Sometimes, Hollywood can be more entertaining than the film and television it produces, due to the celebrities that take part in such extracurricular activities as starting feuds. During these times, it’s not about the vocal or the acting abilities of the A-listers, it’s solely focused on their talent to throw some serious shade against one another.
It’s no secret that many members of the entertainment world fail to get along. With multiple personalities and demeanors blended together in a cut-throat industry, drama becomes an inevitable outcome. From tweets to award acceptance speeches, celebrities have no hesitations calling out one another for petty behavior. One thing you can be sure of is that when shade is thrown, the media is right alongside it, capturing every update and detail as the fight plays out. Whether the drama lasts a day or years, we as an audience, can’t deny that we sit on the edge of our seats watching it all unfold.
While a majority of the shade casted is highly intriguing, there are many incidents in which it becomes extremely pointless. But, seeing as it’s Hollywood and a new feud is started quicker than a Taylor Swift relationship, there is bound to be another quarrel begging to be the center of attention.
So if you’re a fan of petty celeb drama, grab some popcorn and check out the 15 times celebrities threw major shade at one another.
15. Naya Rivera vs. Big Sean
One fascinating aspect of Hollywood romances is that as soon as the relationship turns sour, true colors are revealed. Which appeared to be the case for Naya Rivera and Big Sean in 2014. After unfollowing her former fiancé on Twitter, before their split was publicly confirmed, Rivera tweeted in regards to allegations that Big Sean stole her Rolex watch from her residence, “@bigsean stealing rolexes from a lady’s house now. Maybe cuz I’m on Glee and making more or something. #trifling.” Ouch. However, the tweet only lasted online for a brief moment before the 27-year-old actress deleted her message. Her words and their break-up came as no surprise considering Big Sean was being accused of cheating on Rivera on multiple occasions. The actress later continued to spill the beans in her new book, Sorry Not Sorry, when she claimed that she caught her former fiancé with pop sensation Ariana Grande at his home while they were still in a relationship.
14. Iggy Azalea vs. Snoop Dog
The 2014, beef between Snoop Dog and Iggy Azalea was quite entertaining to say the least. It all began when Snoop Dog posted to his Instagram account a picture, that was clearly not Azalea, poking fun at the pap photo of the female rapper without makeup on. From there, a war began. Azalea responded with multiple tweets questioning the motive of his post when he has always been nice to her at shows. Apparently Snoop Dog didn’t appreciate her tweet and showed no signs of slowing down and continued to post to his social media page urging her to “cool out lil sis…”. The back and forth between the two rappers continued to play on. Azalea continued to call out Snoop Dog for acting one way to her face and then another on his Instagram account as he repeatedly posted memes throughout the feud. In a tweet before it was deleted by Azalea, she stated, “Glass Houses @snoopdogg I’m a b—tch because I called u out for being a secret fan? Grow up & god bless.” Seeing as Snoop Dog stopped posting pictures, he apparently got the memo.
13. Taylor Swift vs. Joe Jonas
It’s no secret that Taylor Swift is a professional when it comes to throwing shade at her ex-lovers. In fact, her relationships have made her millions of dollars, seeing as the blonde singer uses her dating life as her muse when penning her latest hits. The title of her songs, lyrics, and video innuendos are all clues that Swift is more than eager to call out an ex when they finally say goodbye. Which is why it came as no surprise when the country turned pop-star called out her ex-boyfriend, Joe Jonas, in several songs on her Fearless album. While many assumed it was Swift who got the last word, Jonas pulled a fast one when he laughed at her colorful dating past during a 2013 appearance on Joan Rivers’ E! Fashion Police show. When Rivers asked Jonas if he was the one to dump Swift, he replied, “I think it’s me and a few others, but yeah.” Want some ice for that burn?
12. Kelly Clarkson vs. Miley Cyrus
It’s no question that Miley Cyrus’ 2013 VMA performance was a train wreck to both watch and listen to. Which is a thought that, apparently, Kelly Clarkson strongly agrees with. Following the award show the next day, Clarkson tweeted, “Just saw a couple performances from the VMAs last night. 2 words… #pitchystrippers”. The jab was undeniably about Cyrus seeing as she donned a nude colored two-piece ensemble that showed more skin than audiences wanted to see. The American Idol winner may have told Andy Cohen this year on his show, Watch Happens Live, that she didn’t say Cyrus was the subject of her tweet, but it’s hard not to miss the correlation between the two. In fact, Clarkson failed to mention who in fact she was talking about, which leads us all still to conclude that Cyrus was the intended target of her words. Not to mention, the show’s other performances by Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, and Drake failed to identify as ‘pitchy strippers’, all foam fingers are still being pointed straight at Cyrus.
