Somewhere down the line, from the beginnings of cinema and entertainment to now, the words sartorial style and bohemian chic have come to define dresses that leave little to our imagination and are probably engineered to cause strategically-timed wardrobe mishaps – be it nip slips or crotch flashes. The hairy bare-chested musicians of the 70s (think Woodstock) has been replaced by the hairless bare chests of actresses and female singers alike – and since they got it, they ain’t afraid to flaunt it.
Frankly, the women are gorgeous – be it naturally or with a little help from their friendly neighborhood cosmetic surgeon. Their bodies are toned and well worth the expensive dresses they are poured into, the faces carry just the right hint of risqué expressions, and the body language is hot AF. These women are fearless when it comes to their wardrobe choices and are comfortable with their bodies to the extent of literally baring all to the public eye. So what if it’s nearly being naked? Their mantra is pretty simple: if you cannot take the heat, get off the red carpet!
The sheer dress is not new – in fact the celebs can thank the French women of the 18th century for this trend, for it was their fearlessly formidable fashion choices that made the sheer gown of today come into existence. The Incroyables (the men, “incredibles”) and their female counterparts, the Merveilleuses (aka the marvelous women) were members of the French aristocracy who survived the French Revolution – and to celebrate this, they embarked on a period of extraordinary and scandalous behaviors – be it via fashion, parties, or even decadent attire. It was then when light fabrics like muslin and silk became popular for gowns and the trend of sheer or translucent gowns was born.
Now of course, the best of the designers use the best of materials to create stunning ensembles that today’s divas carry off with, you guessed it, sartorial style. Sometimes the gowns are created with enough semblance of modesty with crystals or even embroidery covering the essentials. Some are created for pure shock value and these are the dresses the media and the public remember with great clarity. So here go 15 divas who love to be nearly naked on the red carpet. Mind you, the pictures are NSFW!
15. Nicki Minaj: The Voluptuous Goddess
This Trinidadian export is a bombshell indeed – be it her power-packed voice and performances, or her fashion choices that leave everyone gasping, some in shock, the others mostly in awe. Frankly, she seems like a female David Bowie, everything she does is OTT and is meant to be just that. From Harakuku wigs to the really strange shade of pink lipstick, Nicki Minaj is as much a fashion icon as she’s a diva and MTV as well as Rolling Stones have called her one of the most influential female rappers of all time.
With pin straight hair, cat eyes, and otherwise subdued makeup, Nicki pulls off the sheer gold gown by Labourjoisie with pearl accents and a built-in skin tone slip with a sassy elegance that few could match. The bodycon sheer dress is a Balmain design which Nicki paired with Alexander McQueen boots for an SNL appearance.
14. Bella Hadid: Part of the #FreeTheNipple Brigade
Bella Hadid is not just Gigi Hadid’s younger sister but a supermodel in her own right. She’s also become one of the A-listers of fashion that doesn’t follow the societal norms of nudity. She has been spotted in sheer so many times that it sort of became difficult for us to narrow it down to just two pictures. Being in showbiz, she’s of course comfortable with catwalk, couture, or editorial nudity that goes hand in hand with being a fashion model today. That said, she herself has a penchant for showing off her assets and frankly, who could blame her?
She wears a beautifully crafted Dolce & Gabbana black gown in the first picture which is more of peekaboo style. Elegant indeed! In the second picture, Bella supports the #FreeTheNipple movement by wearing a Dior dress that leaves nothing to the imagination. And by nothing, we mean nothing – this is one woman with no use for pasties!
13. Nicole Scherzinger: Pulls Off A Zinger Indeed
The black sheer dress you see on the right is one Nicole really “zinged” in recently, at a 2017 pre-Grammy party. The fishtail gown is by Michael Costello and Nicole decided to keep those assets breathing and free from the confines of a bra underneath the mesh. Her modesty was otherwise protected by a pair of black hotpants.
Once the lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls, Nicole’s solo singing career may not have gone great but she’s still a female music icon and a sex symbol like none other.
The sexy gown on the left was worn on the set of The X Factor and it showed her superb body off to perfection. The gold outlay hid her modesty though the gown itself seemed a bit gravity defying. The side-swept wavy locks and the bling in her ears only further added to the etherealness of this outfit.
