the world wide web we discovered 15 Hollywood A-listers’ first time red carpet looks and compared them to the most recent. Check it out and get ready to be pleasantly surprised as well as stunned. We know we were.
15. Blake Lively
Then: The Kid’s Choice Awards in 2005 – A young Blake Lively appeared at one of her first award events ever. Here, we see Blake before her plastic surgery and nose job. Another thing that has drastically changed is her style. We see her rocking a pair of ripped jeans, a cut off blue tee, a hot pink belt and finishing it off with a pair of pink heels. One thing that has not changed throughout the years though is Lively’s incredible physique. Even from the beginning, the girl had a killer body.
Now: At the 2016 Michael Kors fashion show in New York City – As we jump forward in time to the present, we can see how different Blake Lively’s first red carpet look has changed from the most recent. At the Michael Kors fashion show, we see a stunning Blake looking lovely in lace. Her nude dress is perfectly elegant. From 2005 to 2016 she has changed her appearance, her features and even her love life. Lively is now married to the always handsome and smoldering Ryan Reynolds. We have to say you are one lucky girl, Blake. Time has been good to you.
14. Emma Watson
Then: At the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premiere in 2001 – Can you believe it has been over a decade since this photo was taken of Emma Watson when she was the innocent face of our favorite muggle and spell caster, Hermione Granger, in the Harry Potter franchise? Only 11 years old at the time, we see a young Emma wearing a grey short sleeve dress with a fur scarf.
Now: At the Time 100 Gala – Now in 2016, more than 15 years later, Emma Watson is pulling off the red carpet better than ever. It seems she really has put a spell on us all. Her looks are magical, wearing a sleek black shirt with grey slacks and bright bold lipstick. It seems Watson knows the spell of beauty and we would sure like to know what it is. Looks are not the only thing that has changed for Emma. She has also recently launched a campaign called HeForShe which promotes gender equality, and will be the face of Belle in the Beauty and the Beast live-adaptation film. From wizards to beasts, Emma Watson is still enchanting after all this time.
13. Gwyneth Paltrow
Then: At the Flesh & Bone premiere in 1993 – Attending the premiere of one of her first films ever, Gwyneth Paltrow steps out for one of her first red carpet event. A smiling and innocent Gwyneth wears all black and mostly all leather. A leather jacket with black tights and black army boots to complete her look. Wearing hardly any makeup besides some red lipstick, Paltrow shows off a short bob and a different look than we are used to seeing nowadays.
Now: At David and Victoria Beckham Collection dinner – Here she can be seen once again wearing black but trading in the leather for a smoldering black cocktail dress. Once a young and fresh faced girl we now see a beautiful and bold woman.
12. Jennifer Aniston
Then: At the NBC stars party in 1990 – Before her critically acclaimed show Friends, here we see a young Jennifer Aniston in the era when high rise jeans were a thing and Jennifer is wearing them with a black belt and a silky grey shirt. Another thing extremely different, her hair. Normally we see Aniston as a blonde but here she has dark brown locks with simple makeup and a little red lipstick. Little did she know what fame had in store for her.
Now: At the 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards – Jumping more than 15 years later we find a much older and elegant Jennifer. Wearing grey once again but this time in a flowing gown. No more brunette hair, instead she has traded it in for her signature blonde look. Age has done wonders for this actress as she just keeps getting better and better looking through the years.
11. Emma Stone
Then: At the L.A. Replay store opening and Brandon Davis’ Replay Jean Launch Party in 2006 – We see an adorable Emma Stone with bangs, a simple white tee and a pair of dark faded jeans. This was before her rise to fame with movies such as Easy A, Crazy Stupid Love and The Help. Even at a young age, Emma Stone has always been cute and quirky no matter what outfit she decides to wear.
Now: At the 87th Academy Awards in L.A. – Now all grown up we see a radiating Emma Stone wearing a sleek gold dress. Her auburn hair is pulled up with some slight bangs hanging loose and red lipstick which goes great with her look and helps pop those stunning emerald eyes. She looks dazzling and sophisticated but her quirkiness still shines through. A little girl who once presented a PowerPoint to her parents to convince them to let her go to Hollywood is now one of the most adored and beloved A-list stars.