11. Pierre Edwards vs. Zayn Malik
Perrie Edwards and Zayn Malik appeared to be the perfect couple as both their X-Factor musical groups proceeded to take the world by storm. After meeting in 2011 on the reality competition show, the two singers got engaged two years later. Despite several cheating allegations on Malik’s end, the Little Mix performer continued to stand by her man. However, their engagement came to end in 2015 when the former One Direction star apparently phoned Edwards to call it quits. Shortly following their split, Malik released a new single to launch his solo career and began publicly dating model Gigi Hadid. Clearly not one to be messed with, Edwards took her troubles straight to the recording studio by writing her group’s new song, “Shout Out to My Ex”. The lyrics threw some serious shade Malik’s way, as Edwards sings on the track, “I hope she gettin’ better sex. Hope she ain’t fakin’ it like I did, babe…” The popstar additionally sang that she’d been wanting to call off their relationship throughout the four years they were together, but was now totally over him for good.
10. Selena Gomez vs. Justin Bieber
Believe it or not, there was a time when Justin Bieber was moderately well behaved before his current behavior of ranting to fans during a live concert. Back in his early days of stardom, Bieber began a relationship with former Disney starlit and singer, Selena Gomez. In February of 2011, the two lovebirds took their relationship public at the Vanity Fair Oscars party. However, their young love affair quickly became rocky and showed no signs of improvement throughout the years as they broke up constantly, only to get back together again. In the midst of their inconsistent relationship, Gomez sat down with David Letterman in a 2013 interview where the pair quickly realized they had something in common. After confirming she was single, Letterman proceeded to bring up her ex-boyfriend in conversation and admitted to making him cry. Without missing a beat, Gomez replied, “Well then, that makes two of us.” Her comment had both the audience and Letterman laughing as she unapologetically roasted her former flame.
9. Nicki Minaj vs. Iggy Azalea
Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea have both experienced their fair share of feuds with other celebrities in the industry, but in 2014, the two faced off against one another. While giving her acceptance speech after winning Best Female Hip-Hop artist at the BET Awards, Minaj appeared to call out Azalea. The female rapper stated, “What I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.” The statement alluded to the fact that Azalea relies on a ghostwriter for her raps. Furthering the shade being thrown, Minaj was seen dancing sarcastically while Azalea was performing her hit single “Fancy” at the show. Following the show and multiple media reports that Azalea and Minaj were fighting, the “Super Bass” singer took to Twitter to address the issues. She stated that she will always support women writing because she believes in the empowerment of women. Furthermore, she expressed to the public that she congratulated Azalea on her success with “Fancy”. So Iggy, what’s good?
8. Kanye West vs. Amber Rose
Before Kayne West married reality star, Kim Kardashian, he dated model Amber Rose from 2008 to 2010. However, when the pair decided to call it quits, it didn’t end well or amicably. In fact, Rose proceeded to call Kim, a home-wrecker. Those words came in response to West’s words in a past interview stating, “If Kim had dated me when I wanted, there would be no Amber Rose.” Adding more fuel to the fire, West joked that he had to take over 30 showers after he broke up with Rose. The model didn’t appreciate his words and fired back stating, “We were happy when we were together and now I’m getting sl*t-shamed because we’re not anymore…. and it’s unfair.” From there, the former couple continued an array of verbal attacks throughout the years. While things seem better between the former lovers, anything thing can change with these two hot-tempered individuals.
7. Mariah Carey vs. Jennifer Lopez
What do you get when the two biggest pop-divas on the face of the Earth don’t see eye-to-eye? Drama. You, get drama. Ever since the early 2000s, Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez have been no strangers to throwing shade at one another. It first began when a reporter asked Carey if she knew J.Lo and to which she replied with a simple, “I don’t know her.” From there, the rumors began swirling that the two singers, who run in the same circles, were in a feud. The topic was revisited this year when Lopez told Wendy Williams in March that Carey was apparently forgettable. The triple-threat stated, “We’ve met many times. I don’t know… I don’t know her that well.” Carey got wind of Lopez’s words and told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live that she wasn’t going to lie and pretend that just because they both live in and work in Hollywood that they are friends. When Cohen proceeded to ask if she thought J.Lo was cool, Mimi had no response. But that pretty much told us all that we needed to know.
6. Rob Kardashian vs. Kim Kardashian
For Rob Kardashian, it couldn’t have been easy to grow up with three sisters and a mom like Kris Jenner. Despite his rise to fame in the family’s infamous reality show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, it always seemed as if Rob was the kid that was being pushed to the side. For the past few years, the only brother of the clan, removed himself from the spotlight before returning to the small screen to film his own reality show with his baby mama, Blac Chyna. However, while he spent time hiding from the cameras, he had no problems using social media to vent out his frustrations. Which happened to mostly be about his own family. In 2015, Rob threw major shade at his sister, Kim Kardashian, on his is Instagram account. Giving his followers a front row view to the apparent feud, he posted a picture of Rosamund Pike’s sociopathic character from Gone Girl to his account with the caption, “This is my sister Kim, the b—ch from Gone Girl.” The post was allegedly a response to his family’s attempt to get him help with his weight and depression.