12. Chrissy Teigen: Half Norwegian, Half Thai, And So Not Shy!
Chrissy Teigen is perhaps best known for her various Sports Illustrated covers, her husband, musician and singer John Legend, and of course, for wearing next to nothing on the red carpet, way more times than expected. She’s a model so obviously a hot bod goes with the territory but you need more than just a good body to rock a sheer dress, and that’s a badass attitude. Which she’s got cartloads of!
The black gown that seems to be lacking in the underwear department is by Marchesa and truly a breathtaking lacy affair that does not have any room for lingerie – though it has a high neck and a floor length skirt.
11. Kim Kardashian: What’s A Sheer Dress After A Sex Tape?
Yep, that just about sums it all. Since Kim K managed to strategically bare herself to the world via a sex tape, nude Instagram selfies, and of course, plenty of nude editorial shoots, a sheer dress is no big Jose for her. And frankly, the woman couldn’t give a hoot when it comes to her trollers and haters and clearly says that she is proud of her body and it empowers her. And with a doting husband like Kanye West, Kim K is free to wear and bare as she pleases.
The OTT white gown was a custom made Roberto Cavalli by Peter Dundas, and it did shake the Internet again, in true Kim K style. The LBD, or rather the sheer bodysuit, whatever you want to call it, certainly took the spotlight away from the dapperly dressed Kanye and put it where it belonged, on Kim, and there it stayed.
10. Rita Ora: A Dress Less Ordinary
She is certainly a star, with her powerhouse vocals and Billboard hits, but her fashion choices are as much in the public eye as is her singing. Her love for sheer and other equally sexy outfits has long made her a blogger’s dream – there is always something to write about her.
Sheer and black seem to go hand in hand as far as Rita Ora is concerned and this gown does not disappoint. Rita Ora in sheer black again, though in a flouncier style. The hair is straight and sweptback but left loose rather than in a bun, and the dress itself, though no less lacy, is a far cry from the near nakedness of the first one.
9. Diane Kruger: The Goddess of Sheer
Diane Kruger is red hot at the moment, and not just because of her movie roles. Her fashion forward choices on various red carpets have made her a paparazzi darling in the recent years and she seems eager to enter the world of dare and bare sheer. After her split with Joshua Jackson, Diane is single and ready to mingle in 2017.
At the Vanity Fair Oscar party, Diane chose to wear a Reem Acra embellished fringe gown that simply did not have any room for underwear under it. The crimson hued gown highlighted her complexion and made her look very, very sexy indeed.
At the premier of The Host, Diane wore a Thakoon frock that had lacy side panels running through the end, showing more than just a hint of side boob. With two-toned Jimmy Choos and sunburst diamond danglers, Diane was the picture of understated elegance.
8. JLo: Got It, Flaunt It & How
Jennifer Lopez has long been known more for her assets than anything else – though her songs and movies have gone down well with her fans. The thing with a sheer dress is that it basically ends up highlighting every bit of skin and so the wearer better be completely confident about her body before donning a spicy number like this. And JLo has the best body around, with washboard abs and a derrière most women would kill to have.
The LBD is a stunner and this what JLo wore to celebrate her 46th birthday. Frankly, the dress is really just bits of fabric sewn together with sheer lace paneling and cutouts just about everywhere. If anyone could have pulled this off, it had to be JLo.
Equally revealing and probably even hotter than the LBD is this embellished gown in white which uses patches of white cloth sewn under to protect the JLo’s bits but still shows off her enviable body to the very best of its ability.
7. Beyoncé: Twinning Now, In Sheer Before
So Beyoncé and Jay Z have just broke the Internet with their twinning news and the Internet is burning up, as are the trolls. That said, Beyoncé is clearly the queen of music, as she just proved with her gravity-defying chair stunt at the 2017 Grammys, her twinning bump notwithstanding.
At the 2015 Met Gala, Beyoncé rocked the red carpet in a crystal-studded Givenchy gown that sort of swept all the other “over-dressed” celebs under the red carpet, so to speak. The Queen was oh-so cool about being almost naked in front of so many people and since she was one of the last to arrive, she sure made a grand entrance.