10. Kendall Jenner
Then: At the world premiere of Mulan at the Hollywood Bowl in L.A. in 1998 – Being a Kardashian means you are used to the flashing cameras. Kendall Jenner knows this better than anyone, being in the limelight from such a young age. Here we see baby Kendall Jenner with her mom and dad. Even then she was the center of attention and probably has one of the biggest red carpet transformations.
Now: At the Estée Lauder Modern Muse Le Rouge event in New York City – Now an adult, Kendall has grown into a stunning woman and model. She is seen wearing a red jacket dress and black high heels. If the Kardashian’s know how to get one thing right it is owning a red carpet.
9. Kristen Stewart
Then: At the Panic Room premiere in California in 2002 – Before her Twilight days that leapt Kristen Stewart to stardom, she was acting from a young age. We can see her here at the premiere of one of her first movies, Panic Room, which she worked on with actor and director Jodie Foster. Kristen was only 12 years old at the time and wore a long black coat dress with buttons, black tights and a pair of black tennis shoes to finish it off. What an accomplishment to have been able to create an intense and powerful film and attend a red carpet premiere event all the while not even being a teenager yet.
Now: At the 2016 MET Gala – Today Kristen Stewart has become an icon and is the face of Bella Swan in the Twilight Saga movies. She was known for dating Robert Pattison, her co-star and lover in the films, but is now reportedly dating Cara Delevigne’s ex-girlfriend, St Vincent. Kristen is shown here wearing black once again in a long sleeve shiny dress with a slit through the middle. We also see her wearing drastic dark and blue makeup with her hair half up. Kristen Stewart’s looks may have changed but her acting career is still going strong.
8. Angelina Jolie
Then: At the 58th Annual Academy Awards in L.A. in 1986. This was Angelina Jolie‘s first ever Oscar red carpet appearance. She is seen as only a young teenage girl with her father and well known actor Jon Voight. Angelina is wearing a long white dress with puffy sleeves and gorgeous pearl necklace. Little did she know what fame awaited her just some years later.
Now: At the 2016 Kung Fu Panda 3 Premiere – Angelina Jolie nowadays has been the talk of the town, the person on everyone’s mind with her recent split from actor Brad Pitt. The two were seen as the “it” couple that would never fault. It seems fairytales do not always have their happy endings, especially in Hollywood. Angelina though is still as gorgeous as ever. Here we see her 30 years later wearing a simple, sleek and short black dress with a pair of black pumps. Her hair is worn down, simple yet stunning.
7. Lindsay Lohan
Then: At The Parent Trap premiere in L.A. in 1998 – Lindsay Lohan made her movie debut with the sensational hit, The Parent Trap. Only 12 years old at the time, sweet and innocent Lindsay is seen at her first red carpet event for The Parent Trap premiere wearing a simple blue and white dress with a gold necklace and golden bracelets. The film would launch Lohan into stardom as she starred in many other successful movies after that such as Freaky Friday and Mean Girls.
Now: At the 2016 Butterfly Ball in England – Almost two decades later we see a lot has changed for Lindsay besides just her looks. The past five years have been a constant struggle for Lindsay dealing with drug, sex and alcohol problems and addictions. It has been recently rumored that she has had plastic surgery done as well. Whether Lindsay Lohan is on the path of recovery is still unsure but one thing that is true is the 30-year-old looked radiant at the Butterfly Ball. Lohan is seen all grown up and wearing a sparkling pink dress.
6. Kate Winslet
Then: At the Golden Globes in California – In 1998 Kate Winslet chose a fitted lacy gown to attend the Golden Globes with her longtime friend Leonardo DiCaprio. The two will always be remembered as our favorite couple, Jack and Rose in the box office hit Titanic. Here she is seen holding strong to her vintage Titanic look in a long black fitted dress with bright red lipstick and her hair pulled up high.