5. Amanda Bynes vs. Rihanna
From her arrests and mental breakdowns, the formerly wholesome actress, Amanda Bynes, has seen her fair share of media controversies over the past few years. During her meltdown that gained media attention for her uncharacteristic behavior, Bynes ranted in a series of tweets that was easily accessible to her followers. Her random tweets mainly focused on dissing several actors and musicians. Throughout the 2013 rants, Bynes took several shots at singer Rihanna. The actress tweeted, “No one wants to be your lover so you call everyone and their mother that… Chris Brown beat you because you’re not pretty enough.” In true Rihanna fashion of refusing to let her haters have the last word, the singer subtweeted her response, “Ya see what happens when they cancel Intervention?” Rihanna’s tweet alluded to Bynes’ alleged drug abuse and mental instability as reason for the actresses’ sad breakdown.
4. The Rock vs. The Cast Of Fast & Furious
While it has always appeared that the cast of the Fast & Furious franchise were as close as thieves, the Rock was quick to squash that notion. After wrapping on the set of Fast & Furious 8 late this summer, Dwayne Johnson posted on his official Instagram account a long rant that shaded actors that were giving him grief on set. The Rock stated in his comments that his female co-stars were amazing and how he enjoys working with them, but he then stated, “My male co-stars however are a different story… When you watch this movie next April and it seems like I’m not acting in some of scenes and my blood is legit boiling- you’re right.” After a rant like that, fans couldn’t help but question who exactly he was calling out. Two weeks following his post, the mystery was solved when he posted yet another picture. Johnson first thanked the director and studio for their hard work, before sending gratitude to his fellow co-stars. However, while he managed to thank the likes of Scott Eastwood, Tyrese Gibson, and Natalie Emmanuel, there was one notorious actor of the franchise that was missing; Vin Diesel. Which leads us to believe that Johnson and Diesel were having an extreme battle of creative differences while on set.
3. Katy Perry vs. Taylor Swift
Before all the drama between the two pop-stars began, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift had some serious mad love for one another. However, it didn’t last very long. In 2013, things took a turn for the worst when three back-up dancers, who had previously danced for Perry for several years, left in the middle of Swift’s Red album tour to dance for Perry’s world Prism tour. Swift regarded the situation the following year, when she revealed to Rolling Stone that ‘Bad Blood’ was about a conflict she had with another singer and how, “She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me.” Following the release of that interview, Perry had no hesitations when she tweeted out, “Watch out for Regina George in sheep’s clothing…” Yes, Taylor she is talking about you. But the shade didn’t end there. In 2015, Swift engaged in a series of tweets with Nicki Minaj, when she urged Minaj not to blame her fellow female artists when she failed to secure a nomination. Perry was not cool with Swift playing a feminist victim when she in fact wrote ‘Bad Blood’ about having a female enemy. Sure enough, Perry expressed those thoughts once again on Twitter. Apparently Band-Aids don’t fix bullet holes.
2. Joan Rivers vs. Rihanna
Joan Rivers was notoriously known for having no filter. No matter what it was that popped into her head, she always made sure to say it. While many appreciated that she spoke her mind, others were opposed to her unapologetic ways. One incident in which her words hit a sore spot, was in 2012 when Rivers chose to publicly speak out regarding the domestic abuse between singer Rihanna and her then boyfriend, Chris Brown. Rivers took to Twitter and said, “Rihanna confessed to Oprah Winfrey that she still loves Chris Brown. Idiot! Now it’s MY turn to slap her.” Woah, don’t hold back there, Rivers. A Twitter war between the two headstrong women ensued when Rihanna tweeted back to Rivers telling her to control her speech and to “slap on some diapers”. Of course, Rivers couldn’t hold back when she ended the feud with one last tweet with solid advice, “Honey, @Rihanna, everyone knows: If he hit you once, he’ll hit you again. Read the statistics. PS- Love to have you on Fashion Police!” In case you’re wondering, RiRi never accepted the invitation to appear on the show.
1. Taylor Swift vs. Kimye
Kim Kardashian West gave way to perhaps one of the most entertaining pop-culture events of 2016. While it seemed like Taylor Swift and Kanye West were able to move past their 2009 VMA fiasco, it was proved otherwise when Kanye released his new song “Famous”. In his new single, West sang the words, “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b—tch famous…” In response to his lyrics, Swift publicly stated that she didn’t appreciate West speaking about her with such foul language and for shading her on the fact that he is responsible for her fame. For a while the media seemed to be on Swift’s side, but that was until Kim K. released several videos on her Snapchat that showed evidence of Swift giving West permission to use those specific lyrics. Which in turn, prompted Swift to play the victim once again as she claimed Kimye was publicly denouncing her. However, this continues to be an ongoing battle as Kim refuses to let this go.