Then there is this almost virginal white gown by Michael Costello that Beyoncé rocked at the 2014 Grammy Awards. Though frankly, while the dress looks sheer, there is no actual skin shown involved as there is a flesh-colored lining at play here.
6. Miley Cyrus: All Woman, No Girl
Once upon a time, there was this little girl who was known as Hannah Montana, the idol of one too many American mommas who all wanted their little girls to be just like her. That is, until she grew up and discovered that twerking was way more fun! Miley Cyrus is kooky enough to pull off just about any dress she wishes to wear and with an athletic body like hers, is easy to hide her delicates from prying eyes.
The strappy and sheer numbers looks more like Dom outfit than a real dress but Miley being Miley, wore this to the 2014 amFar LA Inspiration Gala. The essentials were hidden, and yet they were not in this bondage-inspired dress.
5. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley: The Hot Bod
This stunning model and actress is currently the flame of action star Jason Statham and expecting their first child. Modelling since the age of 15, she’s quite attuned to the demands of this industry and her body is hot enough to set fire to just about anything she wears.
Rosie stuns in a lingerie-inspired, barely there sheer black dress that let the world view her stunning body from just about anywhere and everywhere. The sheerness ensured Rosie wore it sans bra and while her modesty was covered with hotpants, the dress did little to hide her excellent measurements.
4. Irina Shayk: Ronaldo’s Loss, Bradley’s Gain
Russian by birth, Irina’s dark complexion often leads people to think that she’s a Brazilian beauty but since her father was a Tatar (one of the many Turkic Tribes living in Asia & Europe) her darker skin tone comes from her father’s side of the family. Because of her immense social media following, Models.com has ranked her number 8 in the world.
Irina was in a relationship with footballer Cristian Ronaldo for five years before they broke up and now this hottie is dating Bradley Cooper. At the same time when Rita Ora wore her daring black, almost-naked number, Irina Shayk also wore this black sheer jumpsuit dress that had the paparazzi begging for more.
3. Gigi Hadid: The Older Sister Leads The Way
And then there is Gigi Hadid who basically rocks just about anything she wears, or as this article focuses on, what she doesn’t wear. With her angelic looks and golden hair to match, Gigi pulls off what only a few others can and in complete ethereal style. Her looks are not the only reason why Zayn Malik is smitten. Apparently she can sing too and loves his cooking.
A sheer billowy dress worn over a strapless bodysuit by Yamina couture, coupled with wavy golden locks and coral brown lipstick made Gigi look like a fallen angel made for sin on this red carpet. The black gown is by Atelier Versace and seems to have more cutouts than the scrapbook of Princess Poppy in Trolls. And with the really high slit, coupled with the really low side cut out, it seems the entire dress is held together by just one stitch.
2. Lady Gaga: So In Love With Her Fans
So Lady Gaga aka Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta is no stranger to fame, pun intended. And her fans are no stranger to her outfits that have certainly made for colorful Internet chatter. Remember the meat dress? No? Good!
So to promote her latest album with Tony Bennett, Cheek to Cheek, Lady Gaga brought out her Cher-esque wig again (you know, the one with a headful of black curls) and a dress that was completely sheer – and stepped out of a Brussels club and then even signed autographs in this very costume! All she wore other than this barely there, wisp of a dress were nipple pasties and a gold thong.
Of course, while she was going to record the album, she wore this lacy, holey jumpsuit that left little to imagination, though it did have a 70s feel to it with bell sleeves and bottoms. The only “solid” thing in this outfit was the little white bow. And since she was travelling by private jet, Lady Gaga was kind enough to share these pics on Instagram, lest the world miss out on her bare-ly there fashion choices!
1. Rihanna: The Shocking Style Icon
At the 2011 Grammy’s, RiRi wore a sheer ruffle dress. The dress was a Jean Paul Gaultier design, however, it simply looked as if Rihanna had draped many strategically placed feather boas around her ravishing bod. And RiRi is not shy about nudity to begin with for she seems to be sheerly in love, if you know what we mean.
The 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards seemed to be the perfect moment for Rihanna to follow through with the #FreeTheNipple movement and this is what she did in a custom-made, crystal-studded Adam Selman dress. The idea was to shock, and when Rihanna dropped the boa she was holding around herself, shock she did. In naked, errrr, sartorial style.