Now: At the 2016 Oscars – Now with many critically acclaimed films under her belt, we see Kate almost 20 years later at the 2016 Oscars. Black is her go-to choice as we can see her wearing a fitted leathery long black dress with smoky eyeshadow and her hair worn down. Kate’s looks have definitely changed from the Golden Globes in 1998 to her Oscar appearance in 2016. At 41 years of age she looks as beautiful as ever. We will never let go of how much we love your red carpet looks Kate, never.
5. Shailene Woodley
Then: At the American Girl store opening in 2006 – Actress Shailene Woodley arrives and attends the grand opening of the American Girl store in Los Angeles. She would go on to play the character Felicity Merriman in the TV family movie Felicity: An American Girl Adventure. Only just a teen we see Shailene wearing a white and green flowered shirt with a white cardigan, brown shorts and flats.
Now: At the 2016 Global Green 20th Anniversary Awards – Ten years later we see that her style has completely changed. Woodley looks absolutely stunning wearing a low cut black and gold skin tight dress. Shailene is an actress and now activist and was recently in the public’s eye for protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline and getting arrested. She recently pleaded not guilty to all charges and many argued it was a peaceful protest. Shailene is most known for starring as Beatrice Prior in the Divergent series.
4. Taylor Swift
Then: At the 2006 CMT Music Awards – Taylor Swift used to be known as a country singer. In 2005 she signed a record deal with Big Machine Records and released her eponymous debut album titled Taylor Swift in 2006 which was nominated for an Academy of Country Music Award. The album had many radio hits such as Our Song, Tim McGraw, and Teardrops on my Guitar. Here she is seen looking ravishing in a spaghetti strapped white dress with black detailing across the middle and white and black heels.
Now: At the 2016 MET Gala – Now considered a pop singer, Taylor Swift has changed more than her music genre. She is now an international sensation and was named the highest-earning female musician of 2016, earning $170 million. Since 2006 her stardom has grown immensely and her looks have changed as well. She is seen wearing a short metallic dress and knee-high wrap heels continuing her edgy pop-punk look. She is also seen with a short platinum blonde bob and deep dark purple lipstick.
3. Zoe Saldana
Then: At the Center Stage premiere in 2000 – We have to say Zoe Saldana looks extremely different in 2000. The actress is almost unrecognizable. She is seen wearing a maroon sparkly shirt fitted with a maroon skirt and heels. Center Stage was her first feature film which launched her acting career. Today she is known for her roles in films such as Avatar, Star Trek, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Now: Zoe Saldana attends Manus x Machina Fashion In An Age Of Technology Costume Institute Gala at Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2016 in New York City – She sported a peacock like dress creation that absolutely demanded attention. The actress looks as gorgeous as ever and definitely gets our vote for most dramatic dress as well as most dramatic change in looks. You are like a fine wine, Zoe. You just get better with age.
2. Jennifer Lopez
Then: At the red carpet event in the 1996 – J. Lo attends one of her first ever red carpets in 1996 wearing a cut off white tank with a long white skirt. Her hair is natural, worn down and wavy. Jenny From the Block has come a long way in her career. She is still a well-known singer but also a very popular actress starring in hit films such as Out of Sight, Enough, and Maid in Manhattan.
Now: At the 2016 Golden Globes – Jennifer Lopez is seen here glowing in a long, yellow dress and wearing 200 carats of diamonds. It doesn’t matter how old she gets, J. Lo will always be one sexy mamacita. She currently stars in the critically acclaimed TV show Shades of Blue which you can catch on NBC.
1. Kerry Washington
Then: At the 2001 Teen Choice Awards – Kerry Washington won an award for the breakout movie Save The Last Dance. Washington is wearing a sleeveless short black dress and rocking her natural curls. The film became a sort of breakout role for Kerry and helped her career soar. She later went on to star in the movies Ray, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Django Unchained.
Now: At the 2016 Emmy’s – Here we can see a prepossessing and very pregnant Kerry Washington. She is wearing once again a sleeveless black dress and wearing her hair natural and curly but this time we see it is much longer. More beautiful and successful than ever, Kerry stars on the hit TV show Scandal where she plays the character Olivia Pope, a former White House Communications Director who starts her own crisis management firm.
